Heatwave Hockey #2

Damaged Defender

Rate this book
One night with the enemy player next door…now he’s calling me his wife.

Seven years ago we shared a night, and the next morning–he didn’t remember. Now I’m a journalist working my way up the news media ladder. When my best friend’s moody brother moves in next door. And now an endless parade of rowdy hockey bros stroll our shared hall.

He’s mister tattooed and dangerous. The Houston Heatwave's top defender. And the actual bane of my existence.

An injury on the ice has me playing nurse for one night. But when he asks me to marry him for convenience, I know he bumped his head too hard.

He needs a wife to fulfill an inheritance clause to save his family’s legacy. I need intel on his hockey team, my career depends on it.

So I wear the Heatwave team jersey–with his name on it. Soon I’m falling into this bad boy’s bed and we’re both scoring.

But Zane O’Connor’s scars are hidden. Mine are more visible and in the form of a six year old boy who looks just like him. If he finds out we could lose it all–and Houston, we’d have a real problem.

Damaged Defender is a spicy marriage of convenience, pro hockey romance. It’s the second book in the Houston Heatwave series and can be enjoyed as a standalone with a guaranteed happily ever after for our enemies turned lovers.

This book just felt like really lazy writing. I felt no connection to any of these characters, and everything was so slow and rushed after 75% was done. The first book in this series was okay, but this was just not good. Will not be finished this series

This was one of the most disorganized, stream-of-conciousness books I've ever read. I tried to type out all the random emotion changes in the story, but there were just too many. There were so many weird, dramatic surprises shown in. One minute they're enemies, the next completely in love, cancer gets thrown in out of nowhere, then more enemies, then a decades long murder plot??? It was so over the top it was ridiculous.

Don’t care for the cover. I liked different aspects of the story, but it felt disjointed and lots of random stuff coming out of nowhere with resolutions coming together too easily.

Wow! This was the first Anne Martin book I’ve read, and I absolutely loved it!
Zane is obsessed with living his life on autopilot, not allowing himself to really enjoy life or dream of anything better as he lets himself be ruled by a past tragedy.
And then there’s Kesley. An independent, proud mama bear who is intent on building a great career so she can care for her son.
Throw in some serious sexual tension, years of quiet obsession, and you have an enemy to lovers tale, thick with witty banter.
I loved Zane’s NHL brothers, and his loveable sister, and the explosive finish to Kelsey’s family weekend away. Top it off with not one, but two big plot twists and I… was…. hooked!
Can’t wait to read more Martin novels!

Arc Review original on Booksprout

There’s a fine line between love and hate : Kelsey is the woman who Zane is in two minds about. She is also the woman he desires.

Overall, Grief is an emotion that can ruin a life. Zane lost his foreseen partner and unborn child. Sadly, there was more to the story besides loss. Through his neglect, due to the loss, he also couldn’t see what was in front of him. Not only was/is he a Hockey player to Heatwave, but also a person of wealth via his grandparents.

Kelsey, single mother to a son Liam (8 yrs). Her best friend Libby and roommate who also is Zane’s sibling also neighbours. Confusing? It’s all in the read.
Back to Kelsey, - a firm woman supporting herself and Liam. Blackmailed to investigate and report on the Heatwave PR team found herself in a difficult situation to financially survive. Basically, there were more secrets here which were verbally vomited by a sibling at her best.

Greed was also the root to the storyline. Will not digress any further.
* Hockey player - issues/heartache/loss
* Single mum - independent/financially just coping/blackmailed within her work position
* Greedy relative that wants it all

A sports read, quirk on reference to Lion King characters.
Entertaining/heartfelt/emotional - a pleasant read.

Damaged Defender is the first book I have read by Anne Martin and I absolutely loved it. Anne got my attention the minute I began reading and kept it throughout the entire book. The plot was original, fun, exciting, action packed, sweet, included plenty of steamy intimate scenes and encompassed wonderful characters making for a very enjoyable read. I am interested in reading more books by this author in the future.

Kelsey was trying to make it big as a reporter, but at this point she hasn't had a whole lot of success. Kelsey works two jobs so she can provide for herself and her son Liam. Zane is a successful hockey player whose past continues to haunt him. Kelsey lives with her best friend Libby who happens to be Zane's sister. Oh, and if that wasn't bad enough they live across the hall from each other. Zane and Kelsey are constantly bickering about something making it almost impossible for others to be around them. There is an intense chemistry between these two and no matter how hard they try to resist Zane and Kelsey can't stop being drawn to one another. Kelsey is keeping a secret from Zane that has the potential to destroy their relationship? Will Zane be able to forgive Kelsey allowing them to find their very own happily ever after?

Anne Martin really knows how to pull you in and keep you there! This book had it all: steamy romance, mental/grief healing, humor and of course sports!

Kesley is a single mom who lives across the hall from her best friends rowdy, hockey-playing brother, Zane. She is also an up and coming journalist who has to decide whether to lose her job or report on the Heatwaves hockey time, which just happens to be the team Zane plays for. When Zane gets injured, Kesley stays over to keep an eye on his concussion and things start to get steamy!

Zane is also in a difficult position as well in this story, he has to decide if he wants to lose all of his inheritance or get married and make it believable to receive said inheritance. After losing his fiancé of 7 years ago, he's taken a hiatus from any actual real relationship because of the guilt he still suffers from.

One night after getting injured in a game, Kesley stays with Zane to make sure he is okay through the night. It's then he realizes how attracted he is to Kesley, and later he proposes the idea of them getting married simply for the inheritance.

Will Kesley not only report on Zane and his team, to keep her journalism career but also accept the marriage of convenience? I highly recommend you read this book to find out that answer and to learn how they both navigated their way through one steamy romance!

Packed full of popular tropes like best friend's brother, single mom, neighbors, marriage of convenience, and more is Damaged Defender worth reading?

Overall Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
Spice Level: On page - 3 out of 5 peppers

Likes
- The storyline moves pretty quickly
- You get to catch up with characters from the first book
- Another pet featured, this time a hilarious parrot

Dislikes
- The ping-ponging of how the main characters felt about each other didn't read well for me
- I found the secret involving the two main characters and the FMC's child to be just too much even for a book, especially for how long they've been neighbors and how long the secret was kept
- Rehashing the same issues over and over in internal monologues

I’d recommend Damaged Defender if you enjoy hockey romance and don't mind far-fetched drama and quite a bit of internal monologue over the same issues.

Even though this book wasn't my favorite, I would read another book in the Heatwave Hockey series if it continues.

Wonderful Story; Highly Recommend!!
Anne Martin’s stories just keep getting better! It ticks all the boxes for what I enjoy in a book: well-developed characters, interesting plot line, deep emotions, lots of spicy sizzle, and a bit of angst. I never give a synopsis of the book or reveal spoilers when I do a review, so this is my opinion on the merits of this book.

Zane and Kesley’s book is well worth reading. It is heartfelt, emotional, entertaining, and kept my interest throughout the story. I thoroughly enjoyed the scene where the shocking secrets were revealed at the family gathering.

Anne Martin really took this book to a whole new level with some shocking revelations at the end that were not predicted! Following some tense situations, the characters were finally granted their happily ever after.

I am really enjoying this series about the Houston Heatwave hockey players and I’m looking forward to the next one. I received a free ARC of this book and am voluntarily leaving my honest review.

This book shows that you are never to broken to get the ending we all deserve. Zane is a professional hockey player who lost his fiancée 7 years earlier, and hadn't quite been able to move past it. Kesley is a single mom that lives with Zane's sister just across the hall. Their chemistry was incredible. You can see how the two of them cared about each other from the start even if their relationship was a little bit rocky. The twists in this book were incredible, and I didn't see them coming at all. Also, I really appreciated that Zane took his life back and went to seek help for his mental health! It is amazing to see that representation as it seems to still be taboo for men to deal with their mental health even though it is getting better.

This is my second time reading Anne Martin, and this series is great! I can't wait until the next one comes out!.

Awesome Book!!!!

I absolutely loved reading Damaged Defender(Heatwave Hockey Series)!!! All about Kelsey Brooks who is twenty-eight years old and single mom, a part time bartender and a online journalist & Zane O’Connor is twenty-nine years old and hockey defenseman on the Heatwave NHL team. Kelsey lives with Libby O’Connor that’s Zane’s sister with her six year old son Liam, in a garden apartment in Houston, Texas. The O’Connor’s are huge hockey fans, but Kelsey can’t stand Zane because he blames himself for the death of his fiancee & her unborn child, who were in a car accident & killed on impact going to his Nana’s house. He was not in the car, nor was he anywhere near where the accident took place, seems he has survivor guilt. Read about Kelsey & Zane as they navigate being in close confines while Zane is recovering from a concussion. Lots of emotion and toe curling does occur. Definite Read!!!! Can’t wait to read book one!!!!!

Zane is a Hockey deffender, 7 years ago he was going to marry a women that she died in an accident.
He was broken till then he doesn’t want to hear about women not like his team mates .
He lives on a penthouse where his sister lives next to him with her best friend Kelsey that has a 6 year old son she works hard for her son many times he offered to help but she refused.
Kelsey knows them from forever when they met for the first time in collage he wanted to date her but at that time she didn’t liked him.
she helped him when he was griefing the loss of his girlfriend two months after they had one night together but he didn’t remember.
Kelsey loved him in silence but they were like cats and dogs, his friends makes a bet with him that he goes out with a woman but they have to choose the women they want.

This book is fantastic I really loved it.
I recommend the book to who loves to read hockey romance😉

5/5 ⭐️

Kesley writes click bait articles and has the chance to get a promotion to write real stories. Zane is her best friend’s brother who plays hockey professionally. This book has all my favorites – enemies/friends to lovers (it is kind of both, but I am here for it), best friend’s brother, fake relationship, stuck together, and so much more. I did feel like this jumped around a bit with surprises, but there were so many that I didn’t even imagine. There were many scenes that I would have loved to dive deeper into. I absolutely loved the book and am hoping for the next book to complete what I want closure on!

Amazing doesn’t even start to describe this book. Everything I have read of Anne Martin’s so far has been fantastic and I am so happy that I was able to read this as a member of her arc team.

Weĺl, the story started as true enemies to lovers, but in a flash they became frenemies with benefits and with a fake engagement in the mix.
At first it seemed kind of fast, but as the story developed I understood why it happened that way!
In this book, Zane needs a wife to get his inheritance. Kelsey needs gossip to maintain her job. They begin a fake marriage, but all the while, she hides her motives from him.
The problem is that she starts getting attached to him, to his friends, to his family and his life, and all she thought she could do suddenly becomes blurry and confusing.
A LOT of secrets come to the surface, and forces them to make hard decisions.
Their interaction was full on banter as we all enjoy!!
Ohh, and I really loved the pet name 🦁 and all the lion king references.

This is a quick read that has the typical love hate relationship between the two main characters. The author builds up the background really well. You learn why Zane is the way he is. Kelsey is his sister’s friend and roommate. They both need something from each other. He needs a wife so he can inherit his grandfather’s estate. She needs a good behind the scenes hockey information to write a story for her job. Will it work out when the ulterior motive is revealed ? This is a fun read that gives more background to get the reader interested. I highly recommend reading this book.

I think the best part of this book was the found family. Both Zane and Kesley (I definitely changed her name to Kelsey in my head!) were damaged and they both needed to find their people to live and confide in. The twists were unexpected and some felt far fetched (but, it's a fiction book so.....). I like that the story didn't revolve around the past but truly looked towards the future for Zane, Kesley, and Liam. I do wish there was more with Zane's nana: you can tell that she is such a powerful woman in her one scene. I love the way the hockey team truly were family and brothers.
I cannot wait to read the rest of the series, especially Libby's story.

This was a fun, angsty, enemies-to-lovers romance with a juicy secret baby twist. Kelsey is a hardworking single mom and aspiring journalist juggling two jobs, while Zane is a broody, tattooed hockey player still haunted by his past. Their bickering is nonstop, thanks in part to their shared history—and the fact that they now live right across the hall from each other. When a fake marriage arrangement brings them closer, sparks fly fast, but Kelsey’s six-year-old son holds a secret that could change everything. Full of tension, banter, and heart, this is a solid second installment in the Heatwave Hockey series with just the right blend of heat and emotion.

Kelsey and Zane spent one intimate night together that left her with a parting gift. Now she finds herself living across the hall from him. when an injury has her playing nurse mate to him, he asks her to marry him so that he can fulfill his inheritance requirements. Kelsey has her reasons for keeping distance but will agreeing to marry Zane be the best thing for her and will it change their relationship when he learns about her secret.

Zane and Kelsey

Two characters who are easy to love and who are clearly meant to be. Hidden feelings and other secrets makes this book a fantastic story.
We have a lot of emotions, past tragedy and plot twists.
A best friend´s brother, hockey player, next door guy and single mom tropes. What's not to love here. Both need each other to help them achieve some personal goals and the rest is history.

I really liked how this story captured the emotions, the background and the attraction between Kelsey and Zane.

These two cross paths in more way than one when she is a journalist who is tasks with writing a behind the scenes story about his hockey team and he lives across the hall in the apartment from her, her son and his sister.

These two have amazing chemistry and I loved the way the author addressed his mental health.

Muh...

This book was interesting...It took me over a week to finish it when normally it would have been a day at most. The premise of the story is great, the characters are good and there are parts of the story thats good, especially the intimate scenes. However the flow of the story or the style in which the story is written is jarring. It doesn't really flow and pulls you out of the story telling. Which made it hard to read and stay immersed in the story. So for me this it just was wonky read...

Great story about a famous hockey player who is still feeling a great loss from years earlier. His family is very unconventional, the grandfather left stipulations for inheritance requirements for his will. Some might see as antiquated, yet could be interpreted as family oriented. Now, time coming, decisions needing made, his sisters opinion is on board. Great story, lots of feeling, drama, unexpected things come to light.

Kelsey and Libby are best friends and roommates along with Kelsey's son Liam. Their next door neighbor is Zane, Libby's hockey player brother. Libby and Zane have an inheritance but in order to receive it Zane has to get married. Kelsey has a couple secrets. Zane and Kelsey have had feelings for each other for years but never told anyone.
Great storylines that all interconnect and the characters to carry it off.

This is a really good book. I read this in one night not going to bed until I have finished it. Zane his Kesley's best friend (Libby) brother. They have known each other for years and never told each other how they felt. Libby goes away on a business trip and leaves the two of them alone. Zane gets hurt during a hockey game and she plays his nurse. They start getting closer to each other during the nurse and patient stage.

This series is so much fun! I loved Pucked Together and couldn't wait for this book's release, and I was not disappointed. There is A LOT going on in a fairly short read. Several plot lines expand through the book, but they all weave together and end up complete. Zane and Kesley fell hard and fast and I loved their wild ride!
