Not going to lie friends. This wasn’t an enjoyable read for me. The concept is interesting and would appeal to those who are fans of Tomb Raider and/or Indiana Jones; however, the main character was insufferable and I couldn’t root for him. I love a good villain but this just felt tired and overdone with a random game element thrown into the mix. I’m indecisive of whether I want to continue this series. It’s unfortunate because it’s the first title from Ize press that I didn’t really enjoy.
Oh I love this so much. Jooheon is the type of self-assured protagonist that I can’t help but root for, especially when he’s so hell bent on seeking revenge. Seeing his story progress will be a delightful treat.
This was fun. I'd say the only issue is that the print edition is a bit grainy. I've noticed that's sometimes an issue with comics that started online and then are later printed. The print quality is just not that great. I might just continue this digitally.
Meh. Ok, so this is Solo Leveling on a rewind event, with a less likable character. He isn't bad, but other than selfish greed and wanting revenge, there's nothing else to him. With Solo leveling, we see what drives him in the beginning, the need of money for his family. But Tomb Raider King is just him wanting all the relics cause he can. Cause he was late to the party. Not to save people, not to help anyone, purely for greed and revenge. I know he does save some people in a tomb, but they weren't in his way or a threat to steal the relic. He's also not evil or heartless, just selfish. And I say selfish cause he doesn't care if his roommates or friends are harmed from all the enemies he's making. The world around him feels empty, too. He is just steamrolling through cause he's done this once, and he doesn't care. The one thing I did like was the Korean to Japanese part, as it's was really the only funny part of the book.
I found this quite enjoyable but it was like reading Solo Leveling too much and I felt off. I hope the similarities don't become so much that they are clones of each other. For now, I will just give it 4 stars for the first volume because it was a good read.
Tomb Raider King is a modern day fantasy where mysterious tombs begin appearing across the world, each housing powerful supernatural relics once wielded by gods. Those who can partner with these relics gain extraordinary abilities, reshaping society into one ruled by organisations, wealth, and power. At the center of it all is Seo Joo-Heon, a tomb raider betrayed and discarded by those he trusted, only to be given a second chance armed with future knowledge and a thirst for revenge.
While the premise is entertaining, the book read a little too much like Solo Leveling for me to fully class it as its own story. The similarities were hard to ignore and ultimately took away from my enjoyment.
The parallels are very obvious:
Dungeons = Tombs
Pop-up, game-like mechanics to upgrade stats
A sudden supernatural invasion of the modern world
An overpowered MMC
Guilds = Organisations
To note: I’m aware that Solo Leveling doesn’t claim to be the originator of these tropes. However, when Tomb Raider King ticks so many of the same boxes, it raises the question: does this feel creative, or does it feel like capitalising on someone else’s success? For me, it leans a little too far into the latter, giving it a more money grabbing vibe.
At times, it felt less inspired by and more like a rebrand of an already familiar formula.
That said, there are some key differences: mainly in tone and characterisation. Where Sung Jin-Woo has a more tragic beginning and evolves into a solitary, almost mythic figure, Seo Joo-Heon is far more sarcastic, chaotic, and openly petty. He constantly takes the mickey out of situations and leans heavily into revenge, which gives the story a lighter, more comedic edge.
Personally, if you’re looking for something darker and more emotionally hard hitting, I’d recommend Solo Leveling. If you want something more light and fun, Tomb Raider King may be more your speed.
Unfortunately, the sheer level of similarity meant I couldn’t fully shake the feeling that I’d already read this story before, and that held it back for me.
That said, I’ll still be jumping into Volume 2 in the hope that it starts to shift away from its predecessor and paves its own path.
This would be a one-star review, but I mourn for an interesting premise so I added a star. I don't know anything about manhwa or even manga, so it's possible that I'm lacking important context, but here we go:
My partner and I listened to the first book in Clive Cussler's Fargo Adventures series last fall and one of the reviews I enjoyed the most from another GoodReads user said that there was absolutely no sense of peril for the main characters. Tomb Raider King is like this in the worst way. The story immediately employs a time travel device that lets the main character re-live an earlier part of his life, letting him go through with all his knowledge, skills, and experience. He even gets stat menus like he's living in a video game. Deus ex machina after deus ex machina ensue. He's on a huge power trip: getting his former boss arrested, beating his boss's lackeys to a pulp because he has all his fighting skills, outsmarting intelligence officers and soldiers working for the Big Bad, literally becoming a character of prophecy, choosing to literally DOMINATE the relics to do his will (for which he is rewarded with a magic healing pill to counter the effects of choosing the path of dominance over affinity). Of course the one moment he meets a woman she falls head over heels for him and he ties her up and humiliates her to prove his own superiority.
Also the story was very poorly told. The premise got more and more complicated as the story went on and it was all told through weirdly inserted text asides as exposition instead of actually shown. In a format defined by illustrations. What.

Another manhwa focused on science fiction elements that feel like video games (with leveling and challenges), so I want to make sure I'm branching out into other genres of manhwa.
Jooheon ends up 15 years into the past after the world has tried to figure out why these tombs and relics had been popping up in their area. People raided the tombs to harness their power. With Jooheon now in the past, he has an advantage that others don't because he's seen the future.
It's action-oriented with a science fiction feel with time travel, however, there's magic too. I don't know if I'll continue with the series, but it was another notch on my belt of reading some manhwa.
I always love stories that involve relics and artifacts, so this was definitely up my alley.
With that said, I think the beginning of this is more fitting of a show than a manga. I appreciate the very beginning, and I'm not against the time travel aspect. I just wish it was more of a montage so that we could get an overview of how he was able to get on his feet again. Then we can dive right into the adventure. Instead, it gave us every little detail of how he went from broke to well-funded. I don't have it in me to see how long it takes for the more interesting aspects to come back.
2.5 stars rounded up. This has most of the standard action/adventure elements that would make a great story for me (regressor MC, reverse isekai, diverse 'magic powers', dungeons, revenge etc.), but in the end, it didn't grab me- I think because the protagonist isn't likeable. He's just a bit of an asshole and so I wasn't invested in seeing him succeed. Ultimately, I gave up after about 30 episodes because there were no particular relationships to root for or watch develop, no major end goal or journey, and no great mystery/intrigue.
Another flat, lifeless male power fantasy. The appeal is ‘don’t you wish you could get back at everyone who did you wrong? Win at life because you already know everything.”
The main character, I legit cannot remember his name, is so boring. The world's done him wrong, but I don't care. I felt no connection toward him.
Every time the artwork draws me in, but the story kills any interest.
I'm not totally convinced by this. As other reviewers have said, this is very much like Solo Leveling, which isn't necessarily a bad thing if done right, and with the right differences. What's not completely selling me on this series is the main character. I'm not sure that I want to continue reading about him. I guess I can understand his motivation for doing what he's doing, so that might be why I'd continue reading.
This was so far, much more up my alley than I hoped it would be. Onto the next volume. This series might turn out to be one of the rare series I'll end up buying. This is/seem to be Indiana Jones, Tomb Raider, Uncharted all in one mixed with a leveling up concept, which was surprisingly fun to read about! And I like more morally grey characters like the MC seems to be so far.
Treasure hunting adventure hooligandry! These are fun (& in full color as a bonus) but got a bit rote for me after the first few volumes. It's going for a Solo Leveling vibe & falling a bit short, but I can absolutely see handing this to some Teen fans of Shonen looking for something a bit different!
A well-translated, fun and exciting comic that I can’t wait to continue. The art is excellent and action-packed. Jooheon is such an endearing asshole that is so good at what he does that it’s a delight to read about.
I can see why they hyped this as "For fans of Solo Leveling!" because it feels like a total copy of it. That said.. I enjoyed reading it. Probably because I like Solo Leveling so much. I'd read more, just to see where it goes from here.
3.5 rounded up This one has a great premise and a solid start, but the introduction of the world destroyer prophecy seemed quite out of place. Willing to give it a second book to see if it is worth pursuing.
