Midlife Recorder #5

Code Yellow in Gretna Green

Rate this book
In Gateway terminology, a "Code Yellow" signifies a missing person. King Troels plans to hide in Yggdrasil, the sacred Viking Tree, so the Recorder cannot summon him.

But forty-one years of suppressed fury is about to burst out of Niki McKnight after the Vikings' treatment of Rollo. Her lava-hot rage and desire for justice on behalf of all the women who filed petitions against the former King, sets our key characters off on a new path.

The resulting power struggles in Viking bring new faces and fresh problems into the Gateway but Dola and Finn have their own issues.

The stakes are heightened further during the inaugural meeting of Breanna's hilariously unconventional royal book club, while Aysha faces an unexpected predicament with Autumn.

In Code Yellow in Gretna Green, Niki discovers what happens when a furious Recorder is pushed too far and heads into Angry Town.

This Series Is A MUST Read For All Women

This is not a CHRISTIAN book series, so if you only read books about Jesus, you won't like it, but you should read it anyway. It contains valid information all women should have, but don't.

Code Yellow is a wonderful continuation of Nicki McKnight's adventure into the 7 rhelms of the Rainbow Gate, with all the important life lessons every woman wishes she knew when she was 16, but some women never learn at all.

The 7 Rhelms of The Rainbow Gate includes gods, dogs, cats, coos, fairies, dragons, brownies, piskies, unicorns, a sentient house and all sorts of other people.

These books, the series, not just the first book, is a MUST read for all women. It talks a lot about detecting the types of men (ahem... people) to avoid having relationships with, and why, in a palatable, fictitious form. Every chapter starts with a quote from a fictitious self help book, (and are ilustrated within that chapter) most if which are written by the citizens of the 7 rhelms of The Rainbow Gateway. I want to read all of these books, but alas, they are not available unless you can travel to the rhelms, so to get even the smidgen of the wisdom of these books, you have to read the series.

Really like the play on the genre in Nikis approach to everything, and the acknowledgement that violence isn't for everyone, even if you can wield magic. Fun, will definitely wait for the next book!

I've really enjoyed this whole series so far, but this book... *chef's kiss* I can truly appreciate when justice is rightfully served and loved that we got a closer look at Rollo and his back story

Fantastic series!!

Each book opens up exciting new adventures. I absolutely love the characters. The unique personalities are intriguingly refreshing. Most of them (with a few exceptions) you can't help but love warts and all. I have enjoyed seeing how Niki, Dola, and HRH characters have evolved. The growth of the members of the Recorders staff as well as other key characters into the "person" they are now has been interesting. Actually most of them are still in the process of juggling traditional norms with their discovery of self as they gain understanding. Niki offers new possibilities for growth and change. The growing pains to accept and integrate modern norms into the realms has been and will be interesting. Niki is steadfast in her determination to make much needed changes in the Gateway. Changes that will affect the realms from the rulers to their citizens. I can't wait to see how Niki, Dola, and her faithful crew wade through the stress and strife this will create. There is a time and place to honor tradition but there is a necessity to grow and change as well. Niki has come to this realization through her own growth as she navigated and overcame the hardships and experiences in her life. Life lessons tend to be excellent teachers! Niki faces struggles in implementing changes in procedures in the Gateway as well as those by the Recorder. Her goal is to insure balance is not only obtained but maintained in all the realms. Thus bringing them the opportunity for a peaceful coexistence. I think it will be interesting to see how she goes about getting not only their attention but understanding and acceptance that "the set in stone" antiquated ways are just that antiquated! They can be improved upon. I look forward to one Hello Billy of a ride for them all!

Another wonderful story!

Linzi Day is seriously becoming my favorite author. Her books are fantastic and this latest one is so good! Niki is an awesome main character and Dola is amazing and fascinating. The mix of different cultures and beliefs, the drama, and the love story come together so seamlessly that it's almost impossible to put the book down. I highly recommend the whole series and I have already preordered the next one.

Wow! This series gets better with every book. This is a huge book, close to 800 pages but I read it all within 24 hours! I just couldn't put it down even though I didn't want it to end. Whew! The Author has built an amazing world in this series with phenomenal characters and amazing plots and action. I can't recommend it enough! Just start with the first book and get lost in the world of the Recorder.

good

Picking up from the cliffhanger in the last book, (which is quickly dealt with) we continue Niki’s very busy week(s) dealing with the arbitrations against Troels, and a lot of issues in Viking, while she is also learning a lot about the new man in her life.
Niki seems to finally be comfortable in her new role, and starts to make it her own.

It’s a hefty book, clocking in at just over 700 pages in my e-reader, but it seems to go by quickly as Niki has a heck of a lot going on. Definitely not a standalone, as I’ve already mentioned it continues from where the previous book left off- so yes, you do need to have read those first.
It’s an enjoyable read though, with coos, arbitrations, dragons, otherworldly politics, shenanigans, too many people demanding time… and even a small holiday for Niki!
It’s an engrossing read, with plenty of action, and some magic. HRH is doing some interesting stuff in this book, and we have some rather intriguing hints about her, plus some very interesting hints about the future. I say hints, because they’re mostly my suspicions right now, but I’m looking forward to seeing where it all heads.
An entertaining series, this is a great read for PWF fans, and urban fantasy lovers alike.

This series has been strong, intriguing, entertaining and enthralling from the beginning and Code Yellow definitely doesn’t disappoint.

Niki, the main female character, shows so much character development and she is very relatable. After being browbeaten and downtrodden in the past, the role of Recorder sees her find strength, confidence and power, balanced with understanding, compassion and empathy. She opens herself more to her powers and learns to trust herself and her feelings.

We also learn far more about other characters and see them develop too, as Niki and her team work towards righting many wrongs, and supporting those who need recognition, justice and retribution. It’s time for people to stop burying their heads in the sand and for the Viking Realm to change.

I absolutely love the storytelling, the character development, the bonds of loyalty and relationships, built in this series of so much depth and so many layers. It was amazing to have a longer book this time and it’s well worth setting aside some uninterrupted time, to really delve into the story and absorb all that it has to say.

LOVING this series! And, as anyone who has read its previous books knows, it isn’t a high action, kick-butt heroine type of book. But rather, it is an extremely addictive and warm series about a 40ish woman who, after the death of her grandmother, is thrust into the role of arbitrator/moderator of seven different realms - something she knew nothing about beforehand. It has magic and humor and conflict galore, just on a more human and endearing level.

This specific book did get a bit long and rambley, though. And I was ready to shove the book at the wall with Rollo’s constant “I don’t want to deal with it now, I’ll do it tomorrow” attitude. That expression was literally repeated infinitum through over 80% of the 776 PAGE book. Even with a kinda reason, it made him look weak and wimpy, which (I hope) he is not going to be going forward. Happily it finally resolved at the end and everything is left looking peachy in the Gateway and in Niki’s life… at least for now. :)

And, I’m still reveling in this fun world and watching its characters grow. So, I’ll be (im)patiently waiting for the next installment to publish!

Well, damn. Now I'm all caught up to current on this series, and I'm pouting a bit because I'm not ready to be done. My face has been glued to my Kindle since I started the series last week.

I really, really love this series. I've tagged it cozy, but I'm not sure it qualifies in the way that most people use it. But for me, I tagged it that way because it has a slice-of-life vibe. This book is very long, and rambly, it not once did it drag for me, because I love the characters and I loved riding along as they worked through the events that occur in the week or so of time that passes in this book. Niki (FMC) had a small mountain of stuff to work out.

Her relationship with her decades-long BFF, which was suffering some strain simply due to how fast Niki's life was changing in her new Recorder position, and her being unable to keep her BFF up with it ... nor with the pace of the changes Niki herself was going through as she grew into her role. It was lovely seeing these two strong women adjust to their new reality and keep their bond.

Her new relationship with Rollo - and boy, I called that (I'll mark the book highlight as a spoiler). It's a big leap for her to take, though the same is true for him. I really do love their relationship, even though it moves very fast. Perk of the soul bond, as well as a silver lining to the chaotic situation (surviving chaos with someone is a surefire way to forge a quicker relationship than normal, and makes for a lovely platform from which they can grow).

The massive, shitty mess of the Viking realm. I shared Niki's opinion about a lot of it, including her frustration that these people were all so adamant that someone else must solve all their shit, while sitting on their own asses. I think where Niki landed it was perfect, and compassionate...which I respect, because I would have struggled to be as compassionate as she was.

Though I don't agree with her non-violence plan going forward, personally. For the people who were punished violently in this book, it was 100% what they deserved. Those monsters visited so much violence on others, that it feels like justice to me.

Also, what is going on with the coos?!

But back to the cozy tag. I use it to denote a book that isn't about epic battles (despite what I said about violence above, there's no battling in this book), but rather a more evenly-paced slice of life story. Yes, there are arcs that come to a big, climactic finish, but the overall energy is safe, if that makes any sense. I don't worry that Niki will die, or that people she loves will die. I am just riveted to how she's going to solve such a thorny problem - in each book, that's the primary driver of the story. And I think I'm going to amend my book 1 review - now that the frantic blitz of reading is over - to talk about this a bit for folks thinking about dipping a toe in the water.

Anyway, it was exactly what I wanted right now in a story, and I loved it to pieces. Can't wait for more.

It reads well, it is entertainingly written and hard to put down. Satisfying and wish-fulfilling in many ways.
But the weaknesses of the first volumes continue here, and I find them increasingly irritating. FMC is still always 'missing something', and so many conversations are started without being finished. Especially conversations about important things, questions that are urgent. It makes the story confusing and restless because there are always things that need to be answered without people taking the time to do so.
I cannot count the times FMC 'really' changes and starts taking responsibility for things. Every time it seems to be new.
And I find the many mentions of Apple devices a bit like advertising and that's annoying. Even the commercial is used!
Every coffee and every pie or good meal is mentioned in detail. So it makes the reader definitely hungry and craving for a good coffee.
I like the cat. FMC does not and I see no reason for that.

Review

Even though only weeks have passed in the actual plot of the book, I swear we seem to have gone on a decade-long journey. Or rather the Recorder, Niki, seems to have done that. Such a beautiful transformation she has had.

There are subtleties and nuances in this book that even I didn't catch unless pointed out to me by Niki, which as a reader is refreshing and definitely food for thought. Putting boundaries is key to living a successful and happy life, and this book has taught me the most real way to do that! Kudos.

As to the plot, a good chunk of it is dedicated to the blossoming (but urgent?) Bond between Rollo and Niki, though I did predict that; the resolution of the Viking realm; with some pages and paragraphs given to Dai and his illness.

I do like Rollo, but I can't seem to picture him as the same age as Niki. There I think the author errored, by not clearly defining his 'two' lives and 'two' Rollos. The other thing for me was the fluctuations between the behavior of characters who seemed okay enough at first. I do understand what Linzi was trying to do, but I felt a disconnect because there was no foreshadowing in thought and expressions of something else brewing or lurking.

Anyhow, Niki and Dola were great. They have more challenges ahead, but I know they will do swimmingly.

The book and series itself are solid. It slowly draws you in, coaxing you to the next page. It makes you want to have a cup of coffee and sit with it for hours. Which is why I am through the whole thing in just a couple of days. Lol.

A hundred percent recommend for a cozy day.

The trend that started in the previous book - Seeing Red in Gretna Green - continues here. The series is definitely heading towards the darker, bloodier territory, which is an unwelcome contrast from the light and bubbly vibe of the earlier books of the series. Besides, this one was too damn long. I didn't enjoy it as much as I did the earlier books and I'm not sure I want to continue the series. I haven't bought the next book (it's not published yet anyway) and I'm not sure I will. I'm upset. It feels almost like the author gave me a promise of joy in the first few books but decided to renege on her promise later in the series.

4.5 stars. I stuck with it to get caught up to current before moving on to other books as well as to stay close to Rollo ;) One peeve, I did feel like Rollo's healing took place too fast. It's like he woke up to complete fresh health and it didn't get to register with anyone how close he was to death. He also seemed to just shrug it off.

This is an interesting series. Its cozy but strives to be empowering with its quotes:
"The second, toxic guilt, is a feeling of responsibility for things beyond your control. Victims of abuse often receive the additional unwelcome gift of guilt from their abuser.
The third, existential guilt, is also a feeling of responsibility, but this time for things that exist and you perceive them to be wrong: injustice, danger to unknown innocents, damage to your realm. Your inability to take effective action can be debilitating.
And the last and perhaps the most insidious is cultural or religious guilt. Doing things in opposition to the cultural or religious norms and mores you were raised with often causes an unhelpful amount of guilt."

All the books are peppered with these, each story has its own book it draws quotes from. Some are interesting, like above, but most I just glance over. Does it add to the story? Not sure.

It is also fantasy- with Dola the sentient "house", a 7 fold bond with a Viking hunk billionaire (really? could he have just been really wealthy?) and lots of everyday problems to fill its pages.

To me- the brilliance of this story is all the looping storylines between all the characters while balancing time travel and prophecies. For an author to manage all that? Props to them!

Highlights & Spoilers:
Niki: Because I could see Angry Town in my rearview mirror as I headed towards Blind Fury County.

Dealing with the Hobs:
She spat in her hand and held it out for me to shake. I considered it, and my inner clean freak rebelled. Also, I suspected it was a test. I handed her a wet wipe from my top drawer. She grinned, used it, and then I shook her hand.

Bingo- this was a cute addition:
Mabon gave her a seated bow. “A good point you make, Marguerite. So what do we do with him now? Many fine oubliettes I have …”
We all ticked that box off.
-------
He continued, “Bluddy Vikings, nothing but trouble for centuries. Put a stop to it, we should.”
We all ticked that box off and realised someone was close to a line.

Fun characters:
In response to the glare she aimed at me, I added, “Not you, Rhiannon, a different problem.”
“I’m not a problem. I’m a flaming delight,” followed me down the path.

Ethical problems with the Vikings:
And she is intelligent, so how can I help the stupid ones?”

Rollo:
Rollo got his phone out, poked it, and frowned. Then he said those three lovely words again. For me, after being married to Nick Pollock, they were not so much music to my ears, as an entire symphony played by a full orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall on the last night of the proms. “You are right!”

And this little beauty had appropriate timing in my life:
‘You can have the job done exactly as you want it done, or you can have someone else do it. But never both.’

Lots happening here

There is a lot that happens here in Book six which picks up directly where book 5 ends. I’m so grateful that I didn’t have to wait for a 6th book to come out! Niki becomes more sure of herself as the Recorder and she is inspired by events in this book to truly think about how she wants to go on and what message she needs to have for the realms. Ongoing storylines get resolved in this book, there’s quite a bit of violence, and when all is said and done Niki and Rollo finally get to head out on the holiday they want. I’m looking forward to where we go from here.

love the books!

Ok I do love these books but.. this whole thing of cutting conversations off mid sentence is really annoying. I don’t want to be told about the conversation later I want to experience it. Same with Niki and her thoughts or decisions. If she’s figured something out, or decided what to do, then having her act totally clueless and directionless to later reveal that she had a plan all along, is not cool. Not for the reader at least. We’re reading her story and that means we should experience her story. Not be told she decided this or realized that much later. And the halfway bits of ideas or conversations are just confusing and annoying. I’m loving the world, story, and characters so for now I’ll keep reading but that may change if this keeps getting worse. Also why in the heck doesn’t she want to know about the coos?!?! I have to find out what the deal is there!

Wonderful

I really enjoy this series. The writing is excellent and the story keeps getting better and better. Niki has faced many new things. Sometimes scary sometimes wonderful. She doesn't always know what to do. With the help of her friends and her growing confidence she figures it out. Do yourself a favor and start at the beginning. It's worth it!

Amazing

When I first started the Gretna Green series, I was about halfway through the first book when I took a short break to text my daughter, in all Caps, " YOU MUST READ THIS SERIES" A few days later, I texted her again after finishing the third book. This time, I told her not to start the series. For a very simple reason. You see, I am retired and could afford to be so completely immersed into these books that I spent multiple nights up, reading way past midnight. She, bless her heart, still works full time, and has two young ones at home. She's going to need to wait until she has a chunk of vacation time saved up because I know that she will be just as enthralled and transported as I have been.
I just finished "Code Yellow," and I've put in a pre-order for the next book. I don't know how I'm going to make it until December. (It's only July as I write this.)
Thank you, Linzi Day, for the most enchanting, hilarious, thought-provoking, thoroughly enjoyable books that I have read in ages.

A series that started with a slightly bumfundled but relatable MC has devolved into a self-righteous, condescending MC. In an attempt to take her "power" back, both literally and figuratively, a character that was a bit broken, lost and trying to figure out her place in the world has turned into a know it all, with bad manners and a whiny inner voice. In a book that removed any enjoyable character for the most part (HRH, Mabon, ect.), you are left with mostly Niki and Rollo. You actually feel really bad for Rollo, though the author made him almost dumb in an attempt to make Niki seem smarter. Niki is also rude to nearly everyone except for Dola. For example, she finds out that Rollo and her are bonded and immediately runs off with her best friend for a vacation. When she returns to Rollo, his friend shows up, and she cries because she wants time with him. The entire book is in that vein, how Niki thinks it is acceptable to treat people and how everyone else should be treating her because she is the recorder. Her best friend hasn't heard from her for nearly a week and is trying to contact her because she is worried. She then tells her BF (of literal decades) off because she is super busy and important. Someone who can literally time travel can not find the time to send her best friend more than a selfie and proceeds to chew her out because she was trying to contact her. Niki has turned into such an unlikable character. I was so disgusted with this book that the ONLY reason I decided not to DNF was because I'm in a book competition with my sister and neice. I will not be continuing this series. It's a shame, really, because it started interestingly, and the supporting characters were enjoyable. However, the author has lessened the side character roles and drastically increased the MC role. The MC role that gives major ICK.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Looooooove! 💛😁

Wow, there’s a LOT that happens in Code Yellow! It’s full on for Nikki and I devoured and savoured every last word like a menopausal woman who’s been denied cake for a year then let loose in a bakery - oh, wait, I am that woman, tho it’s been a week not a year . . . I digress . . . 🤷🏼‍♀️😂 Anyhoo, what an amazing addition to the Midlife Recorder series; honestly, it just gets better and better as Nikki’s journey and growth (plus Rollo’s, also) progresses. There are so many wonderful things that happen, eventually and long overdue in some of those cases, but one of those was something I sussed a while ago and I was so happy Nikki finally realised. Not going to do any spoilers, but I could imagine Mabon saying “well Nik-a-lula, long enough it took you, it did bach” 😂🌈 Superb writing, as always, with a few teasers for future problems in other realms for the Recorder to address in the rest of the series. So many good things in this book and I can’t wait for the next one - but I will, obvs, as these books are so worth waiting for! 😁💛🙏🏽

I'm not an insta-love fan, but I was so annoyed with Dai's character after the last book that I'm happy that Rollo appeared. I think this is a solid book in the series, especially since Linzi made Troels an absolute scumbag.

I've been pretty solidly four stars for this series, but I really like the treatment given to the Troels storyline and the developing relationship between Niki and Rollo and the realization of what it's going to take from everyone to make things right in the Viking realm.

Niki has made the decision that she was pushed too far out of her personal code of honor with dealings in the Red Celt kingdom, and she starts to take a bit of ownership for her own decisions. Good friend Ashya starts to lose some of her badass-ness about moving through life, but it's part of what makes Niki juggling so many issues such a delicate balancing act that isn't always perfectly successful.

Again, this book is pretty far into a tightly compact timeline series, so this is still for those who've read the previous books. The build-up to the Troels situation was all the prior books, and it's good to finally get that massive issue off the agenda.

Problems solved but so many mysteries

With the help of her friends, Dola, the Book, HRH, and the Power, Niki has learned that the Recorder's job isn't solving problems for people but helping them discover how to solve their own. She must juggle many responsibilities to achieve the outcome beneficial to the most amount of people, including motivating others to step up to fulfill their roles, ending tyrannical activities, facilitating just treatment and punishments by the appropriate authorities, and managing fair trade, communication, and information. Since Niki became the Recorder she is challenged to deal with personal relationships. She changed from being meek and deferential, to assertive and busy, which influences how her best friend relates to her. She must also explore how to navigate through a new unexpected romantic relationship as well. As she struggles through her own challenges, she's still learning there are more mysteries to uncover. What will happen to Dai? What is the role of the dragons? Will the Indigo realm mystery ever be revealed? And what is the issue with the coos?

I totally enjoyed this book and continue to enjoy the series. Day has noted she currently plans 10 books in the series at this time. That doesn't count the short stories available on her website. I plan to read every one. She also apologized for the huge cliffhanger in Book 5. Which was not well received!

I enjoy Day's writing style that is so descriptive you easily feel the emotion and follow the plans. Sometimes the "mind speak" can be a little confusing, but the change in font (to italics) usually minimizes it. I like the growing comradery between the characters and the growing group of friends/colleagues. You'll learn quite a bit about Rolo in this one too as their relationship moves to a new level. Lots of action and self-reflection from most of the characters. Some substantial violence that causes even more decisions by Niki to determine what she wants to make of the Recorder role as she moves forward.

So glad I didn't have to wait!

Because I learned about these incredible books after the first four were finished, I didn't have to wait between these last two. So the cliffhanger for me lasted only as long as it took to download the next book and begin reading. I'm so sorry for those who had to wait!

As I said in a previous review, this storyline has something for everyone. These books are well-written, intelligent, and definitely unique in the paranormal genre. The plot and subplots move quickly, but no details are missed that would leave you confused about what is going on--except for those ongoing questions she has put in there deliberately. (I am anxiously waiting to get the answers abou HRH/the cat!)

If you don't have the discipline to put down a good book to get your work done, or don't have a few hours to devote to reading them straight through, be careful when you pick up the first book in this series. You will be hooked!!

Another great read from this author, she really has a way of making a political fantasy a page turner. Although there were some parts that made it a little too much political and if I am reading a fantasy book, I prefer to stay in the fantasy world.

There was alot of growth in this book with Niki, Rollo and other pertinent characters, I won't say their names because it's better for you to read and find out on your own.

There were a couple parts in the book where it reminded me of a sitcom because the author would say Niki found something out or did something after the fact but we never read about it prior to it happening, so now it has me wondering what else is happening behind the scenes. Since this is a book I feel like you have to tell us everything and not just say it happened.

There is still alot of questions I have but I am hopeful they will get answered in the following books. This is by far one of the most refreshing fantasy reads I have had in a long while.

Love this Series

I have loved other series since I started reading ebooks almost exclusively. This is the first new series I'm going to buy in non-electronic form to read over and over until each new book comes out. This is the only new-ish author to use proper grammar, an excellent vocabulary, great quotes, references, and delicious food (I've looked most of them up and they are real recipes) and almost no errors or typos. I love the characters, the humor, the history, the world building...well, just everything, including her allusions to happy, loving sex, instead of boring, always the same graphic sex scenes many fantasy authors use much too frequently. I want to be Niki, or at least live in her world as one of her friends or Knights. I will now read anything she ever writes.

Ohhhh myyy, best evarrr! Code Yellow is the follow up to that nasty cliffhanger that Linzi Day left us with when Seeing Red ended... And ya' know I absodamnlutely adored it. With the treatment the Viking Warlords gave Rollo, Niki means business she's no longer gonna pussyfoot around the Viking issue... She, the Recorder is gonna take out the garbage starting with the Warlords and finishing with the King!
So yeah get on the garbage truck and grab the book!

Here's some quotes that amused me:

"She can electrify those wrought-iron railings and sink intruders into quicksand and then blow a Force 9 gale at them if she’s in the wrong mood."

"5000 years ago, cats were worshipped as gods. Cats’ manners have never recovered from those complete idiots and their poor judgement."

“Game Optimiser and Developer, remember? Just call me G.O.D.”

The books just keep getting better

What can I say but WOW OMG AND PLEASE DON’T STOP. Usually when you get to the 5th or 6th book you start to feel like you have had enough and want a change. This is not the case with Linzi’s books they go from strength to strength, I am currently puppy sitting and would usually only read when I went to bed preferring to binge watch. Not this week I have only had the TV on twice for a total of 2 hours. I have sat and reads 3 books plus the additional snippets Linzi provided and I’m not finished yet. I am now about to start the next book, Linzi’s writing makes you feel like you are actually part of the story as your mind can actually visualise each scene as if you are actually there. I thoroughly recommend you read these wonderful contributions to literature.
