From New York Times bestselling author Joanne DeMaio comes a riveting novel about two brothers, one crime and the unexpected love story that rises from it.
Amy Trewist thinks she'll never recover her quiet life at her beloved farmhouse on a New England road. Not after her two-year-old daughter Grace is kidnapped in an elaborate crime. On one clear morning, in mere minutes, Grace is gone and Amy's world spins into a heartbreaking new place.
George Carbone often spends easy time with his brother. Whether at a ballgame or taking a day trip, it's how they connect. Until one sunny day when the trip is to a bank parking lot and George is drawn into a crime he never sees coming. And into a stricken mother's life he cannot ignore.
In a summer that simmers with the unsolved crime, George is haunted by a bankroll hidden behind kitchen tiles, by a brother who dragged him into this, and by a father who instilled in him a conscience. A conscience challenged when a young child and beautiful woman crossed paths with him and unexpectedly took hold of his heart.
Set among the red barns, lush cornfields and sparkling wishing fountain of Addison, Connecticut, True Blend is a compelling novel that steals your heart and does not let go.
Joanne DeMaio is the prolific New York Times bestselling author of The Seaside Saga and other novels. She lives with her family in Connecticut and is currently at work on upcoming books.
Joanne DeMaio, is at the top of her game with “TRUE BLEND”! Having read all her books (which I highly recommend, as enjoyed them all), “True Blend”, is much more than a sweet romance, feel-good book in an idyllic setting, to curl up with.
True Blend is indeed an unexpected love story set in a fictional town of Addison, Connecticut (great front cover) to draw you in; However, more importantly a suspenseful, thrilling, compelling page-turner, keeping you on the edge of your seat, full of emotions, choices, and intensity, as DeMaio, so brilliantly creates the background of her characters, the setup, interjects raw emotions, feelings, and careful plot planning of this thought provoking novel. Making you read well into the night, to see what is coming next.
There is so much to this book, from the dynamic sensitive relationship with George/Nate/Father. You feel as though you know the characters and are stepping into the pages of their hearts and lives.
The references to a card game (Nate/George) as it parallels to their life. Nate’s risk taking, raising the stakes, house of cards, playing a hand, showing your hand, keeping the cards close to the belt; guilt, and a disastrous and meditated plan he has developed for his brother George, allowing nothing to stand in his way.
George, a man who sacrificed his dreams of professional baseball for his family, who kept his father’s butcher shop (The Main Course) running, the business man, the stable one-who lives alone and never married. He plays it safe until he is thrown into an uncontrollable circumstance of choosing between his brother and the safety of a beautiful young woman and her daughter, with only seconds to decide.
The one point, Nate had not planned on when concocting this heist, was George falling in love with the victims they hold hostage - Amy and her daughter Grace. As fate would have it, Amy, a recent widow leading a quiet life in her beautiful farmhouse, with her almost three year old daughter Grace, owner of a vintage bridal shop happens to be at the bank (wrong place and wrong time), which will forever chance her life.
George also happens to be in the car with Nate on his way to the casino when he was thrown into a scene, which would change the course of his life, with only seconds to decide which path to choose and the consequences. When these two worlds collide, what course will it take and is there ever a perfect crime?
Amy’s quite peaceful life turns into a daily nightmare with threats, stalking, flashbacks, anxiety, fear and PTSD for this young mother and her daughter, who cannot speak after the kidnapping. Will her life ever be the same? Can she remember each detail of the man who took her daughter? One second changed her life, her daughter, as well as George’s future.
True Blend would be ideal for book clubs and book discussions. The relationship between Nate/George/Father is very complex. The what ifs of the day of the heist, what could George have done differently, could he have stopped the hostage and robbery, would it have changed the outcome, and if so how, could he have told Amy earlier on, and Amy’s past relationship with her daughter and the loss of her husband Mark, Amy’s relationship with her parents, and her best friend Celia.
For those fans of Whole Latte Life, you will enjoy the mentions of quaint coffee house. A beautiful summer of two people joined together by tragedy, nature and force. Can their love survive, as they learn to trust one another where secrets are unveiled in this small town New England setting, for a true blending of souls and lives? I highly recommend!
True Blend by Joanne DeMaio Without even knowing what this book was about when I was approached to read/review/blog tour I jumped at the chance. I have loved the author's other works and knew this would be a good one also. I was not disappointed. Starts out with Amy who is a widow of just one year and she has a 2 yo daughter, Grace. They lead a routine schedule but one morning Grace is taken by armed robbers who also take an armored truck. She obeys their final words and not contact the police for over an hour. She is returned and Amy finds it hard even with her mother there to trust people again. She works at the bridal gown shop out of her house. The story also follows George Carbone and him being the hero for returning Amy to her mother. Problem is he has issues of his own and never wanted to be part of the armed robbery, never mind taking a child away from her mother. He's also finding it hard to not only trust people but carry on under the guise of being a hero when in his mind, he is not. Love the locale, hearing of the bridal gown accessories/design work and learning about other career choices described. Therapy helps Amy and what to expect from her flashbacks and Amy's that might help the police... What amazes me is we as kids growing up also put cards held with clothespins on our bike spokes. Learned new things: gun therapy and process of the whole thing, meat market and all it entails from the food, inventory to cleaning and operating of the tools needed to do the trade.
Love how the whole story comes together with pieces from the past days and months that all fit in. Such detailed descriptions of the dates and day trips, priceless! I received this book from the author in exchange for my honest review.

Dollycas’s Thoughts
Again I think the synopsis provided to me and posted online gives away too much of the story. I like to discover the characters and their connections as I read the story.
Joanne DeMaio really surprised me with this story. It starts out with a lot of suspense and then delves into the lives of the two main characters. Their lives were turned upside down in less than a minute and for both George and Amy this is the second time their lives have taken a drastic turn. Amy is still grieving her husband’s death and George is running a butcher shop instead of playing baseball. George could not be more different from his brother Nate. George is the responsible, steadfast brother and Nate has his head in the clouds. George took over the family business when his father died and is an upstanding member of the community. His brother is always looking for the way to make easy money and change his and George’s lives so they don’t have to work and would be able to follow their dreams. He thinks he finally has a fool proof plan and he drags George right into his scheme never thinking of the consequences. Now George is trying to figure out how to right this massive wrong and Amy is suffering from flashbacks and PTSD.
DeMaio always creates fascinating characters and this time she really puts them in an extraordinary situation, then she adds twists that were so unexpected. I love mysteries and this story read just like a mystery, when secrets were revealed I was stunned.
Like DeMaio’s Blue Jeans and Coffee Beans this story took me on an emotional roller coaster. I really didn’t know how this story would end and I didn’t have a clear feeling on how I wanted it to end. She truly did blend together an outstanding story. This like all the rest of her books is a must read!!
True Blend by Joanne DeMaio was a big departure from her previous books. I have read all of her past books and this one makes me definitely want to read all of her future ones. Again human relationships were explored and there were heartbreaking times but this one added suspense and crime. A big part of the book involved the conscience of a man and the PTSD of a woman.
Amy Trewist is a young widow living in Addison, Connecticut with her two year old daughter, Grace. She is still dealing with her husband’s death when her daughter is snatched away by bank robbers to be held as a hostage. She can only remember snatches of what happened like the man’s hand as they were both clutching the toddler’s pink saddle shoe. She remembers her daughter going limp as she is carried away. How can she deal with this? Her friends and mother try to help but all she can think of is getting her daughter back. She replays the scene of her daughter being taken over and over again.
George Carboni has always been different from his brother, Nate. His brother never thinks of the consequences of anything that he does. George has always been true blue having been instilled with a strong conscience by his father. He spends time with his brother often, going fishing, going to games and eating out. But his brother does not change. When Nate drags him into something that tears his heart and mind apart. Now he wishes that he and his brother had gone separate ways a long time ago. How is he going to right this horrible wrong. How can he do anything without telling the secret that has tortured him for so long?
I didn’t think it was possible but I enjoyed this book even more than her past books. The psychological drama and suspense keep you reading. You cannot help but be engaged in the torment of these two main characters.
Please read this book! You will not be disappointed!
I received the ARC of this book from the publicist that in no way influenced my thoughts or feelings for this story.
I have read several books By Joanne DeMaio and each time I read one I say it is the best book I have read by her. Well this one makes me feel the same way.
She holds your interest from the very beginning. Every time I get a chance to read I pick it up and then get upset when I have to put it down to go to work or do something else.
Amy has lost her husband over a year ago and she has a 2 year old daughter named Gracie. She is just starting to get over the loss of her husband and get on with her life. She stops at the bank one morning and all that changes for her.
She starts to withdraw again and then starts having flashbacks. She meets a handsome young man named George and he is so nice to her and Gracie. But George has some issues of his own to deal with. Will they be able to work through her issues and his to have their happily ever after.
Read the story to see, it is not your typical boy meets girl and they fall in love romance but I really think you will be surprised and pleased with this book. I know I was.
Usually Joanne DeMaio's books are refreshing and realistic. Although the story plot was good and believable (up to a point) I was disappointed in the ending. I thought throughout the story how can this end happily for the characters. They were between a rock and a hard place with no plausible way out without hurting each other. I didn't find the end believable and was disappointed in the choices made, not so for George. He was a stand up guy and admitted his position in the robbery and kidnapping. Not one of my favorites but I will continue to read her other stories.
True Blend starts off very intensely, with a robbery accompanied by kidnapping a child and a mother following through with the kidnappers demands of not contacting police for one hour. Intense, right…I know (I could not read fast enough)!!! As a mother (or any reader for that matter), you are immediately putting yourself in the shoes of Amy, the main character, you feel the loss, fear and stress of being put in that impossible position. Each second feels like an hour, the waiting to see how it is going to resolve. You are granted the luxury of seeing both sides of the situation (Amy’s and the kidnappers), making it so much more interesting and maybe a bit more intense??? What follows that intense and grabbing beginning of the story is just amazing. It is about learning to heal wounds and to trust again, it is about love in various forms, it is about the bonds of a child and their mother, it is about friendship and choosing the course of one’s own life and not letting demons of the past dictate how one lives. It is different than DeMaio’s other books, in a wonderful way. It illustrates growth and change. There are still the elements of DeMaio’s that fans will enjoy, but she has added a new layer to her writing that was quite enjoyable to read. I recommend this book and rate it 4.5 stars.
This is the authors fourth book, and I have enjoyed them all. The story was so interesting that I didn’t mind that it was longer than what I prefer. The author did a great job of keeping my attention.
True Blend is a mix of loss, a mother’s love, a brother’s betrayal, a kidnapping, suspense, fear, betrayal and romance. The book is a lot like her other stories, but it’s a lot different too. The characters are similar, but the plot is totally different.
The only fault I could find with the book was that there was some pretty bad language, especially GD, which makes me cringe. Other than that, the book was fine.
As I said before, I’ve read all of DeMaio’s books, and can’t wait to read the next one.
Probably the best of all the books I've read by Joanne DeMaio. I've found her books to be a little light on substance, but not this one. An different story that kept me interested until the very end.
I read the BOOK edition. Amy, owner of Vintage Bridal shop, dagger Grace is kidnapped outside her bank. One of the supposed kidnapper robbers takes charge of Grace and watches over her ensuring her safe return. How Grace recovers from this trauma and Amy walks through flashbacks, helping her daughter, developing a new relationship with George creates a how the crime may be solved. Joanne DeMaio’s wonderfulSeaside Saga characters are woven through story. We meet Celia, Amy’s best friend, run into Eva and Maris as they are shopping for Maris’s wedding gown, George, Amy and Grace travel under the Trestle Bridge for a visit to Stony Point Beach...so great. The “Star” theme continues..so watch out for this while you are reading. Loved this story!
Amy lost her husband a year ago and she and her 2 1/2 year old daughter are recovering. One morning in Spring they are caught in a bank robbery and little Grace is taken hostage. George was not intending to be part of the group of robbers but is forced into it by his brother Nate. George is the one that returns Grace. George becomes a protector to Amy and Grace, Amy feels he is the one who saved her Grace. They both go for therapy, the police are investigating. Amy is being stalked. True Blend follows what happens to the victims of crime. When will George do the right thing and who was really behind the crime and the stalking. Joanne DeMaio places this in Addison but this is not the Sweet Addison of the Christmassy stories.
Widowed Amy and her young daughter, Grace start their day out like any other day of running errands. But this day is anything but normal. Terror, mistrust and love are a true blend of the happenings in this book by Joanne DeMaio. Another good read by this author. I received this book free for my review.
This book has an interesting premise. It begins with a bank heist and an abduction of a young child. Then through a certain set of circumstances one of the men involved in the heist becomes romantically involved with the child's mother. I thought how is this ever going to work? But the author creates two characters who are both sympathetic and the story becomes believable.
The title still falls in with the author love for coffee and friends and relationships. The beach, salt air is also a place where the story is told. I enjoyed reading it.
I picked it up, read one chapter.... Something about a child being kidnapped just had me in a heart sick way. I put it down. Returned to it after reading every other book. It definitely hit the heart strings ... 🙏🏻💐
Honestly, at first I didn’t think I would enjoy this book. The more I read, the more I couldn’t put it down! It was so good. I would definitely recommend this book!
