Gloria H. Johnson has done everything that she was ordered to do by her parents since childhood. For her professor parents, nothing else mattered except her future academic career. As a result of their dogmatic thinking, Glory is unsure how to navigate the real world of friendships, or even how to present herself physically in the best possible light.

Enter the Zulus.

Zeta Upsilon Lambda Upsilon seems like the ideal sorority for Glory to get her heart’s desire, friendship, fashion, and maybe even fun. She’d learn how to present herself with poise and grace. She’d have instant friends as well as people to help her dress herself.

When disaster strikes during her pledge week, Gloria is offered a unique opportunity. Help a star football player with his class work and get assistance to become the optimal candidate for the next pledging season.

It seemed like a no brainer for the resident genius to coach him up a couple grade levels.

Except Tala Brown’s study skills?

Non-existent.

His grades?

Not the best.

But he was a hard worker and an innovative thinker, and she could work with that.

However, falling for Tala wasn’t part of the plan at all. Neither was the fact that he seemed to like her back. Could she come through this mess with her heart, sanity, and dream wardrobe intact?

4.5 starts rounded up

This was a five star, kicking my feet, tee-heeing over how much I loved the chemistry and story, up until the last 15% when a grenade got metaphorically tossed in and everything went to shit. 🥲

Loved both characters on their own plus how they brought out the best in the other. Loved La'ei, the friend group and found family elements were awesome. Tala's big family and community loving mindset contrasted with Glory's cold and detached family. Glory losing her temper and Tala loving it. Tala being obsessed with Gloria's body and adoring her every curve. Academics made hot and appealing. Audiobooks getting the praise they deserve. Greek mythology sprinkled in. Minimal sports. Simp and so smitten MMC. Loved the writing too.

I absolutely fell in love with both of the main characters! Glory for her innocence and sass Tala for his big heart under that tough mainly exterior! They were so different from what we're used to seeing in sports romances, and the female lead was incredibly well-written. I need more of these two. I need more of this college. I need more of these teammates. This has easily become one of my favorite sports romance books.

I stumbled upon this author completely by chance through a TikTok post, and I’m so glad I did. Our female main character is fiercely focused on her education. Her family, while extremely wealthy and intelligent, are emotionally void and borderline inhuman with how unkept they are due to the focus on education. She’s had to navigate life on her own emotionally, and watching her grow was both heartbreaking and inspiring. I wanted so badly to reach through the pages and help her through every one of her trials.

The male main character is Samoan, with a big, loving family that knows how to show affection and support. But despite that, he's not in the right headspace for a relationship, his main focus is getting through school so he can be drafted into the NFL. That’s where Glory becomes his tutor, and their story unfolds from there.

I truly can't express enough how much I adored this female lead. She’s one of the most unique and compelling characters! 5/5 spice is there but not the main focus

This is my first time reading one of Lisette's books and boy did I hop in at the right time.

Gloria "Glory" H. Johnson, is an academic darling who started her first year of college as a sophomore. With options to go to any school she opts to attend Silver Leaf University to get from under the thumb of her academically motivated parents.

This decision leads to a lot of firsts in her life for the good and the bad. She has to contend with the path her parents want and what she wants which leads to internal struggles but with the help of her friends she pivots to what will make her happy.

Tusitala "Tala" Brown is at first glance an althete with one goal, to make it to the NFL and to do so he has to maintain a GPA with the expectation or no more and no less than what was set.

The duo finds out they have a need that has to be filled. Glory wants to join a sorority and Tala needs a tutor. A deal is struck and throughout the time spent together lines are crossed and feelings are hurt.

While reading this I easily could relate to Glory and some of her struggles but at the same time relate to Tala. Despite the trauma, Glory is a force when it comes to protecting herself and loyal to her friends. Tala has an immense love for his family, love being an athlete and is a cinnamon roll by nature and holds himself accountable in everything.I found myself cheering them on with every achievement and watching them peel the layer from each other to acknowledge and work through their trauma and issues.

Lisette wrote the hell out of the supporting characters, all who deserve their own story. Shout-out for Moira for standing ten toes down and Lala for keeping Tala honest as his big sister. As a whole each character has a depth and maturity in some areas that is very real in and it doesn't feel unnecessary or off.

The only hang up was the end wasn't enough for me and I hope we circle back to these two soon.

Glory/ Gloria wants to join a sorority . She has been on an academic path since her childhood , thus is in need of some guidance in presenting herself both physically and mentally to her peers plus help in navigating the very real world of friendships…totally terrifying and why only the Zulus( Zeta , Upsilon, lambda, Upsilon ) will do as her house…. Tusitalia/ Tala Brown needs to maintain his GPA to stay in the chance to make the NFL. A disaster strikes during pledge week, Gloria is offered a very unique opportunity…an in….. All she has to do is help a star Football Player with his class work and score a try ( couldn’t resist) at becoming the optimal candidate for the next pledging season with his backing. Tala’s study skills left a lot to be desired …but she’d trained worse and is confident his grades will soar. But his ability to turn her to jelly? That’s all him…. A great story of college life , the good and the not so good strife with a lot of friendships to be made too. A beautifully crafted book by Lisette Blythe that is a remarkable piece of writing , it has all the qualities an outstanding book should. It’s immersive, it’s tense , it’s angst and it’s superb, every syllable, pronoun and verb. The life is sprung from the pages by the author’s excellent storytelling prowess . I’m leaving my review voluntarily in my own words.

I liked it. Reread value:10/10 I assumed because it starts off YA, it’d be all fluff but it has layers.🥴 There’s a little spice🌶️. I love a good romance & that’s what this gives, Glory & Tala have a few ups & down, every time Glory was mad at him I was like “NOOOOO”, but they have a happy ending regardless of the oppositions he may face.(Is that a spoiler??🤷🏽‍♀️) It was refreshing how everytime he hurt her, HE IMMEDIATELY tried to fix it instead of drawing it out, he would hear her out & then explain himself. Him so lovable.🥹 But it’s sorta like a romcom. Also I loved the representations of blackness; but ofc the author is black so she right by us, also the touches of realism; box braids & him wanting to see her real hair, her obsession w/ his hair, him liking big girls(big girls are beautiful), but we don’t get enough BBW as mfc like we should. It’s like a coming of age for Glory.

Did I cry? Yes I did. This is a story about finding yourself in a world when your home is not a place of comfort. Seeing the lives intertwined made me think back to when I was in college founding out who I was and wanted to be. Lisette's writing makes you feel as if you are in the characters shoes and I appreciate it so much. I do not want to spoil anything but I will say that this book is worth a read and I cannot wait for the other follow up books to come out. Please give this book a read you will not be disappointed. I want to point out as well character growth is greatly appreciated in the story as well.

Makes you love yourself

I don't have enough words to explain how beautiful this love story is. First, be careful of how words/advice or whatever family tells you shape your view of yourself. Next, I wish I had a Tala. He is so sweet. I love him for Gloria. And Gloria, I love who she is from the start and who she becomes throughout the story. Working on her appearance just adds a little more shine to her but she is lovely no matter what. And baby does this book give us fat girls a love for ourselves. There is someone for us. We don't need to fit a mold society made. I'm so looking forward to the next book in this series.

4.5 ⭐️

I loved everything about this book, except the end. I don’t normally read YA, it can be creepy ready about 18 year olds having sex (I actually skipped over those parts). This book was great and played true to life. The ending though. It was like running into a brink wall the way it stopped. I think an epilogue may have eased the let down. I still plan on reading the other books, so it wasn’t that bad.

Lisette has given us another incredibly sweet story.
This time we get the tale of Glory and we get to watch her learn that despite what her parents have told her, she is and has more to offer than just her intelligence. She makes new friends and finds love in a round about away. Watching Glory grow into her own person and become her own person was a very enjoyable experience.

Good read

This was a good read. The ending was okay, I did wish there was an epilogue, though. I know there are more books in the series, so maybe I'll get to see more of the main characters.

Perfect

I’m glad I decided to give this a try. Absolutely beautiful. I especially liked Glory’s friends. It should be interesting to read about them in future books. Waiting to see what happens next!
