Rate this book
In the heart of ancient Persia, the empire's Jewish citizens face an ominous edict that threatens their very existence. Roxannah, the daughter of a once-privileged but now impoverished Persian lord, is devastated by the news. Her father sees this edict as a stroke of good fortune, an opportunity to settle his mounting debts by killing the Jewish physician, Adin, and seizing his belongings, but instead he meets his own untimely end, leaving Roxannah destitute and adrift. Desperate and determined to support her mother while settling the debt, Roxannah approaches Adin--the man whose kind eyes still haunt her--to help her find employment in Queen Esther's kitchens.

In the opulent palace of Susa, Roxannah strives to overcome prejudice and adversity as she ascends through the ranks in the royal kitchen. Her culinary talent earns her the trust and mentorship of Queen Esther herself, a woman of grace and wisdom, who is navigating treacherous palace politics and whispers of her inability to produce an heir after six years of marriage. Amid this unfolding connection, Roxannah and Adin uncover a sinister plot against Amestris, the king's most powerful wife and Esther's archenemy. As secrets unravel and alliances are tested, the fate of Amestris and Esther's reign hang in the balance.

For where you go I will go, and where you lodge I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God my God. ~ Ruth 1:6

Why am I including a verse from the book of Ruth in my Esther review? See below for five amazing things about this new read from Tessa Afshar:

👑Each chapter begins with a scripture verse that frames and overshadows the plot ahead.

👑The frequent entries "From the Secret Scrolls of Esther" give us her firsthand thoughts (based on Scripture and historical texts).

👑God's providence, lovingkindness, and faithfulness to His people shine through in every chapter. The story of Ruth is relevant to the folks in this book and they cherish her godly example.

👑Filled with delicious food, royal intrigue, and gorgeous robes. The cover is a perfect representation of the book inside. What's not to like?

👑This is the first of a series of three books. Can't wait to read the second book with the spotlight on a potter.

Thank you to Bethany House and NetGalley for a DRC in exchange for an honest review.

Allow Tessa Afshar to transport you to the Persian Empire and immerse you in the intriguing life of ancient palace life - the opulent kitchens of Queen Esther.

✨Three reasons why Christian historical fiction readers will want to read this book:

Firstly, you’ll be inspired to take inventory. I welcomed the opportunity to investigate my heart and see if there was anything that prevented faith from settling, taking root and growing. In this book, you’ll read about someone who could have allowed doubt and fear of the political climate to reign in her heart but instead chose to feed faith. We need this message more this week than ever before.

Secondly, you’ll be encouraged in your struggle. It was good for me to be reminded that I'm not the only one with an ‘uphill walk’ at the moment and that my circumstances don’t need to dictate my attitude. You’ll read about someone who had a difficult home life and was afraid of what the new edict meant for her Jewish friends. Even when she relocated to the palace in Susa, she faced difficult circumstances. Her grace in adversity allowed her to flourish because she anchored her soul to something bigger than her circumstances. Her patience when her faith was but a seedling allowed God time to turn “the threads of her failure into a precious moment of redemption.”

Lastly, you’ll feel encouraged in your spiritual walk. I appreciated reading about those who doubted but continued to be a good ambassador for God. Esther was in the place God needed her to be, and her continual stepping out in faith despite the customs of her empire inspired me. She learned that “God’s provision undergirds the times and places” of her life and that gave her peace in the valleys of her life.

“Sometimes the doors that open before us are not the ones we long for.”
“Some blessings can only be born of disappointments.”

This book had me reaching for three things:
✔Google to understand the Achaemenid dynasty a little more
✔my bible to reread Esther’s account,
✔and a recipe book to see if I had a recipe for Persian pistachio cake.

I won’t forget this book any time soon as I connected with Roxannah in more than one way. She learned how to reevaluate the indicators of success, how to fill the gaps in meaningful ways, and how to move on when she had outgrown one of life’s seasons.

You’ll want to put this series, Queen Esther’s Court, on your radar. Afshar has planned a trilogy; each book focussing on one of Queen Esther’s friends. Afshar promises to highlight unique professions and show us how Esther changes each friend's life.

I was gifted this copy by Bethany House and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.

4.25 out of 5 stars!

Her ability to blend fiction with history, particularly her meticulous attention to biblical detail, captivates me. I found myself completely immersed, finishing the audiobook in a single day. The story itself was extraordinary—rich in historical depth, filled with a compelling plot, and brimming with moving inspiration.

The first time I read a book by this author was around a year ago, I remember enjoying it. I'm looking forward listening to this story as well!

This was my first biblical historical fiction read, and it was so much fun! Basically it revolves around Esther’s story but with two different main characters and a subplot of romance. Would recommend!

Afshar’s writing shines in this brilliant perspective shift on Queen Esther’s story. When Roxanna’s first love must do the unthinkable, she achieves the unattainable, and the Hebrew God accomplishes the impossible. Tessa Afshar’s knowledge of detailed Persian recipes provides a tantalizing backdrop for this powerful debut to her Queen Esther’s Court series.

I love all those mouth-watering recipes (like only Tessa could describe them because of her Persian heritage) and the way she weaves together her ancient characters’ lives in a way that mirrors the complexity of our modern existence. They face the same family issues, financial burdens, emotional yearnings, and hopes for success that we feel today. The emotions we feel have been the same since Genesis 3, when Eve took her first bite of that forbidden fruit. Biblical characters felt the same joys and sorrows we do, and no one shows that better than Tessa Afshar.

Afshar pens her best stories when writing the biblical tales set in the land of her birth. The Hidden Prince and The Peasant King were my favorite of her books until now, but The Queen’s Cook rivals them! I can’t find a thing to wish she’d done differently. Definitely a 5-smile worthy read for me!

The Queen's Cook by Tessa Afshar - 5 Stars
BLOG POST: https://bookloveramanda.blogspot.com/...

I have said it before and I will say it again, Tessa is the master of biblical fiction! I loved this story of Roxannah, the daughter of a once-privileged but now impoverished Persian lord, working in Queen Esther's kitchens. In this story, we see her determined to support her mother and repay her father's debts - she seeks out Adin to help her find work. Adin sees the need and secures her a position in the royal kitchens of Queen Esther.

Guided by Esther's grace and wisdom, she finds herself navigating prejudice and palace politics and deepening her bond with Adin along the way. As Roxanna goes up in the kitchen ranks, she and Adin uncover a plot targeting Amestris, the king's most powerful wife and Queen's archenemy. This sets things in motion from here in the plot.

This book has a rich historical setting of ancient Persia - very vibrant and immersive. Also, the culinary details in this were - chef's kiss! I loved all the food and cooking details.

The relationship between Adin and Roxannah was very well developed. I personally loved seeing them on their journey of working together and developing that slow burn romance along the way. Adin was also a great guy inspiring Roxannah's faith journey to trust God.

Roxannah and Esther's friendship was beautiful to see as well. I loved the glimpses into Esther's POV.

Overall, highly recommend as another great biblical fiction by Tessa! Thank you to Bethany House and NetGalley for a copy to honestly read and review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This is a fictional story that takes a look into Queen Esther's court and particularly her cook's kitchen. Roxannah is of Persian nobility but her father fell into depression and squandered their wealth. Now she has to work to support her mom and herself after his death. Adin, a Jewish physician, finds her a job in the queen's kitchen as an assistant to an assistant. Roxannah has a talent as a chef and proves herself but it is not easy in a man's world. This is an inspirational and emotional story of survival, love, intrigue, suspense, and deceit within the king's court. For those who enjoy biblical fiction, this is highly recommended. Every book I've read by Tessa Afshar has been amazing, but this one might just be my new favourite.

I fell in love with the story and characters instantly, rooted for the romance from the very beginning, enjoyed all the mouth-watering dishes and palace intrigue, and of course, the biblical themes woven throughout.

I liked the idea of seeing Esther's story through the eyes of her servants, but we also got to hear from the Queen herself, as a little interlude between certain chapters. I thought this was really creative, and a unique way of bringing this story to life.

On top, the main character is called Roxannah, which is one of my absolute favourite names, so I couldn't help but love her. Her journey was so inspiring, not just faith wise, but the way she learned to stand up for herself by the end as well.

The romance was perfectly developed, gradual, and yet you could feel their chemistry from the get go. I hope these two make a cameo or two in the future books, I haven't had enough of them.

The Queen's Cook is one of my top reads this year, I lovelovelove it so much.

From the very first words of The Queen’s Cook, Tessa Afshar immerses us in the opulence of ancient Persia, drawing us into a world filled with rich flavors, divine providence, and an unwavering call to faith. As a lover of both historical fiction and Christian faith, this story captivated me in a way that only the best novels do—by making me reflect deeply on God's presence in the midst of our most challenging circumstances.

Roxannah's journey is nothing short of transformative. At the start, she is a young woman caught between the despair of her father’s reckless decisions and the fear of impending doom hanging over her Jewish friends. Her decision to seek out Adin, the royal physician, leads her into the service of Queen Esther, where she discovers a world of culinary mastery but also a fierce spiritual journey. The kitchen becomes a sacred space in its own right—filled with the prayers and silent whispers of a heart seeking to navigate adversity with grace.

What I loved most about this book is how Afshar weaves together Roxannah’s growth with the tangible details of Persian food and the bustling palace kitchens. The food isn’t just a backdrop; it’s a metaphor for Roxannah’s spiritual and emotional nourishment. Each dish, carefully crafted in the heat of the kitchen, serves as a reflection of her transformation, from a humble servant to a woman of faith, resolve, and bravery.

Esther’s brief yet powerful appearances in the story are reminders that God uses ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things, often when the stakes are highest. Through Roxannah’s eyes, we see Esther not only as the queen on the throne but as a sister in faith—one who too has learned to trust God even when the path forward seems impossible. Afshar doesn’t manipulate Scripture but stays true to the essence of biblical truths, painting a portrait of Esther that is both relatable and inspiring. I especially cherished the way the narrative begins with Esther’s poignant words: “Being a queen will break your heart … There is a peace that comes when you lose everything. Once I wielded the power of an empire to save my people. That knowledge is my crown, the throne I sit upon when my losses haunt me. I survived the sharp edge of palace intrigue long enough to complete the hard tasks that God lay before me. And somehow, on that arduous journey, I made a handful of true friends. You might even say I changed a few lives.” It sets the tone for a story rooted in the real, hard truths of life, yet wrapped in the hope of God’s unshakeable provision.

Adin, the Jewish physician, is just as compelling. His relationship with Roxannah evolves gently, like the slow simmer of a stew over an open flame. Their bond isn’t rushed, and neither is the deepening of their faith. One of my favorite moments is when Adin says, “This is one of those moments when God alone is the answer. Our friends can accompany us through the journey, and that too is a gift. But only God can open the impossible doors like this.” It’s a reminder that in our darkest moments, only God can truly make a way where there seems to be none.

Throughout the story, Christian faith themes are rich and potent. I appreciated how the characters wrestle with their doubts, yet they continually choose to trust God’s timing and provision. Roxannah’s growth is something that resonates deeply. She begins with so many questions, fears, and insecurities, yet through God’s grace, she becomes someone who, like Esther, understands that “God’s provision undergirds the times and places of our lives.” This message is so timely—reminding us all that God’s faithfulness isn’t bound by our circumstances but is present in every moment.

I can’t help but be drawn to the authenticity of Roxannah’s faith journey. Her conversion from unbelief to belief and fear to courage, is believable and deeply inspiring. As she slowly learns to trust God, the story makes space for those “impossible doors” to open, just as they do, by God’s powerful hand, in the lives of the biblical figures we know and love.

And let me tell you, the food descriptions in this book? Absolutely mouthwatering! From Persian stews to delicate pastries, every meal feels like an invitation to taste and savor the richness of the world Afshar has created. I found myself pausing to look up recipes and even read more about the Persian kitchens. Yes, The Queen’s Cook had me reaching for my Bible, a history book, and a recipes all in one sitting!

This book is a true feast for the soul. The Queen’s Cook offers a window into a world of royal intrigue, spiritual growth, and the beautiful, sometimes messy, journey of living a life anchored in faith. Tessa Afshar has crafted another brilliant story, one that lingers long after the last page is turned. If you're a fan of historical fiction with a strong Christian message, rich characters, and a sprinkle of culinary delight, this book is an absolute must-read.

If you're ready to be transported to ancient Persia and see the world through Roxannah's eyes—watching her navigate challenges with faith and courage—then don’t miss this book. It's a reminder that God’s purpose for us is often revealed in the most unexpected places and, sometimes, even in the heart of a bustling kitchen.

I received a digital ARC via the author, publisher, and NetGalley. I am not required to write a positive review in any way or for any reason. My honest and unbiased opinions expressed in this book review are my own. My review focuses on how true it is to Scripture, the writing style, the pacing, and the content, ensuring transparency and reliability.

The Queen’s Cook completely mesmerized me from beginning to end. This beautiful forbidden romance between a handsome Jewish physician & a Persian cook all set against the backdrop of Queen Esther’s court had me devouring the pages. Full of palace intrigue, carefully woven in history, heart-achingly lovely romance, endearing characters, an inspiring faith journey, forgiveness, & delectable dishes, this story really captured my imagination & was impossible to put down.

Roxhanna’s transformational journey from impoverished Persian noblewoman to the Queen’s cook begins in her father’s house where his poor choices lead to needing a physician. From the first, Roxhanna’s drawn to Adin, the kind physician who treats her father. As their friendship grows, Roxhanna looks forward to each meeting, but when a terrible decree from the King threatens Adin & her other Jewish friends she finds herself in a difficult position of whether to betray her father & his friends who are using the edict as an opportunity to enrich themselves at the Jews’ expense, or warn Adin of their plans. Her choice leads to her family’s potential financial ruin when her father winds up dead.

Seeking to support her mother & save their home, Roxhanna accepts a position using her culinary talents in the kitchens of King Xerxes & Queen Esther. Facing opposition & jealousies, Roxhanna earns the respect of the head cook who recognizes her innate abilities & Queen Esther herself. But, when she discovers a plot against Amestris, Xerxes wife, & Esther’s chief rival, she & Adin work together to unmask the traitors.

I loved this story! Queen Esther has long been a favorite Biblical heroine & I enjoyed getting a glimpse of what her life may have been like through her secret scrolls & interactions with the main characters. Roxhanna & Adin were both such lovable characters. I enjoyed Roxhanna’s faith journey as she faces abuse, self-doubt, prejudice, & forgiveness. The romance between her & Adin was achingly lovely. Roxhanna has things she needs to work through but can’t resist the caring, thoughtful Adin. Adin’s such a charming man & has his own past he’s struggling to move on from. Though he’s reluctant to fall in love with Roxhanna, he can’t help himself as he sees her strengths, talents, & growing faith.

The palace intrigue & politics of the kitchen kept me quickly turning the pages. I loved reading about every dish Roxhanna created & wished I could jump through the pages to taste them. I enjoyed the way the author combined history & Queen Esther’s story in such a compelling way. I can’t wait for the next book in the series & am hoping we get to see more of Roxhanna & Adin.

Highly recommend to Biblical fiction & historical romance fans! I received an advanced complimentary copy from the author & publisher. All opinions are my own & voluntarily provided.

Over the years, I have had the opportunity to read several books that centered around biblical stories but included just enough fiction so that the stories and characters were reimagined in a whole new way. That was what Tessa Afshar has done in The Queen’s Cook (Queen Esther’s Court #1). She has taken the familiar bible story of Queen Esther and Haman to another dimension. It was both captivating and fascinating. The characters were well developed and I enjoyed the elements of the mystery that were woven into the story. It was extremely well written. The Queen’s Cook took place in the ancient Persian Empire. I listened to the audiobook that was well narrated by Rachel Botchan and Jonathan Todd Ross. The story drew me in immediately. I was hooked from the very beginning.

Roxannah was the daughter of a once privileged Lord. Her father had fallen on hard times though. He often indulged in drinking now and more often took his frustrations out on her gentle mother. Roxannah had given up all hope of a good marriage prospect for herself. With her father’s downfall, Roxannah had no dowry to offer anyone suitable. Roxannah had accepted her fate. Then one night, her father came home hurt and was in need of a doctor. She was sent to get the Jewish doctor and bring him back to treat her father. When Roxannah located Adin, the very handsome physician, she was unnerved by the feelings she felt in his presence. Soon after meeting Adin, Roxannah learned about an edict that the king had passed pertaining to the Jewish people in Persia. She went to warn Adin about it and her father’s part in it. Roxannah’s father was determined to kill Adin and take all he had to pay off his debts. Things went terribly wrong that night and Adin was left with no choice but to kill Roxannah’s father. The guilt he felt for that act tortured Adin even though he was given no choice in what he was forced to do. After that, Roxannah found herself needing a job to support herself and her mother. She also had to pay back her father’s debts. Adin was able to help Roxannah get a position as an assistant’s assistant to the cook for Queen Esther. He was well acquainted with Queen Esther and he himself was the physician at the palace.

Roxannah was excited and nervous about her new position. She knew that she had a lot to prove to the kitchen staff before they would accept her and recognize her talents. Roxannah was met with skepticism, negative reactions and ridicule. She and Adin often found themselves in the same room. A friendship slowly developed between them. Over time, Roxannah and Adin discovered a sinister plot that was aimed at the King’s first and most powerful wife, Queen Amestris. Adin and Roxannah worked together to uncover who was behind it. The romance that gradually grew between Roxannah and Adin was beautiful. Over time, Roxannah forged a bond and a strong relationship with Queen Esther as well and Roxannah’s culinary skills were given the chance to shine.

I really enjoyed listening to The Queen’s Cook by Tessa Afshar. Each chapter began with a biblical verse that pertained to the part of the story in that chapter. The characters were all very well developed and defined. I really enjoyed all the detailed descriptions of the food Roxannah and the kitchen staff prepared for the Queen. The Queen’s Cook examined adversity, trust, relationships, friendships, family, differences in religious beliefs and rituals, prejudice, acceptance, tolerance, respect, romance and greed. I am looking forward to the next book in this series and I highly recommend this one.

Title: The Queen’s Cook
Author: Tessa Afshar
Genre: Biblical Fiction
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Synopsis: “Unlike him, Roxannah had learned to guard her heart because of unhappiness…she has closed the gates of her heart, lest the quakes of pain dismantle the beams of her very being.” Roxannah has grown up in a troubled home for many years and has felt forced to hide because of the actions of her father. Her dreams of the future feel crushed beneath the weight of his choices. But when life’s circumstances introduce her to a kind Jewish royal physician, she notices something very different about him and his faith. Adin is at peace even when an edict from the Persian king threatens his future. Given the chance he to defend himself, Roxannah’s and Adin’s worlds collide and change forever. Shame, bitterness, and grief threaten to topple the growing relationship they have. But Adin still seeks to help Roxannah by finding her a place as a cook in the queen’s court. As palace life unfolds, so do the schemes of those who would harm the royal family. Adin and Roxannah must work together to overcome their pasts, preserve their present, and fight for the future.

Analysis: Queen Esther’s story is an extremely familiar one for any woman who has studied the Bible any length of time, but you probably haven’t seen it quite like this! In this book, you’ll follow the timeline of Esther’s story through the eyes of Roxannah, the queen’s cook. I thoroughly enjoyed her character and the Jewish physician Adin who helped open her eyes to faith in the One True God. Another thing I loved about this book was the layers! You get recipes, mystery, royalty, romance, and faith plus a strong female lead. If you’re looking for a unique perspective on a popular Bible story, Tessa Afshar does a beautiful job with bringing Queen Esther’s court to life.

"In this world, sometimes God's faithfulness looks like success. Like healing. Like open doors. And sometimes, his faithfulness looks like a pit of suffering. It looks like injustice and pain... God's faithfulness can sometimes seem hard. But it's never cruel... Though he may allow tribulation in your life, he never leaves you in that pit, abandoned and alone. Those are the times he draws closest. The times he adds his strength to your bowed-down heart. The times his love is so tender, you can rest against it like a feather pillow."

I haven't been able to stop thinking about this story. From the very first page, I was hooked!

SYNOPSIS: "In the heart of ancient Persia, the empire's Jewish citizens face an ominous edict that threatens their very existence.

This story is so diverse - full of romance, mystery, biblical history, faith, and recipes. I have said it before, and I'll say it again. No one does biblical fiction like Tessa Afshar. The way I am immediately catapulted into biblical times, intertwining my life with her characters so deeply is unmatched. I loved seeing the slow-burn romance unfold between Roxannah and Adin. I enjoyed seeing her discover the Hebrew God and come to have faith in Him through every trauma and trial she went through. I appreciated the insight from Queen Esther's scrolls. I was intrigued by the mystery and political intrigue surrounding the palace. And I was left with my mouth watering from all of the delicious food descriptions.

Thank you to Tessa Afshar, Bethany House, and NetGalley for providing me with an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review. I cannot wait to continue in the Queen Esther's Court series!

Tessa Afshar’s The Queen’s Cook serves up a thoughtful blend of historical mystery, palace intrigue, and richly imagined culinary detail, set in the court of Queen Esther. Roxannah, a young Persian woman with a gift for cooking, seeks employment in the palace kitchens after the death of her abusive, alcoholic father. Struggling to rebuild her life while shielding her mother from poverty, Roxannah enters a world rife with political maneuvering and secrets. Allied with Adin, the palace’s Jewish physician, the two uncover a plot against Amestris, the king’s consort, whose envy of Esther has far-reaching consequences.

Haman’s infamous scheme against the Jews creates tension, directly impacting Roxannah and Adin’s growing relationship, but the story stays centered on the hidden dangers within the palace walls. Afshar balances themes of betrayal, forgiveness, and sacrificial love with Roxannah’s slow recognition of God as a refuge. “It takes time for your soul to learn these deeper truths,” a key character reminds her, reflecting the book’s steady focus on trust.

Afshar’s attention to detail shines most brightly in the food descriptions, which immerse readers in the textures and flavors of Persian cuisine. Though aromas remain tantalizingly out of reach, her prose captures the care and creativity of Roxannah’s craft, adding depth to the story. The audiobook, narrated by Rachel Botchan and Jonathan Todd Ross, enhances the experience with seamless dual narration, skillfully giving voice to both Roxannah and Adin. This novel will appeal to fans of biblical fiction, historical intrigue, and foodie fiction alike.

I enjoy retellings, and Purim is one of my favorite (real) stories. This author has a Queen Esther's Court series and actually tells the Queen Esther Story from three different vantage points, but I think as much as I enjoyed this, I can be one and done here.

So many elements of the original story are in there with accuracy, but food is at the center when it comes to the feasts that Esther has to hold to persuade the King that Haman's Edict to kill the Jews must be reversed. And the deliciousness of the food of the three feasts is at the heart of the seduction from Haman to herself, to re-fall in love with her and save her, as well as an entire people. But there are also Spies and a Plot to kill the King, and our main romantic couple, a Persian cook in the Queen's Court, and. Jewish Physician become at the heart of entanglement around plots to bring harm to the court, and the Book of Memorable Deeds, also crucial to the plot is entwined here as well, so I did think it was well and cleverly done.

Here' what I thought was interesting. You don't see that many Interfaith courtships and love affairs highlighted from that era in history, so I found this one a little different, and I like it when there is a different take like that. Roxannah is Persian and her father was high in the King's Court and involved in the revolt against the Jews. But the interfaith piece here is not a part of the conflict between them. It was really more about trauma and family dynamics and honorable action, and whether that could divide them. It was never about "differences" culturally. Those didn't seem to matter a bit. Queen Esther plays a little Matchmaker and Feminist Role model here too, which as a side angle was "cute." But the book was neither about the love story nor interfaith. It really was to highlight the re-telling of the Purim story in a way that might really look at Power Dynamics and the role of women and what women could do in their circumstances, with powerful men. In fact that was far more a theme of the book, was what a woman could do with her choices. I enjoyed it.

Historical Fiction

“An open door does not always lead to an easy path.”

**Thank you to Netgalley and the Publisher for this advanced audio copy of The Queens Cook by Tessa Afshar, in exchange for an honest review. **

This book made me hungry 😋. I love to cook, so I was excited to read this one. The Queens Cook takes place during the reign of Queen Esther. Afshar does what she always does, from the very start you are thrown into an ancient realm full of lush history and historical atmosphere. This author, is an automatic read author for me, because she does biblical fiction so well. You learn as you read and immediately want to go to your Bible when done to dive into whatever story she just put her spin on. She always amazes me with how she can take an ordinary story , one we’ve read a thousand times and make it come alive in a whole new way, without completely changing the original. It’s truly a gift. The characters in this story were likable and I really enjoyed the faith elements and sweet romance. Definitely one I would recommend!

Audio 🎧 5/5 ✨

The narrator’s did an excellent job bringing this story to life- told from two povs (male and female character) with an added narrative in between.

This was such a unique and meaningful story. I always feel like Biblical fiction always does such a great job of showing us what it looks like to choose God... and live a life for him. In this story Roxannah is trying to find her place wanting to help her family and Jewish friends while chasing her dream of working in the queen’s kitchen. She ends up crossing paths with Adin (the royal physician), and they end up needing to work together when danger starts to threaten the royal kingdom. But can they discover the culprit before its too late?

I loved watching Adin and Roxannah's friendship grow, even through the ups and downs. Both have walls around their hearts, and it was beautiful to see them slowly open up. The scrolls from Queen Esther added a lot of depth too, and really helped bring to life her part of the story. Roxannah’s struggle with her faith and identity in God felt real and powerful. The romance is slow, but so sweet...and worth the wait! I’m really curious to see what happens in book two!!!

"The Queen's Cook" was my first foray into the work of Tessa Afshar, but it certainly won't be my last!

From the warmth of a quaint kitchen to the wonder of an ornate palace, Afshar's vivid descriptions make the time of Queen Esther come to life, whisking readers on an immersive tour of the Persian Empire. Tactile details and hypnotic prose create a sensory experience, engaging the imagination to the fullest, while multifaceted characters with nuanced emotions, captivate the heart.

Fragrant with the truth of Scripture and rich with the complexities of ancient history, this riveting tale drew me in from the first few pages and keep me utterly riveted until The End.

If you're in the mood for a page-turning Biblical fiction novel, allow me to introduce you to "The Queen's Cook!"

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. A favorable review was not required. All views expressed are my own honest opinion.

I have so much I want to say about The Queen’s Cook. Literally everytime I sat to try to write a review, I just got overwhelmed by my love for this story, these characters, and my God. But instead of overloading you with exposition (I promise reading the synopsis would be better than my version), I want to share about why I loved this:

🧡 Tessa’s dedication to setting. TQC takes us to ancient Persia and I could see, hear, and even taste, the scenes.
🧡 A new take on Esther. I love that in biblical fiction, the core of Biblical narratives are honored while providing authors with creative space to color inside the lines.
🧡 My girl Roxannah. Her character arc was perfect and … gah, I don’t want to spoil anything, but I just want to give her a hug and ask her to teach me some cooking/baking skills!
🧡 ADIN THE PHYSICIAN! If you’re looking for a man who protects the vulnerable, is very competent, encourages and cares for your soul, then look no further.
🧡 A kissing-only romance, a high-stakes mystery, and a realistic spiritual & emotional journey
🧡 A few nods to Tessa’s previous books 🫶🏼
🧡 SO. MANY. OTHER. THINGS. But you’ll have to read it for yourself and then come chat in my DMs!!

A beautifully told continuation of the story of Esther.

I struggled to connect to the story in the beginning but by the end I was invested more with the characters. I loved the faith journey and the journey the main character took from being in an abusive home, to working for the queen's kitchen! I liked the sweet romance as well. I also really liked how the author used flashbacks from Esther's life in the Bible to help connect the past and the future.

*Thank you to Bethany House for a complimentary copy of this book to read. All thoughts are my own.

This story immediately grabs you and doesn't let go. Tessa Afshar does such an incredible job at truly capturing the opulence of ancient Persia. I always say that Biblical Fiction gives us the "what-if's" of what we are already reading in the Word. The author takes a story from the Bible and with their extensive research comes up with a story that is not only interesting but also filled with faith and lets you wonder if these scenarios could've really happened.

In this story we meet Roxhanna, a Persian woman, who is a noblewoman is impoverished by actions her father has taken. She is caring and has learned cooking skills from her grandmother. She wants to help her Jewish friends as an edict has been served by the King. I won't tell you too much of the story but her transformation and growth in the story is amazing. We also meet Adin, the royal physician, who also helps not only Roxhanna with different things in her life, especially getting a position in the Queens kitchen. But let us not discount Adin so hastily, he may be considered the love interest for Roxhanna but he is so much more. He truly guides Roxhanna to see who God wants her to be and the path she should follow. He helps her be strong and rely on the one who gives strength.

Did I mention this book is also about Queen Esther ? She is one of my favorite women in the Bible so it was neat to see another side of her (again another what-if) We see her as more than a queen but also a sister in Christ. Although her scenes were brief, they were powerful. We continue to see Esther just like we see her in the Bible, fighting for her people and we continue seeing her trust in God deepen.

I really enjoyed the story and I cannot wait to see how the next book unfolds. If you enjoy biblical fiction and stories that are filled with faith then you need to add this to your list.

This was my first book by Tessa Afshar, and it was a spectacular introduction! I was thrilled that I had the opportunity to read it in one sitting as I could truly be transported to Persia in biblical times through this powerful, yet humbling story. I loved the characters of Roxannah and Adin and how they devoted their lives to serving others. In meeting these wonderful characters, I couldn't get enough of them as they maneuvered the inner workings of the royal court. I also loved getting a glimpse into Queen Esther's inner thoughts, with the story between her and Amestris a fascinating intrigue that captivated my attention throughout the book. This complex undertaking of multiple stories brilliantly wove the lives of the servants together with those they served, giving a full sense of being in Queen Esther's court.

In addition to a compelling story, the messages of faith in The Queen's Cook were poignant and meaningfully seasoned the book to perfection. Not only did the characters grow in their understanding of God's faithfulness, but they also pointed to His presence during hardship and trials. What stood out for me were the images of eating at God's table, relying on Him for sustenance, and being in fellowship with believers. Each description of food made the book even more of a culinary adventure to be savoured. If you love the idea of food as a metaphor for spiritual feasting, this book will be sure to delight all of the senses.

The Queen’s Cook read like classic Tessa Afshar, which is to say… it was a thoroughly entertaining novel with romance, truth, and beautiful themes. From the start, Afshar’s prose flowed easily as it unpacked information. Her writing felt confident and was crafted so that the scenes always moved the story forward in some way. Like Roxannah creating her pistachio cake, Afshar deftly added the ingredients of historical details, longshot romance, delectable meals, palace intrigue, character growth, and spiritual truths to create a five-star reading experience.

To elaborate on the elements in The Queen’s Cook, I’ll start with the historical setting. Roxannah’s noble status and experiences in Esther’s royal kitchen richly depicted the Persian court under Xerxes, an environment where palace intrigue swirled amid every level of social status. As Roxannah and Adin were drawn into the mystery and danger, they faced underhanded workers in the kitchen, a cunning wife of Xerxes, and power dynamics among the royal court. Quite a perilous blend.

As expected, The Queen’s Cook included culinary delights. I found the exotic dishes interesting even for a non-foodie like me. Naturally, food played a part in establishing and perpetuating the romance between Adin and Roxannah. I enjoyed Adin’s kind and thoughtful treatment of Roxannah despite the hard issues between them. It was lovely to watch their romance unfold.

Being raised in Persian nobility, Roxannah showed herself to be morally upright, loyal, and clever, but she did not devote herself to any deity. Even so, Afshar weaved in spiritual themes as Roxannah’s past trauma and current circumstances moved her toward knowing the Lord’s mercy and love. Roxannah’s faith journey felt genuine, and I loved that her faith served to make her stronger.

The Queen’s Cook by Tessa Afshar commenced her new series, Queen Esther’s Court. Though the novel felt complete and held a satisfying ending, Esther’s secret scrolls cleverly tie the series together. I am eager for the next novel. Five stars for The Queen’s Cook.

Once again, Tessa skilfully takes beloved Bible characters and spins a wholly immersive tale of hope, restoration, and forgiveness complete with amazing historical detail.
Roxannah's healing journey and her journey to finding the Lord and trusting Him was so moving, and Adin's steady and graceful presence in her life added great depth. For the foodies out there, the cooking content is another highly enjoyable element. Sort of off topic, but the cooking scenes reminded me of the Ratatouille movie (one of my favs) when the Gusteau's chefs have to cook for the critic: Esther is a much improved version of Ego, and Roxannah is a not-so-rodent like version of Remy.
I love how Roxannah stepped into her calling God placed on her life with increased confidence as a leader.
I'm curious to see where this series will go and how it will further explore Esther's role in ancient Persia!

Think Food Channel with political intrigue and you have just a taste of Tessa Afshar’s latest, THE QUEEN’S COOK! Biblical fiction at its best, Tessa gives us the feels and tastes of Persia, a fresh interpretation of the Esther story, and the Jewish peoples’ plight during diaspora.

THE STORY: Roxannah’s life as the daughter of a Persia noble drastically changes with her father’s alcohol and physical abuse. The ray of light in her life is her love of cooking. Thanks to her father’s Jewish physician, Adin, she gains an entry level position within Queen Esther’s kitchens. Her dream job turns to a nightmare when she and Adin overhear a plot to kill Queen Esther’s rival. Add to the bubbling stew the favor she receives from the main cook for her skill that surpasses even the assistants around her, Roxannah is thrown into a race to save a princess’s life—and her own.

Always love a creative yet plausible interpretation of the Esther story. Tessa’s point-of-view of a lonely queen who has the love of the king and loyalty of servants around her, but disdain from the court is always how I had pictured Hadassa’s life as Queen Esther. The political intrigue and social mores were fascinating and moving. As someone who lives a Jewish lifestyle, Tessa did a fabulous job of depicting the lifestyle, customs, and persecutions around them.

Roxannah’s faith journey was authentic and encouraging. The developing romance between Roxannah and Adin was fraught with almost as much peril as the royal intrigue.

Loved the food descriptions, however, for some reason I was hungry while reading this book. Haha.

Highly recommended for readers of Tessa Afshar, Biblical fiction, strong women characters, romance, Esther stories, political intrigue and mysteries.

I received an ARC from the publisher for my honest review.

Phenomenal book. Not only was this story a complete page-turner, but I was enveloped in the ancient world of Persia in a way a book rarely can do. Tessa made this story come alive in a beautiful way--and the food! I almost felt I was eating all the delicacies described. So good. Highly recommend!

What an amazing read! I absolutely loved getting to dive back into another intricately crafted world by Ms Afshar. As I've always said, she has such an incredible gift in world-building and story-telling, and this novel was no exception.

The setting was so intriguing and interesting. Despite a lot of the novel being centered around Roxannah in the kitchens of Queen Esther, the richness of ancient Persia was still brought to life as the characters encountered various dangers and challenges. My favourite parts of the novel was as the characters explored the palace of Susa and all the court intrigue that followed.

The most fascinating aspect for me was seeing Queen Esther through the eyes of our main characters. I've read countless Biblical fiction that recount the events of Esther through her point of view, but it was truly refreshing to read about the events through the eyes of Roxannah and Adin. It brought the book of Esther to life like I've never experienced before.

The romance was also so sweet and despite the obstacles that came in the way of their love, I was cheering for Roxannah and Adin as they finally professed their love for one another.

Overall, another fantastic novel by Ms Afshar, and I am genuinely so so so excited that there are going to be two more books in the series following Queen Esther's reign! I would highly recommend this novel.

As always if I recommend a book to my wife then it is a winner in more ways than one. There are so many things to like about this book and author. But first, reading the Author's Note is very important and if it wasn't for the "Spoiler Alert!" I would recommend it from the start. There is a reason or two of course for having the author's note in the back of the book and I tend to want to read through the book first wandering what the author's comments will contain at the end. The central character of Esther is such a worthy subject, and I like that this will be the first of three books each focusing on a slightly different vantage point with each telling. There is plenty of romance for my wife though not too much for myself. The interplay between the characters is fascinating including Esther and her rival in the court. But, most of all it tells the story of a dramatic and tarnished childhood of our heroine and how she was able to cope with the help of others leading her to a faith in the God of the Jewish people. Ten discussion questions are contained in the back. The descriptions of the various scenes will bring alive your imagination and senses including the food. Who doesn't like to talk about food prepared and consumed well. More importantly the author implores the reader to discover the book from the Bible that bears Esther's name. She reminds us that her stories in no way replace the transformative power that we get when we avail ourselves to the Holy Scriptures.
