Jooheon is smart and resourceful, but the hunt for relics is ratcheting up. I can only imagine the chaos that’s going to happen as things start to get more and more intense.

This volume is packed with action and the expected tropes. The enemy list, skills, and mocking titles grow. The series continues to introduce intriguing ideas without fully exploring them. Radical government control, devastating illnesses that can wipe out a third of the population, and child exploitation for business profit are themes worthy of breathing time and that just isn’t given. Like most magical systems, there is a cost to using supernatural abilities in this world. Although variable based on power/class and the chosen control method, the relics’ anti-human stance tends to make these cost severe. And yet, our protagonist’s special buff negates this immediately and now seems to be working on those around him. Worse it forces a physical relationship time and time again between Jooheon and Irene in a gross ecchi way. So, what should create sacrifice and constraint is thrown away as inconsequential or humorous. This pattern repeats. You can’t use modern tech in tombs, except when you can. The tree of life is the most powerful medical tool except now it needs a companion relic. There are specific entrances, challenges, and rules… unless that is inconvenient to our story. Readers must give a certain dream logic to plot points and events. If you enjoy the unpredictable thrills and cheeky commentary, you’ll find it here. I wish Jooheon was more antihero and less villain but that’s a personal problem. (2.5 stars)

Summary: Jooheon is hired by Edward to retrieve a map relic but runs afoul of the other US team sent on the same mission. He foils the CIA, steals some more artifacts, and sends a forgery to Edward. As expected, General Kiera Clark demands compensation and he’s able to sabotage her collection. Meanwhile Irene Holton has been learning the basics of dominance and affinity to control the parasitic hand of Bankruptcy. They travel to Turkey to remove it but instead find its counter (Hand of Midas). Jooheon uses his restoration abilities to carve an escape route from Clark’s destructive powers, but they discover the Holton’s have an advanced case of relic disease and the controlling Pandora agency has formed three years earlier than the previous timeline.

I love the unpredictability of this series. Kept me on the edge of my seat.
