Whitney Garrett is preparing to enter culinary school in the spring, but first she has to sell enough homemade pies at the local Christmas markets to pay her tuition. When her oven breaks, Whitney asks Marie Sloan, proprietor of the Red Door Inn, if she can use the inn's kitchen to keep up with her orders. Marie agrees, with a Whitney has to watch the three Sloan children and cook breakfasts for the Red Door in return.
The inn is busy with holiday guests--including Aretha Franklin Sloan's perpetually single nephew Daniel and Ruby, a businesswoman in town to purchase Aretha's antiques store. Intent on making a Christmas match for the two, Aretha enlists Whitney's help in her schemes. But the deeper Whitney gets, the more she realizes that Ruby is definitely not the right woman for Daniel--and the more she thinks that she just might be his perfect match.
Cuddle up for some warm holiday cheer as New York Times bestselling author Liz Johnson explores the unforeseen consequences of meddling with mistletoe when love is on the line.
There are just a few weeks before Christmas and a great time to take a trip back to Prince Edward Island and the Red Door Inn. The decorations are going up. Whitney Garrett is saving up for culinary school and helping out at the inn as she needs the use of the inn kitchen to make pies to sell at local markets. In exchange, she is watching Marie and Seth's kids and cooking breakfast for a couple of guests. The guests are there to help Aretha, owner of a local antique store, get said store ready to sell. Her nephew Daniel and Ruby, a company rep for the buyer are the guests. Aretha wants Daniel to be happy and, in her mind, Ruby is the answer. And she wants Whitney to help her make it happen. But sometimes love has a different idea. This is a fun, sweet romance set during the most wonderful time of the year with a Christmas pageant, snow, cold weather, and walking around the town looking at Christmas lights and nativities. Wonderful characters and sweet romance with a touch of faith make this a great holiday read. I received a copy for the purpose of an honest review. These are my thoughts.
A Cute Christmas romance by Liz Johnson. The Author is new to me and I loved the book. The story takes place in Prince Edward Island Canada. Though I was born in Canada and lived there for 21 years I have never been to PEI. It sounds like a lovely place to put on my bucket list. The winters are cold and since this is a Christmas story there’s snow and freezing temperatures. The story is filled with the Christmas Spirit, decorations and lots of delicious pies. I loved most of the characters but admit that at times I wasn’t fond of Aunt Aretha. She considered herself to be a successful matchmaker but she meddled into her nephew’s life and I found her to be irritating at times. At least she had good intentions and loved her nephew. In the end all things worked out for the best and the story was very entertaining and drew me in completely. I’m pleased to have found a new Author and I look forward to reading more books by her. I recommend this book to readers of Christmas novels, Christian Fiction, women’s Fiction and Contemporary Romance. This book is part of a series but I read it as a standalone and enjoyed it to the fullest. This book is scheduled to be released on 9/3/24. I voluntarily read an advanced readers copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions expressed here in this review are entirely my own.
To pay her tuition for culinary school, Whitney Garrett decides to sell homemade pies at the market. When her stove breaks down, she heads to the Red Door Inn to see if she can use their kitchen. A deal is struck and Whitney finds herself caring for the three Sloan children and taking on a temporary chef position in return for the use of the inn’s kitchen.
All seems to be working well until the meddlesome antiques dealer’s single son arrives in town. Aretha thinks Daniel’s love life could do with some help and she enlists the aid of the temporary chef to work magic with one of the inn’s guests, Rubie Lavoie. The thing is, Whitney doesn’t think they’re a good match. She has a plan of her own!
Just when I thought this was an easy beach read, the author got my attention and raised some fantastic probing questions. I loved her examination of choosing a career path, the dangers of judging others and ‘settling for’ instead of ‘aiming for’, and the necessity of seeing ourselves through the eyes of another. Suddenly, this book seemed as if it was written for me! I loved the message about meddling with the mistletoe as much as I loved the front-row seat to Whitney’s transformation.
I was gifted this copy by Revell and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.
Well, this was adorable and put me in the Christmas mood! What a fun surprise! I may just have to read some more Christmas books early this year! Whitney is working to enter culinary school in the spring, but first she needs to sell enough pies at the local Christmas markets to pay her tuition. Her oven has other plans though and breaks down, so she asks Marie Sloan, proprietor of the Red Door Inn, to use the inn's kitchen to keep up with her orders. She agrees and we see so many cute moments of Whitney watching the three Sloan children and cook breakfast for the guests in return. The inn has many guests--including Aretha Sloan, our main guy's Aunt. She is in the business of matchmaking her nephew Daniel with Ruby, a businesswoman who is a bit too serious for Daniel. Aretha is determined to match up Daniel with Ruby so she makes Whitney an offer she can't refuse to help her with the matchmaking scheme.....little does Whitney know....her heart has some unexpected plans for Daniel herself... ❤️
The ending pushed this to a 4 star for me. I really liked the romance that developed between Daniel and Whitney. I am not always a matchmaking book girly, but this had some great cozy Christmas vibes that made it just fine. ❤️ The kiddos really stood out for me too, I loved their characters here. They really remind you of the innocence and sweetness of children, especially at Christmastime.
Honestly, the matchmaking made me laugh because it was so obvious Ruby and Daniel did not go together, even other characters noticed it, so it was more of a light play on matchmaking that was funny. Daniel had been through heartbreak before so he was not quick to give his heart away but the connection between him and Whitney was very clear to him.
There was some nice faith moments with Daniel and God too---he realizes God has not left him all from the sweet words of young Julia Mae. Loved that moment.
If you like matchmaking stories, small towns, cute Christmas inns and markets, plus sweet faith moments in books - give this cute Christmas romance a try this holiday season. (This also made me really want to read the Prince Edward Island Dreams series now!)
Thank you to the publisher for a copy to honestly read and review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I received a free copy of, Meddling with Mistletoe, by Liz Johnson, from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Whitney Garrett's stove breaks down, and she is all set to go to culinary school, what to do? Whitney and an innkeeper decide to swap services, babysitting for use of the kitchen. This was a pleasurable read, the characters seemed very real.
Meddling with Mistletoe is my new favorite Christmas contemporary romance. It’s sugar, and apple spice, and everything nice. I never get tired of matchmaker stories, and this one is no exception. I hope Liz continues to write Christmas stories because this is my favorite of her books yet!
Meddling with Mistletoe is a sweet Christmas romcom story featuring a quirky but talented baker and a serious accountant. When Whitney agrees to work at the local inn’s kitchen for the season, she definitely wasn’t expecting to fall in love. But when Daniel’s aunt convinces Whitney to help him fall in love with someone else, Whitney has to decide how she really feels.
This had so many charming Christmas elements and such a cozy vibe!
If you’re looking for a Christmas read that’s more than just tinsel and mistletoe, this one’s for you. It’s got heart, it’s got faith, and it’s got a sweet romance that feels exactly right for the season. I’d definitely recommend Meddling with Mistletoe to anyone who enjoys holiday stories with a strong dose of faith and some delightful matchmaking mischief on the side. It’s a delightful read that leaves you feeling both warm inside and uplifted.
Returning to The Red Door Inn felt like coming home. The characters are just as charming and real as ever. Whitney, with her pie-baking ambitions, is a character you can’t help but root for. And Daniel, well, let’s just say he’s a guy who’s been a bit lost, but the way he’s portrayed is really touching. There’s a moment where he’s reminded that God’s love hasn’t left him, and that part really hit home for me. It’s such a simple truth, but it’s one we all need to remember.
Now, the meddling part of the story is fun—Aunt Aretha is a classic matchmaker, and her schemes to pair Daniel with Ruby had me laughing out loud. But here’s the thing: as Whitney gets roped into these plans, she starts to see that maybe, just maybe, she’s the one who’s meant for Daniel. And that’s where things get interesting.
What I really loved about this book is how it blends holiday cheer with meaningful reflections on faith. There’s a line from the author’s acknowledgments that stuck with me: “Obstacles are part of the journey. And it’s worth fighting to overcome them. Keep trying. God is faithful.” That’s the kind of encouragement we all need, especially when life throws us curveballs.
Meddling with Mistletoe by Liz Johnson is one of those books that wraps you up in a cozy Christmas setting but also nudges you to think a little deeper about life and faith. I just finished it, and I have to say, I’m so thankful I had the opportunity to dive into this compelling read.
I received an eARC copy of Meddling with Mistletoe from the publisher, Revell, and NetGalley. Additionally, I preordered the ebook. I am not required to write a positive review in any way or for any reason. My honest and unbiased opinions expressed in this book review are my own. My review focuses on the writing style, the pacing, and the story’s content, ensuring transparency and reliability.
Was this book a cheesy matchmaking gone wrong Christmas romance? Yes. Was it cliche? Also yes. But did I love it? Also yes! It’s your typical hallmark Christmas love story doesn’t try to be anything else and it was such a fun, lighthearted read. I don’t have much time for reading these days but I was so invested, I read this in one sitting.
In "Meddling with Mistletoe," Liz Johnson combines a matchmaking aunt, small town vibes on Prince Edward Island, cute kiddos, the sensory allure of baked goods, tender faith moments, and a grumpy / sunshine pairing into a festive novella sure to make the season bright for readers of contemporary romance.
If you're in the mood to savor a sweet read, find out who's "Meddling with Mistletoe" this Christmas!
4.5 ⭐️s—Whitney Garrett finally has a plan. Hoping to prove to her parents she can stick with something, she’s decided to go to culinary school—if she can sell enough of her homemade pies to pay her tuition balance. So when her seasoned matchmaker neighbor Aretha makes Whitney an offer she can’t refuse in exchange for her help hooking her grumpy 30-something nephew Daniel up with a seemingly well-matched businesswoman, Whitney semi-happily agrees. But what Whitney doesn’t plan for is falling for the grump herself.
Y’all, this was one of the cutest Christmas books! All the characters were lovable and endearing. And I loved Whitney and Daniel together. He was such a rock for her and saw her in a light that helped her to see herself differently. And she helped him rediscover joy and know that he was capable of more than he thought.
If you enjoy opposites attract, forced proximity, found family, and cozy clean reads with tons of Christmas cheer, add this one to holiday TBR!
Thanks so much to @revellfiction for the gifted copy to read and review! All opinions are my own.
My goodness what a fun and cozy read! I absolutely love PEI so when I found out this book had that wonderful setting I was excited! If you haven't read the previous books by this author, specifically The Red Door Inn, I highly recommend you do! It was pure delight to go back to the inn for the holidays and I really enjoyed the new characters. Whitney is very real and probably will remind a lot of readers of themselves. Daniel is a surprising character that I just love! He is so serious and seems rather drab at the start but my goodness keep reading! Aretha is wonderful as always even if she drives you a bit crazy. Is it a bit "Hallmark" and predictable? Of course. Is it worth reading? Yes! There is humor and so much heart in this story. I thoroughly enjoyed this one.
Five Stars.
"I received this book from Revell for free. All opinions are my own and I was not required to write a positive review."
"He was going because even Eeyore spent time with his friends."
It's always a pleasure to return to Prince Edward Island, especially to the Red Door Inn. I enjoyed getting to know Daniel and Whitney. Daniel and his straight-laced, grumpy ways were completely opposite to Whitney and her melodious, often flighty ways but they complemented each other well. He believed in Whitney, gave her things to seriously think about, and supported her in her endeavors. She, in turn, brought joy, laughter, and belief in human connection to Daniel's gray world. Their friendship that turned quickly into romance was sweet and tender. I didn't love Aretha's meddling, the misconstrued love triangle, nor the awkwardness of that premise but all of this provided angst and romantic tension to propel the story forward. I did love catching up with the characters from the Prince Edward Island Dreams series and seeing how their families have expanded. I also loved how the author circled back to the true meaning of Christmas with a Christmas pageant at a small church.
It's a fun Christmas story set in Prince Edward Island. I received a complimentary copy courtesy of Revell via NetGalley and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are my own.
I loved the stories set at the Red Door Inn, so it was such a pleasure to return there for Whitney's story! She is at a crossroads in her life, feeling forced to choose a career that she can stick with, or let her parents down again, and no more safety net. I could sense how on edge she felt, working toward an end goal with things falling apart around her. Despite her circumstances, she is the sunshine providing contrast to Daniel's grumpiness. His character put off vibes of flatness and unhappiness, going through the motions, but still caring about his aunt enough to travel and help her sell her business. There are plenty of funny mishaps, but the best part of this book is the way Daniel blossomed around Whitney's light. They both gently challenged each other, and as Daniel learns to open his heart again, Whitney gains the courage to find and follow the dream authentic to her. A sweet holiday read with great romantic chemistry!

Cute Christmas novel set in an idyllic location (Red Door Inn on PEI). I loved how Whitney defrosted grumpy Daniel without even trying. The children were a sweet add to the pages.

In a charming Christmas romance set at the Red Door Inn, Whitney Garrett dreams of attending culinary school. She must sell enough pies at the local Christmas market to afford tuition. However, when her oven breaks, Whitney turns to Marie, the owner of the Red Door Inn. Marie agrees to help, but in exchange, Whitney must assist with caring for her three children and preparing breakfast for the inn's guests. cute little Christmas romance
Thank You Netgalley and Revell

Meddling With Mistletoe takes fans of Liz Johnson back to the Red Door Inn for rom-com antics, the joys of the Christmas season and all it entails, and for a story of two strangers finding friendship and a little romance in unlikely circumstances. If you’ve never visited the Red Door Inn or Prince Edward Island in Liz’s other stories, you are in for a treat discovering the steadfast and vibrant characters who make up this story world. If you’re a returning traveler, you will be joyous to revisit characters like Marie and Seth, Aretha Franklin and Jack, and a new generation of kids to like — especially precocious Julia May who steals a few scenes in this story with her funny holiday and personal observations.
The romance has the right balance of complexity, twinkling lights, friendship, and pies. Daniel is a new beta hero to add to my bespectacled book boyfriend list with so much kindness behind a sometimes-stoic exterior. My favorite thing about his romance with Whitney is how they both see each other’s integrity and heart, even in the tentative first parts of their friendship. The way Whitney excels at pastry but holds a little uncertainty about her future and dreams is smartly portrayed and encouraged — never judged — by Daniel, which makes their dynamic all the more appreciated.
My thank Revell Publishing and the Revell Reads program for the review copy. This is my honest review.
Meddling with Mistletoe returns to the Red Door Inn on Prince Edward Island. Whitney is baking pies to earn enough money for her payment to culinary school. Her oven breaks down and she makes a deal with Marie at the inn to use the oven in return for preparing breakfasts and caring for Marie's children. Daniel was brought to the island by his aunt, Aretha, to look over the accounting system to get her antiques store ready to sell and is staying at the inn.
Aretha has a matchmaking plan in mind for her nephew and asks Whitney to assist. It goes totally differently than planned and proves you can't always meddle with mistletoe!
I have enjoyed all the author's books and this was no exception. This was an adorable Christmas story with tons of humor and romance! I loved it!!
I received a complimentary ARC copy of this book and all opinions expressed are my own.
4.5 stars for this fun Christmas rom-com set in Prince Edward Island! Having not read the author's Prince Edward Island Dreams series, I was not familiar with the background characters whose stories felt a bit important. This story stood fine on its own, but I think fans of the prior series will maybe enjoy a richer experience as I felt like I'd missed some back story (and can tell by reading the descriptions of those stories that I'd have understood more if I'd read that series). This story follows Whitney, who is trying to make it to culinary school by selling pies at the Farmers market when her oven goes kaput. She strikes a bargain to use the kitchen of the Red Door Inn by offering to watch the proprietor's kids and provide breakfast to the Inn's unexpected guests. When further pressed to help those guests fall in love, she is given an offer she really can't refuse, but she doesn't count on falling for Daniel instead. I thoroughly enjoyed the cutesy elements of this story and how the children played a part in Daniel and Whitney's story. There were several laugh out loud moments. There were also some intense character growth elements that I also found poignant. I also thoroughly enjoyed how one of the little ones chose Daniel to be her person and gave him a lesson in the true meaning of Christmas. The romance moved way too quickly for my liking, but when doing a holiday romance, it has to move quickly in order to fulfill the story's timeline, so I get it..... but that's my only complaint. All in all, this was an enjoyable story and fans of holiday rom-coms are sure to enjoy this story, especially if they have read other works by this author.
Whitney is at a crossroads in her life. Her parents have moved away from Prince Edward Island and will no longer serve as her safety net. Whitney has lots of big ideas but no DREAM so she flits from one idea to the next. Without her parents help she has to figure out her next steps and she doesn't want to disappoint them. She is determined to save up the money for culinary school and she needs to sell some pies to raise the remaining funds but she still might be short and to make matters worse her oven has stopped working. She asks her friend at the Red Door Inn if she can use her oven over the holidays, her friend agrees on the condition that she make breakfast for the Inn's two guests each day and that she help babysit her children. Whitney readily agrees. She doesn't realize how one guest in particular will start to change her outlook on life and on the future. But to fall for him means to go back on some promises she made. Meddling with Mistletoe is about second chances and following your heart. I wanted it to like it more but it was a little slow and the characters could have been a little more developed. It was a quick holiday read though. Very clean with some light kissing.
Meddling With Mistletoe was a really cute Christmas story! I liked the characters and getting another story from Prince Edward Island.
I felt for the main character and how she got pulled into matchmaking, even though she didn't truly feel right about doing it. The romance was cute and I liked how it developed naturally.
All in all, Meddling with Mistletoe was a great read and I recommend it if you are looking for a fun read this Christmas season. Hoping for more books with these characters someday!

This story was such a treat! Coming back to the Red Door Inn and catching up with the friends I've made there is always a treat and to have it set at Christmas just made it all the more special.
I love how Liz Johnson writes characters that tug at your heart. Not only the hero and heroine but every character who steps into the page. Little Julia Mae was utterly adorable!
I also really loved (of course!) the journey Whitney took to finding her dream. It was unusual but deep and so sweet and thought-provoking.
Already looking forward to reading this one again. I think it'll become a holiday staple!
This was a sweet, Hallmark Holiday style movie set on small town PEI that features a baker struggling to figure out what she wants to do with her life and an accountant who has unwanted matchmaking schemes from his family when all he wants to do is spend more time with the cute baker working at the inn. A charming little Christmas story that won't be super memorable for me but was an enjoyable way to pass an afternoon.
I'll never get over how much I love Liz Johnson's stories! Her characters, writing style, the setting, all of it just suits me perfectly! 🥰
I loved Daniel so much! He's precious and adorable and I loved every bit of him and especially how he was with Whitney! 🥰 and I loved Whitney and her character and how I related to her so much! I loved the two of them together and all of their cute, precious, encouraging, loving, sweetness! 💕 and I loved getting to see more of my favorite characters from the Red Door Inn! 🥰
I've been excited for Fall, but this makes me want to skip right to Christmas! 😂 I love how Liz writes so that I always feel like I'm right there with the characters! And it was even cooler and more magical this time because I actually DID walk where these characters walked this summer and it was the coolest thing reading it and remembering being there! 🥰🥰🥰🥰
Well done Liz! Can't wait to see what you have next! 💕
