A chosen family is exactly what it sounds family who you choose! At its core, a chosen family is made up of people who love, see, and support you for being your truest self. There are lots of people who can be a part of your chosen family, and you get to pick who makes you feel the safest and bravest.
My daughter is in GSA and her teacher wrote this beautiful book. I was surprised how touched I was. I initially purchased it for my kiddo, for the book signing and to support an amazing teacher who supports so many, including my kiddo. But when we read it, it brought up so much from my own childhood. I was adopted at 12, so I know what it’s like to have a chosen family and what it’s like to not fit in as a foster kid having no family. I also know what it’s like to be a mom and ally of LGBTQ people. I believe this is a much needed book for all to know it’s okay to have a chosen family and to be with the people who bring out and love the truest you.
A beautifully written book which highlights such an important and meaningful topic, especially for those within the queer community who have historically been reliant on members of their chosen family. A Kid’s Book About Chosen Family allows readers to explore the spectrum of what family and a strong support system can look like. The interactive portion of this book allows kids (and adults!) a chance to understand the importance of meaningful connections, and identify those in their life that support all parts of themselves. Highly recommended!!
With vibrant illustrations/word art and clear language, this book navigates the complex concept of chosen family with grace and authenticity. This gem highlights the importance of belonging and being loved and seen for who you are. One of the best parts of the book is the ten interactive questions that help identify people in our lives who make us feel the most like us!
This book is such a wonderful way to educate young folks on what family means and can be for different people. The conversations and questions this book highlights are imperative to a child’s growth and understanding of the relationships they’ll see in the world as they grow. Thank you Madi for sharing your beautiful work with the world!
