I received an advanced copy of this book (thank you so much) and I have to say I am so incredibly impressed!

The magic system was refreshing and new to me, the world building is fantastic and I’ve fallen in love with the characters. The politics between different nations and their own views on magic was super interesting.

I’m actually sad it ended & can’t wait for more of this story.

Other pros:
Different POV’s blended together so well
Queer normative relationships (love that so much)
Ina has my heart and soul - my favourite character in the book
The Ilk = terrifying monsters really well written!

*edit* going to start a re-read now there’s a prequel coming out 😭😭👏❤️

I just want to say a huge thank you to the author for sending me a copy of this, much appreciated <3

in this story we follow multiple POVs of individuals in different areas who all seem to be facing the same problems in their own ways. whether it’s a king in a hidden realm being attacked by ancient creatures, a priestess spy discovering the secrets of her city, a tribeswoman cursed with evil powers- all of them in their own ways are facing life threatening issues, all begging to their own gods for saviour and help. I thought the plot of this was super interesting, it was really unique and super adventurous! as an indie author, without the a team of editors or publishers behind them, this was an amazing feat and one the author should be so proud of.

I think it was a little slow going at first, it took me a while to grasp each character and the plot but once I did I genuinely had a lot of fun with it. I definitely had preferences over my favourite characters and which storylines I preferred which is normal for me in multiple POVs, but by the end I genuinely ended up loving them all in their own ways.

I think the only reason I haven’t given it four stars is that I would’ve liked for all of the characters to have been linked better by the end, two of the four did indeed end up joining up for a brief period of time but the others? they seemed to be in their own world still, I think the ending would have been better if all characters ended up meeting so that book two could start straight away with them all coming together to figure out what’s happening. BUT I’m not the author and don’t know what the plan is for the next book, they might have an idea that I’m not aware of so this ending makes more sense!

overall a really fresh and fun book!

This book had me in a tight grip the whole read.
I don´t think I have EVER finnished a book faster since I could not put it down.
I am so happy I got the chance to read an advanced copy of this book.
The characters was great and the story did not just make me think that this was just an epic fantasy, but also a thriller, crime and romace book. It had all the good parts.
Since the chapters makes you follow one of the main characters you sometimes screamed out load NO NOT YET when a chapter ended on a cliffhanger and the next chapter where about one of the other two main characters, but then you did the same for that chapter.
Oh and by the way, Fay is my spirit animal!

I loved this book and would recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good high fantasy read. Despite this book being written in numerous POVs, it is simple to follow and not overly confusing like other high fantasy books I have previously read.

The whole story line does revolve around a previous war and the development of the kingdom as a whole. Each nations views on the cause of the war and their use of their magic differ greatly from labelling those with power as cursed to praising and relying on those with power. Each nation also refers to the other nations and gods differently, which can get confusing!

This book is not my usual read, but I am so excited for the release of the second book in this series. El has written this book brilliantly, and I loved the characters - There are a lot of strong female main characters.

Thank you so much to El for allowing me to be an ARC reader for this book, I honestly loved it so much.

Pros -
- Diverse characters throughout the book
- Steady pace to the book, nothing felt rushed
- The Ilk (horrible monsters) are described perfectly, and they may haunt my nightmares!
- Different norms and values of the nations
- POVs were easy to follow
- Amazing characters, and I absolutely loved Fay and Alexios (kinda ship them...)
- The entire book is a pro for me!

Cons -
- The book ended, and I'm sad the second one isn't available yet...

[4.5⭐️] The world building was absolutely amazing and the characters great! I really fell in love with Ina and Fay, and i have great appreciation for the clear research put in about indigenous cultures. Not to mention how casual queer relationships and representations were, it was truly amazing.

The story itself is so interesting, with a unique magic system, and i love that the magic differed slightly in interpretation depending on the characters background.

I genuinely couldn’t put the series down, at first i was a bit weary about the multiple POV as it usually isn’t my cup of tea - especially having to remember so many characters at the beginning, but after a little while i was craving all the different POVs. Not to mention how cool it was to see POVs overlap.

I can’t wait to read the rest of the series.

Thank you El for the ARC copy 🤎🤎

This is not a full review. I read through the beginning of all 300 SPFBOX contest entries. This was a book I wanted to read more of.

A female hunter seeks to capture the prize of an eagle and prove herself, winning the woman she loves and renowned in this island sapphic fantasy.

The prose here is engaging and descriptive. I’ve enjoyed reading it. It’s clear and physical, keeps its MC at the center of my attention, and has been explicit about what she wants. That all makes for a good start.

The stakes here are personal to begin with. I do think this could have done more to help me understand the desires and conflict in our MC’s life, however.

I get that, somehow, there is a woman that she loves who is married to a man and has a child with him - that this woman chose this man instead of her. That could have been more explicitly established.

I also would have liked to better understand how it is, if our MC accomplished this task before her, she could win this woman. Sure, she’ll prove she’s better than this man. Okay. But they have a child together, so…

All the ideas here are engaging. I find myself drawn into the world of the character. I find her jealousy extremely compelling. I just wish I understood the context a little better.

Her (secret?) magical gift, as yet still being revealed to me, is also deeply interesting. There is a good tension between her “actual” skill as a hunter and her use of this gift to make her way in this culture that holds hunters in reverence.

I can’t emphasize enough how fresh and well thought out the setting here feels. This isn’t a European fantasy. All the names are unique and invite my continued interest.

This has an unnecessary and brief prologue that I would cut. It’s typical powerful necromancer thing(?) creates a violent tone shift with ch1’s natural wonder. I wonder if the author feared readers wouldn’t be engaged by the slower, personal beginning alone.

They will! Except I also think the beginning would be more engaging if it started with our MC crawling along the rock face. I think we could be told everything we need to know from there much more effectively than the scene work that I felt dragged.

Though a slow start, I sense real talent in this story. The world and MC feel wonderfully realized. I’m also compelled by the sapphic nature of her love. I’m in!

Shivers. Exquisite. A standing ovation.

Who knew I’d adore a 200-year-old soul-binding Keeper? Soul Stealer is dark, brilliant, and utterly addictive. The world-building is rich, the characters depth, and the magic system is complex but easy to follow.

“A soul is not stolen. It’s offered — even when they don’t know they’re giving it.”

That cliffhanger? Completely uncalled for — and I loved it.

More, please.

The privilege of being an advanced reader copy (ARC) reviewer for this book has been a truly enriching experience, and the anticipation for future installments is palpable
this book captivates with its immersive world-building and compelling character development. The author's ability to create a vibrant and intricate universe is nothing short of remarkable. The settings are meticulously crafted, offering a rich backdrop that feels both expansive and detailed. This meticulous attention to world-building sets the stage for a story that's as engaging as it is profound.

The characters are the heart and soul of the narrative, each one meticulously crafted with depth and complexity. Ina and Fay, in particular, stand out as exceptionally crafted characters who not only drive the story forward but also leave a lasting impact on the reader. Their journey is both inspiring and heartwarming, making it impossible not to fall in love with them. Moreover, the author's dedication to accurately representing indigenous cultures through thorough research is evident and deeply appreciated. This commitment adds layers of authenticity and richness to the story, making it all the more immersive.

Another aspect of the book that I found truly remarkable was its casual and inclusive representation of queer relationships. The effortless portrayal of diverse identities and relationships adds a refreshing and much-needed perspective to the genre, making the story resonate with a wide audience. It's a testament to the author's skill and sensitivity in crafting a narrative that celebrates diversity in all its forms.

The plot itself is a thrilling ride, enriched by a unique and fascinating magic system that adds a layer of intrigue to the story. The magic system is not only original but also deeply woven into the fabric of the characters' world, reflecting the diverse backgrounds and perspectives of the characters. This diversity in magical interpretation enriches the narrative, making the world feel alive and dynamic.

Despite my immense enjoyment, I've rated the book at 4 stars due to the initial challenge of getting immersed in the story and distinguishing between characters, attributed to the frequent changes in point of view (POV) with each chapter. This minor hurdle notwithstanding, the book remains an exceptional read that I thoroughly enjoyed and will continue to follow with keen interest.

I was privileged to receive an ARC copy of Soulstealer and now look forward to the next instalment!

This is a key fantasy book that is clearly building to become a staple in the genre with an interesting world and magic system.

I feel the world building in the first part of the book needed some fleshing out as I had to make my own connections at times however this did not last long and found myself unable to put it down.

There are multiple POVs with strong characters without it feeling repetitive; in fact, the start feels like stories within a bigger story which was different and very enjoyable! How they come together and influence each other is interesting.

I love that with the multiple POV it is, for me, not quite established who is our main protagonist as they are all crucial to the plot and have equal story time...

El has done a great job of defining her own world and characters without simply using a 'cookie cutter'.

If you are looking for a new world, interesting characters with a clear development of story to come I would suggest this book!

There was some romance, but this is not at all a main plot point, more that a character has an interest - no spice however I would say there could be potential for some should the writer wish, but I do not see this being a plot point (I do hope a certain two characters get together however)

Queer representation!

I received an advanced reader copy of this book and I'm glad I did!
The world building was really good, at first I was little wary of the multiple POVs that didn't seem to have any connection but as the different parts of the world and characters in them started to interact I really appreciated the multiple POVs! The author spent enough time in each section of the world individually to learn a good amount about them before intertwining them in a clever bar some to leave an edge of mystery for the books to come.
The magic system was another thing I really liked with some of the magic in the world being lost to time, I can't wait to read how the characters rediscover the magic and how to use it. There was a lot of information to learn about the world, systems and politics of the world but it didn't feel overwhelmingly heavy or hard to get through!
There was great queer representation without making it into a showy thing, it was refreshingly casually included.

I had the honour of receiving this as an advanced reader copy and it’s a great book! Well written and enjoyable.
initially I found it hard to enjoy the multiple characters pov’s, but I soon enjoyed them and looked forward to hearing from each character.
I love the different characters views to what essentially seems like the same magic and how differently they see the world and each other because of this.
Honestly can’t wait for the next instalment so hopefully that comes soon (no pressure haha)

I have just finished reading my advanced reader copy and wow! What a book and I am thankful to be able to try and convince you to enjoy this amazing story!

Three characters and their stories all leading together is fantastic! Ina however has a soft spot in my heart with what she goes through!

Political intrique, dark mage and horrifying creatures called Ilk which will creep you out (excellently described!) and all in a queer normative setting!

As I was reading I had no clue as to where it was going which was refreshing for me! And my only gripe is that the book came to an end and now I have to wait for a sequel 😂.

Thank you again for this opportunity to be a part of this initial journey and I hope everyone gives this story and what's to come in this epic story that hopefully will become a fantasy favourite for everyone!!

This book is certainly the start of an epic and wonderful series.

The main characters all packed a punch of interest, each carrying their own unique storylines. Ina, Fay and Alexios each had such captivating storylines to follow and were amazing characters, their personalities shone through in spite of all the challenges they each faced. There was plenty of character development, self discovery and many heartwrenching moments.

The complexities of each of the communities/regions of people really kept me engaged in this story. It was definitely interesting to see how much they differ, their similiarities and their belief systems. The magic system even varied slightly between them and was uniquely crafted.

Overall, I became immersed into the world the author created. I am invested now and I cannot wait until the next book in this series is released.

You get to follow the different point of views of different characters and I felt just as invested in all of them. Even though Ina very quickly became a favourite.
Very interesting worldbuilding and I really liked the way the magic system works.

For me the casual queer representation was something that I really appreciated as well.

Well written, great characters, politics and magic and queer representation, a book I could really recommend.

I received an advanced copy of this book (e-book) and I just had to buy the physical copy as well to have in my collection of books!

I was honoured to have read this as an advanced copy reader, and boy, was I glad I read it!

I went from reading 3 books at one time to reading this alone. I was that hooked. I love the world building for each community and their characters and the varieties in each! I loved the normality of varying different relationships, same sex relationships, and open understandings, all written in a beautiful way for it to come across so natural and not forced.

The ilk.....utterly terrifying. I cannot wait to see what comes next, please El hurry and and write a sequel.

Epic long read about an alternate world one half where magic is banned and children killed for having it and another where the people with magic are the leaders of the town. It was well written and action packed. It had multiple POVs that all are working towards a common goal, even if they don't realize it yet! The ilk were a strange creepy group of beasts that murdered and cause death and destruction everywhere they go. This book took me a while to read because it was thick but I enjoyed it all. The ending leaves you with a cliffhanger!

This was a great first book in a series and I feel blessed to be an arc reader and I can't wait to keep on reading for any books that may come.
I have however rated this at 3 stars as it took me a while to get into this book and establish which character was which with the constant pov changing between each chapter, overall though an enjoyable read and I will following this series for the foreseeable future and I highly recommend you pick this book up upon release

I enjoyed reading this book, but will not continue the series. Below are some pros and cons for any prospective reader.

Pros:
It is a page turner. I raced through this book, always wanting to know the next part. The book is written from three perspectives and multiple plot lines, which works well in keeping your attention.

The story itself is just what I like. A big fantasy world with loads of history and different cultures. There's a big bad that feels very threatening.

There is a lot of mystery. You constantly find yourself trying to figure out why everything is happening. The characters through which you see the world are equally clueless, which works really well.

I loved that the societies in this world have different structures. For example, there's one where polyamorie is the norm and one where the ruling system is uniquely divided.

Cons:

Minor point first: spelling mistakes. Several times throughout the book, there are words missing from a sentence. A pet peeve i know, but entirely preventable.

The biggest critique of this book is that two of the three characters through which the story is told, are somewhat unrealistic. Specifically, they do not feel as if they are part of the culture they grew up in. They instead feel like a modern day person (from our world), living in this fictional society, and are not coping very well. They fight against the norm and are defiant of the status quo. However, there's no internal struggle between conformity and defiance, which you would expect. This makes the characters in question feel a little flat and unrealistic.

The second critique of this book is the lackluster ending. Although mystery and suspense is kept throughout the book, the story just kind of ends, abruptly. A lot of questions remain unanswered. I've heard that the prequal and the second book will answer a lot of questions, but I don't want to buy and read a second book, in order to enjoy this one.

Finally, one culture in this book feels like it's on the edge of being culturally insensitive. It is a tribal hunting society, whose members have Polynesian or African sounding names (e.g. Ina, Suni, Muak). Even the trees and beasts have names in this fashion. Initially, I figured this was just a completely different world to ours. It is fantasy after all. But then, the other societies we are introduced to (more modern "civilised") have oaks and elms, and horses. It makes the tribal society feel more foreign and "other", which is odd because all the lands in this fantasy world are supposed to be foreign. It makes the tribal society feel like a LARPing endeavour.

Summary:

An enjoyable and exciting story if read at face value. The world feels vast and full of mystery. The protagonists' motivations are always clear, although not always realistic. As part of a series, this books sets up the plot very well, but as a standalone book, the abrupt ending makes this part feel lackluster.

I was completely hooked from the first page of this. The multiple points of view were masterfully written, each distinct and adding layers to the story. I found myself fully immersed in this world, and the way the different characters carried their own voices was impressive, it kept me glued to the pages, always wanting to know what would happen next from each perspective.

The intrigue and constant sense of looming danger kept me on edge in the best way possible. The complex dynamic between nations at war, the sorcerers who literally steal souls to maintain eternal life, and a society fractured by the fear of magic was fascinating and terrifying at the same time.

Ina, the young hunter with a secret so dangerous that her life depends on keeping it hidden, had me deeply invested, especially when faced with the impossible choice of revealing her dark powers to save someone she loves or protecting herself. The stakes in this book are enormous, and McInerney doesn’t shy away from the tough decisions that keep you questioning what’s right or wrong.

One of the standout characters for me was Alexios. Living in his secret city, carrying the weight of the souls he’s preserved, he was incredibly rich and captivating. His character brought a haunting depth to the story as he wrestles with the morality of his actions. You can feel the burden of each soul and the weight of responsibility he carries, making him one of the most intriguing characters in the novel.

Fay was equally compelling. The balance of her dark past being held over her head as she adopts a new persona to gather information through subterfuge and guile kept me on edge. Her inner conflict and how she navigates these high-stakes situations made every scene she was in tense and unpredictable.

The world-building was rich and vivid, filled with tension and conflict that made me feel like I was standing right there with the characters. If you’re looking for a dark, high-stakes fantasy with characters you’ll care deeply about and a story that will pull you in and not let go, Soulstealer is it. I absolutely loved it and can’t wait to see what else this author has in store!

Had the opportunity to have an advanced copy and so glad.

This book has a lot of world building. You can tell the author has really thought above and beyond for this series therefore it starts out very slow and I'm thankful for it because it is not a light read, you need to pay attention for the details she put in because every single detail is important for this book and I think set the bar for the rest. I loved the characters and the intricacies that come with them. One of the things I didn't like, but it is more of an preference rather than anything else, is that it has different perspectives however I understood why the book is written that way as you can see events happening from different pov and the impact is much bigger. I just don't particularly favour it because I get easily mixed up who is talking, although the book is written in third person therefore is more manageable to keep track with whose pov you're following.

I love the magic and the taboo that comes with it. I particularly love Ina and Fay they both have a lot of fire in them and are quite cunning, clever and resourceful. The characters are so different yet you can see the similarities in them on how they think, their beliefs etc. Every character has their own story which adds more to the richness of the story and why it was so addicting!

The author's writing completely sucked me in as if nothing else mattered. Loved every second reading it and can't wait for the announcement of book 2.

I was lucky enough to receive an advanced copy, and I haven't read a book this quickly in a decade. I'm now frustrated that I have to wait for more now.

The shifting perspectives took me a little while to settle into, but it didn't take long before I was attached to every one of the main characters, and I thoroughly enjoyed how their individual stories started to intersect, as well as their different perspectives of a shared history, and the threat posed by the horrifically well described Ilk as a returning enemy.

It explores different types of magic use, views of magic users, and the difference between magic being inherently bad vs the people individually being bad; touching on the struggles that this presents from an individual to a societal level. A great mix of solid tropes and inventive character hooks combined with well-researched discernable cultures and politics made the settings very easy to understand, and I cannot praise El enough for how she has written queerness into the story without making it the whole point of any given character. I've already recommended it to friends and bought a release copy.

Solid 3.5 stars
I found out about Soulstealer on tiktok and the premise intrigued me. Overall, I felt like the book started off strong, I really liked the world building and I could tell that a lot of thought went into it. Although, I felt like the middle dragged for me and the pacing only picked up again later in the book. I think my biggest issue lies with overly descriptive scenes of action which sucked out the urgency from moments that are meant to be high stake and whilst I find the story intriguing I don't think that I particularly felt drawn towards any of the main characters. I don't know how to put exactly into words my feelings other than that at certain times the book lacked 'emotion'. However, I am hooked enough to see what happens next and (given how the author published the book without a big team behind her) I am impressed with the originality of the story!

This is truly a labour of love. Meticulously crafted and utterly inspired, Soulstealer is an outstanding introduction to this series. The author cites her inspirations as Wheel of Time and Game of Thrones, and she delivers beautifully.
It took a while for the story to build, but I was soon devouring chapters to delve deeper. The characters each have very clear distinct personalities, moulded and driven by their respective histories and cultures, right down to the vocabulary they use.
I highly recommend giving this book a whirl, as I struggled to put it down, and I'm very keen to see what the next instalments hold in store!

This was a thoroughly enjoyable, classic-style epic fantasy, following three converging tales through multiple POVs, across tribal islands, an isolated magic city and the bustling metropolis. It unfolds rather slowly but with deliberation and clear confidence that the author knows what they’re doing, gradually drawing in monstrous creatures and cleverly trickled in magic and religion alongside an engaging cast of characters. And it has a good measure of seamless diversity to boot. A seriously solid start to a fantasy series that I think you’ll want to watch.

While it took me a couple of chapters to adjust to the switching perspectives, it was refreshing and well paced between the major characters. Each perspective is told in 3rd person with the occasional peppering of inner monologue from the chapter’s focal character. I am in love with the world El McInerney has created. The magic system is unique and fascinating, nothing is without consequences. I cannot decide who is my favourite major character, but the supporting cast are both fascinating and full of life.

I cannot wait to read more of this world.

was hooked from the very first page. I love how the author tells the story from all perspectives. The characters all have their own flaws, and -at least for me- there was no clear "these are the bad guys those are the good guys" (except for the ilk) and I really enjoyed a story being told that way.

the book is written from multiple POVs which can be overwhelming sometimes - but not in this book. I feel like we get a nice amount of characters to follow and the pacing felt great.
