Undefeated galactic heavyweight champion Korak the Cutter has defeated all challengers, destroying everyone in his path, but the wins aren't as easy as they used to be. After a decade of perfect fighting, his age is catching up with him. For a Quyth Warrior, that means he's slowing down, and speed is the name of the game in mixed martial arts.
At this late stage in his career, he faces a nightmare savage and unpredictable Chiyal "The Heretic" North. As crime lords and promoters try to fix the fight, and as managers cling to dreams of lost glory, Korak and Chiyal must find their way into the octagon to decide once and for all who is the greatest of all time.
Co-written with Parsec Award-winning author Matt Wallace, TITLE FIGHT delivers a scifi/mma one-two knockout.
This novella is part of the Galactic Football League series, which is described as THE BLIND SIDE meets THE GODFATHER meets STAR WARS.
#1 New York Times best-selling author Scott Sigler is the creator of fifteen novels, six novellas and dozens of short stories. He gives away his stories as weekly, serialized, audiobooks, with over 40 million episodes downloaded.
Scott launched his career by releasing his novels as author-read podcasts. His rabid fans were so hungry for each week’s episode that they dubbed themselves the “Junkies.” The first hit is always free …
He is also is a co-founder of Empty Set Entertainment, which publishes his Galactic Football League series. He lives in San Diego, CA, with his wife and wee little Dogs of Døøm.
As in the 'real' GFL books, this is heavy on detail and description. This is out of necessity: the aliens envisioned, and their biological enhancements, are so 'out there', so 'science fiction', that you need grounding to help understand what is happening.
So, it is a little clumsy. But this tale manages to be remarkable too. The tales of the two fighters set for the big fight are well developed and each character thought out with skill. For such a short book, to pack in so much, in terms of idea, universe, plot and character, is...remarkable.
If you like the galactic football series then you will like this book. It's also good for those who like the UFC and don't mind the fighters being an alien species.
This was so BAMF. I love Matt Wallace; his slinger series is to die for as is most of his other series. This was a perfect melding of two authors and it was seamless. It got me through the shell shock of the championship and by god I needed it.
What happens when two immovable forces collide? What if those forces only survive because they are immovable? What if those same forces are pure of intent and as such used as pawns in others larger game of profit, but none of the players care so long as the goal is attained? That goal? To fight. Not to win titles. Not to unify championships. Not to have eternal glory. But simply to be a true fighter because words like warrior or gladiator are just words. That is the power of this novel. That is why "Title Fight" for all of its raw brutality, unflinchingly pugnacious language and pummeling imagery is a rare and desirable book. No, I'm not a fan of boxing or books about it. But I AM a fan of GOOD books that use real characters and EFFECTIVELY use pugilism as a vehicle to see the inner psyche of a pure fighter. I think that the most powerful moments in the novella came when former and current fighters didn't fight, but talked. Honestly. Openly. And fully about what the reasons are for why they do what they do and why pain isn't to be avoided. But to be embraced as a goal and vehicle in attaining the ultimate goal. To be known as one who truly fought. Not sparred. Not scuffled. Not wrestled around. But FOUGHT! Ding. Ding. Ding.
This is a novella that takes place in the "Galactic Football League" series. This follows two MMA fighters as they are on a collision course to meet inside the ring. This is a graphic book that has plenty of graphic violence.
This fits in perfectly with his overall series as a couple of characters from the football books make an appearance here. If you have read Scott Sigler books before you have a good idea what to expect. He doesn't hold back on the violence and that is the case here. I enjoyed this book but not as much as the football books. I am not an MMA fan so that might be the reason. I believe the reason was I never got behind one of the fighters like I do the football team. It was well written and had enough subplots to keep the pace going. The final fight was excellent as I visibly cringed (in a good way) with the disturbing action.
This was a welcome addition to this universe and a quick read. I do suggest reading the other novels before reading this one. Those other novels are so enjoyable that they might have affected my rating for this one. I just couldn't put this one on the same level but nonetheless this was a pleasant read.
I'm a big fan of Scott Sigler's GFL books and the novellas he's releasing with other authors to further the addictions of his hardcore addicts. Title Fight is set in the universe of the GFL, but is not a book about galactic football. This is all about MMA and the true fighters at the top of the game who seek to test themselves against the best of the best.
As with all of the GFL books, crime lords and underhanded dealings abound when Korak and Chai - the 2 best fighters in opposing MMA leagues - are set to fight for the IFA championship. There is a pleasing mix of brutal violence and warrior spirit in this book in similar ways to the other GFL books, but with an MMA twist rather than the speed and patter of the grid iron.
If you enjoy the GFL, this a great book to get into the feel of the same universe, even though it's not about your favorite Ionath Krakens. It's a fun and fast addition to the siglerverse which I highly recommend.
An MMA story that ties into Siglers' GFL? Sounds good!
Created a bit of the atmosphere that The Rookie did (it takes place between The Rookie and the Starter I believe. You see some of the same characters, Greedok the Splithead, Doc Patah, etc.
This story sets up the fight scene like boxing. Fixed fights, mobs getting involved etc. But only the true warriors will rise against that to fight honorably.
Korak the Cutter, world champion Quyth warrior, undefeated and Chial "The Heretic" North, the first Human to really make a run for the title.
Lots of drama, and lots of action, with a bit of a surprise ending. Quick read, very fun. And if you don't want to read it, it's of course available for download FOR FREE at scottsigler.com
This is perhaps one of my favorite Sigler short stories, and one of my favorite stories from his GFL series. One thing to note about Siglers GFL ( Galactic football league ) series is that its not really about the football - tho you definitely can feel Siglers passion for the sport. As it really reads more like a futuristic Crime novel, with a galactic space opera back drop and incredibly interesting characters. Now take that formula and apply it to Combat sports, turn the volume up to eleven and you go from rock'n'roll to pure HEAVY METAL. I desperately want to see more of this aspect in the siglerverse with a follow up to this novella, a boy can only dream. This book is pure fun and more than worth the short amount of time it takes to read or listen to.
Excellent novella in the GFL universe/series. Compelling story, interesting (though absolutely INSANE) characters, and a climactic battle that contained one of the most sickening, savage, and incredible victory moves I've ever read. Seriously, I did not believe it happened until I read it again. My jaw dropped, and all I could think was: "What the f*ck did I just read?! No way that happened... Holy sh*t, that totally happened!" No clue what will happen next in this series, but I can't wait to find out.
Whoa, I just survived a testosterone poisoning :-)
Loved it and the sole two reasons it got 4 out of 5 stars is a) inplausibility of the universe the story was set in, b) main characters seemed a bit too single-minded and underdeveloped personality-wise. Not like any of that took the edge off the suspense and sheer enjoyment of the reading/listening expirience.
I love the GFL books and was in the need of a quick GFL fix and thought this could help me out.
I enjoyed this book but I did have a tougher time caring about the characters. Don't get me wrong, they were interesting characters but I wasn't even sure who I wanted to win.
If you are a GFL fan it is worth a read. They tip their hat enough to the GFL series mentioning characters and places from there.
Another GFL novella I chewed thru in record time - loved it! I remember hearing this podcast "back in the day," but couldn't remember much about it (I DID remember a certain key fight move near the end, though, as it was absolutely unforgettable!). This is another great collaboration between Sigler and Wallace, and I look forward to even more GFL novellas as the series moves ahead.
a fun side story in the larger GFL universe. Would be hard to grasp the alien anatomies if one hasn't been reading The Rookie and others in the series by Sigler but this is a great bone-crunching novella. The MMA stuff isn't too technical but it should serve both MMA fanatics and people that haven't found the sport appealing.
I didn't think I would like listening to a boxing related story, but it's the FDO we're talking about here. Great intergalactic story of warriors fighting in the GFL or IFL. of course this novel takes place in the 2600's. Awesome book!
Exciting, great characters and races like many of the GFL series from Scott Sigler. Good plot twist at the end, but it felt limited. Given that it is a Novella… I guess I was left wanting more book and better story development. It is a fast, fun read.
I really enjoyed Infected by Sigler, so I was excited to find out he offers his audio books as a podcast! It was a super quick listen and the audio was very well done. I like the world that the story is set in and will definitely be visiting the other books in the series.
This fits in around the same era as Scott Sigler's GFL series. GFL being the Galactic Football League. Check them out. The Rookie, The Starter, The All-Pro and MVP - last one not published yet.
