Renowned cook, Sally Wise has always wanted her own cooking school, and her own farm, where she could grow the things she wants to cook with. One day she and her husband came across a property in Tasmania's Derwent Valley with an orchard full of fruit trees, and a funny old chalet/cabin out the back. A plan began to take shape...
In this, her latest book, Sally shares 250 recipes she's gathered over a year of growing, cooking, setting up school and house and managing an eccentric household of family and other animals.
Like Nigel Slater’s KITCHEN DIARIES, and Sally's early best-seller, A YEAR IN A BOTTLE, this is a charming portrait of tree-change and a cookbook to treasure.
I loved reading this memoir/cookbook about Sally Wise and her first year on a farm near Molesworth, Tasmania. She’s a good clear writer, mixes her narrative with many great recipes. Her cooking school sounds fantastic. She makes use of every type of fruit and vegetable. I have her feijoa jelly and jam recipes to use soon, I hope.
Exceptional and made even better by the fact that I got to visit this very place in the middle of reading it! Loved the journal style format with recipes along the way. Really gave me a feel for what it was like to experience that first year on the farm.
Brilliant book! I read this several years ago, but still remember it quite vividly. For those of you that like to cooking, sustainability, rural life, community connections, and the beautiful island of Tasmania, I can recommend this book. Well written and engaging along the way.
This wasn't a bad read, interesting to read about Sally, her family & their love of food, and the process of buying the farm. I have not had great success with some of Sally's recipes, & it's not that I'm an inexperienced cook
I can only hope that one day my older self will be as fulfilled and content in life. Very happy to have discovered Sally Wise and her bountiful kitchen. I will now hop up and start cooking. Full of love, life, family, friends, food, stories, fun and warmth.
Very good within its genre - great stories and inspiring recipes, but I found the diary format a bit linear. This had to go back to the library before I finished it but would be worth borrowing again.
I found this very inspiring for our situation and enjoyed reading about her life. It wasn't a terribly exciting book but I still loved the gentle rhythm.
