Family Ties #2

Leo, My Partner

Rate this book
Leo

Pretending to be like everyone else is exhausting, but I’ve mastered it. No one knows what really lurks behind the mask I wear every day. I’m not like others. I don’t experience emotions like they do. I have no need for human connection, but when I see Tyshawn, that changes. One look and I know he’s mine. It doesn’t matter that I’ve never been with a man before. He makes me want, he makes me burn. When he catches me … working … my second job, he has to decide if he wants to stay with me. I have to convince him that I’m willing to do anything for him … including slaying some of his demons.

Tyshawn

Owning my own bakery is my dream. When a friend of mine pushes me to contact the owner of Ray’s Beanery for a tasting to display my baked goods at his coffee shop, I jump at the opportunity. The sexy coffee shop owner I meet is as unexpected as my instant feelings of desire for him. That is, until I walk in on him covered in blood while he’s … working. I realize there is more to him than meets the eye. I’m terrified of him, but when I hear him out, I’m intrigued. I know what he’s capable of. Am I capable of it too?

Leo, My Partner is a MM dark themed, dual POV, high heat romance. It contains a strong and rambling baker and a psychopathic coffee shop owner that shows his kotenok how to kill those that deserve it. HEA guaranteed. Please check trigger warnings before reading.

❝ Turn around. Get on your hands and knees. I'll get you ready this time. I want you to fuck yourself on my fingers before you take my dick. ❞

Overall, I think this was still a good read. It is safe. It just doesn't scream winner energy. Doesn't scream 4 stars energy. Baking, murdering people, and a sizzling romance are good combinations but unfortunately it didn't won me completely over. My personal dilemma was that I thought I'm going to dig forever with the killing-the-bad-guys trope but it got pretty much old and boring to me. Like, I think I'm done with this story line. The only parts of this book that I truly loved was the baking bits especially in the first chapters. After those? Everything was slightly mellow for me.

"When Ty told me he wanted to see someone's toes removed with a mallet and chisel, I knew I found my soulmate"

I dnf the first book bc it felt like all Blu talked about was feeding "his beast." I'm sorry, that's cringy. Wasn't for me.
Thankfully, Leo didn't talk silly like that.
This was good. It dragged a bit. A whole lot of nothing was going on after the revenge plot was over, but it was fun. It picked back up when Ivan came into the picture. I liked him.

They had great chemistry. Funny banter. Hot sexy time. That part when Ty was baking croissants. 🥵🔥
I love how obsessed Leo was with Ty. All the first-time feelings Ty made him feel. He didn’t understand why his belly swooped every time Ty laughed.🥹 goo.
Ty was a doll. His random rambles made me giggle.
I want one of his cupcakes.

No epilogue.
Gfy.
No cheating, sharing, om.

DNF @33%

I really wanted to like this but the inner monologues got repetitive and I wanted more of a connection between the characters. There’s the obvious lust between the two but Ty is supposed to be the ‘normal’ one so him being totally okay with Ty being a murderer and feeling safe around him after ONE date didn’t really work for me 🙈

Love isn’t an emotion I’ve ever felt. Obsession, though? I’m intimately familiar with that feeling.

❥ Dual POV
❥ MM Romance

❥ Psychopath in Love
❥ Hitman/Baker
❥ Serial Killer
❥ Age Gap
❥ Interracial Couple
❥ Queer Awakening
❥ Obsession

Oh boy, this was one crazy ride! Whatever expectations I had before reading this book were blown right through the roof. I haven't read the first book, so that's probably why.

A psychopath and a baker fall in love... sounds like the beginning of a joke, but this is no joke, even though I laughed out loud several times, but it was mostly in shock. I just wasn't prepared for our sweet little baker to turn out the way he did. I'm not complaining though, I love when a book can surprise me in this way.

So, we have Leo, our psychopathic coffee shop owner, and Tyshawn, our cute and babbling baker, and there's an instant interest between the two as they meet. Leo, despite his psychotic tendencies, tries to play it cool, you know... giving Ty space and stuff, instead of kidnapping him. But when Ty walks in on Leo doing some very unhinged stuff, Leo sees no other way than to kidnap Ty, just so he can explain and hopefully convince Ty to give him a chance.

So yea, but it turns out that Ty has some pretty dark sides to himself, and the adventure begins.

I loved Leo and Ty together, so perfect and unhinged. Like, they really accepted each other despite their flaws, like Leo being a serial killer and Ty being a babbling mess sometimes. Like any other normal relationship...

I also loved the sense of found family in the book. Leo is close with his cousin who's dating his best friend, and they also get close with Ty, and Ty doesn't really have that many people in his corner, so that was pretty awesome. Also, Ivan, Leo's Russian grandfather, was pretty awesome despite being a psychopath as well. I also loved the Russian nicknames for Ty. Super adorable.

All in all, this book surprised me a lot but I really enjoyed it. It's pretty dark and unhinged, and let me just tell you... My toes and fingers were in pain during a specific scene in the book. Prepare for some detailed scenes.

No one will understand me like Ty does. No one will be able to see me the way I am. Without the secrets, without the mask.

I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

I fucking loved this!!! I enjoyed June and Blu in “Blu, My Protector”. However, “Leo, My Partner” was just out of the park. First of all I love the interracial representation to start off with that RS McKenzie portrays in a lot of her books. I think it’s great to switch it up sometimes and get away from the norm. Leo (born as Brad) is a great MC and I thoroughly enjoyed this character development as I read this book. While similar to Blu, his expression of emotion and feeling is pretty nonexistent unless he’s working but when he meets his love that all changes. Tyshawn (Ty) is a great MC as well he not only loved also for who he was but joined him and learned from him. They truly felt like equals and that meant so much. I really felt their love through the pages and it definitely showed how a relationship can cause someone to uncover layers of themselves they didn’t know were possible. This dark and steamy duet was amazing and while I’m sad there won’t be anymore I’m also happy because sometimes things are perfect just the way they are. Great read!!!!!

I love possessive claiming men, and with a from first sight ‘he’s mine’ behavior.
Yup, I love that!

That’s what Leo is, he wants to claim Ty and hold him close every second of the day, nah better not cuff him to his bed, but yes he’d love to because he’s clingy and possessive. Leo is surprised by the bodily sensation he feels when he looks at Ty, this beautiful Black guy with one blue and one brown eye, and his lush mouth. His babbling works soothing for Leo.
Leo is a psychopath with a dark soul, who can’t love and will not stay away from Ty’s beautiful soul.

Ty tries to stay realistic, a guy like Leo doesn’t fall for a guy like Ty. This man is way out of his league.
Ty, sweet Ty, if you only knew ha!

Why they meet in the first place is for business, Ty is a baker and Leo’s coffee shop needs all the delicious baked goods Ty can offer.
One day Ty will have his own bakery, it’s his dream.
Leo is head over heels for Ty and would do anything to make him happy.
When Ty witnesses what Leo does for a living, killing bad guys, he’s afraid to get killed.
Ha! as if!! Leo worships the ground Ty walks on.
Ty has a favor to ask, it’s one Leo can make Ty happy with!

Oh boy, I loved this narrative. Please, for your health, don’t read this if you can’t handle bloody, painful torture, because it’s all here. Do you know what else is here? Blu and June from the previous story!
Ty is thé perfect partner for Leo.
There are some spicy scenes to enjoy, some sweetness, even some sadness, a lot of possessiveness, and… delicious cupcakes and cookies!

I enjoyed Ty & Leo 🥰 I liked how Leo was different from Blu so it didn’t feel like reading the same character over again from book 1. Ty & Leo worked together so well. Instead of trying to change each other, they complimented each other. Leo was willing to do any & everything for Ty! My little heart did hurt for Ivan but I loved that he came to spend time with Leo and Blu 💙 This was a great read & I would love to see more characters in this world!

Leo, My Partner is the second book in the Family Ties series. Each book can be read as a standalone but I think it's best to read book one of the series Blu, My Protector first. Please read the trigger warnings before starting this book as dark themes are involved. This book is about Leo a coffee shop owner who is also a psychopath and Ty (Tyshawn) a baker. I was so happy this book was different from Blu, My Protector. I loved the way the characters complimented each other and didn't try to change each other. I loved everything about this book. I hope we can get more books set in the series. I would definitely recommend this book and series.

I liked this one, but I think Blu, my protector, was my favorite of the two. I think this one was more vivid in regard to the killings. And some things Tyshawn did, I thought were unrealistic. I thought Leo and Tyshawn were awesome together, and I loved them as a couple. I loved Blu and June in the book, I just loved them together, and I really loved Tyshawn and June's scenes together. And I loved the surprise person that I didn't know was going to be in this book. The ending of the book was a little emotional.

Disappointing

This was a highly anticipated book and I am thoroughly disappointed. This just wasn’t a good as the other books from McKenzie. I waited months for this book and was so excited so the letdown was unexpected.

There was like zero tension and so much filler! The book should have ended around the 50% mark but it dragged and limped on for another 100 pages or so.

There were a plethora of small grammatical errors, they didn’t necessarily hinder the story, but they happened so often and were so obvious that it got annoying.

Ty and Leo’s relationship was so bland and boring! I didn’t feel any connection or any strong emotional attachment to them and the lack of tension furthered detached me from caring about them. Ty’s easy acceptance and participation didn’t feel genuine at any point to me. Everything felt too convenient and way too easy.

I did enjoy the scenes with Ivan, Blu, and Leo and the initial meet cute but that is about it.

I must be a masochist

Disclosure, I hate the first book with a passion. However, I believe in second chances and I believe people can grow. Unfortunately, those beliefs have led me astray.

I didn't hate this as much as the first book but I still really didn't like it. It's still very stilted and one dimensional. Ty somehow cares even less about human life than June did, and again, we have a love interest who is torturing animals. I feel like this author has never seen John Wick.

I also don't understand how these normies are so cool with the wetwork let's say. It happened with June but it happens even faster with Ty. Why these books turn into a Harley/ Joker sort of thing, I don't understand because that's only hot to 13-year-olds who don't know any better.

My issues with this book are mere of my issues of the first book so if you want a more detailed review go check that out. I will say at least there's no fat phobia in this one and while we're still vilifying people struggling with addiction, it's not as egregious. Again, the bar is in Hell. Two stars because I was a fool who for some reason believed that this would be better. The least you could do was give us that cookie recipe for making a sit through this.

Also, I didn't mention this when I reviewed the first book but neither June nor Ty seemed concerned when a dude they barely know gives them a pet name. Like there's no acknowledgment whatsoever from them or Blue and Leo about it. They don't even make sense. Little fox? How does that describe June at all. Ty's pet name is in Russian but he's too d*ckmatized to even ask what it means. You don't know what this white man who hurts animals is calling you, that's all I'm saying.

story of Leo and Tyshawn

This is a dark romance, featuring Leo and Tyshawn, and is book two in the Family Ties series.

Leo has never felt the need for love or connection, but when he meets Tyshawn, everything changes—even if it means revealing his dangerous secret. Tyshawn is chasing his dream of owning a bakery, but falling for Leo means facing a dark side he never expected.

These two have this intense, instant connection. Leo jumps in to help Tyshawn get revenge for his friend, but what starts as a chaotic partnership quickly spirals into something deeper. Their relationship is wild and unhinged at times, but through it all, they become completely devoted to each other.

Things to expect in this book are:
Book 2 in series
MM dark romance
Hitman x Baker
Small age gap (33/24)
Size difference
Psychopath hero
Love at first sight
Possessive
Unhinged dates
Teaches him to 🔪
Bi awakening
Spicy times
Olive oil as lube
Both fall fast
Found family

1st person, present tense, dual POV
Leo Anderson (33), manager at Ray's Beanery
Tyshawn Glassby (24), law office clerk, aspiring baker

As with the first book, mind the content and trigger warnings. I'm not a huge dark romance fan, and I found this one to be a bit more gruesome than the first book, especially earlier on. What kept me engaged is how the psychopathic MC is inexorably drawn to and protective of the other MC. I adore that dynamic; us against the world.

I think from my interpretation of the synopsis I was expecting the initial relationship building to go on for a little while longer before Leo's true self was revealed to Ty and he would have to come to terms with that and I was disappointed that didn't happen. As it was, the big reveal took place like 15% of the way in and was really barely a blip for all intents and purposes as Ty himself has a dark side tempered by a moral compass.

While all the murder and torture wasn't really my cup of tea (if extreme vigilante justice is your jam this will probably be a pretty sweet treat for you), I quite enjoyed the mild family trauma and drama that was incorporated in the book, it was very emotional so if you're someone who cries at the drop of a hat make sure you have tissues handy. .

I like the support and partnership demonstrated by Ty and Leo; Ty helping Leo with his contracts and Leo helping Ty accomplish his dream of opening a bakery. The supporting characters we great additions to the book, it was especially nice to see Blu and June again.

While this book follows on the heels of Blu, My Protector, it would stand alone, though the reader would experience a more robust story approaching it like a duet and having the context of the first book.

I was given an ARC and voluntarily wrote an honest review.

R.S. McKenzie's latest series (one of them) is called Family Ties. The second novel in the series is "Leo, My Partner."

Why are psychopaths in dark romance novels so freaking cute?! I mean, sure, he's constantly covered in blood and describing things I did not need to "see" while eating, BUT the way he is with Ty?!?!? So. Fucking. Adorable.

The way Leo just blossomed with Ty. The way Ty just jumped into this crazy thing with two feet. The way Blu and June just accepted them into their messed up family. It was glorious.

Quote of the Day (Leon): "I'd rather he be with me willingly than kidnapping him and chaining him to my headboard. My de-dushka, Ivan, said I can't take people against their wills and expect to stay out of prison. While I like to keep what is mine close to me, I don't want to get locked up and be away from him forever. That would defeat the purpose of kidnapping him in the first place."

Quote of the Day (Ty): "'Demanding and possessive. Either the heavens have sent me the man of my dreams, or you're a psychopath. I'm not sure which one." First date, everyone. First. Date.

Trigger Warnings: murder, torture, violence, mention of sexual assault off page, off-page mention of crimes against children, mentions of animal cruelty and death on-page but in the past, mention of suicide off-page and in the past, and more.

This book is a walk on the dark side, a companion to book 1, Blu, My Protector, about Leo, Blu’s cousin, and his lover/partner Tyshawn. (Both can be read as stand-alone). Leo is a psychopath who has learned to appear “normal” in most situations. Trained as a killer when he was young, he runs a coffee shop by day and kills by night. Tyshawn is a baker, and he meets Leo while trying to have his goods sold in the coffee shop. There is a spark of attraction between them, especially unusual for Leo because one, Ty is a man, and two, Leo isn’t attracted to people other than for sex. But Ty’s word vomit of everything he is thinking, and his adorable clumsiness when he is embarrassed, catches Leo’s attention, and the word “Mine!” echoes in his mind. This is reinforced when Ty stumbles on Leo with a kill. Rather than killing Ty outright, Leo kidnaps him, takes him home, then tries to explain what a horrible person the victim was and why he had to die. After consideration, Ty agrees there was justification, then asks more about what Leo does and why, with a target in mind. Thus begins a really strange relationship of boyfriends, lovers, and kill partners (always for a good reason).

This is not for the faint of heart, as there are explicit scenes of torture which require a strong stomach. The dual POV takes you through Ty’s change from observer to participant, as they become avenging “angels”. There are peeks into the mind and psyche of a psychopath, incapable of emotion, but Leo discovers that there is something that can break through that barrier to lead him to be a bit more “normal” in one respect. Explicit sex is a significant part of the relationship and is a factor throughout, especially after a kill.

Definitely morally grey, there is emotion and feeliing in the relationship between Ty and Leo, and a whole other side of Leo emerges with the relationship with his grandfather, as well as a strong emotional connection with Ty and the grandfather. This is not an easy book to read, but it will grab the reader and take you on a complex, confusing and interesting journey into an unusual mind. Read the triggers, then if you’re still interested, get ready for a wild ride.

I received a copy of this book and this is my voluntary review.

This is the second book in the Family Ties series but it can be enjoyed as a standalone. This is the story of Leo and Tyshawn. Leo is the co-owner of the coffee shop Ray’s Beanery. Or at least that is his day job. His second job is significantly different. Ty is a baker who dreams of opening his own bakeshop one day. He and his mother worked on all the recipes and each time he makes something, he feels close to her once again. Her death has left a mark on his heart. Leo and Ty meet when Ty shows with a sample display of his products for a tasting. Leo, who is a psychopath, knows immediately that Ty is his person. Thankfully he decides to act normal and doesn't kidnap Ty right off the back. Since Ty has an instant attraction to Leo, they both start texting each other. Unfortunately while scouting a possible location for his bakery, Ty runs into Leo doing his second job. Fear and panic ensue and that kidnapping I mentioned earlier, it happens now. When Ty wakes up at Leo's place, the two talk it out and surprisingly Ty is on board. He is okay with Leo's second job and even mentions someone he wouldn't mind Leo taking care of. Now I had to suspend a bit of disbelief but I was drinking the Kool Aid. The two made a cute couple. Leo's best friend was also a good sounding board for Ty. But I have to say that when Ty not only supported but started to plan and participate in the jobs, it was a bridge too far for me. It took me out of the flow of the story. I was willing to concede overlooking or supporting the job but I couldn't get around Ty happily participating. But other than that, the book was well written and easy to read. I really enjoyed parts of it, there is definitely humor in the story even though the topic is fairly heavy. A good read overall.

I received a complementary advanced review copy of this book from the author and I am voluntarily leaving a review.

The unhinged goodness from book 1 was present in the second book of the series aswell and I couldn't be more happy!

We met Leo in book 1 and I'm so happy we got to see his HEA. Leo and Ty meet when Ty applies to make pastries for the coffee shop Leo and June own. Their connection is apparent from the moment they meet and Leo has to hold himself back from claiming Ty early on and scaring him away. After going on a great date, Ty catches Leo during one of his extracurricular activities and has to explain what it is that he does and what he is. Leo is a psychopath like his cousin Blu, but he's better at acting like he has feelings. Like his cousin, Leo is also possessive of Ty, but also takes care of him and is very sweet with him. Leo has also never been with a man, but he doesn't shy away from anything in the bedroom(or out of it).
What I wasn't expecting was the viciousness that emerged from Ty after his first joint extracurricular activity with Leo, but I was so here for it! He had some great ideas that Leo made happen. Leo also thought him a lot of things and that was interesting to see.

We also get to meet Leo and Blu's grandpa, the person that raised Leo after his parents didn't want to deal with him. The relationship Ty and Ivan built was very sweet, and just like his grandson he also thought Ty some of the things he knew how to do. In return Ty baked him every Russian pastry that he wanted.

I really liked how much we got to see of Blu and June. It was nice to see the cousins reconnecting and June and Ty forging a friendship as partners of two psychopaths, but not only as that.

I really enjoyed Leo and Ty's relationship, and how all in they were from the get go. I also loved how sweet they were and how they were always there for each other.

It's a darker book, but still funny and pretty lighthearted and low angst. Definitely worth a read.

Cringy dialogue. DNFd at 33% First of all who the fuck goes to check out a property at midnight ALONE?!? He gets to this abandoned, secluded property after midnight and the code to the place doesn't work, so he breaks in. THIS GUY IS A FUCKING GENIUS. After Ty catches Leo chopping up a body he gets drugged and wakes up the next morning. Leo convinces him that he would never hurt him. So Ty asks him to kill someone for him. On the way to pick up clothes for the trip, he gets a call from his straight bestie Sam.
Conversation between Ty and Sam. (Summerized)
Sam: “Ty! What the fuck man? I know you don’t have to report to me, but it would be nice to get a heads-up that you’ll be out all night. I was fucking worried. I thought you went to Fairmont alone and got kidnapped.”

Ty: I'm with Leo, he is perfect. We are going on a trip together.

Sam: Sounds real. He hasn't been violent?

Ty: “He’s been really sweet. We’ve talked and gotten to know each other.”

Sam: “And if I know you, his dick ended up down your throat.”

A bark of laughter bursts from me. That’s what I love about Sam. As my best friend, he’s had to listen to my sexcapades, and he’s never been weird about it. He does the same with me, and it’s only been weird with Beth, since I’ve grown to love her like a sister.

Ty: “Yeah, well, what can I say?” My laughter trails off. “Seriously though, Sam. He’s really something.”

***Graphically picturing himself gagging on Leo's dick***

Sam: Just be careful he is dangerous. Beth and I just want you to be happy.

Sam: “Good. I want you to be happy, Ty. You’re more than my roommate. You’re my best friend.” He chuckles softly. “Beth wants the same thing. She keeps telling me to set you up with her filthy coworker, but I don’t think he’s your type.” I chuckle along with him. That’s definitely not my type.

“I’m happy with Leo, so tell Beth I said thanks but no thanks.”

Ty has dreams of having his own bakery. He ends up going to Ray's Beanery (which made an appearance in the first book of the series) to see if his desserts can be sold there. He meets Leo and theres and instant attraction. These two spend more and more time together quickly becoming inseparable. One night while Ty is out checking out a location for a bakery, he stumbles upon Leo's extracurricular activities and from there its a whirlwind of adventure.

I really liked these two so much. Leo and Ty were perfect for each other. Ty finally came out of his shell and really embraced who he was deep down. Leo was soooo attentive. For Leo being a psychopath, he did anything and everything for Ty and to make sure Ty knew that he was wanted and cared for.

I know this is the final in the series but I really hope to get more of all of these main characters, I really loved them so much!
