Ajaibnya, Tuhan masih menyayangi Shanom.
"I swear to God, you'll watch me with your eyes widely open as I set your world on fire, Galiel."
disclaimer: i know this book is not for me. it’s clearly for a certain audience that i’m not a part of. i only read this book to spice up my bookshelf -- and if you like this book, good for you!! :)
sebelum ngerant, i want to say: the narrative style the author used is actually interesting. the author ngecampur 1st POV and 3rd POV, and i think it was a good choice. pembaca jadi dapet lebih banyak info, bukunya less confusing dan alurnya lebih kerasa.
HOWEVER...
the main characters are stupid as hell.
the book acknowledges this (bukan direct quote): “shanom sebenernya pinter, dia kuliah di luar negeri, tapi kalo di cinta dia stupid banget.” just because something is acknowledged doesn’t make it good writing. what happened to SHOW DON'T TELL?
also… kok bisa sih shanom kuliah di melbourne? girl, your english is awful. (to be fair, the english in this whole book is terrible, tapi it's weird because shanom is supposedly foreign-educated.)
also, quote yang diplak di cover is literally:
> "Loving you was beautiful, yet, so hurt." so no need to guess isi bukunya gimana.
as a book marketed as bilingual, it’s not doing a great job. you acknowledge the characters’ stupidity, but not their english? but i guess it’s justifiable, they’re all nepo babies, right? shanom bisa aja masuk melbourne karena ayahnya kaya. problem solved.
i will give credit for one thing: sifat shanom yang bucin dan gak respect boundaries galiel ternyata dimention and IT WAS TAKEN SERIOUSLY.
nah, sekarang galiel.
he isn't charming. AT ALL. masa shanom memperjuangkan dia karena dia pernah ngebalut kaki kucing terluka PAS TK? and IIRC, that backstory isn’t even mentioned after that. that’s it? that’s the romantic foundation?
what baffled me was how easy it was for galiel to FALL IN LOVE with shanom (in the next life). this is the typical "ini cewe satu-satunya yang gasuka gue, makanya gue makin tertarik." trope. seharusnya ada aspek lain dong??
pas dia suka pun... let’s just say... he sometimes acts like a baby. his babyish behavior is written as comedic relief. pas dia sakit, pas dia masak untuk shanom, etc. but all i did was grimace. gak imut at all. how is this supposed to be attractive?
makanya, pas momen emosional, i did not care. bahasanya corny, karakternya annoying, so nothing landed emotionally.
direct quote: > *I, indeed, cannot change the past. But, Sha, let me tell you one thing. If you die, I die. If you must go to hell, then I would go to hell with you, cause I don’t even want us to be apart. I’ll bind your soul to mine. So, if you have to sink in fire then we sink together, I won’t let you suffer alone, Shanom, jelasnya.*
wow, galiel. you are so romantic. so deep. so meaningful. i totally can’t see that you’re looking for a tiktok-material-love-interest-quote moment. and... shanom... feels... attracted to this? okay. sure. cue the getting back together arc. wow, i wonder what will cause the third-act breakup!
**SPOILER AREA**
totally not the side chick that we haven’t heard of in a while, right?
now i wanna talk about the plot. it was fine. really. nothing remarkable. except for the plot twist and the mention of shanom’s power. TAPI ITU MASALAHNYA: i wish her power were more prominent throughout the book. she mentioned them once, then they didn’t come up again for hundreds of pages.
but... surprise!!! her power is a tool for the plot twist. by the time a side character mentioned that shanom had "lost" her powers, i clocked the twist immediately. it wasn’t shocking at all. so... how was i supposed to feel?
"shanom menghakimi galiel for something he didn’t do." there was a POSSIBILITY that he would still kill her -- if his side chick influenced him enough. shanom's anger was justifiable.
"deva yang bertanggung jawab atas pembunuhan shanom" and galiel went through with it in shanom’s vision. they were BOTH wrong. the story doesn’t really explore that. it just... paints galiel as a saint for shanom in the end.
and the ending... ya... biasa aja sih. nothing remarkable about it either. i do wish we knew what happened to the side characters, though.
that’s it for this rant. it’s messy. but well, what can anyone expect from a rant? i must say, this was an entertaining read, only because it was annoying.

Fifth of December karya @nas.zip.
Galiel malah mencintai perempuan lain. Shanom yang terlanjur tergila-gila dgn suaminya itu malah but dgn segala keburukannya. Dia tetep cinta sama Galiel.
yap! i give this for 4,5/5 love the naration yang super cantikk! and, the happy ending make me falling in love. Lastly, Galiel lu kocak banget sumpahh & haha

Ceritanya bikin terombang-ambing terus, jadi candu bacanya—
sometimes make me cry, sometimes make me laugh. Beneran kayak naik roller coaster, baru naik ke atas langsung jatuh ke bawah. Aku paling mewek pas Shanom ngerasa kehilangan papanya, like—ya know lah....
aku sempet intip bagian akhir, aku kita bakal sad end, ternyata enggak, dong!
Arranged marriage. She loves first, he fell harder. Tapi awalnya, ia hanyalah one sided love. Compared to Cake Shop, i like this book better.
