Stephen N. Haskell (1833–1922) was an evangelist, missionary and writer in the early days of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church.
"Eternity can never fathom the depth of love revealed in the cross of Calvary," writes Haskell. "It was there that the infinite love of Christ and the unbounded selfishness of Satan stood face to face. The entire system of Judaism, with its types and symbols, was a shadow of the cross, extending from Calvary back to the gate of Eden, and contained a compacted prophecy of the gospel."

Wow! This book was not an easy read and it took me a while to get through it…but it was worth EVERY second of my time. I cannot stress how important it is to understand the foundation and ceremonies of the Israelite nation as every one of them points to Jesus. I 100% recommend this book to anyone who wants to develop a closer relationship with Jesus, understand the Bible more, and really uncover more about the mystery of salvation. As I’m studying the first books of the Bible, this book really helped me dig deep and it blew my mind away!
When I was in junior high, my mom used to read us this book so we could understand the sanctuary and its services. When I grew up and moved out on my own in 2000, I thought I would give this book a try, but it bored me to tears and remained on my shelf. Packed from box to box to box it traveled with me ... till I moved back in with my mom to help her financially and then took care of her until her death from cancer in 2011. During her last two years alive, she just fell in even more in love with God and the things she was studing and sharing were just amazing. So wracked with grief and searching for reasons why, I opened the book and read and studied and discovered anew a God of love and compassion. The more I read the more the sacrifice of Jesus was seen in the pages of the old testament. The sacrificial system made sense in light of Jesus' life and death and ministry in heaven. The feasts and the sabbaths ... the reasons why. And when I finished ... it was wow! Its a wonderful book filled with the truths of God ... it helps bridge the Old Testament sacrificial system type with the reality of Jesus.
The only downside, which doesn't really subtract from the five star rating, is that the author referenced books (The Book of Judith & the Book of Maacabes) which are not found in the Bible. That was my only negative thing ...
A foundational piece that has been added to my permanent library.
The Cross and It’s Shadow takes you through the various Levitical and other laws of the Old Testament and how they all pointed to Christ; the fulfillment. These things are all a shadows of what Christ did 2,000 years ago through the shedding of His blood. Haskell brings out out the beautiful symbolism in a way that is so extremely deep, yet makes it easy to understand.
I will use this book as a reference for the rest of my life.
