I’ve already proved I’m a coward. Now I have two waste away or become the sorceress I was born to be.
I watched my entire village die, betrayed by our own. Instead of dying with them, I hid behind my weak magic to save myself–and got caught in the traitors' spell. Now I’m bonded to a servant of Death, immune to time, healing from any injury. Trapped on this earth with my grief and my guilt.
I quickly learn the world is filled with more evil than I ever imagined, and my power is no match for it. I know Emrick can help me, but doing so would break his one never get involved in the mortal world. Bond or no bond, I don't know if I can sway him. Especially not as my feelings for him grow as confusing as the rapidly-changing world. I couldn't save my family, a failure that will haunt me for the rest of my long life, but if I become a strong enough sorceress, a skilled enough hunter, maybe I stand a chance at redemption.
Set nearly a millennium before the main series, this exciting Immortal Sorceress prequel offers sorcery, danger, and a love story that spans centuries.
Known for witty, vivid characters, Krista Walsh never has more fun than getting them into trouble and taking her time getting them out. When not writing, she can be found walking, reading, gaming, or watching a film – anything to get lost in a good story. She currently lives in Ottawa, Ontario
While I’m not fond of prequels, I will read just about anything this author writes. This book takes us on the journey of how Katerina/Kate and Emerick meet, and it is really a wild ride. It is fun, sad, and interesting how they take so long to get together and how long it takes Kate to come into her extraordinary powers. Add in Adrian, and this is an engaging and well-written read. I don’t want to spoil it too much, but this makes me a little sad at how things have changed and hope that it can be this way again. Sure to please fans of the series, or a great introduction to those who haven’t read the first two. Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
Finally we get the story behind the story. A blast from the past. What a great but tearful ride with Katerina's past, building her magic, but still gets bogged down by her inferior feelings re her beloved dead family, feeling she's not measuring up to their standards. Meeting and becoming firm friends with Adrian while battling the raging passion between her and Emrick. A must read I received an advanced review copy and leave this review voluntary Thank you
It was incredibly cool to get the background on both Emrick and Kat. It puts so much into perspective and it has elevated my enjoyment of the series ten fold! Once more from two POV'S, the story unfolds in an earthshatteringly way. Earthshatteringly for both of them, she because she has lost everything, everyone she loves has been ripped from her; he because of what Kat evokes in him and what it does to him, events which were described so vividly, I was in my element! But back to the beginning....it's the beginning of the end for Kat's life as she knew it, a twist of fate that has her imbued with immortality, a bond with a reaper and more guilt than she can process. Which, needless to say, is denial material for Kat. All the events leading up to it is difficult for Kat to digest, to make sense of it all. Luckily there's this awesome guy who takes her under his wing, so what if he's a reaper, I sure ain't complaining! Emrick is REALLY awesome! Swoon worthy awesome...but he can't jolt Kat from her despair. And besides, he has his own hurdles to navigate, quite the task in itself!
After shrouding herself tightly in her grief, Kat gets a nasty awakening. It took her many many years of despondency, of merely existing, when she had no desire to, for reality to set in. So this tiny 5'4" fire cracker, oops, pun there... 😁 is ready to go, except....she goes straight into danger! A chance meeting with a priest sets a whole different ball rolling. I loved Godfrey, what a kind, genuine guy he is, as are Jean and Edith. The introduction of these characters slid in seamlessly. Although they were a brief moment in Kat's life, they were an integral part of her healing process, giving her a much needed reason to put aside her remorse, to care, to protect. Her bumbling attempts are no match for what she faced, almost doing her in. But Emrick swoops in to rescue her just in time and I was thrilled with Kat meeting Adrian for the first time. Seeing how their relationship developed over the years from the initial scepticism of Adrian and the mistrust by Kat, opened up a warm feeling in my tummy.
Oh I neglected to mention, THIS author will twist your emotions with the incredible characters and storytelling she graces us with. So real, so realistic, so compelling, SO immersive. So raw are my emotions when I'm engaged in this spectacular world the author so lovingly handled, my heart spluttered and shattered a few times. I simply ADORE how Ms Walsh peels away layer upon layer of complex characters and lays them out with all their vulnerability and flaws. Yet, at the same time, allowing us to understand what motivates them, what is truly buried deep within in, without a doubt, a superb talent I lap up like a thirsty kitty. Although I have 'met' these characters in other books in this stunning series, each one of the characters felt new, fresh and added an extra zing to them. I am SO THRILLED that the author wrote this prequel and I wholeheartedly recommend you start your journey right here! Trust me, THIS is a journey you WANT to embark on, a journey you WANT to undertake!
CW: trauma, death of family, attempted SA, violence, some others
As always, a big thank you to the author for allowing me to be a part of the ARC team! “Power of the Sorceress” releases April 25, 2024!
We love a good prequel novella, and this one is no exception!
Kat Palon is known and feared far and wide, a reputation she’s earned time and again, but things weren’t always like this. Once upon a time, she was Katerina of Palonia. So how did Katerina, the weakest member of her clan, survive their slaughter? How did she meet the spirit herder who would become the greatest love of her immortal life? Or the vampire who would become her closest friend? In short, how did Katerina become Kat?
At long last, the answers I’ve been dying for! We finally get Kat’s backstory! Or at least part of it. 800+ years is a lot of backstory, after all. I suppose it would be more accurate to call this her origin story. Whatever you want to call it, this is the story of how Kat lost her family, how she gained her immortality, and how she came to know the two men who would become her closest companions in the coming centuries.
One of the most interesting things about this book is the radical difference between the Kat we’ve come to know and love in her later years and the Katerina that we first meet here. She has almost no control over a very limited portion of her power, she has no confidence, and her entire world has just been ripped apart right in front of her. Being able to convey that difference, and the growth that follows, in a novella of this length is impressive, and I was so excited to watch Kat’s character develop into what we now know.
The other main difference between this book and the later installments is that this book takes place exclusively in the past, as opposed to exclusively in the present. This shift was a really fun read, especially as a significant portion occurs in the same time and place as another urban/historic fantasy series that I enjoy.
Naturally you know the story itself was amazing, as all of the author’s Immortal Sorceress series has been. As I’ve already mentioned, getting to see Kat grow and develop was wonderful, but I think my favorite part was watching her with Emrick. It’s a love story that’s survived centuries; you know the beginning was going to be just as epic.
All in all, this was another great addition to the series! Even though it chronologically occurs prior to all the other stories, I think I’d actually suggest reading this one after book 1, and possibly after book 2. While you’d be missing the background for some of the modern day events, I think you’d have a greater feel for just how radical a change Kat undergoes and just how far she’s really come. Either way you want to read it, you definitely need to get started.
This entire series has been an absolute blast so far. After teases of the past history between FMC and MMC, Kat and Emrick, I was more than ready to dive into the past and learn how it all began. Walsh did not disappoint (and I never for an instant thought she would).
To give as brief a recap as possible: when her village of sorcerers is attacked/used as bait to summon a greater power by three of their own, sole survivor Katerina finds herself bound to a servant of Death—Emrick, shepherd of magical souls. Power of the Sorceress follows her journey through grief and rage to re-discovery of herself and a purpose as the long road of immortality stretches out before her.
While Walsh has laid the groundwork for the delicious pining and tension between Kat and Emrick in two previous novels and a novella, getting a front-row seat to their story unfolding over the decades was delightful. Sweeping across England in the 12th Century into Crusades-riddled southern France, Walsh writes with a confidence of history and time without overwhelming the reader with the stickier politics of the era, and she uses this higher-level space to great advantage. Helping in this is how her immortal characters perceive time and the deployment of these conversations as the much older Emrick prepares his accidental companion for the future that awaits her.
It is particularly heartbreaking to know where Kat is at the start of the Immortal Sorceress series and to see how her apathy toward modernity is mirrored by the warnings of the past. As with each book in the series, I require, nay, DEMAND more Adrian in all things. But fans of the fancy vampire will be pleased with the role he has to play and the advice he gleefully doles out to our thick-headed lovesick leads.
ALSO, Walsh has written one of the creepier villains I’ve come across in a while, and I had to set my e-reader down and take a moment before re-reading his first appearance in this novella because it was done SO WELL.
If you like world-weary main characters, found family, and fast-paced fantasy, this entire series is for you. While a prequel, I would recommend starting with Fire of the Sorceress so the emotional beats in Power of the Sorceress hit, but you could certainly start here as a primer and not be lost in the world.
Power of the Sorceress really had me in its clutches from the first page all the way to the last page. It starts out with Katrina in her home village with her family when tragedy hits. Her trusted teachers had turned greedy and power hungry and wanted all power for them selves. Of which when being too greedy doesn't turn out so good for anybody; and Kate is left the only survivor because she thought for her safety. After traveling with Emrick for 3 years she still mourned her family and didn't talk much and fought terrible nightmares of what had happened and hardly ate.. it was like she was there but not. Kate was broken inside with guilt over the fact that she was still alive but not her family. Even though Emrick told her that what had happened was tragic but it wasn't her fault. He brought her clothes and food as at times he had to leave her for days on end to do his duties reaping the souls of the magical dead to their final destination. I loved the family that took Katrina in Jean and Edith.. They helped Katrina realize that the humans in the world were not any different then her own family was to her. Father Godfrey was an amazing help to Katrina.. by telling her to pray when going up against the Demon that Katrina was looking for. These humans were in Katrina's life for only a short time but they had an in-depth impact on her. Miss Walsh with all her books that she writes takes you for an incredible ride that keeps you captive until the very end. I love that about her books as the are filled with lots of action, small amount of romance with sometimes a forbidden love interest and leaves you hanging with you wanting more to come. So, If you enjoy Excitement, Traveling through the Wild Countryside, And Female characters coming into their own.. then this book is definitely for you.
This is a prequel to The Immortal Sorceress series and wow! This book has some very powerful emotions! If you are familiar with Kat then you know she is an immortal sorceress bound to Emrick by a twist of fate ruining a black magic ritual. This book delves into the back story of how Kat and Emrick came to be bound and fall in love. After losing her husband and child along with the rest of her clan, she travels the country with Emrick, Death's servant. As a mother myself, this book really gives me the feels and helps me understand the pain and loss that Kat experiences. I was absolutely heartbroken for her! When she finally finds her voice and herself again, she is determined to find the demon responsible for the claims of heresy on the Good Christians. And if you have read Fear of the Sorceress, you will know of this back story. (And in my personal opinion, I think this story was much better for having read book 2 first.) Shogaur is a fear demon manipulating the nobles and the priests into a war. Can Kat find enough power to save herself and help the people she has come to love? And it does not end there! This is also the story for how Kat and Adrian became such great friends and how the 3 together ended up being feared throughout the supernatural community. Emrick finally realizes he must help her learn how to harness her powers in order to keep her safe. And with that, she begins her journey with Adrian. I adored this book and loved the look back at Kat, Emrick and Adrian's history. It really was an emotional ride in a very good way! It really explains why Kat and Adrian have ended up the way they did in the first book, out of touch and basically in hiding. I also can't wait to find out if we will ever find out what Emrick's deal with Death was!
I guess you can say Power of the Sorceress is a prequel to the prequel, Fury of the Sorceress. "Power" delves all the way back to Kat's beginnings and fills in all the missing pieces. Those who want to know the how and why of Katerina will appreciate this book. In addition to the wonderful character development, Ms. Walsh sets an amazing scene immersing the reader into the story as if she is a bystander watching it all unfold. It isn't always a happy story as Kat has had a very difficult existence...but it isn't only a tragic story either. It's heart-warming to watch her love and friendship develop with Emrick and Adrian. Theirs is a bond that will last through all the centuries. I definitely recommend Power of the Sorceress to all who have read Krista Walsh's Immortal Sorceress books. It will provide the reader with an even richer understanding and basis for the subsequent novels.
What fun! Having read a couple of great books in this series, and having so many questions about how things all came about, it was wonderful to have a chance to read an arc of this prequel book. And fun it was, albeit in a historical way that a lot of bad things happened... but also some good. I really do appreciate the effort this talented author has made to do the research and get the history pretty accurate. For those that know the period, it does make a difference to the quality of the read. And how captivating to find out about Kat and Emrick's earlier encounters, and how their relationship developed. Fans of romance will not be disappointed - although it is not a romance novel. It was also interesting to find out how the previous demon encounter played out. I will be happy to return to the present day with the next book in this spellbinding series, but am very happy to have had the opportunity to have so many of those questions of mine answered!
It's unusual to get a prequel after three books in a series but I think that actually made this one so much more satisfying. Readers know the Kat, Emrick and Adrian of the present day but to now see the ending of Kat's mortal life then the beginning and early years of her immortal one is an amazing thing because we have already formed a solid connection with her. Krista Walsh writes emotions, action and magic incredibly well and so the journey through our MC's pasts is one of many highs and lows. The author shows us things often tantalisingly referred to in books one and two, including how the bond between Emrick and Kat was formed. I loved having that broken down so simply and clearly! However, there are still the blank spaces of Adrian and Emrick's lives and I can only hope there are pre-prequels coming for them too.
I have enjoyed everything I've read by this author and will always recommend her stories.
Power of the Sorceress pulls at all of the heartstrings… the first chapter really was emotional to me as the scene and aftermath of how Katerina became immortal played out.
I have loved each book more and more in this series and this one follows suit. I have fallen more in love with Katerina… it was incredible to learn her origin story. I absolutely loved seeing her more mortal, softer side in this book since she hasn’t quite yet been hardened or burdened by centuries of time. Reading how she became acquainted with Emrick and Adrian also made me fall in love with and appreciate both of them as well.
Power of the Sorceress is a must read! It has so many amazing and moving moments. & quotes. I’ll definitely be rereading and recommending to others.
In the first two books of the Immortal Sorceress series, we’ve been shown snippets of Kat and Emrick’s history. So, going into this prequel, we more or less know how each episode will end. Which might make one not want to bother. But this would be a mistake!
I loved this book, which fleshed out these stories we’d only had outlines of previously. Kat and Emrick’s relationship grows in a respectful and realistic manner, given the tragedy which spawned it. Although not essential for following the main storyline, I highly recommend this book for fans of the series who want to experience the horrors and joys of Kat’s first century as the immortal sorceress. It would also make a great introduction to new readers of the series.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This tale gives new life to the old catchphrase, "a romance for the ages"; it is so ferocious a love as to be irresistible. Not to mention that the greater story of the book keeps the pages turning. The emotional growth of the protagonist, Katerina, is intense, hard won, and profound. This story brings in elements of fantasy, history, adventure tale, quest, and tragedy turned triumphant. So much depth for a novella! I highly recommend this book to get to know some wonderful characters and learn their origin stories!
I read this after finishing the rest of the series, and I love how Walsh pulled so many stories that were mentioned in the books into this prequel.
Kat and Adrian's friendship grew naturally, not at all forced. I loved reading every moment of it. And seeing Kat and Emrick become more than just acquaintances (even though it was a long journey) was well worth it.
Each of the scenes in this book pulled me back into the other novels, making me remember where they were brought up and the impact they had.
A trip to the past was never more enjoyable.nkt was amazing to see Kat and Emrick's beginnings. To see how much they supported and took care of each other through the years before they were even lovers.
While I loved the Emrick side, my favorite was Kat and Adrian 😍 their friendship is so solid. I loved seeing Adrian in action and see him stir the fire of justice in our sorceress.
Katerina has a ‘home’ again. Not what it was but what it is. She and Adrian are the epitome of a power couple, except he is a gay vampire and she loves Emrick. Emrick has both their backs in all scenarios. I am finally learning how their alliance began. Very unusual reading, very sensual occasionally, but not too graphic. Lots of action, gore and ‘keeping the world safe’ scenes. Really good pre-quel (in my opinion) to the first books I read. Looking forward to the next in this series.
This story:*sighs*, is beautifully and powerfully written. I’m not always a fan of prequels (after I’ve started a series), but this book blows Kat & Emmericks’ origin story out of the water. Krista’s beautiful prose is truly a work of art. Even if I could do this over again, I would still read this series in the order it was written. Their love story means so much more now that you’ve read about their love, but also their torment.
Wow. This book explains so much. How she dealt with the destruction of her family and village. How she worked so very hard to master her incredible powers. How she was befriended by a vampire and how the love of her life came into being. This book is so very powerful and emotional draining. It the best so far. Simply a must read. 100 percent action packed a d emotional charged

My heart has been craving this story since Krista introduced me to Kat... (& Emerick) in Fury of the Sorceress. I already loved Kat & Emerick "tragic" relationship in previous books but Power of the Sorceress just cements my absolute love for them. Kat is such a strong character, what's not to like. I highly recommend it!
The Power of the Sorceress - WOW! This is the prequel to the Sorceress series and it delivers! It explains so much, ( I don't want to give too much away since I know you will want to read this for yourself). Another book that I can "see" as I read which to me is the very best kind of read.
Kat & Emerick's Beginning This story gives a good back story to the series, as well as it provides an excellent prequel to the series! This fills in blanks, from the past, that I did not realize existed before. Wow, what an eye opener to everything! Great Novella! I Loved It!!! No Spoilers!
Loved this prequel which I picked up after book 1. It made me cry, laugh and wonder. Krista Walsh is a great writer and love Kat and her introductory story
If you've read any of the Immortal Sorceress books, you'll know the gist what this novella covers. You don't know all the details, though, and there are a few adventures we hadn't heard about before. This book fills all of those details in and more. I hurt for Katerina's losses, I feared for her during her fights, I longed with her for Emrick and for a place to belong, and I celebrated her victories with her.
The writing is so beautiful even when it's at its most painful, and it fits in wonderfully with the period the events take place in, the 12-13th century.
This may not be urban fantasy like the rest of the series, but it's a must read to fully understand Kat and her history.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. I'm also buying this book because I love this author!
