This was a sweet, quick read. Although slow to start, once the story started moving, I really enjoyed it. I have to say, I couldn't stand Melina at first and I just didn't understand why the adorable and endearing Joshua (who I loved from the beginning)would want anything to do with her. She had to grow on me as the book progressed and more of her story was revealed. I really liked how their relationship gradually developed (no insta love here)and how they both had to make the effort to make it work.

Book Description:

Can two people who are totally wrong for each other ever be right? She's a feisty, sly marketing exec intent on hiding her small-town roots. He’s a laid-back engineer with a shaggy mutt and a pushy ex. When Joshua asks Melina out, she asks what kind of car he drives. She’ll do drinks, not dinner. She’s always in control. But with Joshua’s easy confidence and sharp wit, Melina is soon breaking the dating rules she made for herself. Opposites attract—but friends think Melina and Joshua can’t possibly last. When crisis throws their world off its axis, Melina must confront her childhood family, the people she’s come to care about, and the destruction of her pristine image.

Story:

Josh is a nice, good-looking college student who has just broken up with his long-term high school girlfriend, Crystal. He’s looking for a new place to live; a place to call home. Josh’s father was in the military and his family moved around constantly when he was growing up, so “home” has a special connotation to him. He wants more than an apartment or a “pad”, a place to live. He’s looking to make a special living space for himself, one that he never had growing up. Of course, the first thing a boy needs to make this space special is a dog: a sweet mutt with no home – which is how Josh sees himself – that he names Aussie. All that’s missing is a girl … enter Melina.

Josh and Melina meet at a party, but things don’t take off right away. She’s not your everyday sweet, eager-to-please female lead, which makes her a little hard to warm up to. But like Josh, I found myself intrigued with her coolness, and wanted to get to know her a little better.

There is a lot of separate character development with Josh and Melina – they’re not thrown together on every page – which made it a more interesting read to me. That way, when they do come together, you’ve got a great idea of their individuality. They’re two very different people, but … it works!

The one thing they share in common is that they are both estranged from their families, and even though it is for completely different reasons, they manage to make up an eclectic family of their own as they grow together.

The banter between the two characters is also sweet to read and there are a few funny moments that made me giggle out loud. As for the steamy scenes, they are just hot enough, but nothing too explicit. I could have done with a little more sexy-times between the two of them, myself. But that didn’t seem to be the author’s focus of the relationship.

The only thing that disappointed was the abruptness of the ending. It was satisfying, yet it felt like it was thrown at the reader and wrapped up a little too quickly, and without enough explanation.

Ultimately, the strength and growth of Josh and Melina made this one of the better NA books that I’ve read in a while. Josh is delightful; the perfect boyfriend, and Melina keeps the readers on their toes, trying to refrain from eventually growing to like her.

Josh:

I loved that Josh was not your usual Adonis jock that beds every girl on campus. Josh is good-looking, but not drop-dead gorgeous with every female in the vicinity drooling over him. He’s confident, without the usual cockiness that goes with lead male character in many romance novels. Josh has a sweetness and a few significant traits that make him unique. He is an excellent cook, and intent on finding a long-term place to settle down and make his own. I’m happy to say neither of these traits make him seem the slightest bit feminine or sappy, which in the hands of some writers could easily have hampered his masculinity. Josh is a fun character to read, and not the usual run-of-the-mill caricature.

Melina:

Melina, Melina, Melina. Unfortunately, she is not as easily lovable as Josh. But she does get major props for not following the formulaic perfect, sassy female heroine who wins the boy in the end with her moralistic virtue and wide-eyed naiveté. Melina is a tough cookie who is easy to dislike. She’s aggressive, driven, rough around the edges, and will do whatever she thinks it will take to get ahead in her career … including sleeping with her married boss. I found myself wanting Josh to stay away from her – he could do better – but ultimately, once Melina’s demons are explained and her character grows throughout the book, they make a good match.

Supporting Cast:

Crystal is Josh’s high school girlfriend that he’s recently broken up with. With his parents and siblings living in other states, she has been the one constant in his life. I like that she is not painted as a terrible person that he replaces with Melina, but rather a nice girl that he has outgrown, and is trying to move on from.

Momo is Melina’s landlady. In exchange for some help with her gardening, and a couple of trips to the grocery store a week, Momo is willing to give Melina a break with her monthly rent. At first, Momo is an irritiation – especially when she prods into Melina’s family issues, but she quickly becomes a good friend and wise mentor to the lost Melina.

Won’t Last Long by Heidi Joy Tretheway is the story of differences. Melina and Joshua are almost complete opposites. Melina is goal oriented, controlling, and obsessed with perfection. Joshua is most comfortable in jeans and an old sweatshirt and is obsessed with nothing changing. Even Aussie, his dog, shows their differences. Melina wants a purebred dog if she has one and Joshua is perfectly happy with his mutt. The book is a delightful read.
Joshua has had all the change he really wants in his life. He is content with his work as an engineer working on pacemakers and enjoys spending his free time cooking and enjoying life with his friends. A basketball game followed by beer and talk with friends is perfect for him. Melina has worked very hard to get her promotion to senior account manager in her advertising firm. Since an ill-fated affair caused her to have to move to Seattle, she is determined to be perfect in everything. She goes nowhere without her makeup and hair and clothes being perfect and acceptable for the work area.
Joshua has just broken up with Crystal and is living on Mark and Stephanie’s couch trying to get his life back to some order. He has lost control and change bothers him tremendously. They drag him to a party where he meets Melina who has come to the party dressed to the nines in order to discuss an account with Eric. She and Joshua meet at Juan and Eric’s party. A few days later, Joshua moved into the apartment below Eric and Juan and fixes his house his own way. Now he is ready to move on. Juan suggests he give Melina a call and go out for the fun of it. Meanwhile, Melina has moved into a garage apartment behind Momo’s house. Part of the agreement is she works with Momo in her garden and takes her to the store. While this is not what she really wants to do, she does it and learns to love Momo and help her because she wants to. As Joshua is forced to change some things in his life and accept that change, Melina is forced to reevaluate her values and outlook on life. Can two so disparate characters be good for each other?
This book is a great read with a very different twist with Momo and her house. I encourage romantics to read this, keeping in mind that there are some graphic love scenes. It is easy to read and can be read in a couple of days.

“Now do you believe me? I’ll take you any way I can get you,” Joshua said, rubbing Melina’s hair and limbs to dry them. “You don’t have to be perfect for me. Just be you.”

I received a free copy courtesy of the author.

"... I guess what I’m trying to say is that dating you is good. It’s unpredictable and exciting and it makes me happy. You make me happy. And I’m wondering if you feel the same way, if you want to keep dating me. Just me. As my girlfriend.”

My Opinion
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.
Where do I start. I love love love it.

The story, the characters (even Aussie the dog), the writing... everything!!

Joshua is the sweetest book boyfriend ever and I actuallly really like Melina.

How do you explain someone like Joshua? He’s challenging. He’s confident but not cocky. He’s genuinely nice, and about as far as you can get from the stuffed-shirt bar guys. He doesn’t care what other people think of him.
“He’s authentic,” Melina said finally, settling on a word that made sense to her.

I just love everything about the book. It's quick and easy.

When they both finally admitted to their attraction, I thought that would be all. But the story went on and it wasn't in an annoying way. I don't want to put spoilers so I'll just say that it has a little more depth than the boy meets girl, they go out and they live happily ever after.

It's a great read.

Recommended: to YA, NA romance fans.

Won't Last Long Review (5 stars)

I was given this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is a fun story about the difference in love between not yet matured adults, and grown up real world adults. I enjoyed seeing that while the love two people have when young may be important, the older we get, the better we love...often a lot less selfishly.

The story is about 2 people who in no way have anything in common that end up dating and finding love. Their story is sweet and tells how wonderful it really is to find someone that accepts you for all your flaws and mistakes. Someone you can be real with and that relationship's are also supposed to be fun.

I loved this story! I thoroughly enjoyed the batter between Josh and Melina, there is something refreshing with reading a story about 2 people that stay completely who they are with the one the love. Not to say that Josh and Melina didn't have bumps along the road, but they did well to get through each one and came out with a lifetime relationship.

I also loved how they developed a new type of family along the way. I am very familiar with finding family outside the normal fashion. My best friends are the Aunt's and Uncle's to my kids, and I have many mom's that have taken me under their wings. I love that this story shows there is a completely different concept to the term "family".

Heidi did an amazing job on this story and I look forward to seeing what she comes up with next!

I usually prefer dense, heart-wrenching novels, but I enjoyed reading this book. It was laid back, light, and not too complicated -- a perfect summer read.

Though I initially had difficulties getting into the story and connecting with the characters, especially Melina, seeing how she and Joshua each developed and grew at their own pace was probably what I enjoyed most. I think Ms. Joy has a knack for realistic characterization of different kinds of people -- no one character was like another, but each seemed authentic and familiar. There's definitely a Momo in my life (my grammy), a chirpy friend like Holly, and we've all had our Richards, right? (No? Oops.)

I also enjoyed how descriptive the author was. I felt like I was watching a movie instead of reading words; from Melina's attire to the way Juan makes guacamole, I could so vividly imagine the setting, the characters, and their expressions.

If you're looking for a light and enjoyable read, this is it!

I received a copy of Won't Last Long in exchange for an honest review.

Joshua has had a life of moving around and all he wants is permanence, in both life and love. Melina has baggage of her own due to her family and all she wants is to project the appearance of success. Josh's and Melina's friends are surprised when they start dating because they are just so different then each other. Will their friends be right - that they won't last long or can they prove that opposites can come together?

The story was well written and flowed nicely from chapter to chapter but I just never felt a strong connection to either Joshua or Melina so I didn't enjoy the story as much as I could have. There were parts that I liked - I did like that each one did grow throughout the story and that they learned to accept the idiosyncrasies of each other and also that their friends finally got to the point of acceptance as well.

The book started off with some rough transitions between chapters that left me wanting details about the events at the end of the previous chapter or guessing at the time line. However, as the book progressed, it was much easier to follow and didn't continue to lack those details.

I enjoyed the story line because the emotions and problems felt real. You don't always know everything about the people you date or marry - I like that the characters worked through their problems and the peeling back of their histories and family baggage. It may not be a fairy tale, but the characters end up happy. Plus, there were a few moments when I actually laughed out loud, proving that the author's wit comes across as natural and, well, funny. And though the ending seemed a little abrupt, I didn't feel like I was left hanging.

Over all, it was an easy read that provided a few laughs during an otherwise boring day at home.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

Josh and Melina are as different as two people can be. Josh is a guy who likes to work on his car and recently adopted a big shaggy mutt. Melina is a high powered executive for whom image matters and her proudest possession is a Giustiniano handbag. Josh strongly dislikes change, Melina can't stand surprises. They met at a party and the attraction is immediate. They slowly begin building a relationship together, much to the surprise of their friends. When serious issues happen they realize what is important in life and determine what is important to fight for.

I really enjoyed how the story is told from both the perspective of Josh and Melina, it's a great touch to have the guy's perspective. I would recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys a great romance story. This contains a bit of everything, some heat, some drama and some laughter.

**ARC given by author in exchange for an honest review**

This story did start a little slow for me. Once the friendship/relationship between Melina and Joshua started the story was enjoyable. Melina and Joshua are complete opposites in life. He is a laid back , she is driven. When Joshua meets Melina at a party, some of his friends try to talk him out of asking her out because of their different personalities. Their dates start off simple and fun. Joshua helped Melina to be herself. The relationship was real with lots of problems either from family, friends, or their past. They work through it all and through all this you see why they grew into the adults they are.

This is a story of growth, love and family (real or not).

No matter our intentions, often we seek companionship with people completely opposite from ourselves. This is the first book I've read that dives into the nitty gritty of this situation--questioning if such a pairing will end up in smoke or if it's possible to learn from each other and grow. I loved it! It's a breezy novel anchored with strong characterization and a real purpose. Very much recommend the read.

I agree with past comments that the beginning is slow but personally enjoyed this aspect of author's style. The speed of the book brings the relationship between Melina and Joshua to life -- the semi-awkward slow first dates that quickly accelerate into a deep and sometimes difficult relationship. Add it to your read list!

Melina is a career-oriented businesswoman who is all about her image. Joshua is a down-to-earth, likeable guy. What could attract these two to each other?

This was actually a pretty simple story, but I liked it. I have to admit that I never did like Melina much, but I loved Joshua. Melina did grow as the story went on, though. I also really liked Melina's landlord, Momo. It was quick to read and enjoyable.

I enjoyed this book. Joshua is part sweetheart part jock. Enjoys his time with the guy, loves to cook and has a good heart. Melina is a go getter. With a rough history, she is determined to succeed and impress everyone within sight with her professional talent and expertise and her appearance. Clash. The story is believable and the twists and turns kept me turning pages. Gotta love wise Aussie and Momo.

I do love a story that allows me to play upon my personal experiences, that helps me delve into faraway memories, which in turn help me to connect with the characters and events I’m reading about. Won’t Last Long is just that story.

Melina and Joshua are pretty much opposites. She is a control freak, who likes to dictate how things will be whereas he is laid back, relaxed and happy to see how things go. Both have been hurt in different ways by past relationships. After a chance meeting at a friend’s party, and overcoming Melina’s “First Date Rules,” they embark upon a relationship together.

Their friends aren’t so confident in their compatibility, the majority of them thinking that it Won’t Last Long. When a near tragedy threatens all they have between them, Melina and Joshua are more certain than ever that they are meant to be together. With a lack of friends and family on their side, the road to happiness may not be an easy one and they soon discover who in their lives really cares for the couple and in turn who means most to them.

To quote Melina, Won’t Last Long is “authentic,” just as she describes Joshua. This is a open, honest story about the good, the bad, and the downright ugly sides to a relationship. It is a harsh reminder than one little mistake can bring with it life-changing consequences, that your family isn’t necessary made up of the people you grew up with and that you know your own mind better than anyone else.

Melina and Joshua are both great characters, and you’ll fall in love with them as much as they do each other. You can feel them growing throughout the story, as their relationship progresses and numerous obstacles look set to stand in their way. The almost obligatory not-so-nice exes are present but the stories of their past relationships are both interesting, along with the reintroduction of their ex partners into their current lives. Melina’s landlady was amongst my favourite characters, an old Lady who is both romantic and wise, who is sensible when it comes to giving relationship advice but also believes in a higher power.

When mixed with great dialogue, these characters come to life and Won’t Last Long could easily match any great love story you may see on the big screen. But this isn’t Hollywood, and there’s no guarantee that our leading duo will get the happy ending they long for.

My rating 5/5 – An honest love story which embraces how good times and bad times are both needed to appreciate not only what you have but what you stand to lose. Fantastic characters, dramatic events and great dialogue help to create a wonderful and realistic novel, which not only makes you feel but will also make you think. Highly recommended.

Opposites attract ... but will it last?

Melina is a career-oriented and driven marketing executive.

Josh is a laid-back down-to-earth engineer.

Melina and Josh meet at a party and there is an instant attraction. They start to date and slowly build a relationship much to the amazement of their friends, who don't think their relationship will last because they are complete opposites. Theirs is a love story about two very different people who realize what they have, and work together at making their relationship a permanent one.

In Won't Last Long, author Heidi Joy Tretheway weaves an enjoyable and realistic love story written in the third person narrative that alternates between the perspectives of Melina and Josh, who travel down love's path discovering, molding, and building a relationship that will last.

This is a slow building storyline, but like fine wine, it takes time to connect with the characters to appreciate the beauty behind their love story. I loved that the author had Melina and Josh take their time to slowly build their relationship, to me that was realistic, believable and easy to relate to. While theirs is a love story meant to last, they had their fair share of trials and tribulations and emotional baggage to overcome. I really enjoyed watching as they grew into a couple that defied the predictions of their friends and family.

It was fun to watch Josh and Melina's very different personalities mesh together, I really enjoyed their sassy banter. While they each stayed true to themselves, they also learned to accept each other's flaws and idiosyncrasies, and did not let it tear them apart. I think that the author did a nice job of mixing humor, drama and romance into the storyline, it was a lighthearted and easy read.

Won't Last Long is so much more than just your typical romance story. It is a realistic story about two people who embraces their relationship, and work together through its ups and downs to appreciate the love that they have built.

This is not a bad book, but I can only give it three stars. There are some great positive things I have to say about it:

The character development is excellent. Watching them grow and change was great.

The story itself is really wonderful. Josh and Melina have a lot of learning and maturing to do when it comes to relationships and life and they do it together. They fight, but they also learn from each argument and strive to do better. They truly love and respect each other, and despite all odds they work and are good for each other. The story is real and beautiful.

I recommend reading this book if you can get over the following hang-ups that caused me to have trouble getting through.

It starts VERY slow. I feel the first probably 6 chapters could have been condensed into a couple. Most of the info from them was boring and unnecessary. I understand why they are there, and it does help develop the characters, but it was drawn out too much. I rarely put down books unless I have to and even then I can't wait to get back to it. Until I got to chapter 7 I found myself putting the book down often because I wanted to. Once the pace picked up I enjoyed it a lot more, then even then there were quite a few parts I found unneeded and felt the need to skim past, but they were bearable.

Several times the author used a word or phrase (some common, some not as common, but easy to place, especially in context) and then went on to explain what the word meant. It drove me nuts! And it kind of felt like I was being talked down to as a reader.

And lastly, even though the story was great, and the characters were great, I didn't connect to them. I never really felt like I was in the story, which was sad, because I would have loved to be.

I tried so hard to love this book because I fully support this author and the people behind this book, but I just couldn't and I have to be honest in this assessment. But I liked it and will definitely read more from this author, she has a ton of potential!

I loved this book! I read quite a lot of chick lit, and can get sick of the oft repeated plot lines that make many of them very similar. Refreshingly, I found that “Won’t Last Long” stepped outside of the mould. Written from the perspectives of both the male and female main characters, the book did centre around their budding relationship and the baggage that they brought with them. However, the progression of their relationship was believable from the outset; there was no love-at-first-sight, or cliched one liners.

I found myself relating to the characters quite strongly; the idea of having an ‘ideal’ relationship in mind and trying to reconcile that with real life was one I’ve also struggled with, as well as the idea of maintaining a certain image for the sake of my career. So, personally, I could really empathise with the characters. That said, I suspect that many people would be able to identify with one character or another!

I did find that the second half of the book galloped along at a very rapid pace, compared to the first half, and some plot lines were wrapped up a little simply, but I didn’t especially mind, as I liked the ending! I thought it was a little strange that the ‘big secret’ that Melina was hiding didn’t create much drama, given the foreshadowing in the book, but overall that didn’t detract from the novel too much.

Always the benchmark of a good read, I read most of the book in one setting, because I was so intrigued by the plot. It had all the marks of great chick lit (romance, a DIY project, an adorable dog, and plenty of drama), without the same-old feeling. On the whole, I’d definitely recommend putting it on your summer ‘Must Read’ list!

Love and Family can be a funny thing as no matter what happens you can try and choose both but it doesn't always work out that way. Won't Last Long by Heidi Joy Tretheway introduces us to Josh and Melina. Josh has shifted around all his life and is the only one in his family actually making something out of himself, after breaking up with his longtime girlfriend Josh finally wants to be himself and create a life for himself. So he rents his own apartment and gets a dog and soon a girlfriend follows. Melina has never experienced true love and is on her way up in the world of advertising and comes from a family where whatever she does is never good enough. Melina has a list of rules when dating and has never broken them until now - when she meets Josh. The pair of them despite comments on both sides saying that they "won't last long" and family obstacles, the pair proves everyone wrong and eventually they get married. This was a sad part in the book as it showed that none of them really had anyone but themselves, however after their marriage - things start to go from little to rocky arguments and fast as lies are uncovered and tragedies strike and accidents occur. Is this pair doomed and their relationship built not too last or will Josh and Melina show everyone that no matter what others out there say , that their love is not jinxed and will last the distance. Readers , compared to other books in this type of genre, Won't Last Long is a long and lenghty read but it is worth it to keep persevering as I couldn't put it down even though at times the length was daunting and I wanted to.

Melina loves to have and be in control. She had a set of rules when dating, and she never, ever, ever breaks them – until Joshua comes along. And never in a million years would she realize that he was the only one who can break the ice that surrounds her. Her career in advertising is soaring, but it was never enough for her family.

Joshua, on the other hand, I love his character, he’s so cool! Nevertheless, after breaking up with his longtime pushy ex, he finally decided to be someone better. Then Melina comes along – he made her his mission. He wanted her to be his. With his great and cool personality, Melina is a lost cause.

It might have been a little long for my taste, but I enjoyed the story, it made my night – especially with the last chapters. I love the characters, and how they finally get the HEA to their love story. It was sweet, and you couldn’t help but fall in love. But it is not just romance – there are a lot of conflicts, past baggage, deceptions and not to mention, over-protective friends that will make you read, and read until you finally reach the final page.

I was a tad worried when I first started this story, because it started slow for me. I think one thing that was distracting me from the book was the overuse of the character’s name. For example, in one short paragraph Melina was used three times, and with that writing style it can make the book in a more of a telling mode than showing. I was relieved as the plot started to pick up the pace, and during the meat of the story I actually didn’t want to put it down. I didn’t love the second half, particularly the last few chapters, as much, because the characters were going on top speed and there was one section in particular that made me kind of scratch my head and wonder where in the world the story was taking us (when Richard re-enters briefly). So you can see my review is a touch all over the place, but for the most part I did like the book, because I enjoyed the characters and watching their love story play out. And I’m in love with the cover. There were aspects that I thought could have been tightened up, but if you enjoy sweet romantic stories, check this one out!

A fun and engaging read! I was thoroughly entertained by Joshua and Melina’s roller-coaster romance. The book has exciting twists and turns which keep you flipping the pages but retains the sweet sentimentalities of new romance. It is fun to see a couple as opposite as care-free Joshua and control-freak Melina navigate the tides of romance. The story is peppered with laugh-out-loud moments which, in juxtaposition to the minor tragedies, give it a nice balance. It’s obvious that Tretheway has a proclivity for dialogue, as the couples conversations were clever yet glib and rounded out the internal life of the characters. If you’re looking for a fun escape from the realities of daily life, this is a great read!

I really wasn't a huge fan. The timeline seemed really messed up in the beginning. The characters were such a mystery that I don't really know them at all. I understand why they might hate one another but I didn't understand why or how they fell in love. I felt like I was on the outside looking in and couldn't connect with either character. It was all very rushed with more detail in sideline happenings than in the love life of the characters. It was ok.
