It’s his cousin who’s an agent of the Crown. But when Colonel Fitzwilliam brings along a mysterious, beguiling Miss Elizabeth to their family’s house party, Mr. Darcy can’t help but do some investigating of his own.
Wealthy, handsome, and privileged, Fitzwilliam Darcy has never had reason to envy his cousin Richard as the latter serves the Crown both on and off the battlefield. But things change when Richard shows up to a family house party betrothed to a supposed heiress, with seemingly no intention to honor his vows.
Left impoverished by her father’s untimely death, Elizabeth Bennet and her sister Jane serve the Crown as informants to provide for their family. Their assignments prove successful, until their latest one has them tangled up with an earl’s winsome son and his even more handsome cousin. Then suddenly, they’re not just risking their safety and their reputations, but also their hearts.
After Mr Bennett dies, the Phillips family take in the widow and five daughters. Jane and Elizabeth seek employment, and Uncle Phillips surprises them by recruiting them to become agents of the Crown gathering information against persons in the Ton suspected of treason. Jane and Elizabeth are successful, and accept an assignment involving Colonel Fitzwilliam, who is also an agent, attending a house party hosted by the Earl and Countess of Matlock. It's there that Elizabeth meets Darcy, and they're mutually attracted, but Elizabeth must maintain her cover persona. As Elizabeth becomes immersed in danger, Darcy finds himself trying to protect her, sometimes to the detriment of her mission, which she can't reveal to him.
This is a interesting premise, and made for a compelling tale. The romance is lovely, and not just for ODC. It's refreshing to read a JAFF variation that doesn't involve the usual cast of annoying characters, and doesn't include the acrimony that usually appears between Elizabeth and Darcy. I like this author, the book is well written and well edited, and I recommend it for an engaging whodunnit with some great romance on the side.
First off, the timeline is before Bingley let Netherfield Park I guess. Because first, no one knows of Mr. Bingley (Otherwise Mrs Bennet never would have allowed Jane to leave Meryton and work), also Mr. Darcy mentioned he got an invitation from Mr. Bingley to visit Netherfield Park.
The Bennet ladies certainly don't have it easy as it is stated at the beginning of the book. Mr. Bennet died, and Mr. Collins the heir throwing them all out. What else is there to do to support the family? Yes, employment, and so Jane and Elizabeth are brainstorming about the possible jobs. From there their crazy journey begins. Such as Elizabeth being a fake fiancée to the Colonel and Jane being her Lady's Maid and being undercover at a house party.
The house party was hilarious, even if at times I wanted to pull my hairs out. But Ms Lim's portray of Mr. Darcy made up for it. He was swoon worthy! I also very much liked her portrayal of Elizabeth.
However one point, I felt like the romance between Colonel and Jane should have been expanded a little bit more. If the author feels the need to have 2 romances, then maybe include more scenes between them so that it feels more believable but otherwise it was really good.
All in all it was a quick and fun read with clean content. I do recommend the book.

After the death of their father Elizabeth and Jane Bennet need to seek employment and therefore they become spies of the crown. For their next secret case Elizabeth needs to pretend that she is a Scottish heiress and the betrothed of Colonel Richard Fitzwilliam who is also a spy. While attending a house party to solve their case, Elizabeth encounters the Colonel's cousin, Mr Fitzwilliam Darcy of Pemberley. Darcy is instantly enchanted by Elizabeth. It is the first time that he is envious of his cousin. But as the Colonel seems not to honor the promises he made to his betrothed, Darcy becomes outraged and tries to protect Elizabeth on his own - even from Richard. Elizabeth is also fascinated by the handsome Mr Darcy from Derbyshire but she can't risk being personally involved in a case. Will Darcy try to get to know his cousin's enchanting betrothed better? What will he do when he learns of Elizabeth's true identity? Is there a chance for future happiness?
The book was very well written by the author Iris Lim. The story is rather short but there was nothing lacking. Due to the length you can read it in one one setting if you like.
I enjoyed the story and Elizabeth's and Jane's engagement as spies. That was something totally new for me and I enjoyed the coolness of the two ladies very much. In this book we mostly learn about Elizabeth's activities because Jane is in the background as Elizabeth's maid. Elizabeth is very professional and the Colonel's equal as spy.
I was a bit annoyed about the Colonel. Elizabeth worked more professionally as the Colonel, he let personal matters influence his profession and in such a way that he attracts the suspicion of his cousin Darcy. Yes, Elizabeth is also affected by personal matters, her beginning feelings for Darcy, but she still works in such a professional way that no one notices anything untoward.
Darcy acts very protective in this variation, even when Elizabeth is not his bride but the Colonel's. He even tries to protect her from the Colonel because he doesn't want her to be hurt by anyone. That was really sweet of Darcy. I enjoyed his protectiveness and his care for Elizabeth very much. Due to this there is much page time for Darcy and Elizabeth because they come to know each other better during the house party and spend a great deal of time together. I like the development of their relationship very much and that they *surprise surprise* find their happily ever after at the end of the story.
If you like to know how Elizabeth and the Colonel try to solve a case as spies and why Darcy tries to interfere you should definitely read this excellent book.
I highly recommend it.

His is a very interesting and unique pride and prejudice variation. I really enjoyed the new characters introduced to us and the entertaining plot twits that kept me engaged. The ending was lovely.
Following the death of Mr Bennet, his family is left in straightened circumstances.
The eldest Bennet sisters, Jane and Elizabeth, contemplate paid employment to support the family.
They are intrigued when their uncle Philips, a country solicitor, turns out to be a recruiter for the Crown.
They accept positions as agents of the Crown, who are tasked with gathering information when in Society.
They prove themselves talented.
Their latest assignment has Elizabeth acting as an heiress, betrothed to fellow agent, Colonel Richard Fitzwilliam, and Jane working as her lady's maid.
Attending a house party, they will be seeking a collaborator with the French, from a carefully selected group of guests.
Their hosts are Richard's family who are the Earl and Countess of Matlock.
His family is a little shocked at the sudden betrothal, but always knew that as a second son, he needed to marry a fortune.
Cousin Fitzwilliam Darcy is highly suspicious of Elizabeth but also horrified that Richard is seemingly neglecting his betrothed.
As Elizabeth and Richard try to complete the assignment, they have to work around Darcy who is either interfering or helping (escorting Elizabeth, when solitude would be more compatible with surveillance)!
An enjoyable story with a good mix of the serious, amusing, exasperating and romantic!
I received a free copy of this book from the author and am voluntarily leaving a review. All views expressed are my own.
I have to be honest- I love Jane Austen’s books, and could never really figure out why people would want to use her characters in new storylines. It just felt… awkward… UNTIL I read this cute P&P mixup! Lim has kept the brooding, dutiful personality of Darcy and the brilliant charm and “fine eyes” of Elizabeth, and woven them into a completely new situation. It is fun to see new obstacles to their relationship, and the preordained love that overcomes them. I really enjoyed their banter and chaste passion. My only problem now is to make room on my TBR list for more of Lim’s JAFF! I received a complimentary advance copy of this book, and was not required to post a review.

As an Austen fan and loving all things regency I loved this story
It was amusing seeing Elizabeth and the world famous Darcy from a different perspective
I could imagine Lizzy in a such a role alongside her sister her wit and intellect finally being used her father would have been amused and appalled in equal measure
I loved the romantic side of hers and Darcy’s nature in this story and find myself wondering if these escapades went on
Try to imagine Elizabeth and Jane as spies for the Crown, not only trying to root out traitors, but spying on private citizens for crimes that should have been handled by private investigators, solicitors and magistrates. For some reason, Colonel Fitzwilliam's brother, the earl's heir, is a baron, instead of a viscount, in this variation.
Richard is also a spy, with Elizabeth posing as his fiancée at a house party. Jane is her lady's maid. The mission is to find the traitor who is supplying arms to Napoleon. Included in the house party at the earl's country estate are a farmer, a tradesman, and a baronet and his wife, along with Darcy, who isn't privy to the secrecy, and Richard's brother. The three suspects are given names, but there is no character development, no reason given for their being suspected of smuggling and treason. Elizabeth spends her time there prancing around in the garden with Darcy. She's the only single woman at the house party, so she is subjected to leering and suggestive comments. Darcy doesn't understand why Richard doesn't act like a real suitor and protect her.
Why were the three men invited to the house party in the first place? Why were they suspects? Did they know the Earl of Matlock? Didn't everyone think it odd that only one single woman was invited? Why wasn't Darcy told the reason for the occasion? If they planned everything so well, wouldn't they have realized his ignorance of the mission could be a problem? Richard is informed about which suspect is the culprit, but who told him? There were so many loose ends, the whole thing unraveled for me. The pixilated cover is a good representation of my mind while reading this variation.
Mr. Bennett has died, leaving his family dependent on relatives for housing and support. It quickly becomes clear that Elizabeth and Jane must find employment in order to contribute to their mother and siblings’ upkeep. When their uncle suggests an unexpected outlet for them to pursue, the sisters readily agree. It isn’t long before Elizabeth finds herself in the unusual position of pretending to be engaged to Colonel Fitzwilliam with Jane doing her part as Elizabeth’s ladies’ maid. They must work together at the colonel’s parents’ house party to pursue a traitor to the Crown. It isn’t long before Mr. Darcy notices that something is off between the two supposed lovebirds and takes it upon himself to ensure that Elizabeth remains safe.
This was such a sweet variation on Pride and Prejudice. I loved watching Elizabeth as the center of attention and Darcy quickly becoming both protective and jealous. There’s a bit of forbidden romance (or so Darcy thinks) and mystery in this tale. Mostly, this is a delicious glimpse of Regency house parties and their dynamics.
This book focuses primarily on Elizabeth and Darcy and finding the culprit.. I would have enjoyed seeing a bit more of Jane’s below stairs snooping, but perhaps that will come in another book. Other characters are delightful if mostly kept in the background.
I highly recommend this book. It will keep you engaged and leave you enjoying a happily ever after.
I received an advanced reader copy of this book from the author through Book Sirens. I thank her for her generosity, but it had no effect on this review. All opinions in this review reflect my true and honest reactions to reading this book.
I enjoyed this Pride and Prejudice story with a spy theme by Iris Lim. The story flowed easily, had humor, great characters, and Mr. Darcy investigating the spies!
After the death of their father, the Bennet family is destitute. Luckily, Uncle Phillips offers them positions with the government as spies, which will yield an income. Their latest assignment is to attend a house party. Elizabeth is pretending to be an heiress and engaged to Richard, while Jane is posing as her maid.
Darcy is suspicious from the start about this betrothal and is attracted to Elizabeth. I adored how Darcy reacts to his cousin Richard's behavior; his protective nature and honorable demeanor were delightful.
Although there is attraction between Elizabeth and Darcy, she has to hide her real purpose at the party, which made for a fun, attention-grabbing story. Once again, Iris Lim has given us a delightful tale, her writing skills spot on, and I look forward to her next story.
Iris Lim has skillfully intertwined elements of mystery and romance set against the backdrop of a classic favorite. Her portrayal of beloved characters in novel circumstances makes this book a refreshing read for both Jane Austen enthusiasts and newcomers alike. The blend of espionage and romance keeps the reader engaged till the very end, making it a must-read for anyone looking for a captivating twist on a timeless classic.

Iris Lim’s newest Pride and Prejudice retelling is a complete and total delight. After the loss of their father, the Bennet women are turned out of their home and dependent on relatives for their keep. Jane and Lizzy decide to get jobs to support the family. Their uncle, a secret agent of the government offers them jobs in military intelligence. The two girls are to go undercover with Colonel Richard Fitzwilliam to find a traitor who is selling guns to the French.
With Elizabeth posing as his fiancé and Jane as her maid, the three attend a house party his mother is throwing a their family estate. She is in on the masquerade and has invited all of the suspects. His cousin, Darcy, however, has no idea what’s going on.
With enough misunderstandings and complications to satisfy any Jane Austen fan, this book is a terrific read. It’s fun, romantic and has enough of a mystery to keep you turning the pages. The characters are so well drawn. Ms. Lim has kept the personalities of the Bennets and Darcy and his cousin so you feel like this is really the way P&P could have happened.
I received an advance review copy of this book and am enthusiastically leaving this 5-star review.
"His Cousin's Betrothed" was an interesting twist of Jane Austen's "Pride & Prejudice". I found it to be a heartwarming romance with lovely descriptions. Elizabeth and Jane find employment when their father dies, leaving the family impoverished. Their uncle recruits them to work undercover for the Crown. When Richard, an intelligence officer, shows up engaged to a lovely woman (Elizabeth), who is supposed to be an heiress, the family is surprised. However, when Richard shows no interest in his betrothed and is seen spending time with her maid (Jane), Darcy decides to investigate his cousin's intentions. Will staying close to his cousin's fiance cause certain feelings between them? Can Darcy protect her from Richard's poor intentions and behavior? I enjoyed Darcy's protectiveness towards Elizabeth, though he feels guilty because she is his cousin's betrothed. There are several swoonworthy moments, and I am glad their descriptions are clean. I rarely read or enjoy Jane Austen variations, but I'm so glad I read "His Cousin's Betrothed". Ms. Lim did a wonderful job, and I fully recommend this book! I received a complimentary ARC of this book and have voluntarily given my honest opinion in this review.
Another winner by Iris Lim, which is no exception. The retelling of Pride & Prejudice whereby Mr Bennett has died, and Mr Collins has thrown the family out of their beloved home. Destitute and looking for a way to earn a wage to support the family, Jane and Elizabeth are “hired” by Uncle Philips to work as spies for the government.
Following several successful assignments, this next one sees Elizabeth posing as a wealthy heiress and fiancé to Colonel Richard Fitzwilliam (“Richard”) while Jane is her lady’s maid, to spy on the servants in the home. The party has all the usual guests including their suspects. Richard’s mother who is throwing the ball at the family home, is in on the mission. However, Darcy, one of the invited guests is unaware that the engagement is false. Elizabeth and Darcy are terribly attracted to each other, but Lizzie must keep her feelings under wraps and her wits about her.
Lovely story with a delightful blend of espionage, romance, humour, and all-round enjoyable read. I received an ARC from the publishers and Book Sirens and submit my honest review voluntarily.
Well written, lots of action, intrigue, society, suspense, family, villains, twists and drama. Elizabeth is a young lady who has lost her father and needs to find a job to assist in the care of her mother and younger sisters. They will move to into their Uncle's house till they can find the jobs they need. He explains that he may have a job for them and a way to make money. She and her sister Jane are asked to help find the man or men who are smuggling and selling weapons - treason to the king. They are to work with another agent, Richard, who is also a spy. Richard and Elizabeth fake an engagement while Jane is to be a maid. They use a house party at his mother's to help find the answers. Richard's cousin, Darcy sees Elizabeth and starts to fall for her while Richard falls for Jane. Together the three of them work to find the answers needed. Darcy tries to protect Elizabeth by confronting Richard which throws some curves into their plans. A great who dunit. Curl up and enjoy this story. Would strongly recommend it.
I received this story and leave this unbiased, honest review.
I adored this vagary. We have Darcy spying on our spies. Our spies are all wishing to be as truthful as they can with each other while carrying out their roles. Darcy is wishing to be honorable for everyone's sake as he finds himself coming to both admire his cousin's betrothed and feel protective of her.
I would have preferred the Earl and Countess' son been titled a viscount instead of a baron, but he is only mentioned by title a few times in the story. It was distracting for me, but didn't really impact the enjoyment I had in the tale.
I appreciated the subtle humor in many scenes. Their Uncle Philips' 'side job' for the Home Office and him convincing Elizabeth and Jane to take up positions in service to the crown to help support the Widow Bennet and their younger sisters was unique.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. I definitely recommend this quick, fun read where espionage leads to a happily ever after.
This Pride and Prejudice variation by Iris Lim is a fun look at our favorite characters Lizzy, Jane, Col. Fitzwilliam, and Darcy. The plot involves Lizzy and Jane working undercover for the Crown with Col. Fitzwilliam. Lizzy and Jane needed to work after their father died and their mother’s brother who worked as a spy offered them employment.
Darcy first meets Lizzy when she shows up at his aunt’s house ostensibly as the fiancé of his cousin Col. Fitzwilliam. He is at first suspicious of who Lizzy purports to be but soon finds her enchanting, and unhappily is very attracted to her.
Iris treats these iconic characters with care and has woven a compelling and romantic story that is obviously different from the original but nevertheless an enjoyable read. I liked the Jane subplot as well.

I loved this short and sweet Pride & Prejudice variation! I really love when an author gives us familiar characters who act in the ways we expect, but I also love when they drop us in to something new. I love the idea of a spy story, and usually I have seen them where Darcy is an agent for the Crown rather than Elizabeth. Elizabeth entering Darcy's orbit and him thinking she was more "appropriate" for someone of his station eliminated many of the foot-in-mouth moments and we just get a great connection and wonderful dynamic between ODC.
One thing I always feel like Iris does is build us a whole world with an astonishing amount of detail with less page time. This story was able to be read in just a couple hours and still leave me fulfilled.
I received a complimentary copy of the author's story to read and review. All thoughts contained here are my own.
It begins with a very sad premise: Mr Bennet has died and Jane and Elizabeth seek employment to support the other Bennet ladies who are residing with the Phillipses. No one is truly happy with their living arrangements so when Uncle Phillips offers another 'home' for Jane and Elizabeth, they happily take it.
In their new situation, they must mingle with the bon ton to ferret out traitors, hence the title. While acting the part of Colonel Fitzwilliam's betrothed, Elizabeth must figure out which man is selling arms to Napoleon. The romance between the various couples becomes more interesting with each chapter.
I enjoyed the banter, the 'honorableness', the fun and fury between the attendees of the house party. There is an editing error or two but otherwise, very well done.
A lovely afternoon's read. It has some very clever things happening. Mr. Bennet is dead, and the family cast out to live with the Phillips; an uncomfortable situation. Jane and Elizabeth need to find work, and as it turns out, Mr. Phillips is secretly an agent for the crown and recruits them both to go to London and do "intelligence gathering" amongst the ton. Their next mission takes place at a house party, with Elizabeth as an heiress and Jane as her maid. Elizabeth is posing as the betrothed of Colonel Fitzwilliam. Darcy is there also, and objects to the way his cousin treats Elizabeth - he is not protective or romantic enough to please Darcy, who becomes enamored of Elizabeth. After finding and arresting the traitor, Richard is knighted and marries Jane, while Darcy and Elizabeth also manage to come together.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
A well-written and well-edited Pride and Prejudice variation that surely satisfies. One can expect no less from this author whose previous works exemplified and impressed.
The brevity of this story is also an added bonus; although its shortness is not off-putting at all. One can only hope that there is more romance to be had. But one can understand the nature of the story requires a foundation that focuses on the Bennet sisters’ circumstances, prompting them to espionage and pretense.
Despite that, Elizabeth and Jane Bennet both found their happily ever after from the most deserving of men. This reader, and probably many other JAFF fans, would have it any other way.
I received this as an ARC, and I am voluntarily leaving a review.
His Cousin’s Betrothed by Iris Lim is a wonderful, easy reading short story and perfect for a cold winter’s day when you can snuggle up with a warm cup of tea. Mr. Bennet has died, leaving the Bennet women destitute. Uncle Philips helps Jane and Elizabeth become government agents to earn some income. This puts them in the path of Col. Fitzwilliam as they work with him on an assignment at his mother’s house party. Elizabeth meets Darcy, but has to hide her real purpose at the party. This story grabbed my attention, and I was almost sorry to have it end.

Cute story about two sisters trying to save their family after their father died. Their uncle sends them to the foreign ministry to help spy on local enemies to the crown. They have done well with their assignments and now are on a more difficult one. Elizabeth has to pretend to be engaged to the second son of a family (who works for the ministry) that is hosting an unusual gathering (it includes their suspects). Her sister acts as her maid to hear things from the servants.
There are the typical touchy situations and many surprises.
It was an enjoyable read.

Once again, author Iris Lim comes through with a great Regency!
I have read a few Regencies by Iris Lim and have enjoyed everything I’ve read. This story is no exception to that. Normally, I don’t like reading variations of other books, in this case, Pride and Prejudice. However, there was enough difference between the original and this version, that I thoroughly enjoyed it. I really enjoyed that the Bennet sisters became spies in order to help support their mother and siblings after their father died. This is a story I can unreservedly recommend to all lovers of Sweet Regencies!
His Cousin's Betrothed is a sweet, light and short novella that I enjoyed very much. There is intrigue, suspense and secret keeping which causes some angst to our dear couple. Elizabeth, Darcy and Col. Fitzwilliam are shining in the story. Darcy is ever the gentleman, gallant and protective. Elizabeth is smart, witty and clever and brave. There are also some original characters like Lady Matlock and Col. Fitzwilliam's older brother, who is very amusing. It is a lovely, charming and a romantic read! I can't recommend it enough! I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Not badly written but too short to do any justice to the premise. There is no logic to any actions the characters do and the plot also moves too fast without any explanation or development. There is no reason why Richard didn't tell Darcy that Elizabeth is only pretending to be a finance, even though both parents know. Richard cannot wait until the party is over to pursue Jane, so he continues to chase after while everyone is supposed to think that he is engaged to Elizabeth. The spying plot is also non sensical and the guy just tells everything suddenly to Elizabeth without any development. It's all nonsensical and the writing didn't affect me in any way
Fun read with love and mystery involved in the story. Interesting to see how 2 single young women worked for ‘The Crown’ as spies. Sisters Jane and Elizabeth both wanting to help out their mother after the loss of their father with living expenses since they are now peniless.
While working in these positions they each met a young man Darcy and Richard who became their husbands. Found the story intriguing and kept me interested until end.

An entertaining and quick P&P AU read, perfect for our bussy days.
A more adventurous AU where Mr. Bennet dies and our girls resort to unorthodox ways to keep the family afloat. Very different from your typical JAFF, yet the author makes it work while maintaining the character in character.
I love stories where the colonel is around to make our guy jealous, and this one is perfect. (Darcy wants to protect him... Then he want to sock him 😆)
If you love P&P & spies, you NEED to read this.

The angst was not what quite in the form that I was expecting (I find triangles in one form or another stress me out - especially when I found Darcy and Elizabeth so likeable). The backdrop for the story might be a bit OTT, but it serves as just that - and adds intrigue and drama in the personal relationships as you might imagine. I don't think that I can say much more without spoiling the read for you. As always, I find Iris Lim's writing engaging and convincing. Recently, I've been immersed in Regency books, and I've just finished listening to the audiobook of Pride and Prejudice. While it was initially tough to get into, largely due to my familiarity with the original, I ended up enjoying it. It's vital to recognize that this is an adaptation, and instead of drawing comparisons to the original, one should approach it as a creative reimagining. The most important thing is to simply appreciate the book.
