Deepest passion. Darkest betrayal.

Once, she was my world. The only one I loved. Then it was all ripped away—including my freedom.

Vengeance kept me alive. It paved every step, shaped every plot.

Until I finally caught her.

I learned that line between love and hate is wafer-thin. Where once my dreams were filled with revenge, now that I have her, all I think about is the intoxicating passion we once shared.

But there’s no turning back the events her capture has set into motion. It unravels a carefully constructed world, one where enemies surround me.

Everyone, that is, except her.

Now, we only have each other—and the love that once united us, to fight our way to long-buried truths that will change everything.

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Donna Grant returns to her captivating Elven Kingdoms series with a tale of second chances, love amidst chaos, and the healing power of forgiveness.

With non-stop action and tension as the plot is slowly revealed, Dark Heart is a roller-coaster ride from start to finish. Who are the good guys and who are the villains? Some are obvious but others less so. Who can Arya count on to assist her and who will turn against her? New villains are revealed and some who should be harming her seem to be offering assistance. But can she trust them? The Epilogue hints at things to come. I am eagerly looking forward to Donna Grant's next book in this series, Storm Wood.

Netgalley Arc Review

This is the first time I’m giving this author a bad review. Donna Grant is one of my top 5 all time favorite authors but I really disliked this book for four main reasons. This review will contain spoilers.

The first reason that I disliked this book was because the MMC, Jai is a Slaver. He was captured and enslaved 4 years before the start of the book and now he works for the “Masters” kidnapping other elves, including children, and giving them over to become slaves. He claims not to like doing it and knows what he is doing is evil. He thinks about all the terrible things that were done to him when he was a slave but he is still willing to do it to others and doesn’t even try to fight back. His whole reason he claims to do it is to protect his best friend, Priya who is his partner in crime. He never questions her motives.

Jai wants revenge on Arya who he was in love with 4 years ago and whom he thinks is responsible for him being enslaved. She has a bounty on her head which he decides to collect by kidnapping her and planning to give her to the Masters to be enslaved and killed.

My second reason for not liking this book is because Arya and Jai have no chemistry and I can’t understand why they even like each other. This book suffers from too much telling and not enough showing. We are told 4 years ago they had a connection while Arya was undercover and that they wrote love letters to each other but we never see any of it. When they are together on page they have no chemistry. They go from being enemies to making up and suddenly being in love again so quickly. They never explain what they like about each other beyond sexual attraction. Jai is a criminal. He was in a gang before being enslaved and now he kidnaps people and ruins their lives. I don’t know what Arya sees in him. Jai knows nothing about Arya since her entire career is based on being undercover and lying.

The third readon I didn’t like this book is the characters have no personality or backstory. We know absolutely nothing about Arya beyond her parents are rich and she is an undercover agent working with Dain. We are not told why she joined the CCD or what her motivations are or even what she likes/dislikes. She has zero personality and barely shows any emotion. She doesn’t get angry at Jai for kidnapping her and planning to sell her into slavery. She gets mad when others characters are mad at him and she forgives him too easily. Jai is too easily manipulated and has weak morals.

Lastly, the villain, Priya, who has been manipulating Jai this whole time is an absolute monster and psychopath and has the book progresses her crimes against Jai just get worse and worse. She murdered his parents, stole his letters to and from Arya, got him captured and enslaved, tricked him into thinking she was in danger so he would become a Slaver to protect her, framed Arya for the betrayal, got him drunk and raped him repeatedly one night (allegedly), tried to kill him by feeding him to a monster, tried to mind-wipe him and all because she wants him and thinks she loves him and he never saw any of it until Arya comes back into his life. I feel like Priya’s villainy was amped up to a thousand to make Jai look like a helpless victim instead of a criminal who made the choice to ruin lives. Jai is never held accountable and they only save a handful of his and Priya’s victims before going into hiding at the end of the book.

This book gets 2 stars instead of 1 because of Reva, a human side character who was the only interesting character in the entire book who was actually willing to act to prevent herself from being sold into slavery.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Interesting and involved.
This is Book 2 in the Elven Kingdoms series, which is part of Donna Grant’s much larger Dark Universe. This series deals with multiple types of Elves located on the planet Zora, so each books spends time explaining the Eves involved. Our two main characters, female Arya and male Jai, both are Dark Elves looking for vengeance. Secondary characters supporting Arya are her mentor Dain, and mates Yasmine and Ravi. Jai, and his best friend, a female named Priya are tied to an evil group called the Masters, which sets up the underlying plot Donna Grant takes these characters and these plot points and weaves an intricate and compelling read. Detailed enough to make the reader feel the betrayals and darkness but with enough violence to give it realism, and hope that the characters will survive. While slow in spots, the story moves along in a steady stream to the conclusion. Well written with good characterizations, I enjoyed this second book dealing with mostly the Dark Elves.
I was given an ARC by the author through BookFunnel, and this is my honest opinion.

This new series by Donna Grant has been interesting. As an expert in Paranormal Romance, I love the worlds that Grant creates. Despite there only being two books out in the series so far, it’s clear that the worldbuilding continues to develop and improve.

I enjoyed the characters and writing style equally as the author does a great job with the narration. I have no doubt that this series will do as well as her other ones.

I never thought I would enjoy elven stories this much, but Grant has convinced me. This mystical series is unlike any other series out there, so if you’re looking for something different to try, this new series might be fun to try.

Book 2 in the Elven Kingdoms Series and what a ride. Arya and Dain are set out to rid the Elven world of their enemies, The Masters. Jai wants to take vengeance out on Arya for her betrayal to him. He is assisted by his good friend, Priya. This story is action packed. Who are the real villains and who is out to help Arya and her group? Do Jai and Arya finally see the truth? We get to see the many types of Elves living on Zora. The ending sets us up for the next book in the fight against The Masters.

Arya is being hunted along with her superior Dain. She is leaving a bar when she is kidnapped along with a human woman. When she awakes, she’s in a cage on a ship being taken to the Masters. She has a gold necklace around her neck that restricts her magic. The man who disappeared over four years ago, is the one to abduct her. Jai has been waiting for his revenge against Arya for years. Because of her, he believes is the reason he is enslaved to the Masters. But someone was working against him and he finally learns the real reason for his captivity. Arya escapes but barely and goes to Dain. Dain, Arya, Yasmine, and Ravi sneak into the Fort where the kidnapped elven are kept and try to free them. But they are unable to free them and must leave while they can.
Slow burn romance. Secrets. Betrayal. Second chance for love. Good story. I felt like I was right there with them. Can’t wait for the next one.

I love Donna's writing and the yearning between each couple. I was really hoping for more depth in the fantasy
I think that's what is really holding me back from loving this series. I don't feel like there has been enough world building to really develop the plot.

I am absolutely in love with Shane East doing the audiobooks. The characters do run together a little but that just might be me. (I read these back to back so may be me)

Thank you to Donna and Netgalley for the opportunity to review this title. I attest that I am leaving my review voluntarily and honestly.

I'm not really loving the Elven part of this story. I did like the story though. I found that the chemistry between Arya and Jai is somewhat forced. It doesn't seem like they really want it, but they have a HEA. I'll read the next one.

Loved reading the mesmerizing and spellbinding second book in the Elven Kingdoms series. While Anya is missing Jai, she is captured by non other than Jai who is seeking revenge and plans to sell her to the Masters. Read the highly recommended, wonderfully written full of mystery, intrigue, and captivating character, and a must read riveting story. Can't wait to read the next story in the series by the phenomenally awesome and amazing author, Donna Grant!

Received an ARC for this and really enjoyed reading it.
This book follows Arya, who is introduced in the first Elven Kingdoms book. I might note that the Elven Kingdoms book is a spin-off of the Dragon Kings series, which is a spin-off of the Dark Kings series. As I haven't read either of those two series, I did feel like I was missing some details on characters, though it didn't interrupt my enjoyment of the story too much.
I really like how the author can do dark, scary, and serious without it being gruesome or horrifying.
The spice was good, slow burn till near the end. 🌶️🌶️/5
It was probably just me but I had a hard time finishing after around 90% through, as the main story had been resolved by that point. It seemed like it took too long to wrap up.

I couldn’t put this one down! Wow! What can I say? You need to pay attention because this story starts off fast and picks up speed very quickly. Then, just when you think it’s safe to relax for a bit, something else happens. The characters are well written, as always, each so multifaceted they keep you mesmerized. Then, are they allies, are they enemies, or just out for their own gains? So many twists and turns, so many different emotions. This captivating series has me on the edge of my seat and begging for more!

SPORTOCHICK’S MUSINGS: I couldn’t imagine that this series could get any better than the first book but oh I am so excited to say that it did in book two! Author Donna Grant’s combination of fantastical creatures, evilness, and tormented love makes this a thrilling adventure.

Dark Heart by Donna Grant is an amazing second book to the Elven Kingdoms where a hidden community of evil doers that was partially exposed in book one continues its unnatural devious schemes by increased trafficking of elves and humans to another secret location. Some elves from the seven races of elves who wouldn’t normally communicate continue to band together with humans to save their world from this unprecedented evil.

Previous elves, Dark Elves Dain and Arya, Sun Elves Savita, Esha with her Dragon King partner Kendrick, Ravi with his human partner Yasmin and newbie Dark Elves Jai and his childhood friend Priya appear in this book. Oh let’s not forget the evil ones Moon Elf Gita and One a Star Elf. Don’t let this cast of characters confuse you. The author puts together a great list in the front of the book explaining the Seven Kingdoms and their elven traits along with a map.

I couldn’t imagine that this series could get any better than the first book but oh I am so excited to say that it did in book two!

What I love about this book is that the action starts within a few paragraphs of the book and the author catapults the reader into the meat of the storyline quickly before she starts to weave a deeper web for the reader. The combination of fantastical creatures, evilness, and tormented love makes this a thrilling adventure.

There was never a moment that I got bored but I have to admit I lost sleep reading this book because I started reading it late at night and stayed up till I finished the whole book.

The love-hate relationship between lead characters Arya and Jai was portrayed as believable as was Priya’s love for Jai and hate for Arya. One of the best qualities of author Donna Grant's writing is her ability to create and portray characters that continually enthrall the reader.

The author's descriptions of the area around the characters and the events taking place takes this reader right into the pages of the book making me feel like all of this is happening to me. I really want to know who the people are above Gita and One. They must be very, very bad as Gita is not anyone I’d want to get close to with all her evilness.

With great disappointed that we didn’t find out more about these higher ranking evil doers I have to admit that I loved this book and am anticipating book three to the series.

Not to be remiss but I really recommend that you read “Rising Sun” book one of the Elven Kingdoms to get the full flavor of this series.

I received this book for free from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

4.25stars-DARK HEART is the second instalment in Donna Grant’s adult ELVEN KINGDOMS paranormal / fantasy romance series, a spin off, set in the author’s numerous interconnected series including Dark Kings and Dragon Kings. This is Dark elves Arya and Jai’s story line. DARK HEART can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty but I recommend reading the series in order.

Told from several omniscient third person perspectives DARK HEART follows Dark Elf Arya as she goes in search of the man she loves. Approximately four years earlier, while working undercover for the CCD, the Dark’s Counter Corruption Division, Arya is thought to have betrayed the man that she loved, pushing Jai out of her life and into the arms of someone else. Having spent several years searching with her partner Dain, in the hopes of finding Jai, Arya is about to walk into a trap, setting into motion, her capture and torture at the hands of the people in charge but Arya will quickly discover that the betrayal by someone else sparked Jai’s hatred towards our story line heroine, and a ransom for her capture was only the beginning of her spiral out of control.

The world building is complex and detailed, focusing on the trafficking and torture of slaves, and Jai was once at the centre of the destruction of so many lives. There is a council of Masters seemingly battling for control including the capture of our story line heroine, but Arya’s love for Jai is threatened by a lifetime of lies and betrayal.

The relationship between Arya and Jai goes from enemies to friends to lovers but someone else is waiting impatiently for Arya to be pushed out of Jai’s life. Jai believes Arya betrayed him and their love, and therefore is determined to make Arya pay for years of heart break and pain. The limited $ex scenes are intimate and provocative without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

Once again, there is a large ensemble cast of colorful and magical secondary and supporting characters including Jai’s childhood best friend Priya, Arya’s CCD partner Dain, the not quite human female Reva, as well as the return of Yasmin and Ravi (Rising Sun 1), and Dragon King Kendrick and his mate Esha. The requisite evil has many faces.

DARK HEART is a story of secrets and lies, jealousy and obsession, power and control, betrayal and vengeance, forgiveness and love. The premise is dramatic and dark; the romance is predicated upon a past relationship; the characters are lively, determined and dangerous.

Donna Grant’s "Dark Heart" is the second installment in her "Elven Kingdoms" series, and if you thought she couldn’t possibly top the first book, think again. "Dark Heart" is a masterclass in world-building, character complexity, and storytelling that will have you hanging on for dear life, praying your heart doesn’t get ripped out in the process. Spoiler alert: it might. But that’s why we love her, isn’t it?

In this dark, seriously dark sequel, we’re plunged headfirst into a plot so twisted, with villains so sinister they make Darth Vader look like a choirboy. These antagonists are so devoid of light, they probably have coal for hearts. And the betrayals? Let’s just say they’re deep enough to scar even the sturdiest stone. Grant doesn’t shy away from putting her characters through the wringer, and it’s in these trials that we truly see her skill as a storyteller. With every chapter, just when you think you’ve got a handle on the plot, she flips the script again. Prepare for whiplash, because *Dark Heart* will have you spinning like you’re caught in a tempest of emotions and unexpected twists.

As always, Grant’s world is lush, immersive, and dangerously addictive. The line between good and bad becomes deliciously blurred as we follow Arya and Jai, two characters who are fighting tooth and nail for their happiness. But the cards they’ve been dealt? Let’s just say it’s like playing poker with a stacked deck — and this game is far from over. You’ll be on the edge of your seat, wondering if these two can ever find the peace they deserve, or if the fates have conspired against them in a way that will leave them shattered.

And just when you think the ride might slow down, Grant hits you with a cliffhanger that’ll make you yell, “No, she didn’t!” It’s the kind of ending that will leave you impatiently tapping your fingers, waiting — no, *begging* — for the next installment.

If you’re looking for a paranormal series that combines heart-pounding action, intricate plotting, and enough emotional turmoil to make even the toughest readers tear up, "Dark Heart" delivers in spades. Grant has once again proven that she’s a force to be reckoned with in the realm of fantasy romance.

So yes, Ms. Grant, I’m ready for what’s to come — though I’m not sure I’ll be emotionally prepared for the wild ride you’re about to take us on next.

Arya is a dark elf working as an undercover agent for the Counter Corruption Division. She finds herself kidnapped and brought upon a slave ship, where she comes face-to-face with someone from her past. Arya never forgot Jai or her feelings for him. However, the handsome dark elf despises her for unknown reasons. Can Arya escape her current predicament? Will she learn what truly happened to Jai four years ago?

Jai is a slave for The Masters. He transports kidnapped elves and humans to a secret compound in Belowground. Jai dreams of exacting revenge on Ayra for her part in his enslavement. He finally achieves his goal, only to learn she had no hand in his capture four years ago. Can Jai help Ayra escape The Masters? Will he discover the culprit behind his enslavement? And will helping Ayra and her comrades be Jai’s atonement?

Sadly, Ayra and Jai did not leave much of an impression on me. I do understand some of Jai’s attitude. He did what he did to keep Priya from getting hurt in his stead. Second chance romances are not my thing. That aside, I think the story would have benefited with some flashbacks. Mainly to show readers the start of Jai and Ayra’s budding romance. Maybe show their personalities before their separation, so readers could see the change that overcame them.

DARK HEART is the second book in Donna Grant’s fantasy romance series, ELVEN KINGDOM. This is another spinoff from her DARK KINGS and DRAGON KINGS (especially the latter). This series focuses more on the elven kingdom on Zora.

I gave the book four stars because of the dark elf angle. Dark elves (or drows) have always been my kryptonite. I could never pass up reading a book/story where they are the main stars. Donna Grant’s dark elves are not like DnD’s. I like it when authors tweak races to make it their own. I did notice the author’s Belowground had one similarity to Dungeons n’ Dragons’s Underdark: the bioluminescence.

My nitpick centers around Priya. She became totally predictable. It got repetitious, and a little tiresome, of her continuous appearing only to disappear, unscathed. By the end of the story, Priya started to annoy me to the point of aggravation.

A Captivating Read

I picked up Dark Heart by Donna Grant without having read the first book in the series, and while I felt a little lost at times, it didn’t detract too much from my enjoyment. The story draws you in with its richly imagined world and well-rounded characters, even if you’re jumping in midstream like I did.

One of the standout aspects of this book was the incredible cast of characters. Donna Grant has a way of making them feel dynamic and compelling, and I found myself deeply invested in their lives and relationships. It’s rare to find a book where every character feels this vibrant, and it’s one of the reasons I’m now eager to go back and read the first installment to fully grasp the nuances of the story.

Book 2 in the Elven Kingdoms Series, Dark Heart is an action-packed ride. Arya and Dain are on a mission to rid the Elven world of their enemies, The Masters, while Jai seeks vengeance on Arya for betraying him. Assisted by his friend Priya, Jai is on a collision course with Arya’s group as questions arise about who the true villains are and who can be trusted. Along the way, we get a closer look at the many types of Elves living on Zora, which adds depth and richness to the story’s world-building. The ending perfectly sets the stage for the next installment in the fight against The Masters, leaving me eager for what’s to come.

The pacing was a bit uneven at times, with moments where the plot felt rushed or where I wished for more backstory to ground certain events. This might have been due to my lack of context from missing book one, but I think a little more recap or clarification could have made it easier for new readers to follow along.

Overall, Dark Heart is an enjoyable read that delivers romance, action, and intrigue in a beautifully crafted world. While I can’t give it a full five stars due to the occasional confusion and pacing issues, it’s a solid book that makes me excited to dive deeper into the series. If you love strong characters and a touch of magic, this one is worth a try—just start at the beginning if you can!

I’ll definitely be picking up book one soon to complete the experience

Betrayed by love
This is the second installment in Donna Grant’s Elven Kingdom’s series that ties into her larger Dark World. In this book, we learn more about Arya who we met in Rising Sun.
Arya is a Dark Elf spy, trained by Dain (another Dark Elf who we met when he helped Kendrick, a Dragon King, and his mate Esha.) After the events at Shaldorn, Dain warns Arya that bounties have been placed on their heads. He would never admit it, but he cares for & feels responsible for Arya. When she goes missing, he warns Ravi & Yasmin that they could be in danger & they insist on helping look for Arya.
Jai has never forgotten Arya and has long awaited being able to have his revenge on the elf he loved who betrayed him. It doesn’t matter that Arya was undercover, she is the reason he is a slave to The Masters. Bringing her in will grant him, and his friend / pseudo-sister Priya, their freedom. But Jai soon realizes all may not be as it seems, and he may need take a deeper look at the elf he has become.
In this book, Donna Grant is broadening the world of Zora for her readers. We get to go on an adventure through the Below, the part of the realm where the Dark Elves live. We learn that what was going on at Shaldorn may be happening elsewhere on the realm. We also learn that there may be a greater evil hiding in the dark of the below.
I am a long-time loyal reader of Donna Grant and I was having a harder time than normal with this book because the subject matter was really hitting me harder than I expected. But as she does so well, she kept me engaged and had me racing through to find out how our new favorite residents of Zora were going to save the day and what new magic Donna Grant would write for us. I am thoroughly enjoying this new Elven Kingdom series, and am eagerly anticipating Dain getting his own story – please don’t make us wait to long for that Donna!

Exceptional from beginning to end

Donna Grant's Elven Kingdoms continues with the second installment, DARK HEART. It picks up where Rising Sun concluded, and is a second chance, enemies to lovers story of two people who were once close until they were forced apart by betrayal, manipulation, and misunderstandings. DARK HEART concentrates on the Dark Elves, one of the many types of elves found on the realm of Zora.

Arya and Jai, both Dark Elves, met when the fortress known as Shaldorn was taken over. Promises were made, Arya waited for jai, but he never turned up, instead he was captured and became a slave of The Masters. Believing Arya had betrayed him, Jai was determined, even after four years, to have his revenge on her, capturing her was just what he needed. Having Arya once again within his reach brought back long hidden feelings, ones he didn't want or need. As time progresses, he begins to learn that everything he thought was the truth, was a lie. I loved Arya and Jai's story. Knowing that it was a betrayal that forced them apart, I loved that they began to work on rebuilding the relationship they once had. Who was to blame for separating them, and why?

DARK HEART was an exceptional read. Ms. Grant has woven a story which was intense, intriguing, action-packed, suspenseful, emotional, and full of passion. As with all of Ms. Grant's books I devoured this one, her words, the characters, and the emotions, made it difficult to put down. I can't wait for the next book, Storm Wood.

I love Donna Grant's writing. She is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. Everything I have read so far has been addicting. This story continues on from the Rising Sun book that followed Yasmin and Ravi. This book focuses more on Arya and Jai's story.

Arya is one of the agents that took down Shaldorn in the first book. It delves into her past more where she once fell in love with a man named Jai who she met when she was undercover. She waited for him after warning him about a raid and he never showed. Jai works for the masters as a slave. He sees the the bounty on Arya's head and finally gets to put his revenge fantasies into motion. Jai believes Arya put him in the path of the masters. He wants his hatred for her to fuel his plan but things don't work as he wants them to because he still has feelings for her.

This story was captivating. I loved seeing Ravi and Yasmin again. And after reading the Bastard King is was so nice to see Kendrick too. Seeing all the twists and turns of this series was making me feral. Priya is one crazy woman. Seeing all the steps she took to secure her love left me reeling because holy shit, that was another level of obsessed.

Arya and Jai were so amazing. I felt every struggle and ounce of their emotions. They really are made for each other.

But, I still have so many questions. I still don't know what to make of One. And that book?! I have so many theories my head is spinning. All of which will go unanswered until I can get my hands on the next book. Which I am now counting down the days until it releases!

Thank you Netgalley for the ARC. I highly suggest you read this book. But this isn't a standalone so if you do make sure to check out Rising Sun first.

I received an ARC via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review, so here it goes:

I liked this book. The way you would never purchase or prepare a particular side dish for yourself, but if your Nana handed you a plate with it on it, you’d eat it anyways since you don’t HATE that side and you want to be polite. Are you with me, here? Okay good, let’s continue.

Jai is precious, bless his heart, but I don’t buy it. I don’t buy his profession (slaver), given what he himself is (a slave…), regardless of why he says he “has to” do it. He’s so passionate about being against such treatment…. Yet he does it anyways? If you are going to have this be the case, I feel like we as the audience need to see him truly tormented by this lifestyle.

I think we needed much more backstory to their romance than the few flashbacks we received. Based on the flashbacks alone, it seemed like they really barely got to know each other before “being in love” and then sadly getting separated. As a romance girly, I needed that in order to better appreciate their reunion.

Spoiler-ish below. Beware.
Lastly, and I guess I’m hating on Jai again, but I just don’t find it so believable that he got played by his “best friend” for literally decades. You claim to know her better than anyone, trust her more than anyone, but she flipped the script and showed her true colors SO quickly that it leaves me to think there were probably signs all over the place that he just chose to ignore. Like, flashing lights type signs. Good grief, boy!!

My Review
The characters Jai and Arya were incredibly well written! The author did a super job of building them up and developing them. The emotions that we had to suffer through with them were like a real rollercoaster. It was as if you were standing next to them and could feel everything they felt! So much anger, fear, love, strenght. Even the characters from the first book, Yasmin, Ravi and Dain, had a big part in this book.

I thought the plot was very interesting and it got me hooked immediately. I had a hard time putting the book down! I liked the plot as it contained elements that are not usually found in the books I read, which made it even better, new and exciting! The Magic system was also different in comparison to what I'm used to reading, a big plus!

I thought the book was well written, simple short chapters which made the book easy and quick to get through. I just want to keep reading and I just want more and more of our characters and the story! I'm so looking forward to the next book in the series!

My experience of the book has been absolutely fantastic! I look forward to continuing reading! This series was the first one I've read by this author and I'm totally hooked! I look forward to checking out her backlist and reading more good stories from her!

This book was an E-ARC (Advanced Reading Copy) from the author through Netgalley and I am so grateful for the opportunity to read it early!

Thank you to Donna Grant for the e-ARC!

Dark Heart picks up where Rising Sun left off with a bounty being placed on our four heroes after they dissolved a human/elf trafficking ring. We follow Arya, a covert agent and her second chance romance with an elf Jai that she met on a previous mission. He believes that she betrayed him and therefore is hoping to collect the bounty on her head. We also dive further into the investigation of the source of the human/elf trafficking ring and who may be involved.

I generally don't think Dark Heart is as strong as a book as Rising Sun. While the world building and stealth mission were excellent as usual, the romance left much to be desired. We get very little reasoning why Arya and Jai are in love with one another aside from insta-lust. The relationship takes a back seat to the plot development, and I do think the book suffers as a result. The second chance romance is the driving factor behind the plot, and it was just not compelling enough to have any emotional impact.

I did love seeing Yasmin and Ravi again as their relationship is so sweet. I seriously hope that Dain is getting his own book soon because he is still the best character in the series. I can't wait to see where the overarching story goes from here as it is seriously getting interesting.

Nothing is as it seems and loyalties are tested in this thrilling second chance romance driven by revenge.

The beginning was phenomenal. My heart was in my throat for most of the time, especially when we were in Jai’s head where his thoughts were dominated by pain and vengeance. It was obvious that there was a colossal misunderstanding somewhere, but it was difficult to see how Arya and Jai would find their way to forgiveness.

We encountered some old friends from previous books and were introduced to a few new intriguing characters. Dain was a mystery that begged to be resolved. The rest of the book was our heroes doing their best to be brave and, well, heroic. Despite some slow parts where Arya was wandering through the fort, the action overall was fast and furious, and I became very invested in who these “masters” were. Jai and Arya deserved their second-chance happy ending and I was pleased for them.

I can highly recommend this entire universe of books if you like shifters, fae, elves, magic, thrilling action, and steamy romance. Even though this forms part of Donna Grant’s Dark World, this series works well on its own, though you do need to read the books in the series in order.

Thank you to the author for providing me with a copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Dark Heart truly is a story of two people, repeatedly betrayed and deceived by someone that was trusted, and while it cost them too much time, they find one another again through deadly and dangerous circumstances. While some stories are fille with lightness and fluff as two people find love, this is in no way that, instead filled with repeated obstacles, deadly battles, and near-death experiences that the lovers have to overcome in order to claim their second chance. Arya never thought she would see Jai again, assuming that he was forever beyond her reach, but seeing the darkened version of him might have been even worse if she couldn’t still see the man she fell for in his eyes. She holds that truth close as she battles through the pain and fear in order to reach him and soon they are faced with the truth that separated them, one that could break them even now, but Arya will do everything in her not-inconsiderable power to protect Jai this time and stop the slavers trying to take control of her world. Jai has lost most of his adult life to a betrayal deeper than any he ever imagined and a quest for vengeance that has darkened his heart, but finding Arya and their love again reminds him of the kind of male he is and nothing will stop him from showing her she can trust him. Together, with the help of her team, they will do whatever they can to bring down the disgusting power-hungry elves kidnapping and enslaving their people, but their renewed love will be the ultimate treasure to come out of their quest. Their passion is undeniable, even when it comes out as hatred, because real sometime love and hate are just two sides of the same coin, one that can be so easily flipped back over. I am dying for more in this series and cannot wait for Donna to take us on the next adventure.

This was a gripping action packed novel in the Elven Kingdom series. Jai and Arya met four years ago when she helped to take down Shaldorn, which was a terrible place. She waited for him but he never showed up. He was captured, beaten, tortured and made a slave to “The Masters” along with his long time family friend Pirya. He thought Arya betrayed him and he has been plotting his revenge on her and he finally captured her. But as with most of Donna Grant’s stories, not everything is as it seems and that’s all I’m going to say so I don’t give anything away. The action in this book is beyond amazing. The characters, some new and some from the previous books are so well defined and their personalities really come through. I love that Arya is a strong female character that for the most part can take care of herself but she is also not afraid to take help when she needs it. I must say, I am very curious about the character named One. I also can’t wait for Dain’s book, I think that will be a really interesting and great book since he is my favorite character. There are spicy scenes but they do not happen until the end of the book so it is definitely a slow burn but so worth the wait. This story was excellent!

This is the second book in the Elven Kingdoms series, which is part of Donna Grant’s much larger Dark Universe. This series is a spin-off from her Dragon Kings in Zora. It focuses on the dark elves that are introduced in the previous books (there are multiple types of Elves located on the planet Zora, so the book spends time explaining the Elves and their groups including a definition of each of them in the book to help the reader distinguish them from each other).
Our two main characters, Arya and Jai, are Dark Elves. Jai is looking for vengeance because of a mistaken belief. Arya has been waiting for Jai's return after a bad turn of events in the past. Secondary characters supporting Arya are her mentor Dain, and mates Yasmine and Ravi all from the first book in the spin-off. This book is so well done that you can “feel” the betrayals and darkness referenced. There is enough violence to give it realism, and characters that give you hope for their survival. Well written with good characterizations, secrets from a past, betrayals and well-developed characters create a second chance love story that I enjoyed reading about in this second book dealing with mostly the Dark Elves. Can’t wait for the next one.
I received this ARC by the author, and this is my honest opinion.

Donna Grant delivers another nonstop, action, packed page Turner of a story from beginning to
end with Dark Heart.

Arya is a dark elf working for the counter corruption division. Years ago, while undercover, she lost the man she loved and has since been searching for him. While it is believed that she betrayed the love of her life that is far from the truth, Trying to fight the corruption of the people that are ruining her home and hoping to get back that treasured person.

Jai feels the betrayal of someone who loved him. He sets out to extract revenge and deliver the betrayer to the council of masters. Just when he thinks he has all the pieces in place and his trap is said he realizes that not everything is the way he thought it was.

Arya and Jai find themselves as two pieces in this crazy puzzle. As the truth of lies and betrayal come to the surface as the darkness and lies begin to be exposed, and the pieces of this intricate plot start to fall together. Donna Grant has once again proven that she is a master at world building and knows how to write a story to keep readers on the edge of their seats. Intricate world building and ever weaving plot Dark Heart ticks off all the boxes for a paranormal romance read.

Thank you Netgalley and DL grant CC for the ARC in exchange of an honest review.

I have read the first book of Elven kingdoms and I really liked it. I had liked both the main protagonists Ravi and Yasmin. Just as I had finished that book, I saw blurb of this one and as soon as it was available here on Netgalley I requested it.

It was a pleasant experience reading Yasmin, Ravi and Dain all my favourite characters making an important appearance in this book. Sadly I had thought this book would be about Dain but it is about Arya. I didn't care much about her as there's no much character development not even in the first book and not even in this one. Same goes for Jay. I did not care for either.

The plot too was not so great. There's some other place like shaldorn so why was shaldorn described as single hell I do not understand. Shaldorn was unreachable, not enterable to common folks. But when there's some place even worse than shaldorn I feel it watered down the whole concept of it.

I would have given it 2 stars but giving it 3 stars coz I didn't expect to get so much of my favourite characters, it just felt more nostalgic. So 3 stars it is. I hope third book is about Dain.

Themes/Genre: Fae, Elves, Dark Fae, Romantasy, Magic, Betrayal
Author: Donna Grant
Book Publication date: November 12, 2024
Page Count: 406
Book Cover first thoughts: Love the cover even more than Rising Sun

Story Review / Summary:
Just as in Rising Sun the Map and image depictions are the best I’ve seen in all fantasy books. 7 Races of Elves page was a good refresher I looked over. All appreciate this and I don’t know why it is not common especially with complex world building.

I felt like this story is missing a little of a backstory, I would like to have more of Arya’s backstory. This book seemed darker than Rising Sun especially between Priya and Jai storyline. I enjoyed the writing, characterizations of the story which has a little mystery, romance and even dark themes with plot twists.

One of the things I love most about the Elven Kingdoms series is how the focus seems split equally between fantasy and romance. That is especially the case in Dark Heart by Donna Grant where our couple, Arya and Jai, spend the majority of the book apart. We get so much action and plot in this book compared to the previous that it absolutely feels more fantasy with a side of romance than a fantasy romance. Learning more about the world was great and really has me invested in not just the Elven Kingdom series, but I definitely wants to pick up her Dragon King series. The romance was extremely slow burn with the romance but quick on action and plot. Jai was a bit frustrating to begin with how blind he was to Priya’s feelings toward him, but once he learned boy did he stay tuned in. I loved that Arya never strayed from her purpose, despite Jai coming back into her life. Also, Dain remains the love of my life and I need the next book to be about him, my best boy.
