Rick Gualtieri loves to write adventure, mayhem, and snarky dialogue. His bestselling Tome of Bill series combines all of this into a world of supernatural danger with hard-hitting action and plenty of sharp-tongued geeky humor.
Rick lives alone in a dark, evil place called New Jersey with only his wife, three kids, and countless pets to both keep him company and constantly plot against him. When he's not busy monkey-clicking out words, he can typically be found jealously guarding his collection of vintage Transformers from all who would seek to defile them.
I went back and forth while reading this one on whether or not I actually liked this book? The idea was had potential, and the characters were fun (mostly), but ultimately I think the writing sort of killed this one for me.
The main character, Tamara, felt like she was written by a man. She had essentially two character traits; she wants to boink someone and wants to punch literally everything literally all the time which got old, quick. I also hated how her father refused to accept her not wanting to be called by a particular nickname.
I did love Tamara's friend and her family. They were really fun and cute. This book did have some funny moments, as well as some really great action sequences, but ultimately it just wasn't for me. While I liked some of the characters- I never actually connected to any of them, or to the story leaving me not caring what actually happened..never a good sign.
I've tried two books by this author and I think that their writing just isn't for me.
Would like to note that I listened to the audio of this one, and the narrator Rachel Dulude, was phenomenal. Her voice kind of reminded me of Katey Sagal.
A delightful supernatural story that clearly got the memo: fantasy doesn’t always have to be brooding and heavy. Sometimes, it can just be silly and fun!
I listened to this as an audiobook, and it was the perfect palate cleanser between other more emotionally devastating books!
Witches. Werewolves. Plus a protagonist whose family tree turns out to be full of secrets. It kicked off with serious YA vibes but somewhere along the way, bodies started dropping so graphically that I found myself laughing out loud. Special mention for the death by garden gnome scene!! Omigods!!
It was sort of campy, chaotic, and weirdly charming. exactly what I was looking for.
I listened to the audio for this book and forced myself to finish it. The whole book was annoying. The story was annoying and most of the characters, especially the parents, were even more annoying. The only character I liked was Reva and Tamara had some pretty good snarky comments. Other than that - Ugh - thank goodness it was short and now I can move onto something else.
Paused at 52%. This one is actually very interesting and kept my attention well in the beginning and I will probably finish it eventually. However I would have been way more interested in reading Tamara's parents story.
