Shadow and Light: Walking with Depression

Rate this book
Shadow and Light provides a deeply personal, first-hand view of depression, skilfully depicted through clever analogies and references to pop culture. The narrative sheds light on the ripple effects reverberating through the author's closest relationships, offering perspectives into coming to terms with the twofold emotional toll – not only during the darkest periods but also when recovering. The book furnishes fresh and enlightening perspectives on the mental landscape of a man reconciling with his depression, its impact on his nearest and dearest, and offers valuable insights for not only those who are struggling, but also for those who are endeavouring to support them.

I loved this book! I have read many about depression and this one stands out. It feels fresh and accessible - short chapters with lots of interesting writing styles and perspectives. It's real - the author knows depression and describes it with pin point accuracy. And it's honest, funny, and tender. It offers much for people struggling with depression and anxiety and also for their loved ones trying to understand how they can respond in the face of the many barriers it throws up. It's particularly effective because it doesn't present as a preachy self-help book - 'I have recovered and have all the answers'. The book rambles through depression and the author's life as if they are two intertwined pathways with all the pitfalls, learnings and delights that emerge through the author's embrace of depression and all it can teach him. Thank you for your bravery and generosity in sharing your story with us.
