Sebastien was living in Australia and his dream was to get to Antarctica, so he jumped at the chance to apply for a job as a chef on the icy continent. He actually goes back and forth a few times via cooking jobs (except for the first time, the rest were all with the same tourism company), and a portion of the book is back in Australia (where he brought back an idea of something he cooked during his for Antarctic job, and started a booth at various farmers’ markets in between Antarctic seasons). The tourism company he later worked for was based out of South Africa, so he headed there a few times, as well.

This was good. There was more off-Antarctica than I’d expected, but it did tie in somewhat (though I was initially disappointed in this). I feel like this might be of more appeal to foodies. I am not one, but in addition to his travel adventures, the author does describe a lot of the food he cooked, as well; not only that, there are recipes at the end of the book. There were pictures included, but I was reading an ebook on a black & white Kobo; would have loved to see those pictures in colour!

In A Chef on Ice, Seb Kuhn takes readers on an unexpected adventure as he embarks on a unique journey in one of the world's most remote and challenging environments: Antarctica. Kuhn's infectious enthusiasm for life, cooking, and serving others shines through on every page, making this book a delightful and winning read.

Kuhn's adventurous spirit is evident from the start, as he seizes the opportunity to work as a chef for the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD). His determination, qualifications, and personality make him stand out among hundreds of applicants, setting the stage for an unforgettable experience.

The book offers a fascinating glimpse into the rigorous training process required for working in Antarctica, from security clearance to survival skills. Upon returning to Australia after his initial stint on the continent, Kuhn embarks on a new adventure—launching a food truck business and turning a profit. However, when the COVID-19 pandemic strikes, Kuhn is forced to adapt once more. Through a combination of good fortune and resourcefulness, he grabs the chance to return to Antarctica.

Kuhn's likable personality and positive attitude in the face of adversity make him an admirable and relatable human that readers will enjoy getting to know. His tales of adventure, quick thinking, and creative problem-solving in the fierce cold and wind with limited resources keep readers turning pages to discover what happens next. Food lovers will revel in Kuhn's vivid descriptions of the dishes he creates, which showcase his passion for his craft and will have your mouth watering. Entrepreneurs will get a fascinating glimpse into what it's like to build businesses in challenging circumstances, make a living, and still do what they love.

I highly recommend this book. It's fun, entertaining, and always exciting. People who love adventure, travel, and food will especially enjoy it. The only minor critique is that it could benefit from more background on the other people with Kuhn in Antarctica or his family to add even more color to the narrative.

The book also provides access to Kuhn's stunning photography and videos of Antarctica, and there's an extra surprise at the end, which provides an immersive experience that transports readers to this awe-inspiring continent.

A Chef on Ice is a delightful adventure in the frozen wilderness, and Seb Kuhn is the kind of guy you'll want to follow on his next exciting adventure.

Exploring the frozen landscapes of Antarctica alongside Sebastien was a delightful journey captured within the pages of this book!

While the narrative itself was engaging, I couldn't help but notice some areas where improvements could be made. The book cover, font selection, and writing style occasionally gave the impression of reading a casual travel blog rather than a polished literary work. However, despite these minor drawbacks, I found myself thoroughly engrossed in the story.

One of the most captivating aspects of the book was its vivid depiction of life in Antarctica. As someone with limited knowledge about this remote continent, I was fascinated by the insights into how the characters procured ingredients, prepared meals, and formed deep bonds amidst the harsh environment. The level of detail provided, particularly regarding the respectful accommodation of everyone's dietary needs despite the logistical challenges, was both enlightening and commendable.

In summary, while there may be room for refinement in certain aspects, I ultimately found this book to be an enjoyable read.

The editor in me wanted to whip out my red pencil, but the reader in me enjoyed this journey with an ebullient storyteller. There are no adventures in the dangerous definition of adventure, but learning the details of living at the end of the world is fascinating. Lucky for us, our chef loves to party, meet people, and take up challenges. We learn how a dare from his comrades leads to a business venture back home in Australia. A lot of hard work is showcased both in Antarctica and Australia, but our guide never seems to lose his cheerful attitude. QR codes through out the book take you to videos and photos too. And there are recipes!
