The Aesthetic Understanding: Essays in the Philosophy of Art and Culture

Rate this book
Brings together essays on the philosophy of art in which a philosophical theory of aesthetic judgment is tested and developed through its application to particular examples. Each essay approaches, from its own field of study, what Roger Scruton argues to be the central problems of aesthetics -- what is aesthetic experience, and what is its importance for human conduct? The book is divided into four parts. The first contains a resume of modern analytical aesthetics, which also serves as an introduction to subsequent chapters. It also includes an essay that reviews current theories of literary criticism. The second part is devoted to musical aesthetics and contains the theoretical core of the work. Here Scruton describes the contours of aesthetic understanding, and defends the view that the object of aesthetic experience is inherently significant, even when it has no "content" that can be described in propositional terms. He rebuts the view that music is representational, and in the third part goes on to propose a theory of representation whereby to refute the suggestion that photography is a representational art. This third section also contains a study of film. The final part comprises essays relating aesthetic judgment to the understanding of culture, humor, and design. It covers many subjects, including the prose works of Samuel Beckett and the architecture of Leninism. The essays in this book form parts of a single intellectual enterprise, which is to give analytical foundations to the criticism of literature, visual art, music, and culture.

Sir Roger Scruton was a writer and philosopher who has published more than forty books in philosophy, aesthetics and politics. He was a fellow of the British Academy and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. He taught in both England and America and was a Visiting Professor at Department of Philosophy and Fellow of Blackfriars Hall, Oxford, he was also a Senior Fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center, Washington D.C.

In 2015 he published two books, The Disappeared and later in the autumn, Fools Frauds and Firebrands. Fools Frauds and Firebrands is an update of Thinkers of the New Left published, to widespread outrage, in 1986. It includes new chapters covering Lacan, Deleuze and Badiou and some timely thoughts about the historians and social thinkers who led British intellectuals up the garden path during the last decades, including Eric Hobsbawm and Ralph Miliband.

In 2016 he again published two books, Confessions of A Heretic (a collection of essays) and The Ring of Truth, about Wagner’s Ring cycle, which was widely and favourably reviewed. In 2017 he published On Human Nature (Princeton University Press), which was again widely reviewed, and contains a distillation of his philosophy. He also published a response to Brexit, Where We Are (Bloomsbury).

O KNIHE
Nejde o ľahké texty, a práve preto si aspoň pre seba zapíšem aspoň v skratke, čo som pochopil z tej, ktorej eseje.
Verejný text a bežný čitateľ
Fotografia a zobrazenie
Fantázia, imaginácia a film
Svoju teóriu smiechu zhŕňa do štyroch prepozícii: 1.

I now think Scruton is a bit out-of-date but still an interesting person.

I think the best essay in this book is "Photography and Representation", a very sophisticated attack against the position that grants film the status of art.

Being a collection of essays, they aren’t all equally accessible. Some you can read by themselves, and others require some philosophical formation to follow, specially at the middle/development section of the essays. But Scruton does simplify the discussion nearing the end of each of those so that you can at least read the essay again knowing what he’s arguing. You may find problem with the fact that the essays are outdated academically speaking, but I thought his conclusions have been proven in recent times. I’d warn only to be aware that it is a collection and not a cohesively structured work, there are some 4 overarching sections each doing its own thing.

olvasásom elsődleges célja: rájönni, hogy valid névadás volt-e a neresek kávézóját Scruton után elnevezni
