A female amateur sleuth whodunnit with a hint of humour

In a charming seaside town, secrets don’t stay buried for long…

Body of Chef Found in Wall Three Years After He ‘Left to go to Australia’
Human remains found inside the wall of a disused building have now been identified as those of Victor Blackwell. He was the head chef at Windstanton’s The Seaside Lounge until just over three years ago, when, according his friends, he left for a job in Australia. Detective Inspector Albert Finch from Fenshire’s Cold Case Unit has asked for anyone who has information about the chef’s movements three years ago to come forward.
We have no choice! With only three weeks until the Grand Opening, the last thing Bea and Perry need is the grim discovery of a skeleton in the wall of Simon and Ryan’s soon-to-open restaurant, SaltAir. But when it’s designated a crime scene, and the policeman in charge of the investigation into Vic’s murder refuses to let them have access to continue the refurbishment, they have no other option than to investigate the murder themselves or risk letting Simon and Ryan down.

But in a town where everyone harbours secrets, can they uncover the truth in time or will SaltAir’s opening be a damp squib?

Helen Golden spins crimes that are charmingly British, delightfully deadly, and served with a twist of humour.

With quirky characters, clever red herrings, and plots that keep the pages turning, she’s the author of the much-loved A Right Royal Cozy Investigation series, following Lady Beatrice and her friends—including one clever little dog—as they uncover secrets hidden in country houses and royal palaces. Her new historical mystery series, The Duchess of Stortford Mysteries, is set in Victorian England and introduces an equally curious sleuth from Lady Beatrice’s own family tree—where murders are solved over cups of tea, whispered gossip, and overheard conversations in drawing rooms and grand estates.

Helen lives in a quintessential English village in Lincolnshire with her husband, stepdaughter, and a menagerie of pets—including a dog, several cats, a tortoise, and far too many fish.

If you love clever puzzles, charming settings, and sleuths with spark, her books are waiting for you.

A Death of Fresh Air is the new book in the Right Royal Cozy Mystery series. I've read all the previous books and love the series and characters. It's always a treat to have a new one to devour.

The new book begins with the chance discovery of a man believed to have left the country three years before. What follows is typical of Bea and Perry's determination to solve the mystery of how the body ended up in the new restaurant, who put it there, and why the poor man had to die. Never to be put off by looming deadlines, our intrepid duo, ably assisted by some of our series regulars, get to work. And the story that unfolds is as complex and satisfying as other books in the series. I enjoy these stories because the solutions never feel contrived while remaining complex. The solution is never easy.

While all this is happening, both Bea and Perry are contending with challenges in their personal lives as well, which moves the series on but never overwhelms the mystery. I think it's a tough balancing act, and Helen Golden manages it perfectly.

Thoroughly enjoyable and highly recommended.

This book got me into it very quickly & I’m very glad I was able to read it in one go, otherwise it would have been a very late night. Lady Beatrice & her business partner Perry Juke are involved in the refurbishment of Clary House. It was a restaurant a few years ago & now two famous chefs are planning on reopening it in its former glory. One snag! On knocking down an unwanted wall a skeleton was found inside it! It turned out to be the former chef from the previous restaurant who went missing, believed to have headed off to Australia. Naturally the sleuths get involved. Lady Bea’s friend Richard, who happens to be in the London police, is in the background as things progress. So many puzzles come up along the way. Are they part of the mystery or not? Eventually all is resolved tying up several loose ends that have cropped up along the way.

I continue to thoroughly enjoy this cozy mystery series, and I love the new covers! Yet another interesting mystery with a handful of questionable possible culprits for a cold case. It had me guessing throughout! The final denouement was definitely satisfying. I also enjoyed the further advancement of the relationship between Bea and Rich. While the book could mostly be read without reading the previous books, you’ll miss a lot of the relevant background of the character, but I do recommend starting the series from the beginning!

A Death of Fresh Air is A Right Cozy Investigation by Helen Golden. I think that the author was smart to begin the book with a look at the murder. I did not know who the killer was, but, the reader saw the killing and a quick glance at why the chef was murdered. The author did not take me on a fast track across the book; she slowly unfolded the story like a flower. Lady Bea and Perry are refurbishing a restaurant to open Salt Air. I liked the characters and enjoyed the surprises along the wsy. I received an arc.for free and am leaving my review voluntarily.

First of all, I love this series; it is based on a believable premise and the characters have been beautifully developed over the time span of the series. The mystery in this book is very credible, and though I came close to 'guessing' what had happened, I did not guess the person who did the evil deeds.
It was an immersive read; I want to go to this town, the restaurants, the houses the characters live in, because the settings and their descriptions were so evocative and rich. Sadly, I guess I cannot go there and meet these people in real life, I will just wait eagerly for the next book!

This is a series I have become very fond of, but still trying to read them all.

This latest story has all the same characters in it, with, of course the new ones pertinent to the latest mystery. As usual the captivating story has been well written with believable characters and story line. Spoil yourself, pick l,”up this book sit down in a comfortable chair and follow the adventures of Lady Rossex and her faithful friends and family, not forgetting Daisy the West Highland White Terrier!

This was highly suspenseful and the drama

doesn't end. The sleuths seemed more connected and invested in the crimes than the police!! I enjoyed the adventure and Daisy was a rich bonus. Then you get a romance growing too. This was a complex mystery that kept developing as it all unfolded. Wow!! The killer seemed to have no conscience, remorse,or guilt- a sociopath or psychopath! What a fantastic cover up! I'm gobsmacked and clueless. I voluntarily read a free copy of this book provided by book sirens and am giving an honest opinion.

This series has gone from strength to strength, with the unlikely investigative team of Bea, Perry, Simon and Fitzwilliam working towards the apprehension of the various murder culprits throughout the series. Although not always on the same page at the same time!
The latest quest, to find the killer of a well renowned chef who had been found in the wall three years after supposedly leaving for Australia gets a little too frustrating as the cold case officer has little time for the gang’s observations and opinions. But the truth will out and together Bea and her friends working to unfold the twists and turns make for an amazing read.
Love this series as it throws so many other bits in the background to consider while piecing the evidence together.

Ryan Hawley and Simon Lattimore were opening their restaurant the SaltAir but this plan comes to a holt as a body is found while renovations were being carried out. Lady Beatrice and the team take it upon themselves to solve the mystery.  An intriguing read with humour and mayhem . I received this ARC copy and leave a honest review. Absolutely wonderful mystery!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
All the old familiars are back once again for a riveting and exciting mystery! It's a brilliantly crafted work with many threads and clues woven throughout. At the end when a huge clue is dropped ~ the reader can't help but say ~ no way ~ what a shock! There's just the perfect amount of romantic interaction between Lady Bea and Rich to warm your heart but not douse you in syrup! My favourite character ~ Perry, whose middle name is Drama, takes a step towards 'growing up' and yet retains his over the top personality. There's room for Sam, his friend Archie, and Simon's daughter Ilsa to contribute in upcoming adventures. I have loved this whole series and look forward to reading about them and their incredible mystery solving escapades for years to come!

Simon and Ryan are planning to open a new restaurant but a body is found behind a wall during the refurbishments. The police are painfully slow to investigate so the king's niece Lady Rossex steps in to help her friends get their project back on track by catching the killer...
A Death of Fresh Air is part of the Right Royal Cozy Investigation series of murder mysteries. There are no spoilers about earlier cases but the personal relationships have developed over the series.
As soon as the book mentioned that the old chef had gone to Australia during the last refurbishment and never returned, followed by the decision to remove a wall, I KNEW they would find his body! Lady Bea's boyfriend is no longer part of the royal police protection so isn't leading the case and the new detective is sooooo sloooooow! Bea and Perry have no choice but to try to save the restaurant's opening night by finding the killer themselves.
The victim didn't seem to have any enemies so the first task is to look for potential motives. Things get tense in a professional kitchen so was one of his colleagues to blame? Or how about his ex girlfriend who claims to have ended the relationship? There are lots of plot twists and red herrings for Bea and Perry to wade through, ably supported by their friends and Daisy the dog!
In tandem with the murder investigation, the other main feature of the plot is Bea's feelings towards Rich and the future. The conclusion of the case was a complete surprise, but more importantly the relationship of Rich and Bea has a pleasing development that will melt the hardest heart (yes, even mine!)
A Death of Fresh Air was a hugely enjoyable cosy murder mystery and I loved the royal aspect as usual.

Who Killed the Chef ? . . .

In a semi-unique manner for starting a mystery, the reader is immediately pulled into the scene as the murderer takes the life of the victim. The murder itself was motivated by the victim refusing to agree to taking a monetary offer and walking away from his killer. If he instead chose to refuse the offer, there was no other option than his death. Decision made, the killer slams him over the head. And as the unconscious victim is barely breathing on the floor, his murderer searched his pockets for the keys, then dragged him into the walk-in freezer. He additionally taped the freezer closed just in case the victim somehow woke and used the emergency handle to get out. He also taped his hands to make certain there would be no escape possible. Then the murderer went off to make his plans.

Over three years later, the body of a Chef was discovered in a wall and identified as Victor Blackwell. Detective Inspector Albert Finch was alerting the public that if anyone had any information to share on this case, they need to come forward immediately. This cold case would be causing more than just shock in the community. Bea and Perry have been eagerly awaiting the imminent Grand Opening of Simon and Ryan’s new restaurant, SaltAir. But instead the finalization of the restoration is forced to stop as the crime scene designation prevents further work until the crime is solved. So if Bea and Perry don’t step in and solve the case themselves, it could have a devastating outcome for their friends’ new business venture. Will they find the murderer, if he is even still in the area? Or will they have to give up this time and wait until the police close the case?

Full Disclosure: I was hooked on the cover of this Helen Golden book because of the Westie! I am a sucker for a cute dog, especially a Westie!

I wish I had found this when I lived closer to the beach. It felt like the perfect beach day read. Yes, there is a murder to solve, but the light humor makes this more lighthearted than I expected. I found myself chuckling at the dialogue between characters.

Also, I do enjoy a good British mystery, especially one with a royal amateur sleuth. Lady Beatrice, the niece of King James, is delightful, as are the other characters. I enjoyed all the cooking and baking within the story. I grew up with a great aunt who was obsessed with the British royalty and the chapters detailing The Society Page brought back fond memories of reading about the Royalty.

My main complaint, and it really is more of a personal preference, I felt the chapters were startling short and often jumped to several minutes later within the same day. I felt several of them could have been combined to make larger chapters since they were told from the same main characters POV.

This book is the tenth book in the series. The first books is titled 'Spruced Up For Murder.' I probably would have been more connected to Lady Beatrice if I had read the preceding books!

If you like cozy, British, murder mysteries, this one is worth the read.

Lady Bea & her business partner, Perry are on hand for the renovation of the Clary House. Perry’s husband, Simon, a novelist & celebrity chef, & Ryan, are opening a new restaurant on the site of the Seaside Lounge, closed 3 years ago when the head chef disappeared. When a skeleton is found in the wall, it’s revealed that Chef Vic didn’t relocate to Australia, as believed, but instead was murdered. With an irritable cold case detective heading the investigation and stonewalling our heroes, Lady Bea & Perry know they must get involved. However, Bea is worried that investigating could cause a problem in her fledgling relationship with Richard. Can the intrepid duo unravel this royal mess and save SaltAir’s Grand Opening?

Helen Golden’s Right Royal cozy series has been on my TBR list for a while now. After reading book 10, I am definitely moving the previous volumes higher in the queue. This page turning mystery grabbed me from page one with memorable characters, witty dialogue, and a perplexing puzzle to solve. I love the way Ms. Golden formats her story with a linear progression of time, as well. Enough background is given so that you can jump into the series without feeling lost, even with the extensive cast of characters. While waiting for the next book, I’m looking forward to catching up with the previous ones.

We're back with Lady Bea, Perry, Rich, Simon, Ryan and Daisy in another adventure in the Right Royal cozy series. This time Simon and Ryan are so close to the opening of the restaurant they've been wanting to do since they met. SaltAir is opening in an old Victorian home that had previously held another restaurant that closed 3 years ago and has sat empty since. There's a lot of work needed and during the demolition a body, well bones anyway, is found. The team is in a time crunch to open the restaurant and the cop in church isn't in a hurry so of course the team will investigate!

In the meantime Lady Bea and Rich are figuring out their relationship and taking it slow. They are trying to keep it quiet to avoid all the royal press that will go nuts.

I really enjoyed this book, I actually really like all of Ms Golden's books. They are standalone AND there is a playlist of all the characters in the back that is really helpful.

I received this as an ARC and am volunteering my honest review.

A Death of Fresh Air - Once again unable to put the book down until reaching the great finish.

Beautifully written, fast paced and once again completely surprised me at the end - I love these books by Helen Golden.
Well worth the forgotten cold coffees, half eaten sandwiches and late nightsA Death of Fresh Air (A Right Royal Cozy Investigation Mystery): A female amateur sleuth whodunnit with a hint of humour as once again "I'll just finish this chapter" turns into 5 or 10 more chapters.

What a delightful cozy mystery! I didn’t read the subtitle stating that the book was A Right Royal Cozy, but I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Lady Beatrice and her friends and relatives. A modern Royal, Beatrice prefers to be called Bea, and is very laid back about her relationship to the King. Her best friend Perry is married to Simon who is getting ready to open a restaurant, SaltAir, with Ryan, both chefs. But when they start to renovate the Clary House, previously the Seaside Lounge, they discover a body in a wall. It seems a chef named Vic, disappeared 3-years ago when the lounge was shut down, supposedly heading to a job in Australia, but the circumstances were odd! A Detective Inspector CID Cold Case Unit is assigned but not in a hurry to solve a 3-year-old case! So, Bea and her friends investigate so the opening of SaltAir won’t be delayed. A fun story to read and great characters to follow!

A new restaurant, SaltAir, is slated to open in three week`s time at Clary House in the charming seaside resort of Windstanton. Demolition day in the dining room uncovers a human skeleton and sets off an untimely investigation into what is likely the murder of a previous chef of the prior establishment. Bea and her business partner and bestie Perry Juke reluctantly, once again, take up the reins to speedily solve the cold case mystery. Joining them in their endeavors is Superintendent Richard Fitzwilliam of City Police, Lady Beatrice`s as-yet unofficial beau and the usual gang of friends and family introduced in prior books. The suspect list is long and ever-changing as focus shifts and clues run aground. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, even though I jumped in midway through the series, and now mean to catch up on the missed books for a good binge-read.

Bea and Perry have a knack of finding dead people and when one is found in a stud wall of a restaurant that is about to open in three weeks, they decide they need to get things moving. The restaurant belongs to Perry’s partner and the person is thought to be the previous owner who took off rather unexpectedly a while back. Can the case be sorted and the work get done before the grand opening?

I love this series, it's like sitting down with old friends that make me smile. It's brilliantly written and is a wonderful comfortable read as you would expect from the talented Helen. A great mystery with twists and turns, a little romance and lots of drama all well thought out. A thoroughly entertaining read, can't wait for the next one.

I'm reviewing this as part of a tour with Rachel's Random Resources.

This is part of the Right Royal Cozy Investigation series. I've read some of the others in the series, and I enjoy them. The protagonist is Lady Beatrice, who owns a cute West Highland terrier named Daisy.

I expected to enjoy this instalment too, and I did. The writing has a lovely lighthearted tone, with a feel-good atmosphere, working with its seaside town setting. All of the regular characters are likeable, with fun personalities, and the author brings them to life in an entertaining way, with humorous exchanges.

I know I can always rely on a cosy mystery for a relaxing read, so if you enjoy cosy mysteries, you might like this series.

Thank you to Rachel's Random Resources, and to the author and publisher, for the opportunity to read and review this.

Another brilliant “right royal cozy investigation mystery
Has Lady Bea and the team looking back at the restaurant’s history.
A skeleton hidden in a wall has their opening plans in danger
And the officer investigating unfortunately isn’t a stranger.

Looking back at events from years gone by
Seeking clues, they’ll certainly try.
With key people becoming suspects in the case
Can the team solve it so the opening can take place?

Secrets being kept by so many involved but why?
Who’s telling the truth- and who keeps telling a lie?
With pressure to solve the case as quickly as they can
Lady Bea and Perry really need a plan!

A fascinating read, with surprises, too,
That I don’t hesitate to highly recommend to you!
For my copy of this book I say thank you

Such a wonderful story! I love this quasi realistic modern world and all the characters who dwell in it! Bea is extremely clever and so down to earth. She may be royal but she’s no diva. I love the partnership she and Perry have both professionally and as amateur sleuths. The work so well together and are quite good at sussing out the truth.
The way the author gives us multiple povs and weaves them seamlessly in the narrative is excellent. That’s so difficult to do well and it’s very well done here. I especially liked the moments as the culprit is revealed and we are getting the lowdown from both sides fabulous! Loved all the developments on the personal front for the family so lovely! Great mix of cozy and police procedural with a tricky mystery and wonderful characters!.

This novel is a humorous visit to Paris, solving a murder and kidnap.

The plot is brisk and entertaining: family squabbles escalate until murder barges in.

What makes it work is the collision of domestic drama with mystery; equal parts family therapy session and crime investigation.

Characters sparkle because they’re human. Todd sulks, Catherine frets, Cameron notices everything, and the narrator tries to keep the plot flowing while solving a possible homicide.

The writing style balances humour and suspense. Dialogue is sharp, full of lines you can imagine muttered over a half-finished glass of Bordeaux.

At times, though, the exposition lingers; trimming some backstory would make the pace livelier.

Recommended for readers who enjoy mysteries with a side of family drama and a dash of comedy.

So. Much. Fun.
As always, the relationships were spot on.
It is fantastic that Bea’s relationship with Perry (and with Simon) remains important to her even as she navigates her deepening relationship with Rich.
Bea and Rich are terrific together as they show respect for each other’s abilities and intelligence.
And, the interactions with Bea’s family were fascinating - especially, in the support and love given to Bea.
Of course, Daisy remains adorable.

BTW - the mystery was a corker!
I gasped at the reveal of the killer and reveled in justice being served on that thoroughly nasty rotter.

Although it was my pleasure to receive this ARC from the author, it was completely my choice to share my honest review.

When Chef Vic left with no notice or contact the restaurant closed and had been closed until Ryan Hawley, renowned chef and Bake Off Wars judge, and crime writer Simons, winner of Celebrity Elitechef two years ago announcers I they are opening a restaurant called Salt Air where the closed restaurant was. Bea is going to help make that happen

The body of Victor Blackwell is discovered in the wall. Obviously he never left without a notice, now Bea and Perry Ryan decide if they are going to be able to open the restaurant they need to find who murdered Victor. Loved the surprise ending. Very good book I recommend.

This story has all the ingredients of previous ones but is set in a new location. Bea and Perry are helping with the interior decoration of a new restaurant, owned by Simon and Ryan. We are quickly drawn into the narrative, which becomes complicated following the shocking discovery of a body when a wall is removed during alterations to the restaurant. The plot moves quickly as the 'deadline' for the opening looms. Working against a reluctant police Inspector, Bea and her friends investigate, with the help of Bea's detective boyfriend Richard. Amid tension, intrigue and mystery there is a surprise when we finally discover who the killer is! A really good story, plus the romance between Bea and Richard moves forward. Lovely.

This is the newest book in the series and while the plot easily read as a standalone, I do wish I had read others in the series so I had a bit more of their background. However, once I settled into the story, I enjoyed myself and especially appreciated the character list in the back. I love when authors include things like that.

I very much enjoyed Bea and Perry and their determination to solve the mystery of the body in the wall – nothing deterred them and that was fun to read. The mystery was complex and one I could not figure out before the story revealed the truth. It was very clever of the author to open the book with a scene from the point of view of the murderer. The identity is not revealed and it’s fascinating to read what is happening while also not knowing who the killer is.

Lots of fun and the hint of humor throughout is most enjoyable. (Also, I have to mention the cover–I would have read this book just for the cover alone even if I hadn’t been intrigued by the plot summary!)

Can I say that I love this series and each new book in the series is an absolute pleasure to read. What I love most about this series is that the main characters, Lady Bea, Perry, Simon, and Richard just seem to grow closer and become more in tune with each other. I love the progression of their friendship as well as the progression of Lady Bea's relationship with Richard Fitzwilliam. And it is great that Richard is working with Lady Bea in the solving of mysteries. In this book, Bea and Perry are working on the interior design of a restaurant when the body of the former chef is discovered in a wall. They embark on solving the cold case as the policeman assigned to the case has no real interest in investigating. The solution to the case was certainly a surprise!
