but basically, it s a story of finding yourself and fighting for the love of your life underneath the action-rockstar hype, fame, stripping as a failed attempt to achieve smth more than being a failure in her own eyes, getting involved in a shady business with Las Vegas's mafia, being a victim of abuse, being a part of an undercover operation, being free yet coping to find inner peace and survive the trauma, and finally finding your goals and achieving your purpose in helping others through out your own painful experience...finding reality within yourself, with the man you love more than life standing beside her supporting her, cherishing her, loving her along with friends and family...- rounded HEA for a bit hectic and messy combination of different segments that make a plot.
First time reading smth by this author and i went in blind...even though, this book is a part of the series, it can be read as a standalone and enjoy completely in the storyline and the characters...
regardless the fact that there was a slight ingridient in a relationship I usually don't condone nor I have patience in dwelling upon it, here it's somewhat presented in justifiable way, so I've let it sly...

Scandalous Beat, my first book by this author. I may not have read the previous book from this series but I was able to connect to the story.
What I really enjoyed about this book is how Miriam tries to stand on her own after losing her scholarship. She became a Vegas stripper and she's good at being one but at the back of her mind, this is just a way to save and plans to go back school and finish it. She's a strong-willed, feisty, and sensitive but sometimes she doubts herself and thinks she doesn't deserve any good things that come her way.
Juaquin is a drummer of the Tempest band who got it bad for Miriam. Whom he saw growing up being the little sister of a bandmate Bryan, therefore it's off-limits. But when Juaquin saw Miriam in Vegas doing a provocative dance in front of him. Juaquin wants her and damn the consequences of loving her.
Miriam and Juaquin definitely know how to deliver some steamy scene(s) that will leave you hot and bothered. Juaquin is one hot Latino lover and very well-endowed. *wink*
As I mentioned earlier, this is my first book of Michelle Mankin and definitely not the last. I like how she wrote this story and I'm looking forward to reading more of her books in the future. Highly recommended!
Note: ARC provided by author in exchange for my honest review.
This review was originally posted on (un)Conventional Bookviews Scandalous Beat beautifully wraps up the Tempest series. I have to say, Mankin somehow always ups the ante, and I was mesmerized by the characters, their stories, and the slow, beautiful romance.
Story: There was even more action and suspense in Scandalous Beat than in the prior Tempest books, and I have to say that Juaquin and Miriam really worked for me. Both in the prologue when they were teens, and in the actual story when they were in their twenties. Miriam was a strong-willed young woman, and she lived her life on her own terms. She did not give in to pressure, even if that might have caught her a break as an actress.
Scandalous Beat follows Juaquin and Miriam, but other band members and their partners show up as well. There were corrupt and dangerous bosses in Las Vegas, and family troubles at home for both of them. Even if Miriam and Juaquin had not acted on their attraction when they were younger, I would still almost call this a second chance romance, because they did get their chance. But even then, things were rather complicated.
One of the things I loved the most about Scandalous Beat was how loyal these characters were. Both to themselves, each other, their friends and their family. It made them both realistic and relatable to me, plus I was invested in their romance and the danger surrounding Miriam from the start. Characters: Miriam used to be the good girl, the little sister who was always in love with Juaquin. As an adult, she was still good, but she had no qualms dancing in a strip-club to make ends meet.
Juaquin was very insecure, when he was younger, his oldest brother was killed by a local gang, and he could never live up to his memory. Even as a rockstar, he never felt as if he measured up.
The other characters had important roles, too, but the one I most want to mention is Miriam's best friend, Mikey. He truly deserves his own book! Writing style : Dual points of view, with chapters from either Juaquin's or Miriam's perspective brought me into the midst of their thoughts and feelings. The first person point of view and past tense worked very well with the above average pace, and the climax of the story left me breathless. Feels : Boy, did I feel it! The longing, the want, the need... But even more so the fear they both felt when the suspense became almost too much to bear.
My chosen prince. He sat on the couch only inches away, his eyes a welcoming amber fire. I found myself leaning toward his warmth, almost bold enough voicing my innermost thoughts.
Eyes that had been closed when I had kissed her blinked open and focused on me as if mesmerized, as I unbuckled my belt and ripped open the button fly of my jeans.
"Sorry," he apologized with a wry grin and cranked the sound down. "No worries. I listen to my music loud when I drive my Lamborghini, too." "I thought your car was a Ford Fusion." "It is. On the outside."
This is my first Michelle Mankin book. It was a little slow to start for me but picked up and was fast reading from there. I would read more from the author.
Arc generously provided in exchange for an honest review. This is the first book I read by Michelle Mankin, but for sure it won't be the last. In this book Miriam and Juaquin are attracted to each other since she is a teenager and he is a rock star in waiting, but he decides to ignore those feelings since she is the younger sister of one of his friends and band mates, so she is off limits. As time goes by, Miriam is a struggling actress and works as a stripper, crossing paths with Juaquin once again, now as a famous and rich rock star, he tries unsuccessfully to forget about Miriam and she tries to convince herself that she is over him, but they end up surrendering to their attraction. But since they are against all odds in this relationship... Could they have their happy ending?? If you are in the mood for a sexy modern fairy tale, the you should read this book.
I was in the mood for a rockstar novel and what better one to read than Michelle Mankin's latest in the Tempest series. Scandalous Beat is King's story aka Juaquin and how he fell in love with Miriam - Bryan's little sister. I have to admit I was a little confused at first since Miriam was talking about Lace being with Warren etc. and I was like wait a minute, isn't Warren with the actress and Lace with Bryan but all is made clear when we discover that Miriam hasn't been in the loop for years with her brother's friends and band. Years ago, Miriam's life went downhill, and now she has made her living working in Vegas as a dancer in a nightclub and being a tutor to the daughter of a mobster. Juaquin is in Las Vegas with his cousin when he runs into Miriam after being invited to the club she is working at. The pair never stopped loving one another, and they are both quite intense and heated people so their relationship is bound to be as strong and hot and definitely emotions run high when they are together. Will having Juaquin back in her life, be the push Miriam needs to be set free and reunite with her family? After reading this, I did love the characters, but for me, I have to admit my heart still belongs to Sager Reed. One thing which I didn't realize but I loved was the fact that in the author's notes, Michelle mentions that the females are all based on Imperfect Disney Princesses, and as I read this and thought about all the female leads it made sense, and I loved this added feature. The other thing that I loved and if you have read other books by Michelle Mankin is the brief crossover of series from Charles in the Finding Me series to Dirt Dogs etc. in the Rock Star, Surf and Second Chance Series and Raven and King's scene in RFC. Scandalous Beat was another awesome book, and I am now looking forward to the upcoming release of the new book Oceanside.
It’s never a good thing to feel apathetic about characters, and for much of Scandalous Beat, that’s precisely how I felt. In fact, I think the main reason I was drawn to Juaquin and Miriam story was because I’ve so enjoyed the Tempest series and now the characters through the other books. For me, what always set this series apart from other rock band romances were the gritty storylines and rough-edged characters. Though that was present in Scandalous Beat, it didn’t feel as pervasive as the others in the series. I certainly wasn’t as hooked as I normally am to Miss Mankin’s books, at least until the action and climax kicked well past the halfway point.
I really liked the idea of the forbidden love, with Juaquin lusting after his bandmate’s little sister. I also liked the two together. They knew each other so well and seemed very in tune and supportive. While there was no denying the depth of feelings they held for one another or the physical chemistry, I wasn’t captivated by this couple like I have been with others from the series, which is a shame because I’ve so been looking forward to this final book of the series. That said, I always like how this author recovers her characters after they face difficult circumstances. They’re never weak-spirited men or women, but ones who battle back despite any odds facing them. In that way, Scandalous Beat did the Tempest series proud. While this book didn’t work as well for me as others, this is still a series I’d recommend to any reader looking for a little more raw emotion and storylines to their rock romances.
*eARC provided by PA. The author had no influence over this review*
Juaquin and Miriam had known each other as kids growing up in the rough neighborhood of Southside. Juaquin had eyes for Miriam but kept his feelings in check since she was young and her brother, Bryan, were on the fast track to making Tempest a hard rocking band made up of friends and family. Juaquin wanted a better life for Miriam, one he never thought he was good enough to give her plus Bryan would never approve of the couple. As time went on Miriam tried different times to show Juaquin she was all grown up and wanted Juaquin only to have him break her heart time and time again. Years later after assuming Miriam was still in college in California and having the life he thought she was worthy of he and a low life friend rented out a whole strip club waiting to see the famous hot stripper who was performing there. Imagine the surprise when Juaquin recognized that the finale was none other than Miriam.
Was this finally the time for Juaquin to profess how he really felt about Miriam or had too much time passed and he had broken her heart one too many times? This was a book that had some hardships and darkness thrown in. It also taught you about never giving up on what you want and what you will go through to achieve it. Another great rock romance by this author.
I received this book as an ARC for a freely given and honest review.
Scandalous Beat by Michle Mankin is the final book in the Tempest Series. I have been waiting for this one!! My favourite Hispanic drummer King finally gets his story. King is all sexy Latino man who likes to be large and in charge and wants a Queen by his side. But not just any girl will do because he needs someone more spicy than sweet! This couple has a past and gets a chance at a future, but nothing comes easy for either of them. The chemistry between them is muy calente!!- Hot! Hot!! This book has all the best feels- so much love and desire. I felt very at home reading this story because it reminds me of my own Hispanic family and these characters felt like a real family to me. Now I crave my Abuela's tamales and migas! 5 grande stars! For more indie book reviews: Myindieauthorfix.com
This was my first read by this author and I’ll definitely try some of her other books.
Received and ARC in exchange for an honest review.
The storyline was interesting. It’s about two friends who feel more for each other but it’s forbidden. He’s her brothers best friend, it’s a no go zone but love doesn’t always take no for an answer. When they two finally bump into each other again their relationship kicks off. This is a story about love and loyalty to both friends, family and everyone close.
I really enjoyed the main characters and the storyline but I found myself skipping over parts of the story as it wasn’t connecting to me as much as other parts were but that would stop me from reading something else from this author.
Scandalous Beat is my first read by Michelle Mankin, and what a story!
There was so much depth to Juaquin and Miriam's characters. They had both been through so much over the years to land them close to rock bottom, and I really sympathized with their struggles. When they ran into each other again in Las Vegas after so many years apart, there was such an intensity between them that stemmed from their friendship and mutual attraction as teenagers. It was as if their passion and longing had been on a slow simmer for during that time, and it was completely unavoidable for them both anymore.
I definitely understood Miriam’s lack of trust and belief that Juaquin wasn’t just using her and was truly wanting to be with her, and at the same time, I adored Juaquin for proving himself as her King every time. He had such a sweet and loyal determination to make Miriam his Queen when he realized she made everything click and be right for him in his life. As their story unfolded, their bonds of friendship and loyalty built years ago only grew stronger with their new understanding and acceptance of each other. Their relationship was slow building and tumultuous, and I loved their strength together in the end!
I really enjoyed the complex and action-packed storyline. It was full of emotion on many levels and had unexpected turns as well, which Mankin placed quite perfectly in the story. She left me lingering alongside her characters, while they struggled through their obstacles and triumphs, really pulling at my emotions and making the story feel true to life. Honestly, I did feel a little overwhelmed that there were so many layers in this storyline, however, as it simmered in my mind for a few days, I understood why Mankin included it all to make the impact of the story even greater.
The writing was really good and encompassed a lot of heart. I did really have a hard time getting into the story initially though. I have not read the other books in this series, so maybe I didn't have enough understanding of the side characters and their storylines to pick up on the flow. These bandmates and rockers seem to share quite a history and have overcome so much together, and I admired their loyalty and strong bonds as family and friends. I am definitely curious to know their stories in the previous books in the series!
It looks like many of Mankin’s books focus on overcoming difficult life situations and trauma, and I love authors that write with a purpose such as this. It’s also impressive to be able to write about these tough topics, combine them with a romantic appeal, and actually pull it off as a reality. Mankin definitely achieved it here. Scandalous Beat is a suspenseful and heartfelt story with a great combination of edgy, super sexy, and sweet in the life of rock and roll!
*** 4 Stars for Me! ***
*** ARC kindly provided by the author in exchange of an honest review ***
I am a big fan of this author and this series. Each story is filled with obstacles, flawed characters, emotion, love AND hot rockers…...what more could you need? I also love how the author writes stories that bring attention and awareness to certain difficult topics… single parenthood, abuse, addiction, suicide, etc.
I could not wait to finally be to read King’s story and I was not disappointed! While you can read this book as a stand-alone story, I would have to say that you would be severely penalizing yourself from missing the way the author beautifully and creatively wove each story with all the others… dropping hints from the beginning books to the very end of this series while watching all the characters you have grown to love on their journeys separately and together as a band and family. In addition, I really believe that there might be a lot of details or references in the books that you “may not” understand otherwise why the author brings up certain plotlines.
Now that I have finished this story, I am definitely going to have to go back and start from the beginning to appreciate the beauty of each story again.
Scandolous Beat is one of the hottest book I've read in a LONG time. Juaquin and Miriam are old family friends and so there's an element of the forbidden relationship, older brothers friend and band mate being off limits to the young girl who's cruched on him for as long as she can remember. When their worlds collide a few tears after Juaquin pushed Miariam away, EVERYTHING is different and Juaquin decides to go for what he perceives as his. Michelle Mankin captures Juaquin in all his Latin man alpha man glory. The chemistry is off the charts SEXY and I really enjoyed the teasing that goes on between them. It heightened the eroticism and I swear it makes tingling just thinking about it.
The story is also anxiety inducing as Miriam's mafia boss has some very nasty plans for her. Seriously, it make my stomach ache just thinking what he might do and how he works to manipulate her into doing his bidding. This alone kept me glued to the pages but add in Juaquin "King" and Miriam "his Queen" and all their uninhibited carnal desires, I could not put this down. It was a one sitting read!
Looking for a sexy read with a bit of suspense? Add in a rock star and a determined young women, you've got one great read. 5 Stars and recommendation!
*I was gifted a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*
I'm torn between crying and udder joy. King most certainly lived up to his name! Amazing interweaving of all the Tempest story lines! Powerful and romantic! I can't believe the ride is over!!
That was my reaction as I turned the last page. I have been in love with this series from the beginning, but alas, the end has come.
Hidden feelings are revealed from the past. The chemistry is apparent between Joaquin, the drummer for Tempest, and Miriam, the forbidden little sister of band mate Bryan. After one treacherous night the two go their own ways, but not before making a last impression on each other.
"If I’m a queen you’re the only king I want."
Now Joaquin, AKA King, is a rich famous rock star struggling with being the single guy in the band. Miriam, a stripper, is hiding away in Vegas. One random night brings the two back together. From then on the fire ignites. I flew through page after page, hanging in anticipation and suspense.
Scandalous Beat is a smashing conclusion to the men of Tempest!
This long awaited final book in the Tempest Series is definitely the icing of this particular cake. Like the previous books, this couple is far from perfect, but perfect for each other. Loads of obstacles from early on have tried to keep the charismatic Juaquin and the misunderstood Miriam, sister of the bands guitarist from being together and through the years, the obstacles became far worse. But when they see each other again and secrets are reveled, there is no stopping Juaquin from getting what he always wanted. Great to revisit the band and their significant others, plus some new supporting characters that brought much to this story. There was one person missing from the story as a major hurdle was resolved, however I can hope this person gets her own story someday. Everyone of these books had an important message delivered in such a way that is never preachy, but always enlightening. I hope this isn't the end of the Tempest Family.
This book is my first book by this author. What shocked me after finishing it is that it is the sixth book in the series and I didn’t feel as if I missed anything by not reading the others first. It is a stand-alone read but is another member of the bands story so I will go back to read the others since the characters did keep my attention.
I have to confess. I have read the first one in this series. Not that I never plan not too. Feel I don't know where to start. This book was great, so emotional. If the other books are like this one then I will be crying when I get though them.
5 Picosa Stars!!!!!!!! ARC generously provided in exchange for an honest review.
I’m going to be honest…. I truly thought this was going to be a normal Rockstar romance. I was sadly mistaken. There is so much more to this. At first it seemed a bit slow going but once it takes off there is sooooooooooo much going on.
Juaquin Acendo is the drummer for the band Tempest. If you have read any of the other books by Michelle Mankin you most likely have already met Juaquin. He is a gorgeous Latin king whom I wish was not just a fictional character.
Miriam Jackson is one of Bryan Jackson’s younger sisters and Bryan is one of Juaquin’s bandmates. Miriam is considered off limits….forbidden…..Do-not-go-there. She has always been in love with him but when she was in high school he was too old and later on when she was in college he had turned her down. Now Miriam is an exotic dancer at a club in Vegas and she is known as Queen.
I don’t want to give too much away so I will not dive any further into the storyline but trust me when I say this has so much to it.
It is full of angst, but it is also sexy, sweet and there is suspense & action.
You will love the supporting characters also and every girl needs a best friend like Mike. When Mike & Miriam said they loved each other it would go like this: Miriam: “I love you”. Mike: “I love you too baby. Always and forever plus a day.” Sweetest thing ever!!! LOVED THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!
When Michelle Mankin writes a story about rockers, one thing is certain: it isn't going to be the same old rocker-meets-his-soulmate-on-tour story. There's always an extra element to it, whether it's a hard issue like suicide or anorexia or something more on the criminal side. Scandalous Beat falls right into that mold and delivers perhaps the biggest impact of all the ones before. And that's saying something because of all the Tempest books, War's book is my favorite (there's just something about War that gets to me every time and pulls me in). But King's book is a very close second. Aside from War, King has always been my favorite character, so it was really fun to finally get his story - and what a story it is! I wish I could say more about it, but I don't want to risk giving away any spoilers. Let's just say that it defies expectations. Just when you think it's going in one direction, it suddenly switches gears and goes in another, but not in a jarring way. More like a "wow, I wasn't expecting that, but damn" kind of way. And it works. The story is thrilling, engaging, and such a fun read.
This was the first book I’ve read of this series but, I had no trouble at all given they’re all standalone but I definitely want to go back and start from the beginning. Rockstar romances are one of my favorite types as long as they are with a different sort of element that’s not recycled from book to book and this was perfect cause it wasn’t didn’t fit the typical bill.
Miriam had a crush on Joaquin that started when she was a teen but, she was totally off limits being a band mate & friends sister and he’s good about keeping his distance until one night in Vegas blows everything to smitherines and Joaquin knows one thing and one thing only at this point and all bets are off.
There’s so much more going on in this story then just second chance at love, there’s a huge element of suspense that kept me hooked from the beginning and I can’t wait to go back and read book 1.
I voluntarily reviewed a advanced readers copy of this book
Loved it! I was hooked in as soon as I saw Rock star and stripper ad I was not disappointed. This book was an intense and sexy read.
Miriam is the younger sister of Juaquin's band mate, off limits for anything other than friendship. Young Miriam has been harbouring a crush on Juaquin but he's on the cusp of a success which will take him far away. Fast forward a few years and life has become tough for Miriam dancing so she can pursue her dreams, keeping secrets from everyone who knows her until a face from her past turns up. Will the attraction still be there?
I loved this story, with the exception of the Mafia involvement but luckily that was only a tiny element. Don't plan on getting anything done once you start reading this book, it is impossible to put down! I'm looking forward to the next one.
I was provided with an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I bloody love Michelle Mankin’s work. She writes everything I adore. Sex god men, who are musicians, mixed with romance. I won’t lie, I did a little squee with excitement when Lisa contacted me and asked if I would like to read and review Scandalous Beat! Juaquin Acenado and Miriam Jackson have known each other for a long time. Miriam has always been in love with Juaquin, pre band days and when he wasn’t at what you would call, sex god status. It appeared that her feelings were reciprocated but due to Miriam being younger and still in school, and the fact the Juaquin was in a band with Miriam’s brother, Bryan, and they were trying to make it big in the rock world, nothing was able to happen between them. Their feelings were unrequited. We jump ahead a few years later, Juaquin has gotten into a bit of trouble with the law, hanging with the wrong people and smoking weed. Tour has just finished, so Juaquin is in Las Vegas having some R&R and also taking the opportunity to record some solo work. So imagine his surprise when he turns up to a strip club and spots Miriam Jackson working a scene! She’s meant to be in Los Angeles, in college, with a great scholarship! Naturally, Juaquin needs to know what is going on. The problem…..as soon as they both lay eyes on each other, past feelings, that have always lay just under the surface and stopped them moving on to something serious with other people, arise. Now let’s throw in a relationship, mob bosses, fiery family members, protective gay best friends, media attention and a hot headed Latino, (just to start with), then we have one hell of an exciting book! Does the guy finally go for the forbidden girl and capture her for himself? Would it really be as easy as that? Hell no! Juaquin and Miriam’s story is drama filled, tense, nail biting stuff, with a whole lot of panty dropping chemistry and sexy times thrown in. I could not get enough of these characters and their story. Both Juaquin and Miriam have had really hard times growing up. Juaquin with losing his older brother to gang related violence and always feeling he was to blame and Miriam with struggling with her dyslexia and feeling that no one understood how difficult everything was for her and the pressure she carried on her shoulders. Maybe this is what drew these two characters together, both struggling souls. Throughout the story, you see the growth of both characters, their strength. This story seems like they are both on a journey to find their self-worth, to be able to make it alone and not rely on others, but to also stick the middle finger up to some people after achieving what is set out to do. Michelle wrote Scandalous Beat from the male and female perspective, so we gained insight into both characters and their inner struggles and emotions, also, of their fight for love. The writing is life like, with imperfect characters with weight issues, and learning struggles, it’s refreshing to read of things that people struggle with daily. The writing is expressive and detailed, it’s easy to follow the storyline and create the imagery in your mind of what is happening and of the characters. The writing style really helps captivate you. Scandalous Beat really takes you on a rollercoaster journey of emotions throughout, so be prepared for some edge of your seat stuff that you do not want to put down. A real book hangover worthy story! Once again Michelle Mankin, you rock! This book is a part of a series but can be read as a standalone.
Ah the Tempting Men of Tempest...I'm so sad to see this series come to an end but I'm been eager to finally get King's story, to see who stole his heart. Scandalous Beat was the perfect way to round out one of my favorite Rock Star series.
**Highlights** ~Characters In Miriam, we have a young woman who had a difficult childhood suffering from dyslexia and verbal abuse. She found solace in acting. She's such a sweetheart. Selfless, loyal, and caring...she puts others' needs and feelings before her own. In Juaquin, we have a talented young man who also grew up in hardship. He lost his brother to gang violence and has dealt with anger management issues for most of his life. He's loyal and caring but finds it difficult to deal with his emotions. These two together were always magic. They met when Miriam was too young but they shared a special connection, were kindred souls. But even once Miriam was of age, Juaquin felt himself unworthy of her attention, plus being the little sister of his bandmate automatically put her on the "off-limits" list.
~Forbidden Romance This was a trope that really worked in this case. Not only was there the age difference and the bandmate connection, but Miriam served as Beauty to Juaquin's Beast. There were all the reasons in the world for them to be apart but fate seemed to bring them together.
~The Journey Yes, there were obstacles against them...age, etc., but the biggest obstacle was not knowing themselves. Juaquin, in his desire for Miriam to have better than him, unwittingly hurt her over and over again. Miriam, in her desire to have him, lost herself. When they are thrown into each other's paths once again, without the reminder of the original obstacles, they both journey towards finding themselves, realizing their true worth as well as their feelings for each other. As Miriam said, "[Love is] about becoming something better because you're together. Transforming each other's weaknesses into strengths. Making something beautiful together."
~Relevant Issues This is a specialty of Mankin's, bringing awareness to social issues. Scandalous Beat was no exception. There were a couple of topics touched on including abuse and dyslexia but the main point I felt Mankin was trying to make was having the courage to ask for help when you need it. The way in which she conveyed Miriam's courage in getting the help she needed was brilliant as well as how she parlayed it into a way to help others.
~Emotion Mankin is adept at evoking strong emotions. The push and pull between Miriam and Juaquin kept me on edge, alternately cheering, steaming, or crying. The depth of feeling between these two was something special.
~Secondary Cast The secondary cast was a strength - not only because I got to spend time with some of the other Tempest couples but I also got to know Miriam's best friend, Mike. Mike is well developed and added complexity and depth to Miriam as well as the story. Mankin also skillfully tied in people and plot lines from earlier stories.
Scandalous Beat delivered characters that are genuine, a compelling story, and the full range of emotions as well as some smoking smexy scenes. It was the perfect way to "crown" this series.
The last book in the Tempest Series. Oh how I've wanted King's story and I'm here to say that Michelle Mankin gave her all with this one. Holy smokes. The unexpected love story that is King and his Reina in Miriam was one hard road. These two were clearly meant to be but how do you justify feelings for a teenager when you are are a hardened kid from the Southside of Seattle, with a heart full of poetry? Not to mention the teenager in question is your bandmate's little sister. What Juaquin (King) and Miriam feel for each other is pure yet it would take almost another lifetime before it could truly flourish.
What these two go through to even try to be together is one wild ride. Miriam (MJ as she is now known) is now a stripper and imagine the shock when a certain hot latino drummer sees her in action one night after he bought out the club for her infamous tub performance?! To say he is less than pleased is an understatement and so starts the unlikely and possibly ill-timed reunion for King and Miriam. But let me say this: the heat between them never truly went away. Now as older and somewhat wiser, that chemistry between them is full-on raging fire and both of them want to get burned, no matter the cost.
It's a push and pull journey throughout and I was never really sure if they would end up together. There is so much prior hurt and resentment from years passed and with the way King puts his Reina on such a high a pedestal, it's almost impossible not fall. But perhaps knowing his strong arms will be there to catch her, MJ may just get her King after all.
I loved their love. I loved that nothing was ever easy. And most of all, I loved that both of them would stop at nothing and no one to make sure the other was safe. Their passion is off the charts hot with sexy trysts, no matter where they were, melting my e-reader over and over again!
The entire Tempest crew is present and accounted for and the sense of family these characters have for one another, even when things get a bit tense and overheated, is what keeps me coming back for more. I have loved getting to know each and everyone of these amazing band members and the women who tamed them. This is one adventure not to be missed and I encourage you to go back to the start and read Irresistible Refrain if you haven't already and be prepared to be blown away. Like I've said many times before, no one does rock n roll quite like Michelle Mankin. Scandalous Beat is yet another amazing example.

Wow, there is a lot going on in this book….
A Drummer for a band, a Rapper, a Stripper, an Exotic Dancer with the stage name of Queen, the story of Miriam Jackson and Juaquin Acenado.
Juaquin is the drummer for the band Tempest and has had the hots for Miriam since they were teens. Miriam is off limits because she is the younger sister of his bandmate and friend Bryan. Miriam crushed on Juaquin long before going off to college. She tried to forget him but just couldn’t.
After Miriam loses her scholarship, she finds another way to make her dreams happen and supports herself by stripping in Vegas. Her plan is to save money and eventually go back to complete her degree. She is feisty, strong willed and sometimes self-doubts herself. She also works as a nanny for a mob figure who owns several casinos and strip clubs.
Juaquin has found success with being the drummer for Tempest. His brother died in a gang related killing and Juaquin doesn’t feel like he can live up to the memory of his brother. His family discounts him after a run in with the police. He has tried many times to forget Miriam but just cannot get past her. Known for his womanizing ways, nothing compares to Miriam.
Juaquin rents out a strip club for an exclusive dance from the one and only “Queen.” Then he realizes that the dancer is none other than Miriam. They are shocked to see each other. And the fire reignites between them. Miriam is cold to Juaquin at first because she is in a relationship with someone else. But Juaquin doesn’t give up. He keeps on pursuing her. Miriam finally gives in to a night of passion and both surrender to the attraction between each other.
Will their against all odds relationship stand the test of time? Can they get their happy ending? This book presents from dual points of view. You feel the passion and loyalty to family and friends between the characters. And the fear of being rejected between each. This is a good one!!!
Although I have enjoyed Michelle Mankin’s books, this one proved to start out a bit slow for me. I had a hard time with what I felt was a bit of a character discrepancy for Juaquin—he seemed to be a man of strength and honor, but lost that when Tempest signed a deal with RCA and began to tour. The person he came back as was not the man I expected. I lost of bit of respect for him as a character; I struggled with how he would overcome the decisions and choices to find his inner strength. However, after making my way through some of the frustrations I had for Juaquin (King), and getting into a bit more drama and mystery, I found the book more enjoyable and entertaining—even coming to understand why King acted and felt the way he did. Guilt and heartache, as well as lack of self-worth, can impact life.
Speaking of self-worth, Miriam was an outstanding character. She had an inner strength that fought with the self-doubt she felt. Her feistiness and independence helped her survive when life threw her for a loop. She worked hard for what she wanted and was not willing to cave to the pressures of the entertainment world and her dreams for stardom, even if it meant landing the leading role. Instead, she hid her pain and struggles from her family, taking on a job as a stripper, just to make ends meet.
As the two found their paths colliding, I loved the watching the inner strength of each bring out the best in the other. Miriam was the queen to Juaquin’s King. Facing family struggles, personal hurts, and a bit of a mafia ties that were ready to pull Miriam under, the two learned more about themselves and the strengths they possessed, while finding hope and comfort in one another—and discovering the power of family and friendship
“I’m holding the reality I want right now in my arm.”
This book had a lot of potential and it hit every mark of being a great book...there was just something holding me back from a five star and I’m not sure what it was. King through this series has been at the forefront for me (I have a soft spot for hot Latino men what can I say) his bad attitude also gave me the bad boy that I also love as well. We saw this relationship between Juaquin and Miriam budding from the first book in this series for the Tempest group, everyone in the band seemed to see it except Bryan and Dizzy. Miriam went through literal hell in this book, and for awhile it felt like this book wasn’t going to end on a happy note. We also finally got to meet Alex Treyall’s stripper boyfriend that was talked about but never seen during War’s book. The fact that Mike is Miriam’s BFF made me laugh because that was a pretty genius way to intertwine him into the group with everyone else.
The thing I loved about not only this book but the rest of the Tempest guys books was the fact that all of the female counterparts were highly flawed...neither character were perfect but they were all perfect for each other.
I was a tiny bit jilted at the end...I wanted to see Juaquin’s reaction to Miriam’s news! Not really this story but the whole series just doesn’t seem like it’s finished yet. It feels like things haven’t been dealt with all the way, ie: Charles and Mary, this new character Logan Black. Maybe that’s why I hesitated in giving this a five star because it didn’t have closure or finality as a series does when it’s over. With this being 2-3 different series in one tentative series it is probable that this wasn’t the end, and I look forward to seeing if any more are written.
