A big thank you to the author for an ARC of the collection! Below is my blurb!
DONNER PARTIES is an intricate blend of stories and essays of the strange, macabre, meditative, experimental, the cosmic and weird—unsettling in the way it makes the mundane horrific, while exploring the nebulous boundaries of what is and isn't considered horror, along with chilling journeys that sweep across eerie Canadian landscapes.
A wonderfully unsettling short story and essay collection.
This book is incredibly clever. I enjoyed the insightful essays, the disturbing and gross scenarios in some of the stories, and one story which was hilarious. There’s a fantastic running inside joke throughout. Of all the stories, Stuck was my favourite. It was atmospheric and a great look at bygone technology.
There were a couple of stand out stories in this collection but nothing that will stick with me. The title made me think that the stories would be quite twisted but I beg to differ. A calmer read than what I am used to.
I give this book 3.5 stars (rounded up to 4 because Goodreads is like that). The longer stories in the book are by far the best written. My favorite is “Donner Parties” for its simplistic concept and gore. I look forward to reading more by Cadieux in the future.
