I was actually pleasantly surprised by this book! I loved the immediate and palpable chemistry between the main characters, the depth and backstory of them both, and the overall plot/story line.
The MMC is a delicious, masculine, emotionally intelligent man and I loved him from the moment he was introduced.
The MFC is witty, fun, driven, and so caring.
I thought this was such a fun read. I absolutely ate it up.

This was okay—not bad per se, but it didn't get me fully invested in the story.
Elodie (30) and Gage (33) met at his bar, where she's a patron. He finally approached her one night, and the two of them talked and flirted with each other. But it was a busy night for Gage, so Elodie decided to just leave. Since their interaction left her quite hot and bothered, she decided to order a toy, which she accidentally addressed to the bar. Gage then delivered it to her the next day and afterwards asked her to go on a date. She agreed to it, but it ended sooner because Elodie's sister called her. But on this date, they came up with a plan to start a business venture mixing their specialties. Chocolates from Elodie and alcohol from Gage. They partnered up, and both decided not to mix business with pleasure, despite the mutual attraction.
They pretended to be a couple to secure a location for their store because the owner thought they were one.
It honestly didn't make any sense to put a rule on not doing any hanky-panky because they were still being handsy with each other. They said they needed boundaries, and getting involved on a personal level might complicate things and ruin their charade and business partnership. Yet when they're together, they just can't keep their hands off of each other.
There was also a lot of push and pull from both sides, and it was a bit exhausting to read. One minute they're hot for the other, and the next they act so cold, like they didn't do anything together.
As for the actual marriage, it happened around 60%—a bit late for my taste, but whatever. And this is where they finally decided to add the "benefits" part to their setup. This also falls under insta-love because the timeline of the story was two months: one month of fake engagement and one month of being married.
They made a routine that works for them and for the kids (H's daughter and h's sister) involved. It's cute to see them bond as a family and how these four openly communicate with each other about everything that's going on in their lives. I liked that they didn't hide the "fake" part of their relationship in the beginning and how Eliza (daughter) and Amanda (sister) were in it too. Gage and Elodie never treated them like they couldn't handle the predicament that they were in, and actually, they were more than happy to ask for their opinions.
As for the romance, idk, I feel like something was missing. I didn't feel that off-the-charts chemistry between them. Sure, there's attraction and emotional understanding, but the tension isn't that palpable; it was lacking, imo, probably because there's no build-up between them. They went from strangers to lovers in a flash and were put on hold for awhile because of their responsibilities. I tried to connect with them, but it just didn't work.
Overall, this was still a good read, but it didn't hold my interest for very long. Though this didn't work for me, other readers might feel differently. 😅

I read the previous two books in this series in preparation for this. I have to say, this one is my favorite of the three so far! I’m a sucker for single parents. It’s always so sweet when the other person bonds with the kid. This book had that times 2! Gage is a widowed father and Elodie is raising her sister after their parents died. Near the end, Eliza(Gage’s daughter) tells Elodie ‘and I think I love you’ and it made me tear up! It was probably my fav part of the whole book even though it was such a small thing. Like I said I’m a sucker for the single parent trope.
I was excited for this book because I already knew I’d love Elodie. I always loved her chapters because she was so independent and brave but also easily allowed herself to be vulnerable.
Gage is my fav male main character in these books so far too. He is incredibly self aware. He is intentional with his words and actions. He also is nothing but honest. There was no third act breakup in this book because he does the thing where he actually tells her how he feels!
I loved the tension between the two so much. I loved the growth of their relationship, it all felt so much more real than the previous two books to me. I also loved the sex positive vibes going on. They were both completely open and unafraid with one another. I found that all to be very refreshing.
Overall, I loved this book! It was a lot of fun. There’s no drama between the two main characters. It’s all just very sweet and a natural progression of 2 single parents falling in love.
I’m happy I was able to receive an ARC for it. All opinions stated above are my own.

DNF at 11%
I just couldn’t go on. I dislike Elodie for her comment.
“I don’t train men to be better in bed. And no women should either”
Is a gross statement to make. Especially in a book that’s trying to push sex positivity.
Imagine if a man had said
“I don’t train women to be better in bed. And no man should either”
It’s gross. It’s sexist. It’s not sex positive.
It’s full of assumptions that a partner can just read your mind and know what to do.
You can become more skillful with practice.
This statement shames people with less experience.
Maybe…you could communicate and/or show them what you like? That would be empowering. That would be sex positive.
But a statement like what Elodie made is just not it and I can’t get behind this book.
I just couldn’t go on. I dislike Elodie for her comment.

Lauren Blakely does it again. Another book that was not only a good time but a spicy time too. Her books always have me having the best time while reading them and I love every minute.
A chocolatier and a bar owner decide to have a fake engagement in order to get a business deal and from there its all uphill. With a little bit of “my wife” and “you’re mine”, The Almost Romantic is a must add to the TBR if you’re in need of something fun, spicy, and a page turner from start to finish.
I absolutely adored Eloise and Gage and if you’re in the mood for a fluffy, but spicy romance to read in one day, The Almost Romantic is a must read.

Audiobook Review:
Finally! After a string of immature contemporary romances, this one delivers a very real feeling couple. They communicate, they say sorry, there’s no breakup. So refreshing!
This story started out with a little quirkiness that I thought was going to be out of the realm of any normal person like a lot of other romances have done lately, but that’s not it at all.
Elodie owns a boutique chocolate shop and Gage is a former pro baseball player who owns a bar nearby. They go on a real date, but they end up having to pretend to be engaged to embark on a new and promising business venture together.
They don’t go into a fake engagement lightly because Elodie is the caretaker for her 13 year old sister and Gage has an 11 year old daughter. Although their engagement is fake, they end up getting real married to protect Elodie from a threatening competitor. During their fake/real marriage, they bring their families together and they all decide that this is the life they really want. It’s all so healthy, sweet and spicy!
Maybe I’m feeling a bit jaded lately with my book choices, but this is the kind of real life contemporary romance I love getting lost in. No man-whore, no miscommunications, no weird spice, no immaturity. I thoroughly appreciate it!
The audio is great in duet.

The vibe of this book reminds me of a hallmark rom-com movie or a netflix exclusive movie, it was a cheesy one but still a feel good read. I liked the fake dating/marriage, it was entertaining but some dialogues made me cringe 😭 and i find that some moments on their fake relationship are a little bit inconvenient in the sense that they dug their own hole and created a bigger problem.
As much as this was a fun, steamy, and light, I didn’t feel connected to Gage and Elodie’s characters. I think this is because their physical relationship escalated so fast. They just didn’t stick to me that much 🤷🏻♀️

I absolutely loved this book.
It was swoony, funny, and so sweet.
I love an emotionally intelligent MMC. Gage was perfect. He was an incredible single dad! He was also HILARIOUS!!! I loved the banter between him and Elodie! The first scene with them together after she left his bar had me absolutely HOOKED right away! And every time he said "my wife" I melted!
Elodie was such a sweet FMC. She truly just needed someone to be her person, so she wasn't fighting all her battles alone. Her and Gage fit so perfectly together with their girls!
This was also my first Lauren Blakely book and I can't wait to read more! I loved her writing style.

The Almost Romantic by Lauren Blakely is the third book in the How to Date series and this one was so much fun!
Elodie owns a chocolate shop, but is considering selling it so that she can send her sister, whom she is raising, to the art school that she really wants to attend. She also finds herself flirting with the bartender at her favorite bar, and inadvertently sends him a package at the bar meant for herself.
Gage is not only a bar owner, but a single dad. He's hoping to open a second bar location to make additional money to support his daughter. He thought he had an idea for the second location, but then he keeps changing his mind and the landlord isn't helping either.
While Gage and Elodie have known one another casually, it's the package that was delivered to him at the bar intended for her that really gets their conversation going. Once they dream up a business idea that might have merit for the two of them together, they decide to go into business together and keep things between them platonic even though the sparks were flying while they were flirting. Best laid plans, right?! Well, of course, until the landlord they rent space from for their business venture assumes they are a couple and they tell him they are a committed couple in order to land the space. Now they are fake engaged with an end date to the engagement. Will it really be that easy? Will they be able to keep feelings out of it and really just be business partners and friends?
There were several twists and turns in this rom-com that I wasn't anticipating and that made it all the better! Not to mention, Elodie's sister and Gage's daughter were quite the dynamic duo when they got together! This book had sweetness, spice and everything nice too! I would definitely recommend it!

Once they dream up a business idea that might have merit for the two of them together, they decide to go into business together and keep things between them platonic even though the sparks were flying while they were flirting. Best laid plans, right?! Well, of course, until the landlord they rent space from for their business venture assumes they are a couple and they tell him they are a committed couple in order to land the space. Now they are fake engaged with an end date to the engagement. Will it really be that easy? Will they be able to keep feelings out of it and really just be business partners and friends?
There were several twists and turns in this rom-com that I wasn't anticipating and that made it all the better! Not to mention, Elodie's sister and Gage's daughter were quite the dynamic duo when they got together! This book had sweetness, spice and everything nice too! I would definitely recommend it!

This was such a cute and fun fake engagement / marriage of convenience story!
I loved that Elodie was a chololatier and that she met Gage at the bar he owned! Their meet cute is definitely one you'll have to read, it had me cracking up!
One of my favorite parts of the story was their kids and how they added the perfect little bit of meddling.

Gage is the owner of Sticks and Stones a popular bar (and a feature of previous books) and Elodie is a fabulous Chocolatier 🍫. Both are raising teenage girls alone, Gage a widower and Elodie raising her sister.

Lauren Blakely is one of my absolute favorite authors and every time I read or listen to another one of her books I’m reminded of why. The Almost Romantic: How To Date Your Fake Husband by Lauren Blakely is one of my new favorites. I loved the first in the series of standalones, My So-Called Sex Life, but I missed the next in the series, Plays Well With Others. I never felt like I missed anything, so The Almost Romantic stands perfectly alone.
The Almost Romantic started with an awesome meet-cute when Elodie stopped into Sticks and Stones for a takeout order, and Gage, hot, tattooed bartender/owner finally got a minute to flirt with her. But when he got so busy he didn’t have time to make it back to her, Elodie took matters into her own hands and ordered herself a new sex toy to her apartment with 1-hour delivery. Only it never showed up.
“Elodie Starling.” It’s like he’s having fun saying the name on the package. “I believe this is for you.” He dangles the pink envelope as if it’s a prize when really it’s a billboard advertising good girls with dirty desires.
Nick and Elodie were both bringing up tween/teen girls. Nick was a single dad who wanted to open another more upscale version of his bar and Elodie (30) was raising her 13-year-old sister after their parents died. She is a chocolatier who is thinking of accepting a buy-out offer for her chocolate shop to pay for her sister’s art school.
During a perfect first date, strolling hand-in-hand, Elodie and Gage came across a pop-up shop at a local resort hotel and jokingly discussed what they would do with the space together—special cocktails and chocolate tastings. But the idea stuck with them. However if Gage and Elodie wanted to do business together, they knew they would have to put their budding romance aside and keep it strictly business.
The hotel owner was so excited to rent them the space, mistakenly thinking they were engaged, which he made clear was important. When the kids both suggest they just pretend, they try it even though they made a pact to keep it strictly business. The problem was that pretending to be in love in public and not in private kept it all confusing.
“When I’m with Elodie, I don’t feel like I’m faking a thing. With her I don’t feel like I’m constantly racing toward the future. I feel like I’m living in the moment, and each moment with her is the only place I want to be.”
Sigh….Gage… I loved his possessive “my wife” vibe. I loved Elodie and her mature, knows-what-she-wants in bed attitude. They were both great parents who communicated well with the kids and honestly, this whole book just made me happy.

•Their girls, Amanda and Eliza, and how they bonded.
•A meddling grandma.
•I loved Elodie. She was so vibrant and open.
•Gage was so possessive and protective but still sweet and caring.
•The genuine respect and friendship between them. They were so supportive of each other.
•Great banter.
•Smart and inclusive.
•No big breakup moment.
•The perfect amount of sex for the story.
Dislikes:
•None.
Note:
The only thing that holds me back from 5 stars is that it isn’t epic or memorable enough—there wasn’t a huge book hangover, and I’m not flashing back to it days later. I don’t expect Lauren's books to be like that, they are perfect as-is, and she writes enough of them that they are more like your favorite pizza that you have to have at least every couple of weeks vs. the fancy restaurant you go to for celebrations.
The Narration:
What can I even say about Vanessa Edwin and Teddy Hamilton? Lauren writes her stories with the narrators already in mind and it shows. They perfectly embody the characters and the duet narration makes you feel like you are right there with them. I love Lauren’s books no matter how I read them, but a Lauren Blakely audiobook is always something special.
The Down & Dirty (TLDR):
I love almost every Lauren Blakely book but The Almost Romantic is one of my favorites. I was so consumed by the book that when I saw it was going by too quickly I slowed it down to savor the happy, upbeat vibes. The duet narration by Vanessa Edwin and Teddy Hamilton brought the characters and their story to life and I want more of this blended family. I'm glad the series will continue, and hopefully we will catch glimpses of them. The story easily stands alone and it’s just perfect for anyone looking for a mature, smart, light, feel-good romance with enlightened characters. Don’t skip The Almost Romantic by Lauren Blakely, you’ll be missing out on a gem.

This was such an engaging story with so much heart and plenty of spice.
I love Elodie, she’s this pin-up looking, chocolatier business owner who is straight forward, confident and has the biggest heart. She’s very s€x positive, I think it’s so fantastic to represent that in romance especially. She’s adorable, strong and raising her much younger sister since their parents sudden death. The two have such a lovely, fun relationship.
Gage is accomplished, generous, super hot, he is really romantic and truly listens which shows how much he cares. He had one season in MLB and had a career ending injury. Now he’s a Bar & Grill owner and single dad. He’s so swoon worthy.
He’s such involved a fantastic Dad to his daughter and that really is the cherry on top.
The two go into a side business together and decide no more s€xy times, they need the business to be drama free. With their attraction and growing friendship that becomes impossible. I love the tension, the flirting is butterfly inducing and the cute banter is so entertaining.
Fake engagement and marriage make the way into the story and I love the way it all happens.
The secondary characters are great, especially their family members. Kids and Grandma steal scenes in the best way.

I read the ARC about a week or so ago and I had such a huge smile on my face over every single moment that of course, I ran to Audible as soon as I woke up yesterday and 🎧happiest of sighs🎧 *heart eyes* (seriously, Vanessa Edwin is gold narrating Elodie. GOLD! Obvs Teddy was on-point as well, but she was GOLD!) Okay, so I just finished the audio a few hours ago and now I’m reviewing.

The spice? Deliciously vanilla-adjacent but Gage makes vanilla taste like a sin. Dirty, rough, commanding yet somehow the softest man alive when it comes to her heart. He supports her dreams, hugs away her anxiety and lives to find loopholes in their fake arrangement just to bring her pleasure.
Grams is delightfully devious, the kids are full-on Parent Trap schemers and the rival chocolatier twat-waffle is slimey enough to loathe and actively wish for his downfall. The chapter titles? Dangerously effective. One more chapter turned into whoops, finished the book.

This book was absolutely adorable!!! Elodie and Gage both are into each other from the first time they saw each other. Gage gets a package at his restaurant and when he opens it he sees it’s for Elodie. She sent there on accident while she was waiting for a Togo order. He brings it back and asks her on a date. The date was perfect. They had great conversation and amazing chemistry. During that date they saw a little hole in the wall spot for rent. They both thought it would be a great chocolate tasting (for Elodie) and paired with mixed drinks (for Gage). They set up an appointment to apply for that spot. The owner loves their love and offers them the spot. Problem is. They’re not in love. They’re just business partners to grow their own individual businesses.
Throw in their both single parents, both super busy in life and don’t want to get hurt. Problem is, their kids, family and friends make sure they do fall in love with each other.

This was such a fun little read. It’s the first I’ve read in the How To Date series, but I loved how it still connect to Lauren’s other series of Why Choose Hockey. (Seriously, what IS in the water there with all the throuples? 😉)
Okay… maybe I’m a wee bit biased because well.. we have a whole character in here named Amanda. That’s going to be a whole bonus star from me. Even without the awesome name, the characters here were great! Gage was totally swoon-worthy as our MMC.
I’m definitely going back to read some other stories in this series now.

The Almost Romantic was such a fun, flirty read equal parts sweet and very spicy. The chemistry between the main characters was off the charts, and the banter had me smiling throughout. I really enjoyed how their relationship grew from playful tension to something much more emotionally satisfying.
I listened to the audiobook, and the narration by Teddy Hamilton and Vanessa Edwin was amazing they brought so much life, emotion, and heat to the story. Their performances definitely made the spicy scenes even spicier and the heartfelt moments land beautifully.
A quick, steamy, and charming listen that hit all the right romance beats.

This is probably one of my fave, Lauren Blakely reads. I loved everything about Elodie and Gage's relationship, fake and otherwise. The way they go from amazing date to a fake couple to a real married couple was such a fun ride. I love the way they fit together so much. They are both such caring people, and I think some of that comes from their care for Amanda and Eliza. The two of them were also a great addition, and I loved how they became fast friends and all their plotting. This was such a good read and I didn't want to stop reading.

I simply do not know why I finished this. Oh wait, I do. It's because ny stubborn ass swore to never dnf a book anymore.
The characters felt very bland and the story kept flowing so easily, there was nothing gripping in it. Nothing that made me eager to finish it. The characters lack depth and chemistry and the whole fake fiancé and marriage thing was just there for the trope. It didn't make any sense to hide it. There was just no plot except them pretending to be together. The book overall was below average and a waste of time.

This was my first book by Lauren Blakely and I must say…I LOVED IT!!
The chocolate, the cocktails, the chemistry, the spice, it was so entertaining and enjoyable to read. I listened to some of it on audio and both of the narrators were terrific as well! Teddy Hamilton can do no wrong!
Highly recommend this book and I can’t wait to read more from this author!!
The chocolate, the cocktails, the chemistry, the spice, it was so entertaining and enjoyable to read. I listened to some of it on audio and both of the narrators were terrific as well! Teddy Hamilton can do no wrong!
Highly recommend this book and I can’t wait to read more from this author!!
