Romans: (A Transformative Bible Commentary for Spirit-filled Christians)

Rate this book
The Spirit who inspired the authors of the New Testament is at work today around the globe, as evidenced by the explosive growth of Pentecostal, charismatic, and renewalist movements; the number of adherents is now estimated at more than half a billion. There is a clear need for a balanced, affordable, and accessible commentary series aimed at Christians who identify as Spirit-filled. The Word and Spirit Commentary on the New Testament series emphasizes how we listen alongside ancient audiences for the Spirit's voice in our time and contexts. Commentaries are written by pastorally sensitive biblical scholars from the Spirit-filled tradition. Series editors are Holly Beers, Westmont College, and Craig S. Keener, Asbury Theological Seminary. In Romans, pastor, scholar, and speaker Sam Storms demonstrates the inseparable bond between Word and Spirit, awakening the Pentecostal-charismatic world to the functional authority of the Bible and the evangelical world to the presence and power of the Holy Spirit. Images, illustrations, and sidebars on Pentecostal/charismatic/revival history or insights are included.

The Word and Spirit Commentary on Romans by Sam Storms is an excellent and insightful contribution to the study of the book of Romans from a Pentecostal-Charismatic perspective.

What sets this commentary apart are the specific sections of Pentecostal interest. Storms covers the charismatic gifts, the spiritual forces in relation to our sin, seeing the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament, and more. As I am preaching through Romans, this commentary has helped me clearly see the depth of Paul’s Spirit-filled and Spirit-centered life and ministry.

Seeing the Spirit in Scripture

I was most helped while preaching from Romans 12:3–8, especially in understanding the view on the gift of prophecy. It is speaking forth, in human words, something that the Holy Spirit has spontaneously revealed or brought to mind. It is comprehensible, inspired (spontaneously and unexpectedly), specific (in the context of the congregation), revelatory (a sign of God’s presence), and corporately affirmed.

While I identify as a Reformed Baptist, Storms is persuasive. Storms’ commentary is well-written and encouraging. I’ve gained a greater appreciation for the work of the Holy Spirit in Paul’s theology and in the life of the church today. This book has given me a deeper hunger for the Spirit’s presence and gifts, and a renewed desire to see them operating biblically and powerfully in the local church.

I received a media copy of Romans Word and Spirit Commentary and this is my honest review.
