It is no secret that I love the Lady Camille Divine series. The author always writes a great mystery.
This book is a little different. Lady Camille must travel to Edinburgh when she finds out there is a house there that has been in the Divine family for a long time. Upon arrival, it doesn't take Camille long to realize there is something not quite right there. Then there is a murder in the house, and the race to solve the crime is on.
This book is not just a murder mystery. Camille learns more about her late husband and his affairs, and it is quite the tangled web. We get a better look into the mindset of Lady Divine and how she attacks these problems. I was struck by how her character dealt with finding out more about her faithless husband. Lady Divine manages to navigate the expected societal norms and customs of the time but displays a lot of compassion, even to some individuals who have wronged her. As a reader, I admired her ability to always try to do the right thing.
Richard is not present for this mystery, as he is working a case in London. Friends Cecily and Elsie are along for the ride and provide the back-up Lady Camille needs at all the right times. I really enjoyed this one.
I didn't put this down until I had finished it. Luckily I am retired and can read until almost 05:30 in the morning if I wish, which I did. The murders were intriguing and not easy to solve and finally, finally the world's most annoying women has moved out of Markham's apartment; hopefully for good. Is he selfish in wanting her in his life and wanting Kate Burton as well, of course he is, but Olivia wants it all her own way. It was totally acceptable for her to walk out and have a relationship with someone else, but she really doesn't like Gil having feelings for anyone else even though there hasn't up to now, been anything between him and Kate. He has never given Olivia any reason to think anything was going on, but she couldn't cope with Kate being around; becoming more acerbic and nasty about her as time went on. Even if nothing happens between Gil and Kate I just hope Olivia is out of the picture for good.
The 10th book in the series, and I am still delighted with these characters and stories. Those where we see less of Richard could be problematic for me, but Camille, Elsie, Celeste, and Nolly carry the story with their intelligence, warmth, and wit. Thank you, Andrea Hicks, for keeping the guys in play, even when it's from the sidelines, and giving me plenty to look forward to. There is a lot in play and at stake for Camille, and possibly Otterlie, in this outing. Is there no end to Harry Divine's debauchery and the havoc he wreaks on Camille, even from the grave? Nonetheless, Camille and her team will get through it, one way or another. This is another great adventure in the series, and I eagerly await the next audiobook release.
Ink Arnadine does her usual excellent job voicing these characters.
I’ve enjoyed all the Camille Devine books, and this is a wonderful addition to the lot.
To my mind, Camilla and Elsie seem more mature in this work - but of course there have been 10 books so far and plenty of adventures to experience and from which to learn.
I was glad to see that the series will continue after this, and with the changes possible that are laid out in this book, the next volume will be quite interesting.
Very dastardly murders. Helen Crowther does a reasonable job investigating them and gets better acquainted with Billy from the morgue. The colorful dialects made for slow reading at times. In the end, I didn’t like the way the murders were resolved. Good decent people assisting in the murders of religious fanatics? Abused children plotting revenge but almost all of them showing signs of mental illness? Good and decent people willing to let the villains just leave town (and presumably start up again?) to avoid reporting the murderers to the crooked police. Not a satisfying ending for me.

I've read all of the Camille Devine stories. There's a common thread in all. A weak main character. She's supposed to be the lead, taking the plot forward. Instead, she stumbles around causing more confusion. In one scene, Camille is attacked with a knife. Instead of running, fighting back, defending herself, she closes her eyes and waits to be murdered.
Camille gets yer another surprise when her solicitor informs her that she has inherited a mansion in Edinburgh. She sets off to see about it only to land in a dysfunctional mess her late husband had left. Add in two murders, her husbands mistress and a bastard son and it’s a mess of strings that test Camille’s will before they finally untangle. It is a tense adventure from beginning to end.
I love the Lady Divine books. The storytelling is excellent and the characters lovable. This is a perfect read for my ME-time! There is only one thing that gets on my nerves, really: The editing of the e-books is SO BAD! In the Edinburgh Murders they even changed a name of the characters. I hope one day this can be fixed! at this time and age, with AI and everything, this should not happen. But I will go on reading the books anyway!!! Looking forward to the next one!
Sadly, I am done with this author. She has simply run out of story lines and now just wants to discuss all forms of sexual fantasies. Every other page was, about some form of sex or abuse. Who wants to read a historical fiction book about her issues!! She should have stopped with the last book. Didn't continue reading!!
And the gifts keep coming. When Camille is notified by her late husband's attorney that she owns a house in Edinburgh, she goes to see it. She and Elsie walk into a party down in the kitchen. That is the beginning. It seems Lord Devine had an early version of the Playboy mansion. Read the book for more.
Last time I checked, illegitimate children did not inherit. Here, there was no mention of a father acknowledging a child out of wedlock. It was assumed the son was the heir.
Again, a totally wonderful murder mystery and which I was totally engrossed from page one to the very last page. Cannot again the Cairo mystery. Thank you again for entertaining me with such pleasure and mystery. Bunny
I am so glad Camilla has got such good friends to help her through the crazy world of aristocrats, Though it really isn't much different than now. I love her support an friends. Can't wait for more adventures.
Fast paced, not easily solved. References to fun spots in Edinburgh. Great descriptions of interpersonal relationships. Encourage those interested in this genre to read it.
I love stories set in England! But I have so enjoyed traveling with Lady Divine and Cecily! I do really enjoy books of a series! Can't wait for more stories and more places! Every one is so exciting and suspenseful. Love Andrea Hicks writing! Thank you
While I love the series, this one seemed off to me, I enjoyed the plot but at times found it went off the rails a bit, the chapters seemed to drag on and the ending seemed to just stop abruptly for me with so many unanswered questions, since Miss Lemmons wasn’t who she was did they find this out during the arrest, what about the journal she found, does she read it, it just was a odd ending to me.
