A really good literary gem in contemporary sinhala fiction. I was skeptical about reading it,since the author was not familiar and the fact this was his debut Novel.

The book surpassed all my expectations and made me a fan overnight. Never have I seen brutality, violence against humanity and poverty being described in such restraint. Sometimes it's just a situation being related by a witness to the crime, and yet you feel to your core the savageness of it.

The narrative style is unique, where the author uses present and flashbacks within flashbacks to move the story forward.

Karunapala, the protagonist is the symbol of Justice, Humanity and Conscience. I have seen traces of him in every single human interest story published in daily newspapers.
Manike is the best character that begins with the darkest shade of black and ends in such a peaceful gray hue.

Compared with the Sinhala books that recently won numerous awards at festivals, this stands heads and shoulders above it all. Highly recommend to everyone who enjoys a well written book.

It's quite an extra ordinary feat to achieve a masterpiece as the debut novel. The author has succeeded in presenting the story in a different structure with the ingenious use of flashbacks (and flashbacks inside flashbacks) without making it too complicated for the reader.

A must read for anyone interested in contemporary Sinhala literature.

To me it was not good as it was praised by critics. Noticed several unrealistic characters and incidents, it doesn't appear to be magic realism too.
