This series is never as obvious as it seems. Okay, except for the first volume, which is exactly as obvious as it seems until the ending. Otherwise it has been a creepy and stellar bit of spooky.
Michiru remains a mass of writhing tentacles as far as Miko’s concerned, but her real concern should be for Michiru’s obvious dislike for Hana. As the situation escalates, well, there certainly aren’t entire genres for females who are single and white replacing their rivals or anything.
Good horror is a treat and this remains a particularly excellent confection. The opening sequence, where a sleepover goes awry, is pretty fantastic. It’s pure atmosphere the whole way, with an archly timed crash of lightning.
Even better, the way an obvious fake-out gives way to something truly horrifying is done superbly. The return of Miko’s father is elegantly realized, coupled with one hell of an insightful line of dialogue from Yuria that you just know we’ll come back to later.
Everything just clicks along on all cylinders. This is a manga that knows when to veer away from the expected and predictable. It makes it more of a guess as to who outside of the main cast might actually survive.
Michiru is, ultimately, less of a monster and more just on the spectrum, if anything. She’s got some bad experiences relating to others in her past and that, coupled with her sister’s smothering behaviour, has not made her any better at understanding other people as time passed.
When she has lashed out and lashes out again, it’s very cut and dry (so to speak), until it decidedly isn’t. The way Miko has a handle on the whole thing is very much in character for her. She’s quietly stronger than she realizes.
And then, of course, there is Hana. I must have observed this before, but she is so much the beating heart of this series. It’s such a far cry from her introduction as jiggly fanservice. She’s wonderful and such a good friend throughout this volume. It’s going to be very interesting seeing where things go with all this moving forward.
Amidst all this resolution, including one that makes a lot of sense about Michiru’s origins, we get another budding plotline involving Rom that starts off with him as comic relief and goes pitch black in a heartbeat. And draws in something that has been present but was never presented as a clear threat before. Stellar plotting as always.
I wouldn’t say this is an especially funny volume, although I will call out Yuria’s ridiculous imagination painting Hana and Michiru as, well, bread warriors. That’s a really bonkers image that I got a chuckle out of. That’s my only note there.
What’s really good is the atmosphere and the world building. There’s just enough of the latter to make it feel like this is all going somewhere and the former makes the trip just as satisfying.
4.5 stars - I mean, it is a fantastic entry. I think the fox maidens were the pinnacle of this series, they were handled so well, but this turned out a lot more interesting than I expected. Creepy and heartfelt and an easy pick if you like horror.
This series continues to be an amazing experience! This volume finally wraps up the spooky tentacle girl and neatly folds her into the friends group. I'm not going to specify what the reveals were but when they were told they were so perfect for the situation that it made me smile! I'm looking forward to this odd group continuing to have their daily adventures and unravel the mysteries of this world they live in, even if they aren't aware of the mysteries and it's just the readers that get the revelations lol.
Well, you know how I said I wasn't fan of the Cthulhu girl or whatever she is? Well, OK, there were some bumps but I am liking her now! We get a glimpse in her past + learn what potentially is in her which is interesting (and spooky). The ghosts we meet are also terrifying as heck. Hana is a precious bread-eating bean, she is so cute and fun and I love how oblivious she is to everything, haha. I am also very glad that dad is fine, though I am happy that Miko is thinking about why he is sticking around, he shouldn't have any regrets or remorse, so why is he staying? I hope we learn more about that as the manga continues, I am definitely curious! Plus, tons of friendship, some tears, superduper terrifying ghosts (nightmare fuel hello), a Christmas story (and an adorable bonus story that was so sweet), and then there are some new things happening in regards to Rom, which has me very curious what is next for him (and for Miko as she will be bound to be pulled into it).
After the slower, somewhat comedic tone of Volume 9, Mieruko-chan, Vol. 10 takes a much darker and more emotional turn; one that finally gives us a proper look into Michiru’s past and the reasons behind her unsettling behavior.
The volume opens with a creepy yet familiar setup: a blackout at Miko’s house, a supposed “ghost sighting” that turns out to be Michiru’s sister, and a rain-soaked night that sets the tone for the eerie atmosphere to follow. But the real weight of this entry comes when we dive into Michiru’s backstory (and it’s surprisingly heartbreaking).
As a child, Michiru only wanted to help people and make friends, but her overly intense kindness often backfired. Her attempts at connection were misunderstood as weird or invasive, turning her into an outcast. Losing her parents at a young age and relying entirely on her overprotective sister, Yoh, left her emotionally fragile and socially isolated. It’s a classic case of someone who meant well but never learned how to express it the “right” way; and that vulnerability makes her all the more sympathetic.
This new context makes her obsession with Miko more tragic than creepy. When she confronts Hana (telling her to “stay away” from Miko) the moment could’ve easily played out as malicious. Instead, it becomes a turning point for Michiru’s character. Hana’s warmth and misunderstanding of Michiru’s words lead to a surprisingly wholesome embrace that feels like a small moment of healing for Michiru’s fractured heart.
On the other side of the story, Miko’s interactions with Rom finally push the supernatural mystery forward again. His discovery about Michiru’s demon, and especially the revelation involving the mysterious old man spirit, adds a chilling new layer to the series’ ongoing lore. The fact that Rom refuses to look at that spirit again because it could kill him raises the stakes considerably; a reminder that Mieruko-chan isn’t just about awkward humor and jump scares, but real, creeping danger.
I think I'll stop reading up to this point. It's still an enjoyable story and a refreshing take on yokai, but the side characters are weighing down the series. Hana is not a bad character or concept but it's been a weird shift in focus with her mysterious aura compared to Mieruko's development. I don't care for Rom Shindou at all, he's a modern character, that doesn't bother me, but he feels a little too contradictory. Michiru's sister is fascinating and I wish she was more of the focus in this volume. Yuria feels like she's been replaced by Michiru. It's not a "it's gotten so bad that I'll stop" series, but more of a "I'll watch the new season." I will still recommend the manga and anime

Mieruko-chan certainly knows how to put some great twists into place. I am sure Miko would almost wish that nothing is what it appears to be since that would be a lot easier on her. Regardless, a great ending to the Michuro-arc. I was certainly not expecting it. Also, Hana definitely earns best friend price in this one. As always some great art, especially the monsters keep me looking at the panels. I am also really curious how Yuria's question on Miko's father is going to push that particular plot point forward. Anyway, great read and looking forward to what kind of trouble Rom appears to have triggered in his attempt to help Miko...
My halloween book this year while giving out candy. Funny that the end had Christmas in it though. Found out that Michiru's octopus is probably a guardian spirit, I wonder if she picked it up when she found that caterpillar. The one outside the house that Mieruko's dad warned about though that was not explained. Also now have a new character introduction who may know more about spirits. Rom is also being attacked by a spirit Miko has seen before at school. I hope Miko and Yuria get on the same page eventually, Yuria is still bumbling around.

Miko's troubles with Michiru escalate as jealousy grows between the friend group and the whole thing is exacerbated by Michiru's overprotective sister.
Meanwhile, Rom, currently looking into the... thing clinging to Michiru, seems to have gotten in too deep and attracted the attention of something far more dangerous. The suspense!
But the Christmas chapter was so cute and wholesome... until demon Santa appeared, of course.
It's amazing how, reading this series, you can almost see the author growing as a storyteller in real time. For my money, this is the best volume yet - it has a palpable sense of dread and foreboding throughout that breaks through into downright terrifying sequences here and there. As always, no questions are answered without more being raised.
This is a fantastic series that just keeps getting better, and shows no signs of slowing down. Looking forward to seeing where it goes next!
Me encanta como el autor le da buen cierre a una historia y enseguida enlaza un nuevo misterio que descubrir, ojalá Panini ya no tarde tanto en sacar el nuevo tomo.
Me encantó la linda ilustración navideña de los hombrecillos 😆
So glad this story is back, this issue is good, a little sad as well, the characters development are coming around nicely and they are going deep. The story is getting very interesting and I can wait for the next volume.
This was a really great volume. I wasn't a huge fan of the holiday pages, but I love how much the story progressed and how much we learned about Michiru.
I can't believe it's been ten volumes already. Really enjoyed how the Michiru-chan storyline wrapped up. The new Rom storyline looks like a return to the more scary side of things.
This one ended up winning me over by the end. There was a chapter or two where I got a bit worried, but the character arcs are moving in very favorable directions for me. The monsters are AWESOME.
Oh I liked it a lot! We finally got to figure out what was going on with Michiru! Thank goodness. Now I'm just waiting to see why Miko sees these ghosts.
