Love the idea, the cultural exposure/learning, the illustration style, and the use of color!

My only critique is that for a counting book, some of the illustrations’ composition could have been better. For example, on the page about the shawls, you can’t very well see all of the shawls. An older kid or adult could see that there are five women in the picture and infer that they’re probably all wearing shawls, but you can’t really see all of the shawls, so it might be harder for a younger kid. On one page, it asks which person has black hair—but nearly all of the people pictured have dark hair, and the difference between black and dark brown on the page is very slight.

It’s a really cute book though! It would be interesting to see how my baby does with it when he’s older.

I received an ARC of this book for my honest opinion.

A pick for one of the best books of 2022 by Chicago Public Library, this book of Native American celebration is a must have for classrooms and home libraries. This little book does so much! Not only is it a glimpse into Native American cultural life, it teaches counting, colors, and asks questions throughout to engage even the bigger readers. There are even little references to Native Americans in US History with mentions of veterans and the diversity throughout. A simple and yet really wonderful book introducing Native American culture for any age.

Thank you to Charlesbridge for the eGalley to review!

The illustrations of this board book are GORGEOUS. Even better, you're instructed by the book to stare at them! Each illustration has a matching instruction page that consecutively counts upwards from one to ten and has the audience not just count things in the illustrations, but to locate specific colors in them. This makes it a great book to teach counting, colors, onomatopoeia, and Indigenous culture all at the same time! A wonderful addition to baby's education collection!

I think this could have been better not as a board book and not asking kids to point to colors.

The author did a great job telling the story of a Powwow, and with very authentic illustrations. Wonderful. But then it kept getting interrupted by the author asking us to point to the girl with black hair or to count the number of jingles, and things like that.

The colors did not always seem to match the description unfortunately, and sometimes the illustrations were so busy as to be unclear, but I really liked this concept!
