[ PG-13] The Twenty-seventh novel in the award-winning "Tropical Frontier" series, "The Foundling" is, in addition, the Second novel in the "Castaway" sub-series. Tim Robinson is the award-winning author of Florida-based historical fiction (Patrick D. Smith Award, Florida Historical Society, 2015, 2018, 2021, 2022).
It is 1715, and Caspar Crispian - former slave, celebrated opera star, notorious pirate, and wanted man in at least four nations - has found his place in the world. Home is a desolate, tropic shore, located at the confluence of the Atlantic Ocean, two rivers, and a meandering creek that extends its fingers deep into the fabled sawgrass expanses to the south. Here, a native seaside village called Jobe, his is a life of contentment and familial joy - a loving wife, a beautiful daughter, and good friends. Then, one day, Fate steps in, in the form of a hurricane and the most disastrous Spanish treasure fleet wreck in history. Caspar's life will never be the same.
Tim Robinson is a third generation Floridian, his grandfather having taken up a 100 acre homestead on Cape Canaveral in 1924. It was his grandfather and father who instilled in him a love for everything Florida. Tim grew up in West Palm Beach, halfway between saltwater Lake Worth and freshwater Lake Mangonia, where he spent his childhood and youth traipsing through the woods or biking over to the beach or taking in the wonders of Florida in some fashion or another. He lives with his wife, Connie, on a small farm in Indiantown, Florida.
On an isolated island, a man and his wife are childless; until a newborn baby is 'found' from floating among the debris of a shipwreck, having been led to the baby's location by a 'mystical' pelican. Sounds a little out there, right? But, actually, it's quite good. The young girl grows up; she's around 16 years old when a pirate ship ends up wrecking on the island during a terrific storm. The sailors remember a tale of a shipwreck that took the lives of a royal family, including the newborn daughter Princess. As they put two and two together, many dramatic things happen, including finding the truth of the identity of the father; himself a legendary dastardly pirate. This was a fairly cool tale!
This is an interesting book. I was intrigued by the pirate aspect. It's about so much more than piracy. There's adventure, a miracle baby, royalty, treasure, shipwrecks and more! The one part that made me sad was the killing of a whale. I do understand its cultural significance but it's still heartbreaking. There's salty language too but it's pirates, iykyk! I'll definitely be reading more books by this author. I won this book via a Goodreads giveaway. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
LIke all books in this series I cannot sing Tim Robinson's praises in writing enough. I am so glad that he is continuing the series.
His characters are well written, his storylines are true to history, he really puts the time into the series that is necessary to travel through time in regards to Florida.
Honestly I wasn’t expecting to like this book as much as I did. I mean who doesn’t love a great pirate story? Especially one with as much adventure as this one has, along with royalty, treasure, prisoners, ship wrecks, prostitutes, mayhem, and plenty of looting. All of this mixed with a little romance made for a great read. I won this book on Goodreads in exchange for an honest review.
A rip roaring nautical adventure that overflows with lively dialogue and heartwarming characters. There are sword fights, pirates, princesses, and everything necessary for a good old tale. Think Peter Pan, the princess bride, and pirates of the caribbean all mixed together.
This book was a great adventure. It is about pirates, the Jobe and life many years ago. The characters are so captivating. I have enjoyed all of the books I have read in this series.
Tim Robinson never disappoints. His books always hold your interest from beginning to end. Love his historic writings. Looking forward to his next novel.
I really enjoyed this book. I’m going to have to get the first in the series. I haven’t read anything by this author before but I’m looking forward to reading more. #goodreadsgiveaway
