ARC-Read, Thank you Morgana Stewart for trusting me and sending me the Arc even if I did cut it close with the time.
Two princesses. Two Enemies. One Competition to be The Queen.
Anneliese and Tahlia are enemies. Tahlia and her people were exiled due to Anneliese's order and Anneliese mother was killed by Tahlia. But they are both Princesses of the faeries, vampyrs and witches. But which one of them will be Queen? The battle is raging on over the Wall between Faeries and Vampyrs, until the Oracle speaks and declares that the winner of a competition would be The Queen. The one to win the Viscount's heart in the five days until his summer ball will be the Queen and the battle will stop. But not just the two women have secrets locked inside of them, the mansion has a secret of it's own locked away behind chains. And with their arrival each secret and lie is dragged out - if they want it to be or not, if they are ready or not. Like their past friendship and why they are enemies now. It seems to determine the future they have to first look into the past. But other forces are moving in the shadows pulling strings to get what they want.
I enjoyed the whole read through and was partly gripping my e-reader so strong because I just had to hold onto something, anything, while more things were revealed or adjusted and brought to light. Secrets and Lies and Misunderstandings - Miscommunication and Lies that stems from fear, love, pride, manipulation of others and old habits.
The book shines it's brightest with the characters and their relationships. Especially the complex relationships with abuse and manipulation are expertly portrayed here and handled in a powerful way. Each women has her drive, her motivation and her pains. Sometimes they are the same, sometimes vastly different. And I found myself understanding these women, pulled apart and stitched together, their need to protect and their anger, their hunger for justice, their ambitions and their love, as well as their weak moments of despair and helplessness.
I went into this book pretty blind of what to expect, only remembering that it was a sapphic romance with historical setting and fantasy. Though I do think the historical setting did not come through, the fantasy did, as did the Plot and Relationships and I loved that a lot.
I did read it as a Standalone and it is possible when you are willing to give the book time and sink into the story of the characters and their relationships instead of into the world. I personally liked doing that for this book. Though I am a bit curious now about the other book, I do not feel a terrible need to read it to understand more.
The pace kept me engaged and as someone that read this in one day (thanks to a long train ride and then the last chapters in bed) I felt not fatigue or slump. I was engaged into the book and curious to reach the next chapter the whole time through.
I do think this is a great Book about how to admit nothing is ever clear cut and there is no perfect victim or pure evil in this world, so some people get awfully close. If you like complex relationships and entanglements, this is the book for you.
"You are not capable of this. You are a quiet, pathetic little girl." [...] "Good," I breathe, inhaling the scent of her spilt blood. "Then they will not notice me until it's too late."

I’m mainly a contemporary romance girly who doesn’t exactly yearn for enemies to lovers kind of tropes. However, I came across the author and this book on social media and I was tempted by promises of Bridgerton vibes and sapphic romance. That sounded fun! Add in keywords like cosy read and grumpy/sunshine (which actually is one of my favourite tropes), and I happily signed up for an arc.

Unfortunately, I don’t think the book kept those promises. Technically this was a sapphic enemies to lovers story but the romance arc dragged and the story held far more grim elements than what cutesy words like cosy and cottagecore made me think based on social media posts. The book was marketed as two ladies courting a viscount while falling in love with each other. Yet, very little courting actually happened and instead we were rescuing damsels in cells and doing or remembering very violent things.

I thought I’d get Bridgerton vibes, aka pretty scenes with the ladies’ hate slowly turning into yearning and falling for each other. Instead, I got a fantasy drama with a convoluted world that I didn’t really learn about and a story that feels unfinished, which is wild to say after a fairly long read. Since this clearly sets in the same world as the author’s earlier book (although it wasn’t marketed really as part of the series when I signed up), I feel some of my struggles could be explained by the author being too familiar with her world and not realising to share it with me. This book is most likely a part of a bigger picture she has in her mind, and as a standalone it was confusing and unsatisfying.

I really wanted to like this book, but...

I was intrigued when I saw the premise of this book in a post on Instagram. I love sapphic romance books, especially in a historical setting, and I've been getting into cozy fantasy lately so the book sounded promising, but I just couldn't get into it.

I felt thrust into the magic system without much worldbuilding and had trouble understanding it fully, especially since the story moved into the "real" world so quickly.

I also had trouble fully accepting the premise that the competition for "normal" Victor would be grounds for dissolving political conflict in the magic realm in the book.

The history between Tahlia and Anneliese at the beginning of the book was hard to follow and the complicated and not fully explained backstory made it difficult for me to fully buy in to their attraction as it was progressing.

So, I really wanted to like this book, but I found it hard to settle into the story and it made my reading experience feel unfocused.

I really enjoyed this book! I was so lucky to offered a spot to be an arc reader! Over the last year, my main goal has been to read sapphic romantasy and this fit so perfectly! Even though this is enemies to lovers it truly just feels real. I think so many people could relate to this love story! In my mind, it is less enemies to lovers and more wrong place wrong time. The tension between our two main characters… I was on the edge on my seat thinking “this is it!!!” I read this as a standalone but I will definitely read the other book because I HAVE to know more! I really enjoyed the changes in fairie and vampyr lore! More cozy vibes than I normally seek out but the tension so palpable I had to know what the outcome would be!

A beloved faerie princess. An exiled vampyr princess. A competition for the throne.

Tahlia and Anneliese were once childhood friends, now Tahlia has been exiled by Anneliese and they must compete for the throne. The oracle has set a challenge, whoever wins the heart of the human lord will be crowned Queen and rule.

Vampyrs, faeries and witches are separated and depending on who wins the throne, depends on their futures and if they will join forces again.

A wonderful story of misunderstandings, magic and love.
Left open for a sequel that I would look forward to reading!!

I was lucky enough to be an arc reader and what a book! I read it as a standalone, and I was able to understand the story and worldbuilding nonetheless. The sapphic tension is very realistic, it's all in the little things and details, it's portrayed pretty well. It has wlw, magic, cottage core, vampyres, yearning, exceptional writing, and so much more. If you like good fantasy novels that has no misogyny and containes actual dilemmas with patriarchy and manipulative relationships and how to get above them while being very sapphic, this is your book. Did I mention how amazing the writing is?

I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know and care about the characters, along with uncovering the plot that slowly reveals itself as the book progresses.

The focus is very much on the characters and their history and motivations, instead of on expansive world-building. This is something I enjoy and keeps the story human despite the fantastical elements.

Strong recommend!

Thanks to Morgana for sending me this arc.
What can I say? I really enjoy this book, I liked the magic system. It made me lived a lot of feelings.
I would say that some parts confuse me and there were things that didn't make sense (like why nobody was surprised to see the woman who scape a week a go, go to de dance).
I like Annaliese more than Thalia just because I could feel more for her, because her story it's truly devastating.
I like that it was slow with them, because it made sense. And the enemies part was interesting and well made in my opinion.

I was so excited to read this and it did not disappoint!! The author's love for the characters really comes across in the nuance of how they're written. Beautiful, complex relationships unfolding in a fascinating fantasy world <3

It was great to see another sapphic book

If you want to read it don’t read it as a standalone. Reading it as a standalone was quite confusing since I had to piece together the world building and characters, that I assume were described and built in the previous book. After a few chapters I feel like I got caught up despite the confusion. I recommend you read the other book first to get a better understanding.

The writing style isn’t reminiscent of books written for teens, which isn’t usually for me. However, throughout the book although the writing style wasn’t for me I was swept into the story.

I really liked the tension between the two main characters.

Hope you enjoy this book.

Thank you to Morgana for allowing me to be an arc reader.
