Les Visages de Dieu

Rate this book

description

description

description

Interessanti aspetti minori.

description

I would have given this book only two stars except that it's French. I think a lot was lost in translation--both linguistically and culturally--but in a way that I often found engagingly quirky. Mallock is the classic whiskey-drinking cynical brooding cop, but one who occasionally comments on his love for baguettes and fine cooking. He's a gruff loner on the surface, but appreciates friendship and ephemeral moments of beauty walking down the Rue Rivoli. It's like Law and Order: SVU meets Amelie.

The serial killer hunt is fairly interesting (and the killings VERY gory, FYI), but the narrative could have been much more briskly paced. The book didn't much deliver on its promise of being a "metaphysical" rumination on the existence of God, etc., which was what had initially intrigued me about it.

This was a goodreads win and was given the book free. This was a very interesting concept. It was gory but it still made you want to continue to read it. I would read more Mallock mysteries.

One of the things I like about reading books that have been translated into English is that the style of writing is different, it's a fresh formula that is new and interesting to my eyes. I have always loved a good mystery and this one had lots of twists and turns to keep me interested. A good read if you are looking for something out of the ordinary, beware though of the graphic details if you are a bit squeamish. A goodreads giveaway, thanks!

Had I read this book (the first in this series) before the author's The Cemetery of Swallows, it probably would have been the last one I would have read by this author. And that would have been a shame, because Cemetery of Swallows is so very good.

This book however was just too filled with murder scenes that depicted torture and frankly, outright depravity, just not my cuppa in any way shape or form. Every time there was another murder I'd become too afraid of how the author was going to top the last one -- some of these scenes are just so awful (children and even a baby) and nothing seems to be off-limits here. Just way too graphic and too over the top for my personal tastes.

However, around those horrific scenes, the author's writing has that literary, intelligent quality I crave when reading modern crime, so I'm sort of left with mixed feelings.

If you decide to read this one, caveat emptor , and don't say I didn't warn you.

Mallock is still an interesting character ("a depressive, anarchist upholder of the law with small ears and white stubble who could have had 'death to assholes' as his motto - if he also hadn't had a sense of moderation"), as are his mates on the police force.

My problem with this book is the gratuitous, grotesque and very graphic violence. Think Hannibal Lecter on steroids, with a religious mania. The plotting is so far over the top - the success of the killer over many years, with dozens of victims, stretches the suspension of disbelief beyond the breaking point. And yet I finished reading it - rather like standing at the scene of a terrible accident until the ambulance finally pulls away.

The writter uses a lot of technical words i've never heard before T_T
i was : what ?_? .. its in french .. my native language and i don't get a word lol.
thank you the dictionnary :D

it took me almost 2 weeks, i think, to read it but lately i was buzy in drawing XD

Mallock and his team had a hard work .. trying to find the murdered hidden behind the name of " le maquilleur". ( with all the current technolgy .. and using some illegal way or "researches"

i was O_O when i discover .. the "murderer" were in action since ages .. ...
Each crime scenes were .. how to say .. more horrible than the previous one ..

It's hard to "really like" a novel when you read hundreds. There has to be something outstanding about the book.
While this mystery is interesting, well-written, etc., I did not find it outstanding. It's a good read but a touch on the cerebral side...so that's where your taste must be.

The setting is Paris. If you'd like to track a serial killer through Paris, climb aboard.
