The Becoming #0.5

The Becoming: Origins

Rate this book
In January 2009, the Michaluk Virus escaped from the Centers for Disease Control and decimated Atlanta, Georgia. It spread to the major city centers of the southeast, wrecking havoc in Memphis, Birmingham, Mobile, Jackson, Biloxi, and New Orleans.

This is the story of how it began.

In The Becoming: Origins, Brandt Evans’s life is spiraling out of control. Depressed at the way his life is heading and desperate to help his sister pay for school, he accepts an offer from Dr. Derek Rivers that will result in either a large payday…or his death.

Instead, what results is the beginning of the end of the world.

In The Becoming: Brothers in Arms, Theo and Gray Carter find themselves surrounded by chaos, death, and misery on all sides. As their worlds collapse around them, both are forced to do the unimaginable to not only ensure their survival but to protect each other from the cannibalistic infected that cross their paths.

Weaponless and alone, the two brothers quickly learn that the only thing they can count on is each other.

**This edition of stories from The Becoming universe features a revised and rewritten edition of The Becoming: Brothers in Arms, previously released in March 2012.

Jessica Meigs is the author of The Becoming, a post-apocalyptic thriller series that follows a group of people trying to survive a massive viral outbreak in the southeastern United States. After gaining notoriety for having written the first two books in the series on a variety of BlackBerry smartphones, she self-published two novellas that now make up part of the first book in the series. In April 2011, she accepted a deal with Permuted Press to publish The Becoming as a series of novels. The first of the series, entitled The Becoming, was released in November 2011, and was named one of Barnes & Noble’s Best Zombie Fiction Releases of the Decade by reviewer Paul Goat Allen.

In 2019, Jessica began self-publishing again, this time exploring a new universe with The Unnaturals Series, in which a group of government-employed agents discover that the wheels of the Biblical apocalypse are in motion…and they’re the only ones who can stop it.

In late 2020, after obtaining the rights for the series back from the publisher, Jessica began reissuing The Becoming Series in revised and expanded editions. The new editions of the series are available now on all major ebook retailers.

I read The Becoming series back in 2013-14 and recently come across the prequel Origins. Origins is a three part book that contains three stories; Origins, Brothers in Arms, and Deliverance. Each story introduces a different set of soon-to-be survivors for the post-apocalyptic series The Becoming. It is interesting background for those who have already read The Becoming or more so for those that have not. The summary for Origins mentions a rewrite for Brothers in Arms. I’m not sure what the rewrite involved having never read the original, but I wonder if it consisted of the homosexual relationship between Theo and Dillon. Can’t imagine why Meigs would add or enhance said topic, but I’m sure it would alienate some readers.

Good back story on Brandt, and the re-do of Brothers in Arms was very good too. I liked all the changes that were made . I will be patiently waiting for the next book.
