Dark Protectors, Book #17

Unknown to humans, beyond daylight lies a world of intoxicating darkness where deadly creatures prowl with insatiable desires and unbelievable power: vampires, demons, witches, shifters. When vulnerable humans find themselves thrust into that realm, they’ll never be the same. . .

In the aftermath of war, a fragile peace hovers between the Kurjan nation and the Dark Protector coalition. Yet amid labyrinthine politics and intrigue, Vero Phoenix, a Kurjan, stands apart. He has lived devoid of legacy or lineage—until the day he backed his newly found brother as king, putting himself into the treacherous position of enforcer and shield. Yet there is another thorn in his side, no less vexing, undeniably captivating—and all-too-human . . .

Lyrica Graves was once ensnared by Kurjan captors and now embodies defiance and freedom as she guides other women to independence and modernity. She is particularly amused—and breathtakingly fearful—by her tangles with Vero. But their clashing also belies a sizzling connection, a dark attraction between supernatural and fully human that threatens their chosen destinies and makes them a target for far too many enemies . . .

After the last installment, that saw the end of the arc around The Seven, a group of immortals, that were tasked with reinforcing the off-world imprisonment of an evil monster named Ulric, a member of an offshoot tribe of Kurjans called the Cyst. The arc ended with a bloody and gruesome war to end all wars, and with Paxton, a half Demon warrior for the Realm, rising as the new king of the Kurjans, after he learns of his half Kurjan ancestry and bloodline, and with his newfound brother, Vero, as his second in command.

This installment picks up shortly thereafter, and Paxton and Vero need to bring the Cyst back into the Kurjan nation. However, there are those Kurjans that don’t want Paxton as King and they definitely don’t want the Realm as allies. While these enemies remain hidden for most of the story, their attacks are not and they are fierce. With attacks on both Paxton and Vero’s lives, the are also killing mostly random human women (only one woman was from the camp, the others weren’t) and leaving the bodies for Paxton and Vero to find.

There is also another storyline of Lyrica, a human woman who was previously kidnapped by the Kurjans, but now that Paxton is king, Vero has assigned Lyrica to work with the captured human women, as well as the human women who have already mated Kurjan soldiers, to find out how many want to go back home and how many want to stay. With the enticement of becoming immortal, almost all choose to stay. Lyrica is also attempting to bring the Kurjan nation into the 21st century in regards to their treatment of women and their attitudes regarding their partnerships with their mates. Kurjans don’t marry, however, they do mate for life. In her professional dealings with Vero, Lyrica becomes attracted to Vero, much to her own dismay.

Most of the story revolves around getting the camp up to speed to host the Cyst council in hopes of getting them back into the Kurjan fold. If Paxton and Vero don’t succeed, the Kurjan nation will fall into civil war. Additionally, in standard immortal fashion, Vero and Lyrica have a pretty rocky “courtship”, with Vero being the typical bossy, demanding and infuriating, male, Kurjan, mate. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention: Vero “accidentally” mates Lyrica. LMAO!!!

Anyway, the end comes fast, with the storylines colliding into a flurry of death and destruction, which is actually kind of typical for the Dark Protectors. I was kind of leery of a storyline around the Kurjan nation. After 16 installments and numerous novellas of the war between the Realm and the Kurjans, I was undecided of a DP world with Kurjan allies. Honestly, I kind of still am. I don’t think everything is wine and roses in the Kurjan nation. They still have enemies and they’re not all coming from the Realm. Time will tell. However, I do want to say that I do love Zanetti’s wicked sense of humor that she instills in her stories of the trials and tribulations of mixing humans with immortals. Seriously, the whole genre of romantasy is so amusing and entertaining that I love when the author doesn’t miss a chance to exhibit the crazy and outrageous.

The continuing character development of the MC’s was well done, especially Paxton and Vero. This fast-paced, action-packed storyline was long awaited and very exciting that I finished in two late night sittings that had me chanting the “just one more chapter” song. The writing was on par for the series: a centuries old war among the immortal worlds, a love/hate chemistry between a super sexy, grumpy, centuries old immortal soldier and an independent, feisty, sassy, stubborn, human woman, as well as a violent and scary fight scene destroying the enemy with a lead-in to the next installment. I’m looking at an overall rating of 4.4 that I will be rounding down to a 4star review. I want to thank NetGalley and Kensington Publishing for sending me this eARC in exchange for my honest review.

Prince of Darkness by Rebecca Zanetti
Dark Protectors series #17. Paranormal romantic suspense. Can be read as a stand-alone but better as part of the series.
The Kurjan nation, at least part of it, has joined with the Dark Protector (vampire, demon, witches, and shifters) coalition. They need to get the Cyst to join as well to prevent future wars. Vero Phoenix, a Kurjan, is in charge of setting up the new compound. He must help transition the Kurjan soldiers to a new way of life, integrating with humans, vampires and demons. He doesn’t have the patience needed for diplomacy but he’ll have to figure it out.
Lyrica Graves is an enhanced female in charge of helping the Kurjans transition to their new lives. She’s also helping other enhanced woman that were kidnapped, recover and figure out their futures.
Lyrica works for and with Vero but she finds his thinking outdated and overbearing. She can’t stop poking him. Their chemistry is sizzling. And soon enough, Vero is going to show Lyrica exactly what he’s been trained to do.

It’s the start of a new world with the Kurjans joining the coalition. It’s a lot of work and negotiations. Both for the nations and individuals. Lyrica is driving Vero crazy with demands and accommodations for her women. With one found frozen to death, naked and bitten, security is ramped up to find who doesn’t respect the new alignment. Vero will do whatever it takes to keep Lyrica safe.

When we first met Vero, he was young and just learning the way of Kurjans. He preferred science and the labs but became a fighting leader. The Kurjans were the enemy. Now Vero protects the King, a half brother.
Vero and Lyrica are like tar and water. Repelling and just a little absorbing. They grow closer as they work together and finally admit to their attraction. It’s a little adversarial, but that just makes the fall into passion all the better.
Lots of arguments that turn to banter and ultimately into hot foreplay and sizzling encounters.
It’s a new world. Who knows where it will go next.

Dynamic, steamy and unpredictable. Except for the romance. That’s a sure bet. Exactly how we want it.

I received a copy of this from NetGalley. I also purchased all formats of this to keep.

Okay. How did I not know how hot Vero is??? I remember him being mentioned in previous books, obviously. But holy moly, I was not prepared for all that smoking hot dominance! Vero is every reason you need to read this book!

Vero, Kurjan prince and second-in-command, is trying to help his newfound brother, King Paxton Phoenix, forge an alliance between the Kurjans and other immortals, while keeping Pax’s head on his shoulders. He and Paxton have a lot to accomplish: avoiding assassination attempts, bringing the Cyst back into the fold, and literally rebuilding their broken nation. While Vero feels the heavy weight of responsibility, he can’t help the way his attention always slips towards a certain stunning and bossy female whenever she is near.

Lyrica is an empath, an enhanced human female kidnapped by the previous Kurjan regime, who has embraced her new job with gusto. She is in charge of the reorientation and relocation of Kurjan kidnapees, but as some of the women have chosen to remain with them in exchange for a chance at immortality, Lyrica is determined to drag the Kurjan nation into modern times.

The Dark Protectors Books 1-7 introduced readers to the Realm, with its vampires, witches, and shifters. Dark Protectors Books 8-16 shifted to The Seven and brought us the demon-vampire hybrid point of view. Prince of Darkness (Book 17) is the first to bring a primarily Kurjan perspective. It’s like lifting a curtain on a different culture and finally glimpsing its mysteries. I loved it like a nerd devouring a wiki!

Vero and Lyrica are an adorable, opposites-attract couple. He’s over a foot taller than her, built for battle but would rather be in the lab, and rather laconic as he goes about his duties. She’s energetic, vocal, and idealistic about her transparent mission to liberate their gender norms. But, she’s black coffee and he’s bubbly water! Trust me, these characters are superb.

Prince of Darkness brings the physicality and romance one expects from a Rebecca Zanetti novel, wrapped around a mystery that exemplifies her proficiency with suspense. The Kurjans have been the Enemy for so long. Who will emerge as the next big bad? This is a promising start to a fresh DP story arc. I can’t wait to see what the next generation of Dark Protectors will bring to this exciting new world!

The TSTL that a lot of this author's heroines exhibit get right on my pip, and Lyrica is at the top of the list. Thankfully her heros are fantastic and do compensate. But still, Lyrica was annoying!

Wow! What a perfect introduction to this new chapter in the Dark Protectors series!

I absolutely loved Lyrica. Her fierce determination not just to protect, but to actively support the human women who were once captives, helping guide them toward the futures they choose for themselves. She’s my kind of heroine. There’s a small side story that highlights her efforts, and I really enjoyed that element. It intrigued me and I would’ve loved more of it.

Vero is the very definition of a Dark Protector. This line says it all:

“His searing blue gaze raked her, dark with raw, dangerous intensity. ‘Because if anyone took you from me, I’d burn the world to ash to find you—and I’d tear through the wreckage with bloody hands until nothing remained.”

The storyline is tightly woven and kept me turning the pages. I found myself thinking about the plot even when I wasn’t reading, which is always a sign of a riveting book. This is truly a great entry point for new readers. The author provides just enough backstory to bring you up to speed without overwhelming you.

While I’m not usually a fan of book series, I’ll drop everything to read anything from the Dark Protectors. These books are smexy, fun, intriguing, and packed with danger and action. I can’t wait to see where this author takes us next!

Good to be back in this world

As much as I love this world, and obviously it's alot as this is book 17, I have to say that out of all of them, this has been my least favorite. I just didn't care for Vero and Lyrica and when the whole book is pretty much based on them, it just didn't work for me. I guess you can't love every single book. Regardless, I still love this world and the people that showed up in it. I just thought everything wrapped up too quickly in a neat bow. I will, of course, be reading the next one whenever it's released.

So so

It hurts me to say this but this was by far my least favorite book of the series, and really of Ms. Zanetti. I love all of her books, but this one missed the mark for me. Nothing to do with the Kurjans. It was just uninteresting, both the story and the characters. It took me 6 days to read this. Usually I run through her releases in 6-7 hours. Bummed :( Still have high hopes for future books.

Four and a half
If you have enjoyed the Dark Protectors series you will surely be delighted with this latest instalment. Its been fun over recent years reading about Demons, vampires, witches, shifters and all manner of immortal creatures but recently the Realm has found peace with just the Kurjan nation being well out of step shall we say ?
So after so much war and death it looks like finally under Paxton the new leader even the Kurjan nation might lay down their arms but with tensions still high it all depends on reuniting with their religious leaders and the Cyst have never been exactly peaceful ! Paxtons half brother Vero will do everything he can to protect his newly discovered brother but with kidnapped human females in his camp and one who particularly constantly challenges him life is far from smooth . Things escalate when a dead body is discovered and with an important meeting scheduled between the nation's it's imperative that Vero finds answers fast !
I'm undecided how I feel about this book as in many ways it does feel like the end of this series. If I think back to the beginning I find myself comparing Vero to Talen and what do you know these arrogant, demanding totally obsessed males are very similar ! Lyrica might be an empath but at times she totally does not understand Vero although to be truthful he definitely has her pretty well sussed out . I thoroughly enjoyed the suspense that is woven into this story although I missed the humour that I often associate with these books. The romance took its time and never felt rushed but I didn't like that Lyrica was lied to but my lips are sealed. Yes I very much enjoyed being back in this world but I'm unsure how it can continue without fresh enemies to face and that leaves Hunter kind of hanging ! Plus there's the mystery surrounding Vero so perhaps the author does have more ways to keep her readers happy.
This voluntary take is of a copy I requested and my thoughts are honest and I believe fair

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ | Format: eARC | 🌶️🌶️🌶️

Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Books for the ARC!

I don’t usually jump into a series at book 17, but Prince of Darkness pulled me right in. Vero is a prince trying to piece his nation back together, and Lyrica is the empath determined to push back at every turn. Their connection? Electric. The push and pull between them kept me flipping pages long after I should have been asleep.

The world-building is impressive, full of tension and dark secrets that unravel at just the right pace. A few twists were predictable, but honestly? I didn’t mind. Vero and Lyrica’s chemistry more than made up for it. If you love paranormal romance with political intrigue and fiery banter, this one’s for you.

Can Paxton and Vero keep the Kurjan nation together without losing the new-found peace with the Realm?

Not gonna lie, it was difficult to go from hating the Kurjans to giving them the benefit of the doubt. At least Vero was still the likeable character from before, conflicted with the society he grew up in and his role in it. Lyrica made the most of a situation she didn’t want to be in. She was determined and exactly what Vero needed to give him purpose and direction. Vero was slightly less intense and possessive than the other heroes in this series, and the chemistry was less in-your-face, but still impactful.

The tenuous new connection between the Realm and the Kurjans, Paxton’s leadership and the Kurjan’s reactions to it, and Vero and Hunter’s friendship were all handled in a realistic and believable way. The plot flowed fairly fast through nail-biting action sequences and tense personal moments. Coupled with some surprising twists, unexplained murders, and meeting some Kurjans up close and personal, this book expanded the world of this series in an exciting way.

I can highly recommend this entire series if you like a steamy paranormal romance. It is definitely best to read the books in order, though you could probably jump in with book number 8, Vampire’s Faith. But they are all well worth reading.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with a copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Not sure if this was meant to be a bonus for the last arc or the beginning of a new one, but for me it didn’t add anything of note to the Dark Protectors Series. You sorta kinda could pick out what was gonna happen with the MCs, but the interactions with other carryover characters was stilted and for me unfulfilling. I think it’d be cool to learn more about the Kurjan’s but without another world defining enemy idk where this series can go. IMO this should have been a novella and not a full novel.

If you haven't read any of the prior novels/novellas in the author's Dark Protector series/world, this is a great place to step in and give it a try. If you're already a fan of the series, you won't be disappointed either. This book starts a new arc for the series, with the focus shifting over to a different one of the immortal races than prior books -- the Kurjan, often the antagonist/villain to date, as the new leadership moves to take them into a new era of peace, hope and change. Of course change doesn't come easy to centuries of "tradition" and violence. While some events from prior books are mentioned, the author does a good job of giving the relevant information without bogging down the current story. The same can be said in regards to important pieces of the prior worldbuilding.

I enjoyed Vero & Lyrica's story. You could see the sparks between the two from the start. I appreciated that the relationship wasn't rushed nor was their any "games" or excess angst as they tried to figure out just where the relationship was going. There was respect between the two as they worked together and got to know/understand each other individually and each other race. Action beyond the relationship - Lyrica's desire to help the females and Vero dedication & determination to help his half brother heal and unite the Kurjan into a united nation heading into a better future (while keeping said half brother from being killed) and the various happenings threating their cause also brings a bit of mystery to the story. All work well together to keep the plot & pace moving and the pages turning. I look forward to see what & who will be next.

I have read every single word and book from the DP series and to say that I ever thought there would be a story of the Kurjans is astonishing! They were the enemies of the Realm (and unfortunately some still are) and to see in this very book that they now will have to work together for peace is great! This is Vero and Lyrica's story. Vero is Paxton's half brother, a Prince and becomes his Enforcer, as Paxton is now the King of the Kurjan nation, crazy right? Lol. It was just as amazing as all the other stories in this series. Of course we have the alpha over the top protectiveness when it comes to his mate and Lyrica being the typical heroine of not just allowing him to tell her what to do, which he does, Lol. Filled with murder, suspense, action, so many kaugh out loud moments, hot sex between the two plus revelations and cameos from my favorite book of the series, Rebel's Karma, who features Karma coming back to see Vero. It was emotional, beautiful and of course Benny being the alpha he is when it comes to his mate, was being super protective. Lol. I do feel like the ending was a bit rushed but I still loved it. 4 stars.

Most of this series of paranormal creatures, Dark Protectors, the Kurjans were the enemy. Now with the alliance, we get the story from a Kurjan perspective through Vero Phoenix. He's stepped out of his comfort zone in the lab to back his half brother Pax as king and become his protector and enforcer. To add to his trouble, he's forced to work with Lyrica, an empath human who's helping the women who'd been kidnapped adjust to normal life. Vero and Lyrica clash at every turn and their fights and banter mask the attraction they both feel.
This is a great new installment to the series. It can be read as a standalone but the backstory makes more sense if you read the other books first. It's been awhile since I've read one but it only took a few chapters to fall back into the Dark Protector world. I loved Vero and Lyrica!

Vero Phoenix is a Kurjan and has backed his brother as king of the Kurjan’s. The peace between the Kurjans and The Realm, the Dark Protectors, is finally in place. Vero is his brother’s second and protector. Lyrica Graves is a specially enhanced human and is kidnapped by the Kurjan’s, before the new king. Now she is trying to help the other kidnapped females modernize and free them, if they want. They are brought to be mates for a Kurjan. Lyrica has no family and plans to leave. The electricity between Vero and Lyrica lights the whole place. But someone is killing females and leaving them in the snow. There is no evidence except for a circle with three slashes left on the bodies. The Cyst are going to be arriving ( they are the spiritual leaders of the Kurjan ) and hopefully sign a contract with the Kurjan nation to reunite them. Can they find the killer before someone else is taken?
Action. Suspense. Steamy. A Kurjan and a human. Opposites attract. Vero is big, strong, and protective. Lyrica speaks her mind. They are perfect for each other. Loved this book.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ this was my least favorite book in the series. It wasn’t so much about the Kurjans suddenly becoming allies. I can get over that because there are going to be so many issues from the nation as a whole as the series continues, that we’ll see them figuring it out.

But Vero and Lyrica just didn’t work. There was very little chemistry between them. Most of their conversations had to do with setting up their new camp and the threat coming at them. I was more interested in Hunter and Vero’s relationship. However, that wrapped up too quickly, like every aspect of this novel. The last two chapters threw it all together and suddenly everything is fine.

Will keep reading as I want Hunter, Libby, and Jonathan’s storylines.

Lyrica is a feisty human in a world of Kurjan. She’s there to make sure other females are there of their own free will. These alpha males are bossy and over the top protective.

Vero is second in command to his brother. Now that there is a truce between not everyone is happy about it. He wants Lyrica for himself.

“Because if anyone took you from me, I’d burn the world to ash to find you—and I’d tear through the wreckage with bloody hands until nothing remained.”

This one is filled with suspense and conflict. A great edition to this long time series.

I have enjoyed this series, but this one was just blah. I did not enjoy the FMC, Lyrica was annoying and somewhat wishy-washy. The MMC, Vero, had potential, but seemed so different from descriptions in other books. I understand he was viewed as an enemy in this books, but it has hard to wrap my mind around the switch. He had potential and I would have enjoyed his character without the previous knowledge. This book was kind od incomplete in both the romance and plot parts and neither seemed to come together naturally.

Lyrica is a very annoying h .

The relationships here are superficial to superficial .

Vero is OK , but not what he was in the other books , he would have been ok even then , but he felt , like the plot and the whole book a mishmash of things with no defining factor or real personality of his own.
The book lacks a personality but it does have a potential and avenues she could have dug a little more in depth .

It could still have been ok , if Lyrica the h had not been beyond annoying , just 🙄 was my expression whenever she was on page .

*Cette chronique est basée sur un NetGalley ARC en échange d'un avis neutre et honnête*

Genre & Tropes : Romance paranormal x Suspense plot x Vampires / Demons but with a scientific twist x Mates x Touch her and Die x Spicy

PS2 : to the publisher and Netgalley, thank you so much for the ARC =D

*This review is based on a NetGalley ARC in exchange for a neutral and honest review*

Small clarification : in theory, this book marks the beginning of a new cycle, so you can start with this one, but it's much more interesting if you read the entire series from the first book !

FINALLY the book with Veeroooooo !!

Since all the revelations in Warrior's Hope, I've been eagerly awaiting this book with Vero ! I started this series years ago, and if someone had told me that one day I'd read a book with a Kurjan (the ultimate villains since the first book) ... NEVER !!

And yet, here we discover the Kurjans in a different light and facing many changes with a new king and a new organization ... AND I loved discovering their entire workings, their customs, their difficulties ...

And of course Vero <3
Vero, whom we knew as a child and whom I absolutely loved discovering as a badass and sexy adult who seduces Lyrica, a very, very stubborn human (and whom I admit I liked a little less ><)

The plot with the murders and the mysterious group was fascinating, and I can't wait to learn more about their intentions !

In short, a paranormal romance that I loved and devoured and which marks the beginning of a new cycle that I can't wait to discover !

PS 1: I NEED a book with Hunter !!

PS2 : to the publisher and Netgalley, thank you so much for the ARC =D

4.5stars-PRINCE OF DARKNESS is the seventeenth full-length instalment in Rebecca Zanetti’s contemporary, adult DARK PROTECTORS paranormal/ fantasy romance series. This is Kurjan Prince Vero Phoenix, and human empath Lyrica Graves’ story line. PRINCE OF DARKNESS can be read as a stand alone but for backstory and cohesion, I recommend reading the series in order or at the very least, reading WARRIOR’S HOPE. PRINCE OF DARKNESS is the start of a new series arc focusing on the Kurjan nation.

SOME BACKGROUND: For thousands of years the Kurjan empire had been at war with the Realm. Like the vampires, there were no females Kurjans, and the Kurjan nation would kidnap and claim enhanced human females as their mates, but the mating between half vampire/ half human Hope Kayrs-Kyllwood, the Realm King’s daughter, and the new king of the Kurjan nation Paxton Phoenix would begin to solidify a tentative peace treaty but some of the Kurjans refuse to bow to the King of the Realm, and the Kurjan nation is at war with itself.

Told from dual omniscient third person perspectives (Vero and Lyrica) PRINCE OF DARKNESS follows the building relationship between Kurjan Prince Vero Phoenix, and human empath Lyrica Graves. Struggling in his position as second in line, Prince Vero Phoenix declares himself guardian and protector of his half brother, the King, but the presence of the female human empath Lyrica Graves stirs something deep within our story line hero. Vero never expected to mate or fall in love but the rescue, arrival and murder of several human females finds Vero decidedly protective of our story line heroine. Someone is targeting the Kurjans, and Vero is determined to find out why.

The world building opens up an entirely new direction for the Dark Protectors series. The Kurjans and their spiritual leaders the Cysts were and some continue to be the enemy of the Realm but like all hate there is usually a precipitating factor or someone pushing the buttons behind the scenes.

The relationship between Lyrica and Vero is an enemies to friends to lovers relationship in which Vero struggles with his attraction to the feisty heroine. Lyrica Graves is an independent human female, a woman with empathic powers, but a woman who refuses to obey the orders of any man including the man with whom she is falling in love. The $ex scenes are limited but passionate and intense.

There is a large ensemble cast of powerful, energetic and sometimes questionable secondary and supporting characters including numerous Kurjan warriors -Jonathan and Silas, tech genius Lukas and Genevieve, several mated couples including Maeve and Ralstad; as well as the return of Paxton and Hope, twins Liam and Collin, Vero’s best friend Hunter, Benjamin Reese and his mate Karma, Dr. Fizzlewick, King Zane, and Queen Janie Kayrs. The requisite evil has many faces.

PRINCE OF DARKNESS is a story of power and control, betrayal and vengeance, madness and murder, family and friendships, relationships and love. The character driven premise is action packed, intriguing, enchanting, and dramatic; the characters are charismatic and determined; the romance is fated yet flawed.

Book #17 in the Dark Protectors series, and it’s the beginning of a brand new story arc! Longtime fans will love the new direction that the series is taking, and newbies can jump in to the world without feeling lost. It’s a great story set in one of my favourite paranormal worlds, and I really enjoyed this book.

The Kurjan nation have been the long-time enemies of the Realm of supernatural races that make up this series (vampires, demons, shifters and witches). Now, things are changing. The war is over, there is a tentative peace, and with new leadership, the Kurjans are trying to strengthen their nation and adjust to their new reality. Leading the way is Vero, who is the half-brother of the new Kurjan king, and who is in the heart of the political turmoil as he fights for peace and stability for his people as they struggle to adjust to the real (modern) world.

Lyrica is a human woman who was kidnapped by the Kurjans as a potential mate. She was freed with the change of leadership, and she has stayed on to help other women who were taken like she was. Her role sees her dealing daily with Vero, who is grumpy and broody and who seems to barely tolerate her existence.

One of his dark eyebrows rose. “You just shoved me.”
Huh. Good point. “I didn’t think I could hurt you” The idea seemed ridiculous. He stood twice her size and remained immortal.
“My feelings are devastated.”

It’s an enemies-to-lovers romance set within a rapidly changing world, and not everybody is happy with the new direction for the Kurjans. While Lyrica is organising speed-dating events to help break the ice between the humans and the Kurjans, women are being murdered, and Vero is dealing with a series of attacks on their new home. It’s exciting and action-packed, and as Vero works hard to protect his people and rebuild, he and Lyrica find themselves drawn closer and closer together until their attraction explodes and they find themselves in a relationship that neither of them expected.

Of all people, the enforcer for the entire Kurjan nation could not be her safe place to land.

It's fun and fast-paced, and I really enjoyed Vero and Lyrica’s story. The grumpy/sunshine element is lots of fun (I do love me a grumpy hero), and the love story is slow-building but passionate. I didn’t feel a lot of emotion between these two, but I did enjoy watching them come together.

“Take all the time you need to learn this,” he said, his voice rough, his thumb brushing her jaw. “You’re mine, Lyrica. I won’t let anybody harm you – whether you like that fact or not.”

I loved being back in this world and seeing glimpses of characters from previous books as the second-generation of the Dark Protectors kids make their way out in the world. I remain hopelessly addicted to the series, and can’t wait for more.

3.5 stars.

Series: Dark Protectors #17
Rating: 4 stars - It was really good

In the aftermath of war, there is a fragile peace between the Kurjan nation and the Realm. Vero Phoenix is determined to protect his newfound brother and king, and that means continuously putting himself in dangerous positions as his enforcer. But while he is focused on protecting his brother and finding peace for the Kurjan nation, he is also dealing with his growing feelings for a captivating human.

It was so nice jumping back into this world to learn what is happening after the defeat of Ulric and a new Kurjan leader taking the throne. This is the first book that is told completely by a Kurjan and in the Kurjan nation, so I really enjoyed learning about this group that has been the enemy for the majority of the series.

I was instantly sucked into Vero’s story of protecting his newfound brother and king, and struggling with his feelings for Lyrica. Vero is protective, strong, and a bit traumatized from his past. He is struggling a bit under all the changes to his life, and his growing feelings for Lyrica. I liked seeing him grow closer with Paxton and actually act like a brother to him, not just his king. What we learn of Vero’s past was tragic and I liked seeing him overcome the trauma with the help of his brother and Lyrica. Also, his friendship with Hunter was very emotional but I like that we see him start to forgive Hunter for betraying him.

Lyrica was an independent, controlling, and a bit hard-headed woman who kind of believes that all men are untrustworthy and that marriage is a shackle not a partnership. It was interesting getting to know her and see her overcome her fears of relationships. My biggest issue with Lyrica was that we never get a real good reason why she is so mistrustful of relationships and marriage.

This was a bit of a slow-building romance because they both are determined to not find a mate. They actually start with a temporary contract for a fling but that doesn’t last long at all. Once Vero realizes she is his mate he goes all in and is determined to win her over, which I really liked. I enjoyed how protective he was of her and even though she pushed back against his protection, he also seemed to understand her need for control. It really felt like these two had to work for their relationship because they both had baggage they had to overcome before they were ready to go all in with their mating.

Overall, I really enjoyed this one and how it finally presented us with a Kurjan’s POV. Vero and Lyrica were a very interesting couple that I enjoyed. I also really enjoyed seeing how the future of the Realm after the war and how they are working to actually bring peace between all the nations. I don’t know if there will be more books for this series, but I look forward to them if there are.

Love and Resistance in the New Kurjan World

Lyrica is a captured, enhanced woman during Drake's rule. She was a fighter since capture and is now a representative for bringing the Kurjan mates into the current century after Paxton became King of the Kurjan's.

Vero is Paxton's half-brother and Drake's  cousin, who often got pulled into Hope's dream world as a kid. He was always too kind to be considered a true Kurjan, and we found out the mystery behind why in this book. He is now faced with being the King's, aka his brothers, right-hand man. While trying to come to terms with his newfound position and all the changes the Kurjan nation is facing, he still can't seem to feel whole. He feels betrayed by his "best friend" Hunter, misunderstood by his brother, Paxton, and wronged by the entire nation as a whole. To top it all off, he can't help but bump heads with Lyrica.

All of this is going on while he tries to help Paxton get the support of the 40 Cysts at the Convexus, the Kurjan Dark Solstice, or there will be an internal war they will not survive. It all seems simple enough, except there are traders amongst them who seem to want to do anything to bring both him and Paxton down.

Lyrica and Paxton appear to be your typical enemies to lover trope, but as you read more of the book, you discover there was always something there both of them wanted to fight and explore at the same time. Through their interactions, they both learn to appreciate themselve for who they are and learn to love and trust. I absolutely loved seeing this version of Vero. He is way different than how he was portrayed in previous books, and I was totally here for it.

We see more of the faces we love and are introduced to some new faces. Some of my favorites include Maeve and Jonathan. Maeve and Ralstad's, her mate, dynamic was different from that of most Kurjans mated from centuries ago, and it was absolutely adorable. Jonathan was loyal and actual was trying hard to come into the modern world, although he considered himself slower than other Kurjans.

But you can't have a dark protectors book without a "big bad." Who just happens to be our "friends", The Defenders! Only this time, they have a different mission, to stop the new rulers of the Kurjan nation and to keep the Kurjan's as they always were.

With another faction of "The Defender's brought to justice, things seem to be coming along at the end. Vero finds love, the 40 Cyst join the Kurjan nation, and they also have aligned with the realm. The book ends on a happy note, but nothing lasts forever.... what will the other factions of the Defenders do next?

Usually, by the end, we figure out who is up next, but I couldn't really tell this time. I think it may be Libby and Jonathan, but I guess we will have to wait and see.

Although there was a short novella since the Kurjans were defeated in Warrior’s Hope, it’s been a year and a half since that full-length book. It took my brain a minute to catch up to the story. Especially since the Kurjans were always seen as the bad guys (other than Vero). Now, we have Paxton as their king and Vero as his right-hand man, trying to ally his people with the rest of the Realm.

I’ll admit it took me a minute to get into the adult, alpha, protector Vero. He was so etched in my brain as the more timid young man who tried to help Hope and her friends when they were young. I know he’s been shown as a grown-up, just not so prominently. So I had to get little Vero out of my brain and let this Vero take charge.

There was a lot going on in this story. Not only is Vero worried about uniting the Kurjans under Paxton, there are also dead bodies popping up all over their land. There’s no telling who to trust, as not everyone is onboard with Pax being king or letting the humans go free. Then there’s Lyrica. A thorn in his side that he can’t stop thinking about.

Lyrica has such a huge heart. She just wants to do right by the other human women, whether they were recently kidnapped by the bad Kurjans or have been mated to a Kurjan for centuries. The problem is that Lyrica has a hard time thinking outside the box. She knows how much she loves her freedom and autonomy and can’t understand why anyone would feel differently. This causes more than one tense situation with the Kurjan soldiers, and is a big bone of contention between her and Vero.

I’m glad Lyrica didn’t back down when it came to things she felt were important. Sometimes she was proven wrong, but she wasn’t cowed by Vero or Pax. She slogged on with what she believed in until she could tangibly see it was the wrong course of action. And she also helped Vero find his softer side. He was such a kind child, but so much had been taken away from him through the years. Vero had hardened his heart to anything other than helping and protecting his people. These two were as fantastic a couple as I had hoped they would be.

As always, the author sprinkles moments of humor to help break up the tension in this series. There are so many people I still want to see get their HEA, yet I’m unsure who the enemy is going to be when so many different factions have been brokering peace deals. I’m sure the author will think of something; she always does.

**Full disclosure: I received an ARC of this book the day before it was released, but I had already preordered the book and hadn’t seen the email until after the publication date. What I’m saying is, I would have read this book regardless of receiving an ARC or not. As always, my opinions are my own and given freely.**
