Alastair John Campbell is a British journalist, author, strategist, broadcaster, and activist, who is known for his political roles during Tony Blair's leadership of the Labour Party. Campbell worked as Blair's spokesman and campaign director in opposition (1994–1997), then as Downing Street Press Secretary, and as the Prime Minister's Official Spokesperson (1997–2000). He then became Downing Street's director of communications and spokesman for the Labour Party (2000–2003).
Since his work for Blair, Campbell has continued to act as a freelance advisor to a number of governments and political parties, including Edi Rama, the Prime Minister of Albania. He was an adviser to the People's Vote campaign, campaigning for a public vote on the final Brexit deal. He is the editor-at-large of The New European and chief interviewer for GQ. He acts as a consultant strategist and as an ambassador for Time to Change and other mental health charities. Throughout his time in Downing Street, Campbell kept a diary which reportedly totalled some two million words. Selected extracts, titled The Blair Years, were published in 2007. He expressed an intention to publish the diaries in fuller form, which he did from 2010 to 2018. In 2019, Campbell was expelled from the Labour Party after voting for the Liberal Democrats in that month's European elections. In 2022, Campbell launched the podcast The Rest Is Politics with Rory Stewart, which has been the top politics podcast in the UK in the Apple rankings since its launch.
What a brilliant book. It's incredibly short but helps people understand politics. It would be perfect for children who are starting to ask questions about how governments work...but equally great for adults who want the basics.
I’m rating this on its accessibility for its intended audience of those under 16 (and probably younger) rather than a 48 year old man.
It’s highly accessible, to the point, well-referenced with pointers to flick forwards and backwards through the book where topics link, and despite Alastair’s historical left-wing views, it’s non-party biased and where Alastair gives his views, this is clearly marked in a kind of comic book comment. Alastair gets short interviews with politicians and contributors from the left and the right, and from men and women.
I bought this for my daughter at a point where she showed interest in politics and was in danger of being sucked in by sound bites such as “Make America Great Again” and the even more scary “Make Britain Great Again.” Now she is able to question the policies behind such statements and form her own views.
Should be accessible to all young people as it sets out what politics is about, and why we should care.
I'm going to be vulnerable for a moment & admit that I know next to 𝕟𝕠𝕥𝕙𝕚𝕟𝕘 about politics, so on the quest to become a better well rounded individual that's aware of the world around me, I thought I'd dip my toes into an accessible, young person aimed book about the topic.
This little book really did help me get my head around the basics such as terminology and what it all means. It didn't try to sway you to one side or another, rather than just give you very transparent facts to start you off on the policital lingo and practices for the UK, also touching and comparing places around the world for greater perspective.
I found this to be very rewarding for my knowledge. Its obviously aimed at children so does read very young but not necessarily patronising, however there is an emphasise on activities being school related, so that missed the boat with me. In saying that, it meant that the style was very accessible and user friendly all in all and I have certainly come away knowing more than I had going in.
Alastair Campbell Talks Politics is a compelling and timely read, especially pertinent as we approach the upcoming general election. Campbell, a seasoned political strategist and communicator, offers readers a comprehensive and accessible introduction to the world of politics.
One of the standout features of this book is its ability to distil complex political concepts into clear and digestible information. Campbell's engaging writing style makes it easy for readers, regardless of their prior knowledge, to grasp the intricacies of political processes, strategies, and key issues. He demystifies the often opaque world of politics, providing readers with the tools to understand and engage with the political landscape more effectively.
Campbell's insights are not only educational but also incredibly relevant in the current political climate. As we navigate the pre-election period, his analysis of political campaigns, media strategies, and voter behaviour offers valuable perspectives. His firsthand experiences and interviews add a layer of authenticity and depth to the narrative, making it not just informative but also highly engaging.
The book also excels in its balanced approach. Campbell doesn't shy away from critiquing his party or acknowledging the strengths of his opponents. This balanced viewpoint fosters an understanding of the political arena and encourages readers to think critically about the information presented.
In conclusion, Alastair Campbell Talks Politics is a must-read for anyone looking to deepen their understanding of politics, especially during this crucial pre-election period. Campbell's expertise, combined with his clear and engaging writing, makes this book an invaluable resource and perfect.
Loved it! A great guide specifically to UK politics but the idea of politics in general. I think what Alastair is doing by engaging and promoting youth curiosity is highly important and noble of him, someone who could easily spend their time relitigating the height of his career working for Tony Blair in the 90s, instead chooses to keep going, keep engaging, and bring up the next generations with him and what he’s learned.
Not sure I still qualify as 'young people' but found this really explanatory / revealing how little I really understood the basics. Alastair family voice from podcasts and his personality (and political opinions come through). Really clear explanations without being condescending, good historical references and fun facts. Well worth a listen.
An excellent book for children keen to understand more about politics - especially in the current situation. Full of clear explanations, interviews with current politicians and packed with questions and answers followed by mini quizzes. Perfect to inform our young, future voters.
I’m twice the age of the target audience and not British, but I thoroughly enjoyed this book nonetheless. It offers a clear and compelling explanation of why we should care about politics.
