romance between a cruel vampire princess and a cold hunter who come face to face after a prophecy foretells the princess's death by the hunter's hands.
Vesper
My entire life had been decided by a prophecy.
Born into a family proficient in killing every type of supernatural being on the planet, there was only one path for me.
But when it finally came to fulfill the prophecy, I found myself face to face with the most cruel yet breathtaking creature I had ever come to know.
The same one I was supposed to kill.
Yet how is it when every time I try, she's always one step ahead of me?
Aurelia
My father had turned me into a monster.
A cruel, unbreaking force that laughed in the face of all those who stood to face me.
And then he went and soldme to a bastard Prince who wanted to see nothing more than my own downfall. All while trying everything my later mother worked so hard to build.
And then she came.
She would have been a beautiful break in the constant downpour that had been my life... if she hadn't gone and ruined it all by putting her nose where it didn't belong.
But I would pay it back in full, and maybe even have some fun while I was at it.
Note: all TW will be on the author's website. This is NOT a continuation of Contract Bound but is set in the same world far in the future after the downfall of The Order and the regaining of power of vampire royalty.
Ugh, I'm so frustrated! This was shaping up to be a solid 4-star read for me—Vesper and Aurelia’s slow-burn romance had me totally hooked. I was all in... until I went to start the next book in the series.
The first one ends on a major cliffhanger, which had me excited to dive straight into the sequel—only to find out their relationship turns into a throuple with one of the side characters. And here’s the kicker: there was zero indication of this shift in the blurb or tags. Nothing about f/f/f or polyamory, because that dynamic isn’t even present in the first book!
I feel completely blindsided. I typically avoid polyamorous romances—not because there’s anything wrong with them, they’re just not what I personally enjoy reading. I go in expecting a monogamous couple, get invested in their dynamic, and then suddenly the whole direction changes without warning? It felt like such a bait-and-switch.
I might come back and revise this with a cooler head and more thoughtful points, but right now I’m just pissed becasue I'm not reading the second book in the series so I'm just left with the cliffhanger. I wish authors would be more upfront about major relationship developments like this—it’s not fair to readers who get invested in characters and their relationship only to have it unrecognisable in the next installment.
Slooooooow burn geezuz! The villains were so atrocious and vile! I love it! The tension and spice??? *sign of the cross*. General consensus: brilliant. The characters were hateable and loveable, the pace was on point.
DNF’d at 48%. I really wish I could’ve gotten into this but I just don’t think it was for me. I’m not going to bash the author or the book because I’m sure this is a good read for someone else but I just wasn’t enjoying it.
Thank you to Good Girls PR for the ARC opportunity, sorry I let ya down with this one!
📖 Eternal Captive by Elle Mae Star Rating: 5/5 ★★★★★ Spice Rating: 3/5 🌶️🌶️🌶️ Spice Frequency: 3/5 🔥🔥🔥 POV: 1st/Dual Couple: Vesper x Aurelia Available on KU ✅
• sapphic romance • bodyguard romance • vampires & witches • f0rced proximity • “I should hate you but I don’t…” • enemies to lovers • “You’re mine.” • cliffhanger ending 👀
ELLE MAE HOLY F— I am SHOOK. This book was FIRE. I’m talking TRUE enemies to lovers with spice AND plot. This is my first Elle Mae book and I feel like I just had an awakening like where the h3ll have these books been all my life? I will be reading everything Elle Mae/Eden Emory EVER writes because truly? I believe she is a mastermind. I believe her writing talent is SEVERELY underrated and I am beyond excited to keep reading these books. Let’s chat Eternal Captive.
⚠️ POTENTIAL SPOILERS ⚠️
Starting out with characters…Vesper (human) is a trained vampire ass@sin and she is sent into the world of Aurelia Castle (Vampire Royal) to end Aurelia’s life due to a prophecy she is meant to fulfill. Needless to say, I was obsessed with this dynamic from the get go. Vesper was giving all the “I know I should unalive you but I can’t” vibes and I ATE. IT. UP. Like you mean to tell me that this sassy and stubborn and intelligent vampire totally threw off everything you’ve been training for your whole life? Wild but also I get it. 🤷♀️ Was Vesper as talented as I thought she would be after being trained for like…her entire life? Nah. I did find her ass@ssin skills a bit underwhelming. HOWEVER, she was facing a super strong vampire and was trying to play mind games more than she was trying to show brute force so I loved that aspect. She was strong MENTALLY and she did step in and save Aurelia from others on numerous occasions so Vespy, you’re a winner in my heart mmmkay?
Now let’s chat Aurelia. COMPLEX CHARACTER ALERT 🚨 legit in the best possible way, Aurelia was an extremely deep character and I loved her strength, her sass, her internal monologue and more. I truly connected with this character and her whole story made me feel invested from the first moment I met her. She went through the Wringer and still chose to love through it all. Chose to TRUST. I just ADORE her. I will lowkey 💀 for her…not really but can you at least feel my love for her now? 🤣
Plot was GIVING. It was perfectly paced in my opinion and I was not bored. I was not ever like drowning in world building or explanations. It was perfectly crafted. The spice was SPICING and I was out here fanning myself off like DAYUM. What does a girl have to do to be in either one of the FMCs shoes? I loved the spice and the plot and they were intricately woven and never felt out of place to me.
Overall, such an incredible book. I am MAD at that ending only because I am SO invested and need to know what happens next!! Elle, please gimme book 2 with haste. In the meantime…I’ll be reading your entire backlist 🤣
I wish I could give this a higher rating because I normally love Elle Mae/Eden Emory books, but this book was kinda clunky. There were a couple parts that I had to reread because I couldn't decipher exactly what was happening or where it was taking place, I don't normally have this issue while reading her books. Also, the relationship between Vesper and Aurelia lacked believable connection. It's definitely worth the read, it's just not her best work.
I had high hopes for Eternal Captive, after being a big fan of Contract Bound. I was very disappointed, but perhaps you won't be. The banter was great. The spicy scenes were fine, but felt like they were there just to be there. The plot felt like it was happening to the characters. The ending was incomprehensible. I know it's meant to be the first book of a duology, so maybe it will make sense after book 2, but I left this book feeling pretty bad.
The best part of this was the smut and it wasn't even that good. So much nothing happens. The author doesn't tell you what the main character's tattoo looks like for literally 70% of the book despite it being plot relevant. There's zero build up to any plot reveal.
4⭐️ - a “consultant” (a.k.a. Hunter) in turmoil over hating but desiring a vampire princess. Great setup, interesting plot (so far), and untapped potential when coupled with the introduction of witches and prophecies. All of those elements I loved and of course the writing well done, so if you like a good vampire book, you should read it.
Fair warning though that there are a LOT of plot gaps, loose ends that never get tied together and a cliffhanger“ending” that will make you groan!! I’m hooding out hope that book 2 will pull it all together!
Primer libro que leo de este estilo, y fue por curiosidad. No tenía muchas expectativas, y no me sorprendió.
La trama es sencilla:
Vesper, cazadora de vampiros entrenada desde niña por un padre abusivo, destinada a cumplir una profecía en la que acaba con la familia vampira "más importante".
Aurelia, princesa vampira perteneciente a dicha familia.
...
Me gustó.
first and foremost, thank you so much to good girls pr for the arc of this book!
i haven't read many sapphic books and the ones i did read were always written so terribly, but THIS ONE??????? OH MY FUCKING GOD. magic. vampires. death. hunters. war. sex parties. this book had EVERYTHING i was looking for, all wrapped up into one story and i devoured it. omg it was so good.
i am so obsessed with vesper it's not even funny. not only is she handy with a knife, but she's just handy. (pun intended) she was so strong but also weak with it came to the princess and their dynamic was so fun to read!
aurelia. i still can't pronounce her name properly and that's just my stupid ass self. but!!!!! this princess was a badass. it might have taken her a minute and the help of vesper to get there, but she got there and i love that for her.
i still have so many questions, though and i would very much like them answered please 😤 and THAT ENDING????????? HOW DARE YOU. HOW. DARE. YOU. KSDJFNGEIUJDTNH;SGBD I WAS SO MAD. but i loved this book so much and i'll be re-reading it right before book 2 comes out!
•vampire/vampire hunter •enemies to lovers •forced proximity •princess/bodyguard •sapphic
“Seeing her covered in the blood of that asshole was probably the most beautiful sight I had ever seen in my life.”
i need book 2 immediately because the cliffhanger?!!! the sexual tension was hot as hell, the banter ?! i devoured this book. i really loved Vesper and Aurelia, i can not wait for more of them. they were sexy together
Aurelia is our Princess vampire! she’s sassy, confident and a badass.
Vesper is our vampire hunter, sent to the palace to kill Aurelia but actually ends up falling in love with her. she’s so strong but has such a soft heart for Aurelia! i loved her.
fav quotes🩸🗡️
“I would give my life for yours, princess. Shouldn’t you know that by now?”
“She is too beautiful for this world.”
“You did look quite breathtaking covered in his blood, though. I’d pay good money to see it again.”
“Tell me how much you missed me, and I’ll reward you, princess.”
My first ever sapphic PNR and what a ride it was. The enemies to lovers tension and angst. The constant twists and turns keeping you on the edge. The scorching hot slow burn chemistry with the thrill of forbidden. Elle Mae has brought everyone together beautifully but you will be left wanting more.
Vesper belongs to a vampire hunter family and since childhood, she has been brutally trained for only one job. To kill the vampire princess Aurelia and fulfill the prophecy predicting fall of the vampires. She gets into the group of guards aka feeders for Prince Icas who is getting engaged to Aurelia. It should have been a perfect opportunity. But she gets to know that Aurelia isn't just a cruel rich spoiled princess. She is trapped. Will Vesper help her? This book ends with a cliffhanger.
Aurelia has a complicated situation. Her mother was the most popular and powerful queen in whole Vampire world and she is respected and trusted by the vampires even now. But her father aka the king is really cruel and abusive and has extinguished almost all of her fire. She is playing a survival game everyday and this marriage will be practically a death warrant. The author has brilliantly portrayed the duality of her helplessness and her fierceness. Vesper started as a hater but as she came closer to her as a strategy, she realises that Aurelia isn't ruthless or corrupt like the other royals. She doesn't enjoy torturing humans for entertainment. It was a struggle for Vesper. The kill was a contract and the princess evoked a strong protectiveness and possessiveness in her that is inconvenient. They cannot really be together as their worlds are enemies but they have slowly fallen in love. So many moving pieces. So many almost losses. But there is no denying the spark and the connection between them. Aurelia and Vesper love to tease and fire up each other that ended up being spicy foreplay. They are both stubborn and fiery and dangerous and it's always a battle of will but ends with a truce of sex. Vesper may have thwarted the immediate danger but in the process, she toppled a lot of dominos and there will be consequence. And Vesper may have to make a heartbreaking choice. Their saga continues in the next book...
Eternal Captive had me CAPTIVATED, captive in a chokehold!
I ate up this book, no crumbs. Eternal Captive is a sapphic vampire romance full of political intrigue, enemies to lovers, vampire hunter x vampire, royalty, blood bonding/sharing, and some scenes that keep it all extra spicy!
I’m in love with Aurelia and Vesper. While they both come from different financial and socioeconomic backgrounds, they are so very similar. They both yearn for control and are fueled by vengeful female rage. I’m obsessed with the power dynamic in their developing relationship. I’ll be thinking about them until the next book is published!
I really appreciated the guide to the hierarchy at the beginning of the book. I thought it provided a nice context and a more unbiased assessment of what I was getting into. The story is told through a dual perspective between Vesper and Aurelia. The pacing and mix of relationship building to action to world building and all of the above was immaculate.
There is so much potential in this world and these characters, I’m very excited to see where Elle Mae will take it. There are some loose ends and open storylines to fill and keep an eye out for later in the series!
Thank you Good Girls PR for allowing me a copy in exchange for an honest review, all opinions are my own.
I received an ARC of this from he author and Goog girls PR company. This review however is entirely voluntary and of my own free will! Spoiler-free review: 4.75* Elle once again had me in a chokehold with this book and these characters. The characters were three dimensional and had a personality outside of each-other.
Aurelia I want to wrap in a nice warm blanket and protect her from everything bad in the world and what happens to her, granted she could probably unalive me very easily.
Vesper was gritty and moody but also full of trauma and I also want to wrap her in a nice fluffy blanket.
The story kept me hooked from the get go and I truly couldn’t put it down. That being said THE ENDINGGGGGGGG
Would recommend as long as 18+ and you check the triggers first!
Wow! I really enjoyed Vesper and Aurelia's story (so far can't wait to see where it goes next). I think the concept of Vampire Families (mafia style basically) has always been interesting to me and I think it's really well set up here. I'm intrigued to know more about it once we get deeper into the series. The tension between Aurelia and Vesper is palpable throughout the book and I thoroughly ;) enjoyed the sex scenes between them. They were blood well written. I'm really looking forward to see how Cedar's role will be expanded in the next book and more about the side of the world that Vesper comes from.
the couple dynamic was something so yummy and delicious and well done🫡… the plot however….👎👎👎… why do we have to keep reiterating the entire plot each chapter move along… i’ve been reading with you i am fully aware of what the plot points are😀
i did find some aspects a little confusing and i think the descriptions could have been a bit better, but overall i was very invested in this. short chapters, entertaining, will definitely be reading the sequel because that ending got me fucked up
DNF at 20ish% Hmmmm ones a vampire, ones a vampire hunter. Ok simple trope but could be good. Unfortunately neither character is likeable or even remotely relateable, and the writing isn't good or bad, it's just boring. I also hate the word "addicting" - like just tell me you're stupid.
