About the author

Moti Nandi was a sports journalist and worked as a sports editor in Anandabazar Patrika. He was awarded the Lifetime Achievement award (2008) at a glittering ceremony to mark the grand finale of the maiden edition of the Excellence in Journalism Awards.

In his novels, he is noted for his depiction of sporting events and many of his protagonists are sports-persons. His first short story was published in Desh weekly on 1957. His story for Pujabarshiki was in Parichoy Magazine on 1985.

মতি নন্দীর লেখার আমি একজন ভক্ত। বেশ ভালো লিখেও ভদ্রলোক আন্ডাররেটেড। তাই শিবি পড়ে খারাপ লাগেনি, শেষটা বাদে।

বইয়ের নাম শিবি হলেও মূল চরিত্র রতন। কাহিনী শুরু হয় রতনের টিন এইজ লাইফ থেকে। সংসারের কর্তা অবিবাহিত জ্যাঠা, ছাপোষা বাবা, আটপৌরে মা আর বিবাহযোগ্যা দিদি এই নিয়েই কিশোর রতনের সংসার। এরমধ্যেই একদিন রেশন আনতে গিয়ে শিবানী ওরফে শিবির সাথে পরিচয়। শিবি একইসাথে ঝগড়াটে, ঠোঁটকাটা, গেঁয়ো, সেনসেটিভ, বদমেজাজী... সবচেয়ে বড় কথা সে একজন রহস্যময়ী, আনপ্রেডিক্টেবল মেয়ে। মাত্র ১০১ পৃষ্ঠার বই আরেকটু বড় হলে মন্দ লাগতো না। বিশেষ করে ফিনিশিংটা হঠাৎ করেই হয়ে গেলো যেন। তবে একবসায় পড়তে মন্দ লাগে না।

মতি নন্দী যদিও স্পোর্টস ফিকশনের জন্য খ্যাতি পেয়েছেন, কিন্তু, সেগুলোর বাইরেও তার যা লেখা সেইসব অত্যন্ত সুপাঠ্য। দক্ষ হাতে লেখা। শিবিও তেমন এক উপন্যাস।

রচনা শৈলী উপন্যাসটাকে অসাধারন করে তুলেছে। দারুণ ভাবে বয়ে চলেছে, যেন কোন নদী। সাধারন একটা গল্প লেখকের হাতে পরে অসাধারন হয়ে উঠেছে। তবে উপন্যাসের নাম চরিত্র শিবির মনস্তত্ত্ব অবশ্য বুঝতে পারিনি।

মতিবাবুর লেখা আমার অতি প্রিয় একটি বই 'শিবা'। শিবি নাম শুনে শিবার কথা মনে পরে গেলেও পড়তে গিয়ে বুঝলাম এটির সাথে শিবার কোনো সম্পর্ক নেই।
সচরাচর মতি বাবুর লেখায় একটি 'underdog' থাকে যার লড়াই ও উত্থান গল্পের মূলবস্তু হিসেবে কাজ করে। এখানে শিবি মূল চরিত্র না হয়েও মূল। কয়েকটি গরিব ঘরের স্ট্রাগল ও একটি স্কুলের ছেলের আস্তে আস্তে পরিণত মানুষ হয়ে ওঠার গল্প বেশ মন টানে। রুটিনে বাঁধা প্রতিদিনের বাঁধ ভাঙ্গা একটি চরিত্র শিবি। মেয়ে হয়েও টমবয়, গরিব হয়েও উচ্চাকাঙ্ক্ষী। অসাধারণ একটি চরিত্র যে নিজের উত্থানের আশা না করে অন্যকে উপরে উঠতে শেখায়।
কিন্তু গল্পের শেষ এতটাই অদ্ভুত যে পড়লে মনে হয় শেষ দশ পাতা হয় লেখককে জোর করে লিখতে বাধ্য করা হয়েছিল অথবা অন্য কেউ লিখে শেষ করেছিল।
বইয়ের শেষকে সম্পূর্ণ অগ্রাহ্য করে নিজের মতো ভেবে নিয়েই খুশি হয়েছি। এছাড়া এমন লেখকের শৈলী ও ক্ষমতা সম্পর্কে মন্তব্য করার অধিকার আমার নেই।

Simple lucid story.
Story of a boy from middle-class and his love for a stubborn, mysterious yet dynamic girl, Shibi.

Unassumed assumptions, urges of adolescence, love, and hate, abasement and placation, a sudden-offbeat wedding, a quick-clumsy settlement, struggles and quarrels, separation and the daily life and agreement we come to have with our wrestle with life : the author punches a tight-knit story of 100 pages in beautiful contemporary and illustrative prose.

Each character has a special footprint and can be recognized individually. They come out from daily lives of middle-men like us.
