Dima Black might be the richest, most successful vampire in all of Borderlands, but all he wants to do is sew his quilts.
Dima enjoys a quiet life in his inner-city Remy apartment with his flatmates, a fridge full of B+, and his fluffy bunny slippers. At least, as quiet as things can be for a mind-reading vampire. He definitely doesn’t need some gorgeous telepathic human ex-athlete showing up and upside-downing his undeath. But when Dima is summoned to present the keynotes speech at the Bloodsucker’s in Business conference, that’s exactly what happens.
Disgraced former wingball star Casey ‘The Temper’ Freckleman wants only one thing, immortality. Luckily for Casey, his master has promised to turn him into a vampire if he can telepathically extract business secrets from the famous Dima Black. Should be easy, right? Casey’s never struggled with this sort of thing before. Unfortunately for Casey he can’t seem to break into Dima’s mind, and the vampire himself turns out to be the most distractingly distracting man alive … or undead.
By the Pint is the third book in the Fantasy Flatmates series but can be read as a standalone. The book features spicy content, grumpy sunshine, a vampire/human pairing, and a HEA
Jemma is a regular human author living in Bristol, UK, with her husband, daughters and an anxiety-ridden Brussels Griffon.
She writes funny, smutty, very British stories about humans falling in love with non humans. She loves dick jokes, foods where sugar is the first listed ingredient, and ignoring all her grown up problems.

This book was so freaking cute! But it was also funny, a bit angsty, spicy, heartbreaking and heartwarming. So many things!
Dima and Casey (and the side characters) were so well written and fantastically complicated characters. The chemistry between Dima and Casey was awesome. The witty banter was entertaining. There was also a redemption arc.
Such a great story. I read this as a standalone and had no issues at all. Highly recommend!
*** I received an ARC of this book from Gay Romance Reviews and this is my honest opinion. ***
In this essay, I will explore the age-old question: "Is it technically necrophilia if you have sex with a vampire?"
Jk....but not jk, let's talk about it. In the context of this book, I'm tempted to lean towards yes (especially with the temperature difference, and the thing with the ice bucket, which I very much enjoyed btw) but for some reason, boning-with-telekinesis makes me want to say no? Idk, it makes sense in my head. Also, is there a name for having a boning-with-telekinesis kink? Telekenisex? Telekinesophilia? Either way, I think I have one now, CAUSE THAT SCENE IN THE BACKSEAT OF THE CAR?
Dima and Casey are FUCKING ADORABLE. The sexual tension/chemistry was finger lickin' good and I especially enjoyed their playful banter. I would call their dynamic Grumpy/Sunshine but, like, fuckin' HELLO!? VAMPIRES!! So Grumpy/Moonshine? Grumpy/Thousand-Watt-Lightbulb? I'm having so many tangential thoughts today, but YOU GET IT.
The plot did NOT go where I was expecting it to go and it was such a pleasant surprise (especially all the stuff with Killian). I anticipated a steady, rom-com-y story, but really, it was a rollercoaster of emotions.
I didn't read the first two books in the series (am slut 4 MM), but meeting the other couples/characters genuinely peaked my interest enough that I might just come back to them one day, which is saying a lot.
I am zero percent surprised that an adored this book because it was Dima’s book, and what’s not to love about him?? Finally seeing inside his mind was an absolute treat. Casey was a little shit and needed his growth arc so much. He was selfish to the extreme, but had some understandable reasons for being the way he was. Their banter and chemistry was on point. This was a not often seen take on the grumpy sunshine trope, with the grumpy MC having a hair trigger temper on top of never being super happy. The threat of impending permanent memory loss was intense AF and I kept flip flopping how I thought everything was gonna turn out. There was all the relationship angst but the overall vibe was pretty cozy. NGL though, I would def break up this couple to keep Dima for me. Sorry Casey.
Spice: 4.5/5

I did not expect to cry at this book, but oh my god Dima broke my heart!!!!
Dima is the happiest, sunshine vampire ever and I loved every minute of his story! I loved how he's obsessed with quilting too and it's motivated me to get on with trying to do it myself.
I didn't realise this was set in the same story universe as the mythical mishaps series, so it was a nice surprise to know that I already had an idea of the realms and cities. I also liked how detailed the turning process of becoming a vampire was, and that they live an actual nocturnal life, rather than have workarounds for sunlight.
Killian was also really funny, even though he was technically the bad guy you couldn't help but find him so endearing and likeable! I hope we get to see more of him in future.
Everyone needs to read about how Dima Black is the sweetest cutest most selfless vampire daddy to ever be written. With his smiles, his cloaks, his quilts and his never-ending love for Casey. I need everyone to have their heart broken by this beautiful love story.
"Don't run from your feelings. I see them, and they are beautiful."
Well this was a roller coaster of emotional damage. But in the best way. Jemma took my heart, broke it into little pieces, and then gently put it back together. And every tear was worth it. This was the perfect story and HEA for Dima. I don't think Jemma could have written it better. I'm so glad I read the other books and got so invested in the characters because that attachment to them was a big part of all the feels. Even the small glimpses we got of the others felt big and emotional.
I knew I would love this book because I really enjoyed Dima's personality and goofy nature in the first two books. And this one did not disappoint. The banter was perfection. And yet again...Jemma has the best nicknames.
Can't wait for Mal's book! I need to know all his secrets!
I adored this book! This is the third book that I have read in the Fantasy Flatmates Series and I think it is my favorite. I absolutely love Dima - I loved him before and now I love him even more!! I’m so happy we finally got to read his story and get inside his head. This book had a bit of everything that I want from a rom-com. The banter was on point, the love story was so sweet, and the spice was perfect. I describe these books as a cozy fantasy, hallmark with spice vibe. Highly recommend!!
This was my first read by Jemma Croft and what a ride it was. The banter and jokes in this book had me giggling like a kid. It has such silly moments. I even laughed at the copyright page! I was not sure what I was in for going into this book! I was crying halfway through. This book broke my heart but then fixed it (definitely a HEA!). Dima is a loveable character, and I see why everyone seems to be simping for him. He is the sweetest little quilting Vampire Daddy. His heart is so big, and it beats for Casey ♥ I didn't care for Casey at first-he is a butthead, but he grew on me. He is perfect with Dima, reading them fall in love was like watching the coziest vampire rom-com. I wasn't expecting this book to make me feel so much! The end of the book was so many things. Heartbreaking and sweet but also funny! I cried at scenes where the characters were getting it on and laughing during their heart-to-hearts. I was all over the place. I can't say enough about how much I loved it.
The spice in this was GOOD. It was a lot of teasing and longing, but *WHEW* it got hot (see the quotes :P )
What We Do in the Shadows meets swoon-worthy romcom ❤
4.5/5 Overall Rating 3/5 Spice Level
Jemma is a master of balancing comedy, unique world-building, and emotion in By the Pint! This is the first book I've read from the author and I am thoroughly convinced to go back and read the rest of the Fantasy Flatmates series.
The relationship at center in this book is one of mutual pining, complication, and love prevailing. Both Dima and Casey are put through quite the rollercoaster of emotion in this story and I was at the edge of my seat for so much of it. All I will say is that they are perfect for each other and I was rooting for them with every ounce of my being.
This book is perfect for fans of: -MM Romance -Grumpy x sunshine -Vampire x human -Spicy scenes -Banter and absurd humor
It's so so so so good! Dima is a sweet, ray of sunshine, just quilting away, but he's also lonely. And Casey is a dick, but in the BEST way! They vibe with each other right from the start, and it's incredible. Casey thinks he's holding all the strings, and is there to get what he needs from Dima to fulfil his life long goal of becoming a vampire. But nothing goes the way he expects right from the start, and Dima is nothing like he expected (he's better - because obviously). The plot is incredible, there are so many interconnected stories that are slowly revealed, the story is light hearted, angsty and funny, but it's also so sad! I was bawling my eyes out. I jumped right into this book without reading what came before and it flowed really nicely, but I'm definitely going to go back and read the others in the series because I fell in love with his flatmates (Joey was so sweet). Casey's storyline was so well developed, and he really is a dick, Dima knows but he loves it and finds it hilarious. The heat and tension between them is perfect. I will read this book again, just to be in Dimas head and orbit and for the ending, because it was badass. Loved every moment. Can't wait for what comes next!!
Just when I thought I couldn't love Jemma's books anymore than I already do, she goes and releases this heart-wrenching yet altogether brilliant story.
God I love Dima so much and I loved Casey too. Together they were perfect. And I loved their story so much. God. So so brilliant
Funny charming emotional and more. Croft is one of my new favourite authors
I laughed, I gasped, and I teared up. Dima and Casey were so incredibly sweet and perfectly matched. The two goofballs made me laugh with their flirty antics, and the smutty scenes were perfection in how it balanced sweetness and spice. Even though this story was a bit heavier on the angst compared to the two previous books in the series, there were still enough laughs and heartwarming found family moments.
The author tore my heart into pieces and then sewed it back together again. And I loved it.
This was my first book by this author and I have to say — it was a perfect book to be introduced with. By The Pint was hilarious, swoon worthy and gave me //all// the hurt feels as well with some fantastic writing by the author. If an adorable vampire getting his well deserved happy ending with a grumpy human is your idea of fun - this one is for you.
I really enjoyed this story. The writing was very refreshing, had an upbeat tone to it, and it's been a while since I read something with humour with it.
“do you dream of me? oh moonflower, you are my dream.”
I cannot begin to explain how much I loved this book with its funny, spicy, heartwarming, heartbreaking, and achingly sweet moments but I will try!
A sunshine vampire (Dima) falls in love almost immediately with a grumpy human (Casey) who wants to be a vampire. Already an excellent concept. These characters are written so well and have so much depth to them. Even the notable side characters are funny and interesting to read about. (Side note: Nina is my GURLLL.) There was so much good spice and angst my cup will be filled for days! I appreciate the character development for a certain vampire it made me scream and cry. I loved the nicknames and such a hilarious choice to make like 50% of the vampire characters named Vlad. I seriously loved everything about this book. I will absolutely be reading the other books in this series. In Jemma we trust!
**I was provided an ARC by the author. My opinions are my own. Thank you!
Dima Black is a keynote speaker at a vampire conference, hosted by vampire clan The Damnable Descendants, in a big, bloody - pun intended - castle. Dreadmourne castle.
Telepathic vampires, upon discovery, are conscripted to service by the Assembly of the Undead, with no choice or freedom. So, of course Dima keeps his secret safe.
Decades ago he founded, then sold, a blood alcohol brewery called Blooze. As attacking humans results in 'termination', different varieties of blood can be bought from the supermarket - think Tru Blood in the Sookie Stackhouse books.
Dima is also Fang Magazine’s most successful vampire entrepreneur, and rear of the year for a Quilter's Magazine. Yes, he quilts.
During his keynote speech, then in the traders booth, he senses another telepath, which shouldn't be possible. He knows the only other vampire with those talents is Killian, his estranged blood-brother, whom he'd not seen in centuries.
He's shocked to discover the telepath is a human familiar, Casey, and is in fact Killian's familiar.
Casey has only one goal - immortality - and he has been promised a turning if he can extract all of Dima's financial secrets.
Having attended many work conferences, conventions and academic conferences, I love the nods to the banality and predictably of such events. And the mix of humour, every day life and ... well, supernatural creatures.
The little jabs by the author about the use of AI are also priceless humour.
The juxtaposition of the mundane mixed with the bloodbath and vampires making merry, much more than merry actually, creates a wonderful blend of cosy and sexy.
The flatmates themselves and the dynamic between them all is very much found family and full of quirky personalities. Goldie in particular is great fun.
As for Dima, he's adorable. He might Dom in the bedroom - even with a larger muscled human - but he's sweet, funny, wears bunny slippers, quilts, and draws the cutest little stick figure illustrations in lovely dovey notes.
And though Casey doesn't want a relationship, and Dima is worried of heartbreak, as they journey together through Casey's training in shielding his mind, they become much closer and love blossoms.
Never mind the intense chemistry between them.
It's a perfect grumpy/sunshine relationship with a lonely vampire and a grumpy familiar.
This book was so fun! It’s full of vampires who don’t act like typical vampires (our MC Dima loves quilting and hot tubs) and is a really sweet, funny, emotional story of love against all odds. It was also pretty complex, with a number of storylines interwoven throughout. Although this is book 3 in the ‘fantasy flatmates’ series, I read it as a standalone and it made perfect sense to me :)
Casey Freckleman is an ex-professional Wingball player and a vampire’s familiar. When his master, Killian, sends him to meet entrepreneur Dima Black to mine him for business secrets, Casey jumps at the chance to meet the elusive mogul in exchange for Killian FINALLY turning Casey into a vampire. But when he meets him, Casey realises he’s deeply in trouble… Dima is nothing like he imagined - he’s sweet, smart, wears bunny slippers unironically and loves quilting. He loves quilting A LOT… and Casey would know, because he’s a rare telepathic human who can read minds and all he’s getting from Dima is quilts! Because, unknown to Casey, Dima is a secret telepath too…
This story was so emotional - one of the main vampire ‘downsides’ is you lose all your memories when you turn, and Casey struggles with his lifelong dream to become a vampire and the reality that it would mean he loses Dima. The HEA in this book was incredibly hard-won (but there is a beautiful HEA) and I just thought the development between the two characters was wonderful!
Read By The Pint for: ✨ Vampire x human ✨ Grumpy x Sunshine ✨ Rom-com with deep emotional elements ✨ Found family ✨ Great world-building & vamp politics ✨ Complex storyline ✨ So much quilting trivia ✨ Creating vampire nudes via AI
Wow! This book! This book was so fantastic I can’t even find the words! Their relationship was incredible, and I love how they have flaws but don’t try to change each other, and fall in love with who the other person is as they come. The world building got so much more intense, and it had great vampire lore. The whole story was amazing from start to finish. I read it in one day, which is so crazy for my ADHD brain to achieve. There were so many incredible twists! And as always she had an amazing ending! The spicy scenes were great and her use of words was just amazing! I already loved Dima from the other books, but learning so much more about him made me adore him even more. Jemma did a fantastic job of going into detail about what makes the characters who they are. From their past experiences and their views on life/people/and themselves. Everything fit together so perfectly it made the characters feel so real. Thank you to the author for making my day, and giving me something to smile about whenever I think about your characters!
This might be my favorite take on grumpy/sunshine. It was more rigid/particular instead of grumpy. And sunshine that supported and understood. Sunshine that just couldn’t stop smiling too! Casey was determined to achieve and be the best at everything. He would use his skills to his every advantage. Dima was sweet, caring and alone. The two of them together made for a beautiful story. They made me laugh, a lot. I sobbed, also a lot.
My heart has been quilted back together with pieces of this story. The growth of Casey and even Killian. Ugh, I’m so glad to have gotten to read this book! I really want to start a Stitch 'n' Bitch club too!
I learned a new stain removal hack. Unexpected tidbit!
I love that Jemma included Casey’s ticket that Dima drew🖤 Huge, kudos to Jemma for the way she did the trigger warnings that could be spoilers. I normally skip over the warnings. But if they are there my eyeballs betray me. She nested them into a list of colors and I was able to gloss right past them. I did go back and look at the end. If I had read them before the story I would’ve definitely had an element spoiled. I also loved her acceptance of an oil miniature or illustration for evidence.
4.75⭐️ An absolutely delightful human/vampire romance! Though there are technically some heavy themes, especially at the end, this book feels fun and lighthearted. The characters really feel like soulmates 🥹
Dima is vampire who (secretly) has telepathic and telekinetic abilities. His life revolves around quilting and being rich and reclusive, until he meets Casey. Casey is a haughty human ex-athlete with ulterior motives, and Dima is obsessed with him from the jump.
This book has so many laugh out loud moments. The world is modern with supernatural creatures. It feels so immersive without over-explanation. The characters are excellent. This book can be read as a stand alone no problem, even though it’s technically book 3 in a series.
I’m super impressed with this author’s writing! ❤️
Read as a standalone had no issues following the story without reading previous installments. It was a fun read from start to finish full of banter and all the emotions. I wasn't sure what I expected, but I was pleasantly surprised by the depth of it all. The storyline keeps you hooked from start to finish and hope that these two find a way to make this relationship work even when you aren't always sure it can. I will be checking out previous installments to see how it affects this plot.
While I did lose a bit of interest in the middle – I would have preferred to see a couple less sex scenes even though they were well-written – I really enjoyed this book as a whole. I liked both characters, especially Dima with his bunny slippers and love of quilting, and I felt like their personalities were very complementary. I also appreciated all the puns and poking fun at vampire stereotypes.
Wow! What an incredible Vampire Story! It had me wanting more by the end! It had some adventure, and some spicy moments! Amazing stuff! Wonderful writer!
