This still remains one of my favorite manga series, though admittedly I haven't enjoyed this latest arc as much. But there are payoffs to this arc, both in this manga with Ema and in later volumes Rokuro. So yes, there is a reason other than filler to break up the squads for these simulation exercises.

Story: The sims continue but with a new angle: the teams are tasked with creating their own trion units using certain parameters. In the meanwhile, certain teams are rising as they gain confidence with each other while others are experiencing difficulties and falling. During the course of the latest exercises Ema learns some devastating news about Hatahara and her mysterious disappearance, Chika grapples with failures in the battles, Osamu has to think his way out of his trion amount limitations, and various agents get to learn about themselves more.

The simulation arc has given Ashihara a chance to focus on certain individuals and flesh them out. E.g., what makes Osamu such a good leader, why Hyuse has been so quiet and underplaying his capabilities, Ninomiya's involvement in Hatahohara's departure, and the weaknesses of someone who has huge trion amounts like Chika. This volume was fun because it gave Ema a chance to confront Ninomiya on his lack of interpersonal skills - which Ninomiya would promptly throw back into Ema's face.

This volume includes two question and answer sessions, interviews with the anime voice actors and how they approached their roles, and a little introspective on what the Border agents would do for schooling/careers once they left Border. ♪ Here I am, once again, I'm torn into pieces ♫ because this series has such intriguing world building... but the plot is soooo SLOW!

If anyone is even reading my reviews, I'm sure I sound like a broken record by now, because this has been an issue for... I don't even remember how long because we've been going through test after test after test at such a snail's pace that I'm starting to think that the series will just... end when we finally get to the actual away mission. I don't want it to, obviously, it'd suck to slog through all this build up only for it to give nothing for us at the end.

But I'm committed to finding out, one way or another.
