“Shouldn’t Have Come” merges the monsters of the Four Horsemen mythology with the paranormal romance and horror of "Her Soul to Take" and is a perfect gift for fans of Harley Laroux or HD Carlton or Laura Thalassa. The harbingers are hot, deadly, and queer, the heroine won’t choose, and everybody wins at the end….well, mostly. It is a paranormal dark monster romance with fantasy elements set in a rural small town. Themes include the pending apocalypse, violence, and romantic adult situations. This book is very smutty and for adults. Please check the Reader's Advisory before reading.
All she wanted was to take her shot.
Madam Valeria Raventhorn, a void witch with talents for communing with the dead and other unsavory things, is the last of her family's legacy. Shunned for her abilities, she jumps at the opportunity the Apparition Authority offers her. It's a chance to showcase her talent to the world, a ghost hunt of a century broadcast live on TV during an eclipse.
When the summoning doesn't go as planned, the apocalypse is unleashed and the four horsemen want one thing…for Valeria to succumb. Time is of the essence as the solar eclipse peaks and a decision must be made. Will Valeria submit to the monsters or sacrifice herself to stop them?
"Shouldn’t Have Come" is a dark romance featuring various monsters as the four horsemen.
Sloane Sabel is the pen name of a neurodivergent, queer, writer and witch of the woods. Drawing from her love of horror, she crafts morally ambiguous tales with high stakes and hot monsters. After all, there’s nothing quite like a harbinger of the apocalypse on their knees.
Depraved to the point that it’s baffling, poorly edited, and a confusing plot made this book almost unreadable. The spicy scenes are plentiful and yet fail to titillate, and the FMC’s insta-lust is embarrassing in situations no human being would find erotic. The MMCs’ personalities are alluded to but never really come across on the page, and the “four horsemen [of the apocalypse]” aspect is oft mentioned but no apocalypse actually occurs.
"Neither one of us asked for this, did we witch? Yet here we are, and if I'm honest, which I rarely am, I think we're better for it."
What is a witch to do when four dark monsters crash her seance? 😅😊
I came upon the details of this book on Booktok and I'm so thankful I did. I didn't realize this was a debut novel for this author until I had finished it. I also had never read a Paranormal horror romance before, so I guess the author and I have something in common.
🩶 Vengeful Heroine 🩶 Enemies to Murderers, I mean Lovers 🤭 🩶 Why Choose 🩶 Forced Proximity 🩶 Forbidden Dark Monster Romance 🩶 A little sweet and a whole lotta heat ❤️🔥 🩶 Monster Alphaholes
Shunned for her abilities as a witch, Valeria hurtles into the opportunity to film during an eclipse with the four members of the Apparition Authority via a live broadcast ghost hunt. Unbeknownst to Valeria, the Apparition members are sneaky sneaks and the summoning doesn't go to plan......... and the four horsemen are released. There is a sacrifice to be made, but who will be strong enough to survive!
Buckle up because you're in for a wild ride. It's incredibly well written for a debut author. Spooky, mysterious, violent, romantic with a "touch" of horror, thrilling and quite addictive. Be warned though, please read the trigger warnings because this book will have you clutching your pearls 🤭👻💀🖤🥀🥵🔥❤️🔥🫶
First of all Valeria reminds us to watch who we keep close as friends😩😄the way she kept getting almost unalived because of the group she had with her kept making me as a reader want to grab them and do my own justice😄😭the spice was spicy in this book!! So if you're looking for a book that has lots of twists and steam and action please read this one!

Great for the smut. There could have been so much more that happened in the book though. Like, I would have loved to see them move and grow together. Idk, it was okay.
I was confused. I don’t know where the story’s going. This could’ve been better. Insta-lust There are multiple spice scenes but it didn’t make me feel something.
This was really a good read! Love all the witching the apocalyptic kind of read. Love the characters especially the four horsemen! It captured me through the whole story. Wishing there will be more to come.
Now this was a why choose monster romance set in a scary movie haunted house setting. Lots of gore, lots of smut, yet strangely fascinating as well with its “we’ve triggered the apocalypse and the bad guys aren’t what it seems” vibes.
I want to start out by saying this book could have been amazing.
First of all, referring to all the characters as they is 100 percent confusing and makes it hard to follow along. It also makes it difficult to know which characters are who during events.
I realize that they, them, their are acronyms. But not for every single character.
I also hate that it was just at first sight. It was ick. Make them hate each other. Then, work up to the lusting.
The plot was not solid. Every order was said multiple times in the same paragraph. As well as Gaslighting themselves. It was insane and frustrating. Like answer the question instead of barking orders or asking why.
After all, horsemen were summoned, and "they" left for her home. It was pretty much a 🍆💦 fest. Which was a waste.
“Come for the mystery, stay for the steam. And by steam, I mean holy hell 🔥”
⭐⭐⭐⭐
Sloane Sabel… what exactly was in your pen when you wrote this? Because I was not prepared 😮💨 From the moment she steps foot in that creepy cabin, I knew I was in for a ride—and whew, was it deliciously chaotic. 🌲😈
The suspense had my heart racing, but the spicy scenes? Let’s just say I had to pause, blink, and fan myself like a Victorian lady. 🫠💅 The chemistry was off the charts, the tension was criminal, and the way it all built up? Pure gold.
And can we talk about the queer rep?? Subtle, real, and so appreciated. It made the world feel more authentic, and I love when authors make space for everyone. 🏳️🌈✨
This book gave danger, drama, and downright dirty in all the best ways. I ate it up and already want seconds. More please, Sloane. Like… now. 👏🔥💋
This one took me little bit to get into it but so worth it. Four horse men it dark and spicy. Magic and mystery to it. Let your monsters out to play your won't be disappointed. I do hope she write more to this story the ending is ok but I still want more.
I wasn’t sure if I’d like this when I learned of a horror aspect. I kept reading though, I love a good story unraveling a mystery. I read through this so quickly, I wanted to know what happened at every page turn.
I love Why Choose and the spicy parts?? Magical. I’m new to dark romance but enjoyed this book more than I thought I would. I’d definitely recommend to other dark romance lovers.
This book asks the question - what if instead of stopping the 4 horsemen from starting the apocalypse, you just had sex with all of them?
This is a smut book. If that’s what you’re looking for, then congrats - you found it. If you’re looking for a serious plot, you should look elsewhere. 😂
🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️/5 All the holes with up to 5 people at a time. Some of this I don’t think would actually work geometrically, but I’ve never tried, so what do I know.
“Shouldn’t Have Come” by Sloan Sabel is a thrilling debut novel that seamlessly blends paranormal romance with an irresistible touch of danger. It takes place during a solar eclipse, like ours recently, the story follows a witch in her 30s who unwittingly summons the four horsemen in a seance gone wrong. This is a tale of unexpected fated mates entangled in a steamy and electrifying romance that will leave you breathless. The chemistry between the characters leaps off the page, drawing readers into a world where magic and desire collide in the most intoxicating way. I truly enjoyed this novel and would say it is a must-read for fans of paranormal romance.

DNF This was different from what I thought. Perhaps my fault as I pegged it for a dark romance rather than a horror romance. The MC has no redeeming characteristics and not having much build-up before the "ceremony" doesn't allow the reader to feel for any characters. So when the chaos begins, the reader doesn't really know who to cheer on. The spicy moments happening alongside the gore when the main MC is one moment fearing for life then suddenly hit with desire was just coming off as off=putting. I had no idea what was going on other than a botched ceremony opens some sort of wormhole and allows homicidal monsters through it who want to kill/mate the MC. Not my cup of tea.
