Adam, the first man and his wife, the first woman, Eve, were punished by God with separation and immortality. Adam spends his long life searching for her, inadvertently becoming the catalyst for many of humanity’s myths and legends. Now, after 200 years searching other realms, Adam lands, a fish out of water, in present-day London with a fresh lead on his wife’s location…
I read (listened, technically) this book after I found Shoot From the Hip on YouTube and decided to look up what else those 4 very talented guys had been up to. I was quite pleasantly surprised and had a great time listening to Catherine narrate her son's book. There were certain points where I felt the sound effect kind of overpowered Catherine's narration, but other points where the sound effect just gave a little extra oomph (the music indicating which time period we'll be in before each chapter, for example). I would love to own a physical copy of the book, and I'd love to read the sequel even more.
This was so sweet and fun to listen to! I loved the music signaling which time period it was and the little sound effects sprinkled about. It really kept me immersed with the story. Catherine is a very talented narrator and brought each character to life! The plot was really interesting and Adam's character was so wholesome: watching him act so oblivious in current day society like that was adorable. The way the epilogue kind of gave the story in the prologue more context and a different perspective was so cool! The world was also very interesting. I would love to learn more about the magic and the other places Adam searched! That said, I really want to read the next book!
4.5 stars - really, really fun story! I wish there was more :( You can definitely hear the Neil Gaiman influences and I loved how the plot kept switching between different periods in time. Catherine does a fantastic job of portraying all the different characters too. Definitely worth a listen for anyone who likes fantasy!
This is like Good Omens, if Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett were better at writing female characters. Sam Russell has found quite interesting ways to combine mythologies that create an “of course!” sort of response. His value of friendship (also clear from his comedy work with his friends in Shoot from the Hip) shines in how his characters support and motivate each other.
What an absolute masterpiece. Sam is a brilliant writer. The whole magic/cosmology system was pure genius. I can't wait for the next installments and I'm hoping to the high heavens we'll get the physical book published someday. Loved every second ❤️
Such a fun story - I’m not normally one for audio books but I listened to the whole thing in two days and I’ve already recommended it to three friends.
There’s so many different mythologies and legends incorporated into the plot but it still feels cohesive, and you’re given enough touch stones to make it clear who the different characters are without having a tonne of exposition or feeling like you’re being talked down to. It might just be all the angels and garden of eden talk, but the writing style and the humour really reminded of me of Good Omens.
All the characters are so well fleshed-out - even the ones only there for one scene - and they all feel like real people with their own motivations. My only complaint about this book is that there isn’t more of it.
I've just finished binge listening to this on Spotify and came here to find somewhere to leave a review because I am OBSESSED. This is the best book I have come across in ages, fast paced and engaging plot, deep and clever characters and wonderfully read by CR.
