No Rest for the Innocent: Book 1

Rate this book
What was meant to be the happiest day of her life instead became her last, when Lady Francesca von Islelvin- sole daughter and heir to the Islelvin duchy- found herself dragged from the altar, rammed through a sham trial, framed for a treasonous crime she didn't commit, and finally executed on the orders of a king gone mad with brutally dismembered by the hand of the very knight she'd married mere hours earlier. No one can blame her for being surprised, then, on waking up again at all- much less whole and intact...In a manner of speaking.Follow the tale of the noblewoman patched together and revivified as an immortal undead in an experimental Frankensteinian process as she explores the pseudo-Victorian world of M. D. Sanders' debut series- an adventurous mashup of gaslamp fantasy, paranormal romance, and gothic horror- in pursuit of resolution, revelation, and... ultimately... revenge.

I love fantasy books, not particularly romance. But every now and again, I read outside my preferred genres, to...expand my interests so-to-say.

What we have here is mixture of fantasy, romance and a little bit of science fiction. There are even parts of it that delve slightly into superhero-style antics, which is more up to my speed. The romance is told in a way that is more playful and cheeky rather than overly dramatic declarations of love and longing. I preferred that.
The characters each speak with very distinct accents. The author made generous use of onomatopoeia. Some may find this annoying, but for me, I didn't mind. It helped with the immersion, and really made the characters' distinct voices and antics stand-out.

The main character, is what you see depicted on the front cover, so I don't think that counts as a spoiler. I found the explanation of the magic system to explain the how the main character came to be in the state shown on the front cover, quite entertaining when it was described.

Although, I would have wished sometimes that the magic system, and the general setting were explained a little better.

Francesca is framed for the murder of the queen. Thirteen years later, she is brought to life through revivification with magic, mechanics, and aetherium by Tirion.

Francesca (or Franky) was big sister and friend to Tirion, and he missed her deeply. So, he learned necrotism and revivification, and revived her. What he didn't expect was that Franky still had her soul. They decided that was because she had unfinished business: who killed the queen.

What follows are the adventures and misadventures of Franky, Tirion, Rue, Soren, Prone, Dempsey, and Emilia to find the murderer.

The book is entertaining and fun. I enjoyed it.
