Two Sisters In Ireland

Rate this book
Leaving the men behind, Kenna and Nikki set out for a vacation and immediately take advantage of their freedom. While waiting for their flight to Ireland they meet, Aoife, an elderly Irish widow who is returning home to the joys and stresses of her tight-knit family. A lively chat ensues about holy wells and looking for their grandmother’s birthplace. Once in Ireland that conversation encourages the sisters to veer off the beaten paths where they find holy wells, encounter ghosts, and stumble upon fairy mounds. As one sister uses crystals to ward off potential danger, the other sister is skeptical. But not for long. As the story unfolds Aoife along with her family and friends change the direction and lives of the sisters. Kenna and Nikki go to places they would have never gone. They meet people they would have never met. They hear stories about Ireland and their heritage that they never knew. They sing and dance in pubs while enjoying pints with the locals. Unwinding from their hectic lives back home they face new challenges, igniting passions both spiritually and physically. Through rich descriptions of Ireland’s beautiful scenery and the stories told by its people, this tale brings readers on a colorful and engaging journey.

Two Sisters in Ireland is by Jeanne Selmer. It is a cute novel about two sisters who travel to Ireland.
Kenna decided to quit her job and go to Ireland. After getting over his surprise, her husband agreed with her. She decided her sister Nikki would go with her and they would try to find where their grandmother came from. Nikki, who was married to a doctor, agreed to go and two days later, the girls were off. While they waited for their plane to Ireland, they met Aoife, an elderly widow who was going home after visiting her daughter. They talked until Aoife’s plane was called and then she invited them to visit her when they got near her town of Clifden near Galway City. Since they intended to be in that area, they agreed to visit.
Without any problems, the two made it to Ireland and Kenna rented a car. The man at the desk upgraded them when he found out where they were going. He said the car they originally wanted might not make the terrain they might be on. Thus, the girls immediately encountered the friendliness of the Irish. They were to have many more such interactions. They set out with Kenna tentatively driving a stick shift and on the left-hand side of the road!
As the girls set out and find many of the holy wells as they make their way through the west side of Ireland from Shannon, the author gives us a fantastic tour of the area. She takes me back to the visit I had in Ireland and in this region. It comes alive again. She makes sure we learn what the Cliffs of Mohr are as well as the Burren. We get glimpses into the history and culture of the Irish as well as their hospitality and helpfulness. The girls learn a lot about themselves and their lives. What changes would be made before their week in Ireland is over.

Great read...I enjoyed it. Lots of detail about places in Ireland, fairy mounds and holy wells, with a touch of romance and humor and much more.

Two middle-aged sisters travel to Ireland without their husbands and decide to explore the Emerald Isle off the beaten path. Nikki and Kenna have different reasons for making the trip, Nikki leaving a loveless marriage, Kenna for an adventure after quitting her job. They meet an elderly woman in Boston's Logan Airport who is returning to her home on the west coast of Ireland and who invites the sisters to visit. They eventually get there only to discover Aoife (pro. Ee-fa) is the mother of a man they've met in a pub. The story is told both from the sisters' point of view and Aoife's family and the intersection of their lives. I enjoyed the author's debut novel both for the story as well as the description of the places visited by the sisters in their quest to find fairy mounds and holy wells (and deciding how they want to live their lives). The ending was a little abrupt and I wondered if it may be leading to a sequel. If so, I would definitely read it!

Loved reading this as it felt like I was there.

Having visited Ireland on 2010 with my daughter and having meandered as many places as possible it was thrilling to close my eyes and see exactly what the author was describing . It was especially nice as this was a part of the country we didn’t really take enough time to explore. Her writing whether you’ve visited Ireland or not describes the geography so you feel you are actually there. The story line was interesting based on visiting the different wells and how both ladies were able through letting go find their true future desires.

I loved this book! Perhaps it is because we are leaving for Ireland in a few days and this was like a tour of the western coast. I loved the thought of fairies, good ones and bad ones, the Holy wells and all of the little villages they drove through. The people were wonderful and friendly and I think they hit a pub in every town they went through.

The characters and their interactions was interesting and what came to my mind as I read this book is how short life is. We need to enjoy every minute and choose to be happy. We als0 need to tell those we love, how we feel every day!

I enjoyed this book. The two sisters are very likable and their adventures in Ireland are just fun. Nikki reminds me of a friend who also would travel to the Holy Wells with crystals always looking out for the fairy hills. This book made me want to travel back to Ireland and rent a car and hike to the different Holy Wells.

Meh...

The story is juvenile with simplistic dialogue, but I enjoyed most of the descriptions of places I have visited in Ireland. At least I enjoyed thinking about those places and consider visiting some that I have not been to. The author might be interested to know that those little ladders or stairways over fences in the fields are called stiles.

Fantasy and historical fiction means, this book mentions fairies, and there is a lot of crystal dependence, and ghosts. HS is for some history of Ireland.
It was a quick, fun little read. I love Ireland and like to read books that take place there. The many characters were fun to love and hate, there was some drama, love, humor and adventure. Good things to have all in one book.
