It's so rare for a series to end on its own terms, and yet, it's so nice when it happens. I understand why some people may not like this ending, but, in my opinion, the series was building up to it, and the execution was mostly flawless.
This has become one of my favorite series, easily, and I'm sad to see it end, but, at the same time, glad it never really had a quality drop or weird terrible arc. Great execution from start to finish, and that alone is enough for me to recomend it.

August 8, 2025I'm honestly so sad that it's over. I think I could have read about Ko and Nazuna for a long time. I really hope we get some kind of spin off in the future.
It was so captivating to read about all these characters. Learn how they spend their life, how they view the night.
It just makes everything so magical.
Now I'm just going to cry in a corner because what else can I do. 😭

This was a disappointing end to the series. It feels like nothing was really accomplished. The big hurdle of their relationship was ignored, and instead of solving their problem, the characters chose to ignore it. Ko isn't a human anymore; he's been a half-vampire for a while. I feel there must have been some sort of solution/exception that would have led to a happy ever after. Instead, they chose the worst possible path and did nothing to help their relationship.

The writing has been on the wall for Ko and Nazuna for some time now, and it was writ very large in the penultimate volume. Does all that work pay off in the final volume? Mostly, yes.
Not at the start, mind you, as we get one last punching sequence that reminds me of the things that weren’t so great when the series shifted focus. Yeah, it’s full of exposition, but I’ve never felt this was a good action manga.
The upshot is that Nazuna is distancing herself from Ko and refusing to drink his blood. Or anybody’s, for that matter. Which means she’s going to die a very slow death and also may go a little crazy.
We get the alternate take on this story, courtesy of Nazuna’s dreams, where she sees her life as a normal human. It’s very sweet, if deliberately pedestrian, until she heartbreakingly realizes it’s a dream and reality encroaches once more.
At this point it’s clear that things aren’t going well. Will Ko turn? Can he be turned? Can Nazuna survive? All things that may, or may not, be answered here.
What I loved here was the turn to a simple arc with an ocean visit to that forms Nazuna’s plans for her own future. It calls back to the original focus of the series and its melancholy, but now tinged with the star-crossed nature of its characters.
I am going to pause here and mention how ridiculous it is that they focus on Nazuna having a bikini, when she’s spent 90% of the series half-naked anyway. I have to believe that was deliberate.
This section is really well done and quite emotional as both the characters and reader start to see where this is going. The shot of Ko, alone amidst the surging crowds of subway people, in his own world, is pretty apt.
The epilogue is just a little bit extra to wrap things up and works as a fitting ending. Was this a happy ending? No, it’s not, really, but it is both hopeful and satisfying and they don’t all have to work out in the end.
As if that wasn’t enough, we then get a slew of 4-koma omake that touch on tons of the series’ side characters and plot points. It helps to lift the mood just enough after that ending.
Overall, a good series. A truly fantastic run at the start that spun off into something I wasn’t enamoured of, yet it came back to its roots by the end and that ocean segment really hit my emotions hard.

Un shonen muy sólido y redondo, entiendo que a la gente le decepcione el final. Pero a mi me parece perfecto, no todas las historias de amor llegan a cristalizar y no todos los enamorados están destinados a estar juntos.

Worst possible ending for Kou, Nazuna and Mahiru. Which were the only characters that I was interested in. They all had angst for the entire series about the issues they were grappling with and in the end they all just decided to ignore or give up before looking into any possibilities. I don’t usually write spoiler reviews so I will be sure to tag this one as such. I just have a few points to make that I found irritating.
1. It seems clear to me that Kiku groomed Mahiru to be with her eventually since his early childhood. She even convinced him as a grieving child to hate and disassociate from everyone emotionally, thus making him an ideal target. She is trash.
2. Kiku’s story did not read as sad or longing for love to me. It struck me simply as she had grown bored as a vampire and decided she wanted a human relationship experience. She wanted everything. And to get it all she groomed, warped, manipulated and stole Mahiru’s life and future away. In my opinion she didn’t love him despite what the story says. She only loved her fantasy. And I do not believe for a single second that she wouldn’t be highly aware of Mahiru’s immediate suicide. She knows what she did to him. He was 100% warped. He wouldn’t go on without her. He felt his family left him alone, so you think he was willing to be left alone and abandoned by Kiku for eternity? No, obviously not.
3. Mahiru is tragic. The person he genuinely loved (platonically) was Kou. And given the circumstances at the time he COULD have had a happier existence by becoming vampires with Kou and retaining their bond of brotherhood/friendship and creating new memories.
4. There was no real reason for me to believe that Nazuna and Kou couldn’t work out as vampires. She is only half and does not know jack crap about how it works. And they NEVER looked into other possible half vampires though they suspect they exist. So instead Nazuna lives in isolated angsty heart ache and misery away from everyone she knows. While Kou bides his time for one year to go see her again. He OBVIOUSLY believes they have every chance of being together just fine. But she had no intention of exploring it, none. And in the end STALEMATE.
5. So let’s recap…
Of the two boys we got one dead in the ground. And one now warped into a hybrid human/vampire with no future he looks forward to and will hang on the perpetual rejection throughout his lifespan or eternity if he gets that vampire “perk” from Nazuna.
6. Oh and side note they did Akira dirty. This poor girl lost the only 2 people she had as friends. And let’s be real, she loved Kou. So she also had ongoing romantic heartbreak. The story never delved into her and to why she perpetually can’t sleep and wanders the streets at night. They never put it into the story, but she has every reason to have full distain for vampires. She was attacked by a blood starved one. She had one best friend emotionally and psychologically warped into a duo suicide. And the other friend and unrequited love makes it obvious that she is worthless to his life now and in the future. Because he COULD choose to be with her and have a life. She would be the absolute best thing for him. But he is warped too. Sad to say it, but the moral of this story is that vampires suck.
7. When this sort of weird ending happens with otherwise strong series I always wonder if this was truly the best the author could imagine? Or was it an issue of writers block? Time restraints? Or were they just bored with their creation and want to hastily wrap it up to move on to something they were more enthusiastic about?

i can’t believe it’s finally over, i’m feeling peak bittersweetness right now. while reading this series wrap up, i kept waiting for something sad or tragic to drop in the final moments of nazuna and ko’s relationship. however, nothing crazy happens. their relationship just fizzles out and they separate for years.
but upon reflection, i think the fact that we never got the ending where ko gets to become a vampire first before they fell in love with one another is sad and tragic as it is. it’s slightly unsatisfying, but i think that’s why it makes this ending so good. im only left feeling melancholy, after reading 20 books of two characters having a nice relationship together and working towards a common goal only for it to fall apart in the end. and it’s even worse when they both love each other but can’t be together!!
usually, i would hate this kind of “unsatisfying” ending because it feels like such a waste of everything we’ve been through with these characters. but it really didn’t feel like that with call of the night. again, i’m so amazed at how sad i feel and how i’m yearning for more with these two characters. it did a really good job.
this volume in particular tied up everything super well, with notions from every character. i also want to add i loved ko’s look in the final chapter. the long hair and piercings are always a plus lol! plus i love we got to see a final moment of reunion between ko and nazuna post separation. it gave me hope for their relationship and this feeling like everything will be okay between them.
all in all, im both glad and disappointed it’s over. my final thoughts is call of the night is a great series. its technically “boring” and slow but thats why i enjoyed it so much. it’s a slice of life manga where you really feel like you’re apart of the story and present with the characters. it sounds weird, but being boring at times is actually a strength of this series. it made me feel like how it is to be out at night with no one around. of corse with this series being more slice of life, the action in this series was such a welcomed surprise and kept it interesting. the characters were well crafted and written, and the humor was a stand out in the writing. i really hope to see more from this author in the future.

Over the past 2 weeks I've absolutely loved this series. Having just finished it I was a little confused at first with the ending but once I looked at it a little more (and looked online for other people's interpretations) I am glad the author chose to keep it bittersweet and hopeful. I'm not going to give a whole plot synopsis or spoil the ending outright but it's not often I go through an entire series quickly if at all. You, the reader, are invested in their relationship as well as the relationships within their friend groups as well. Worldbuilding is done amazingly and the character development is extremely apparent. Some parts of the story did feel a little short (like the detective's forgiveness arc being so quick). If you do read this series, make sure to also read the paradise arc as it is what gives the actual ending itself that hopefulness.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this final volume but as it concluded I felt bittersweet. I loved the two MCs and the unique spin on vampires. The opening has a big fight that didn't feel needed but wasn't bad. The rest of the book focused on Ko and Nazuna having sweet and touching moments together. Ending a series has to be difficult and for the most part this brought a series that I really enjoyed to a satisfying conclusion. I think that as I brew on it more, I will enjoy it more and fill in some of the purposefully left open nature of it with my own thoughts and ideas.

With a great deal of sadness in my heart this series has come to an end. I mean I love Ko and Nazuna. I think there would of, could of, been more to say and do but alas it shall not be. It is ok we got a peak of the future and who knows what will come from it. But I have the memories and they were fun.

I loved that there was an ending without any ambiguity. They found each other again and are learning to navigate their relationship.

Sad to see this end, but I loved that it ended as it did. I was worried towards the end of volume 19 and the beginning of this one and I was bracing myself for a melancholy downbeat ending. I was pleasantly surprised it went in the direction it did. I won’t spoil it for those who haven’t finished it. Suffice it to say, it was a near perfect manga and will be sorely missed.

overall a pretty good ending, not sure how i feel at the moment about it, did I want a conclusion to their story or the more open to interpretation ending, but as it stands I am satisfied with how it's all come to an end.
