Scars and Stripes #2

The Darkness Within

Rate this book
You can’t give your heart away until you first learn to love yourself.

Nash

A mission gone sideways. My world turned upside down on a dime.

Held prisoner in the dark tunnels below ground, cut off from the world, I was hanging onto life by a thread. Wanting to end my suffering, but afraid to let go.

And then I was rescued. Dragged into the light. My first breath of freedom in twenty-two days. But I was still trapped in my nightmare, inside my head.

A prisoner of war.

Brewer

His mind may be broken, but his soul is still intact, and it’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. As his sponsor, I promised to help him find his way, to show him how to love himself again. I'm breaking all the rules of recovery by falling in love with him. But when you find the person you’re meant to spend the rest of your life with, you don’t want to waste another day apart.

The Darkness Within is the second book in the Scars and Stripes Trilogy. This hurt/ comfort MM romance deals with heavy topics such as addiction, mental health, PTSD, and a forbidden love that defies all the rules. A high-angst story that has a hard-earned HEA and cameos from Proof of Life.

“Don’t look too closely. It’s dark inside there.”
“Nah, you just need someone to shine a bright light so you can find your way through the darkness within.”

Extra hearts for Leif and Valor and Nash’s obsessive care for them both. ♡♡♡

It’s official, I’m a fan of Raquel Riley, I love her writing and the amazing stories she kindly shares with us. I’m a sobbing mess after reading this, beautiful story, and beautiful characters.

My favorites are still Brandt and West but Brewer and Nash are just as special and will forever keep them in my heart.

So excited for Riggs book next, and hopefully Mandy’s after that?

I absofuckinlutely loved Nash and Brewer! This was light, pure light ❤️

This is the kind of book that opens your eyes… that shows you the world is so full of hate and horror, but at the same time can be light and hopeful, and the balance is restored.

There’s so much trauma and heartbreak, but the way these two man find each other, support each other and together find a way through the darkness was so heartfelt and beautiful 😍 the patience, the friendship, the love, it touches the reader. It touched me!

The balance between hurt and comfort is so good, the way they get to their so deserved HEA was a beautiful road, full of sacrifice but most of all resilience and acceptance! This has some of the most intimate sex scenes I’ve ever read… so powerful and explosive, with great meaning to both MC. 🥵🥹 and so so hot!

War traumas will live with you forever… they are a part of you, they found a way to be happy together and embrace them, never forget! True warriors 🖤 I don’t even believe that much in the army and giving your life like they do, but I believe in Nash and Brewer🥹

This series! This book! The tears, the laughs, the hotness, ugh, it's so freaking good! So emotional, heartbreaking, and heartwarming, it's all the feels! I just love all the characters, side and main, they're just so wonderful. Especially Mandy, there's just something so special about him! Not to mention this book was beautifully written, I was captivated right from the start, and that stayed true the whole way through. I absolutely loved Brewer and Nash's story. It was a fantastic addition to the series, and I can't wait for more!

Just reread via audio and loved it! Fantastic narration, Lance West and Curtis Michael Holland nailed this performance!

A forbidden MM military romance that takes through heartbreaking trauma & a healing journey! It has lows, highs, emotions, so many tears, pining, beautiful love & connections.
I loved Nash & Brewer, devoured my #ARC in around 6hrs.

Nash has been through immense trauma as a prisoner of war 🥺. Tortured, held captive, lost someone dear. Now he feels haunted by it all, aimless, guilty. He struggles with PTSD, addiction. Beneath it tho, he's sweet with a dry humor. Loved his obsessive care for Leif & Valor! Brewer came into his life as a spark of light.

Brewer is a recovery addict himself. He's also a therapist. He's protective, caring. I loved to see it towards Nash, B's tough love 🤭. He understands N's struggles deeply, becomes someone N deeply trusts & relies on, plus roomies! Attraction sparks, but as N's sponser & therapist, B can't let himself fall, could he?

At heart it's a story of healing & love. It's slowburn, with lots of pining & longing, it's so fun haha. When they get together at last, it's hot 🔥. We also met a lot of new characters, they're all great. Of course, we see the Bitches with Stitches too! So fun & cute ❤️.

While I was ok with believing in a higher power for hope bit, but the amount of "God" talk felt too much 🤷. I did like who Nash chose as his! Excited for 3rd book, I hope there's more than 3 books tho lol.

A quote I resonated with:
“What was the point of surviving if I’m afraid to live?”

Pierwsze ok. 30% książki było dewastujące. Trudne, mroczne, depresyjne, intensywne.

Od momentu uwolnienia do momentu, kiedy Nash spotyka Brewera, mija jakieś kilka miesięcy, z czego Nash przynajmniej połowę spędził w szpitalach. Jasne, łykał prochy jak cukierki, bo demony, które go prześladowały, były naprawdę mocarne, a on je chciał jakoś uciszyć. Resztę leczą Anonimowi Narkomani, Brewer i Bóg...

I właśnie - to kolejny problem - oczywiście MÓJ problem.

“And how did the universe prove to you that God doesn’t exist?”
“Because if He were real, He wouldn’t have let my best friend die so terribly.”
My heart sinks to the bottom of my stomach. I can’t refute the unfairness of that. “God took my best friend as well. It doesn’t mean He doesn’t exist.”
“Then why would He do that to me and to Violet and her now deceased husband? Why does He hurt innocent people? Good people? For what purpose?”
“I can’t answer that for Him. But I do know that He has a purpose for everything. Then again, you don’t have to believe in God as your higher power. Many recovering addicts don’t. You just have to believe in something greater than yourself, some force or entity, or something spiritual, just so that you know you’re not in control of your own destiny.”
“Who says I’m not?” Even in the darkness, I can see his eyes twinkling. He’s fucking with me.
“Let go and let God, that’s my motto.”

* * * * * * *

“Shh. I’m here. You’re not alone anymore. You’ll never be alone again. I know you’re angry with God. You feel like he stole something precious from you, that he cheated you somehow, cheated Victor Gutierrez, but you’re only hurting yourself if you don’t ask Him for help. Hasn’t He forgiven you every time you fucked up? Why can’t you forgive Him?”
His words resonate within me, but it’s not that simple. “It’s not supposed to work that way. He’s supposed to be better than me. God doesn’t make mistakes. That’s what I was taught in Sunday school.”
“I was taught a lot of things that don’t make sense to me now, and nobody is going to tell me what is right and wrong for me. Your relationship with Him can be whatever you want it to be, whatever makes you feel comfortable. Don’t let anyone dictate what you believe.”

To insta - połączenie, fascynacja, zauroczenie, pociąg fizyczny.

The Foreword already made me cry!

If you wonder how to write a heavy-topic story and keep it manageable and enjoyable to read, take a look at this piece of work. Nicely cut in clear pieces, enough attention to details you wondered about, but not hanging on them. The timeline, build-up, and the whole story were absolutely brilliantly done!

Sergeant Nashville Sommers has been through so much trauma, his mission in Afghanistan went wrong, he was taken hostage, kept underground for weeks by the enemy, tortured, and came to a point of giving up. Thank goodness he was rescued.

What’s left of him as a POW is just a ghost. Hospitalized with medication. He feels just as lonely and solitude as when he was captured, with his mind in the darkness.

Bow to the people who won’t let him slip away. One of them is Brewer Marx, a therapist, seen and been through enough shit on his own, he takes Nash with him to his Serenity House and is determined to get him on his feet again.

“You are your own worst enemy. Nobody can hate you more than you hate yourself.”

Brewer is a recovering addict himself, Nash’s sponsor, he has all the feels for Nash, and it’s mutual.
But first Nash has to quit all the toxicity, admit he’s an addict, heal and get stronger.

“I’m trying,” “Try harder.”

Climbing up from a deep dark place is hard work. Brewer’s determination is soothing to Nash.
Nash needs Brewer as his next breath, he wants more and knows Brewer feels the same.
Even though Brewer can’t cross the line, the pull of attraction is strong. Watch them!

“Surrender”

And yes! We meet the Bitches with Stitches group again!

Wonderful to read a completely different story within the same world.
To say it’s an easy read would be a lie, but it’s really written in a manageable way, the author did a wonderful job. The emotions ran high (or better to say deep), so palpable, I shivered, I cried and laughed with them.
Not that I looked for it, but I didn’t experience anything that needed improvement.

Please read the trigger warnings, there are heavy topics.

The Scars and Stripes second book is amazing.

The writing is excellent and the the development of the characters is very well described.

Please , check the TW list.

Nash is a military who during a mission is captured and held prisoner with his best friend. When they manage to rescue him, his physical and mental state is the worst possible.
Brewer is a therapist and a recovered addict. Between them, the sparks of atraccion they see each other from almost the beginning, but it's not the best time to start something romantic with anyone.

The book is a story of overcoming and surrender.

I see another possible couple , I hope they get their book, because one of them deserves the whole world. (cof, cof, Mandy , cof, cof)

I did not enjoy (if one can ever enjoy such themes) this book as much.
The Christian bit pissed me off and it felt too much like Nash had to start believing in the something above for the program to work. Nope.
Too many characters made it hard to keep track of who's who. I know there are more books to come but a more closed circle would have worked better.
The couple was a bit too insta for my liking and it did not feel organic even if the physical side did take some time. And I was ok with them dating even if Brewer was his sponsor. But at some point I think it's mentioned that he's also his therapist? Now, that's just plain wrong and unethical.
And I felt sorry for the cat. Even ragdolls who love being lap cats are not comfortable/happy with being carried around in a sling like that all the time. Put the cat down and let them come to you when they want, please.

Raquel Riley can write haunted and emotional stories like nobody's business.
She also creates the strongest and most amazing characters (even though the characters sometimes need the whole book to acknowledge their strength).
Can't wait to read Riggs story :-)

A story dealing with addiction and taking the first steps toward recovery, told mainly from the pov of a new addict and, later on, a newly recovering addict.

Nash had been through a lot, more than any person should have to live through. His story is told little by little until the entire horror of what he endured is revealed. It doesn't take the whole book or even half of it to learn what happened so it's not that big secret that we have to keep guessing about. I appreciated that his story was revealed pretty early on and I didn't have to constantly wonder about what had happened. After all, there were countless other things to keep the story going and interesting.

Brewer is a recovering addict as well and he has been for twelve years. When the two meet there's undeniable attraction between them but Nash hasn't even admitted yet that he has a problem so Brewer decides to take Nash unter his wing and help him in his path to recovery instead of pursue him.

The events take place over several months and Nash goes through a lot of changes during that time.

The side characters are colorful and interesting and I hope a few of them will get their own stories. At least it seemed like there was more to them but I think this series is supposed to be just three books so I don't know if they'll all get their own books.

There are some heavy scenes, but that's to be expected considering the themes of the story. However, it's not all dark, there are also many light scenes to offset the dark ones. They're mainly ones where one or more side characters participate.

I read this one as a standalone and I didn't have a problem with following along to the story, but I might go back and read the first book as well just to see more of the side characters.

4.5⭐️

This book and this series are so good. It’s emotionally very hard to read but also satisfying because they work through it and get a good ending and not just as a couple but individually.

There are some morally grey areas in the book that would probably not happen quite so easily for the characters in real life, but I’m going to be honest and say I’ve read worse and it didn’t bother me at all. It’s a story, not real life.

The absolute rawness coming from Nash during his flashbacks and in his present while processing the world he now finds himself in is so well written.

Their relationship is kind of love at first sight, and because Brewer is Nash’s sponsor and therapist, they ‘try’ to stay apart, but their need for each other, not just in love but in survival, I guess especially for Nash, is too powerful to keep them apart, and they don’t succeed in being professional.

I love all the characters. Even the side characters bring loads to the story and I love Mandy there’s just something special about him. I hope he has his story somewhere maybe with Tex?

It’s just a really raw, emotional story with loss and love and new-found family. I really enjoyed it .

This is the second book in the Scars and Stripes trilogy and this was another well written and emotional story that I couldn't put down. Nash survived 22 days being held hostage with his best friend who sadly died during this time. It has left me with lots of issues. He becomes addicted to painkillers. He becomes friendly with his neighbour who takes him to the Balls therapy group and he meets Brewer who has been through his own traumas but now works as a counsellor. After Nash has a bad episode Brewer takes him and helps him, however it's clear they are attracted to each other and they do try and fight but it doesn't take them long to give in. Their story comes with ups and downs and what a hard fought hea. Another great story by Raquel.

These books are books that will last a lifetime in my memory. The MC’s in this book are so different than Proof of Life but just as lovable. The side characters bring so much energy to the story that they are must. I am in awe! Truly in awe of this book. I hate to do spoilers so here’s my epic review…

Another beautiful book after West and Brandt.

Nash is in a very dark place after what he went through. He is struggling to stay afloat and is angry at the world. He is slowly drowning and doesn’t believe that he deserves anything good.

Brewer is a therapist and an addict in recovery. He becomes Nash’s sponsor because he wants to help the man who is a shell of his former self, but also fears that their relationship might end in ruins if Nash relapses. He is afraid of what that might do to him.

This was a beautiful story about the power of love, the importance of friendship and support and the long way to recovery. It was empowering and hard and sad and so lovely.❤️

You will cry and laugh through tears and wish with your whole heart that these two men find their HEA. It was well fought and well deserved!

This book includes a kitten named Valor, a plant named Leif and the meddling b*tches with stitches. Although it made me sob quite a bit, it also healed me so well. Nash stole my heart and I found myself begging for him to be okay. Brewer was there, every step of the way.🥹

What I loved was the fact that all of Nash’s problems weren’t magically resolved after getting with Brewer. He had to keep fighting, keep surrendering and keep being brave💜and brave, he was!

Read this book if you want your heart ripped out and then put back together😭

I kindly received an ARC for an honest opinion!

another beautiful story from Raquel Riley! this book was definitely DARKER than the first and of course had me all up in my feels. Nash went through hell and back and those flash backs to him being held captive were rough and heartbreaking but with the help and patience of the sweet baby angel face Brewer, he became the best man he could be and it was so amazing to watch happen. and the chemistry between Nash and Brewer was incredible and even though it was one of the slowest burns i’ve read it was all so worth! this series is so powerful and so beautifully written you just want more. i love it so much! i can’t wait for the next book 😩🖤

Brewer, Brewer, Brewer Marx. You have my heart and soul. This book was incredible. Check TW because oh my gosh, the pain of reading Nash’s time as a POW is not for the faint of heart. The slow burn of this relationship was exquisite… bed sharing… hurt/comfort… yes!!! Their bond and the way they connected and slowly shifted from strangers to acquaintances to sponsor/sponsee to EVERYTHING was amazing. This couple was SO well written. I already miss them and their chemistry - not even talking about sexual chemistry (although that is indeed 🔥 too)! I hope you fall in love with my favorite boys too. 🫶

DNFing this at 35% - the story is very compelling and nicely executed but the dialogue is very robotics and there are a lot of mentions of God which is a slight trigger for me (completely my fault and not this book, i should have expected that when AA was mentioned). putting this down for now.

'I love you. I love you with all of my heart. The heart that you saved, the heart that you pieced back together with duct tape and superglue, it belongs to you.'

I wasn't sure how Raquel Riley could surpass West and Brandt’s story in Proof of Life, but my god, she has done it in spades with The Darkness Within, book 2 in the Scars and Stripes Trilogy (but really, can we leave it at 3? All these Bitches need their stories told!)

The Darkness Within is Sergeant Nash Sommers and Brewer Marx's story.

Nash is deployed overseas when he and his best friend, Victor Gutierrez are taken prisoner of war and held captive for a horrifying 22 days.

Nash is physically and mentally destroyed and is struggling when he returns Stateside.

And that's where he meets Brewer Marx, a former soldier who has recovered from his own trauma and demons, and is now a therapist, dedicating himself to helping others suffering with PTS and addiction.

And what follows is the most poignant, heartbreaking and heartwarmingly beautiful love story.

Nash Sommers. Nashville Sommers. Sergeant Nashville Aiden Sommers is my hero. This man has been to literal hell and back in The Darkness Within.

Don't attempt to read this book without the biggest box of tissues beside you - you have been warned!

I cried so many tears for this man - and by extension, Gutierrez 😭 I don't think I'll ever not cry for Victor.

Despite the deep topics and heartbreak, Raquel Riley has perfectly interwoven moments of levity. There's humour; the heartwarming presence of the Bitches with Stitches crew provide that. Everyone at BALLS, and then there's the new gang... the outlandish Tex, the hooters boy 😆, Miles, and Nacho, the cook who takes care of Brewer's unit at their home, Serenity House.

This is a slow burn, but Raquel manages to still make so damn sexy... that scene with Brewer and Nash talking through Nash's fantasy visualisation was delicious!

But the biggest themes of this book are heart, courage, sacrifice, love, acceptance, and forgiveness.

Nash has a long road to forgive himself.

But with Brewer's help, he can move forward and learn to live again.

This is a story of heartache, but it's also a story of hope. Of continuing on when life throws the worst at you.

“We’re all just lost soldiers looking for our unit."

The bravery of these men astounds me. And the love the Brewer and Nash have for each other is so beautiful. It's soul-deep and utterly perfect.

"How could I not fall in love with him when everything about him convinced me that he was the other half of my soul. That God put him here, in my way, just for me. For me, and for him.”

Brewer, you are a war hero and a survivor in your own right. And you dedicate yourself to helping other's with addiction. You deserve to have found the love of your life.

Nash. You've had such a long, difficult journey. You survived captivity, you honoured your best friend and kept your promise: you got him back home. You deserve to live, and love, and thrive. The sun did come out, Nash. Enjoy your future with Brewer.

“You make me fly. Loving you, that’s what gives me wings.”

You can’t give your heart away until you first learn to love yourself.

Nash was held in captivity on the other side of the world, doing what he could to take care of his buddy and stay alive. Returning home? That’s when another fight came for him, the fight for his life.
Brewer loves helping veterans and addicts get their lives back, he was one of them. When it comes to helping Nash, he knows he’s going to have his work cut out for him, and make sure his heart is in the right place.

Oh goodness. Nash. I can’t even begin to imagine the hell he went through, the torture. And then coming home, he still has those terrible and terrifying memories and nightmares to live with. I don’t blame him one bit for trying to help his head maybe forget for a short time. But is that was G would have wanted for him?

Brewer is such a good man. I don’t know how else to word it, but that’s exactly what he is. He’s had his fair share of horrible experiences, and the fact that he uses that to help others in the same boat is nothing short of amazing.

I loved these two together. I was nervous that maybe they shouldn’t have been so close so soon, but looking back, I realize they were exactly what the other man needed. Their love story was messy, emotional, and heartbreaking. But it was also wondrous, beautiful, and REAL.

I do not want to say goodbye to this world, especially the Bitches. At the same time, I know they will all end up in a good place and they will always find each other in the darkness.

Have some beer and wings for me, Bitches!!

These two men have been ravaged by war, leaving them broken, defeated, lost, like their lives aren’t worth living anymore. They feel their only solace from the never ending movie reel inside their heads can be found at the bottom of a bottle or pill container. They think they are alone, that no one understands what they’ve been through and the journey they have yet to go through. This is where BALLS comes in. Beyond The Army: Legion of Love ( get your mind out of the gutters 🤭😉) they help bring vets together (amongst other things, I can’t give everything away) and in those walls they realize that they aren’t alone that there are others out their that know what they are going through and aren’t going to let them go through it alone. This book is about perseverance, learning to love yourself, overcoming your demons, the scene of community and belonging. This one will hit you hard with emotions but it’s worth feeling every one of them.

✨✨If you need a good cry, a book to get into your feels this is the one. This one has tons of triggers, please please read them before diving in, this is a heavy but beautiful story. ✨✨

This book just leaves you feeling like you are a better person for going through this journey with Nash & Brewer. Nash has gone to hell and back and is struggling to find his new place. When he hits his lowest, he is fortunate enough to have Mandy and the rest of the BALLS boys and, in particular the Bitches with Stiches men who immediately take him as one of their own and with humor and heart help him take the steps needed for his recovery. Brewer has a similar yet different past, so he gets what Nash needs to succeed even when he wants to hold him up and make it easier. But recovery is not about the easy way it's the long fought out road that has switchbacks, and if you keep fighting, it will all turn as you need to be able to move forward. These men have a connection you feel in your soul where they will be the others' solace and the tough love when needed. Truly an amazing work, the pain of this journey was more than worth it to see these men have their version of a hea.

Second part in this impressive series, really very different from the first book but with the same real impact. The two MCs were both struggling with narcotic addiction directly as a result of unimaginable trauma. Brewer had been sober for some years, the main focus of the story was Nash - including graphic descriptions of what happened to him and what his mind did to try to cope. The Bitches were their amazing supportive and truly funny selves, and the found family has grown more to include a group of recovering addicts (Tex was especially sweet). Really looking forward to the next.

22 Days Later

For 22 days Nash sat in the filth starved and beaten with only one thing on his mind to get his best friend Victor back home .
Half starved and a shattered femur he put his hunger and pain aside to be there for Victor who was in a much worse state than he was he held him close and he chased the rats away from him , he couldn’t give in or Victor would never never get home.
When he is saved and taken home things start to get worse as he can’t accept he failed and starts to abuse his medications but the day he meets Brewer his therapist things look a little brighter .
As the days turn into months he gets closer to Brewer but neither taking the next step for over 10 months. Although it was a slow build up between Nash and Brewer the anticipation was delicious .
He had the support of the B!itches with Stitches and as usual their antics made me laugh out loud and the guys especially Tex from Serenity House where he’s living.
I don’t cry at books but omg did my heart hurt so much for Nash and what he had to endure and how he thought himself not worthy.
When Nash loves he loves hard be it Man , Woman , Animal or inanimate object ( I don’t want to spoil it by saying anymore )
It was great catching up with the B!tches with Stitches again and as usual the
banter had me laughing and when Nash needed them most they were all there for him.
As with book one this book was perfect and i’m really looking forward to reading Riggs story.

When I read this parts of it hard but listening to it intensified those parts exponentially to the point I felt a stray tear trying to escape several times.
Once again Lance West, Curtis Michael Holland nailed the narration and brought the characters and their emotions to life.

Brewer and Nash ❤️
( Leif and Valor)

5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

What can I say, this book, this series is simply phenomenal.

Brewer and Nash's story was heavy hitting, it was one of tragedy, fear, addiction and pain. As the relationship progresses it becomes about forgiveness, learning to love yourself again and healing. Their relationship build was perfection, it was so touching to read. You will cry, you will laugh and you will cry some more. The sweet bits were swoon worthy and the spicy times were 🔥. The most beautiful thing about this story is that throughout all that heavy you have a cast of characters that add light, love and so much humor to this incredibly gut wrenching story.

Raquel Riley has crafted an unforgettable universe with amazing characters and a found family that you will never forget. Their stories will quite literally break your heart and slowly stitch it back together ❤️ #BALLS & BITCHES. This book is a must read and I 100% recommend. I can't wait for the next in this series. I need so much more from all of these characters that I've come to love.

* I received an ARC from this author, this is my open and honest review *

This was so absolutely beautiful! If you are not breathless and heart wrenched I would be surprised! This story like Proof Of Life will gut you and make you feel so much! I was moved to tears a few times!

Raquel Riley knows how to give you all the moments that will give you highs and lows. This one made me laugh too! The guys antics were priceless!

Five stars isn’t enough!

There were a few flashbacks where Nash is in captivity and having to deal with his friend being shot.
Nash is addicted to pills and booze and is having a hard time getting back into civillian life.
He meets Brewer and is also introduced to the Bitches, who play quite a big part in the book.
We are introduced to Nash's housemates in the halfway house and I hope Tex gets his book soon.
