It was my first book from this author, and I found it quite pleasurable overall. The start was slow, but it did not diminish my interest in the story. The story then gained momentum and became increasingly interesting to me until the end. The author created some amazing scenes that I found unforgettable. This is one writer I will surely be reading again!

Thank you to Inkubator Books, Zoé from ZooLoo’s Book Tours, and the author for allowing me to read and review this book.

Jane and Joe need to move in with her mother, Helen. She is struggling with anxiety and has a problem with alcohol. She's never been right since the death of Jane's father years ago. Jane's brother, Dan, is on the scene but seems interested only in getting their mother to sell the house and go into a home.

This book made me feel really uneasy in places. With Jane being back in the family home and reliving what happened with her father (the gardai were never able to solve what happened to him), she starts to unearth a lot of things and Dan isn't happy. I was quite worried for her. Even when Joe was around as he had a drastic change in personality. The description of the house and the grounds gave me the creeps, so when Helen said she could see people in the trees I felt as nervous as she did.

The reveal wasn't what I thought, which shows good writing style as my train of thought had gone in another direction.

It just goes to show how people can suddenly change once money is involved. Some of the human race can be so greedy and then that overshadows the love of family, which should be more important.

Oh, this book is fully of messy, messy people.

As I read it, I noticed my eyes kept narrowing into slits because I was thinking THOUGHTS about some of these people – especially about Joe.

In truth, I didn’t like any of the characters. It also didn’t matter because they kept getting more and more extra and I couldn’t look away. I mean, it’s definitely a train wreck, but an entertaining one.

Also, if I ever behave like the people in this book, you have permission to lock me away forever.

A popcorn read that manages to be both entertaining and infuriating.

Thank you @zooloosbooktours for letting me read this one as part of its tour! Today is my turn to babble!

This book is told with two different character POVs, "present time" and "before"
We learn about Jane, what she went through as a child, her current life and how everything is coming back to haunt her. Will she finally get answers to the awful night her dad died? Then we get her husband Joe, dealing with his own messy business.

This is a slow burn but the short and snappy chapters always have something going on. It leaves you glued to the page wondering what happened before, what's going on now and of course, how will this all come to blows?
The plot twist felt very obvious very early on but I do feel this was the authors intention. I feel like rather than it being a shock to us, it was more toying with us while we waited for the answers to finally be revealed.

The writing and character development in this book was so good. You know why? I hated everyone! Helen and Dan were so frustrating and suspicious! Joe was also dirty and suspicious! Jane? She's a bit of a cow. Regardless of Joe's naughty doings, she speaks to him horrifically. This never felt like a relationship. Instead it felt like a mother talking down to her stroppy teenager. A manager disrespecting their inexperienced apprentice. The way she acted with Joe taking £350 out of their account was so frustrating! Why couldn't he have a life of his own? He literally did the majority of her work at her business with the deliveries and changing his life to help care for her mother. It would have been nice if in Jane's "before" chapters, we found out how she met Joe, just so we could have learn how their relationship started and why they held onto each other despite the fact they clearly were not working.

Disliking the characters really made me enjoy this more because I was desperate for all their crap to finally backfire in their faces! Mostly, it did.

This is a quick thriller and I recommend to those who enjoy slow burns with dislikable, untrustworthy characters, family mysteries and explosive truths getting very messy!!

I received this book from the author, the publisher (inkubator Books) and the fine folks at Booksprout in return for an honest review. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

The Inheritance by Kevin Lynch is an interesting read about greedy people without morals. Jane is haunted by her past. As a teenager, she witnessed the death of her father and the subsequent decline of her mother into alcoholism.

Jane has done everything within her power to stay away from her family home where the awful memories of that night come flooding back, but when she gets a call from her mother's doctor to say she’s declining and needs assistance at home, Her mother is ill and Jane and her husband Joe become caretakers for her and the decision is made for them to move back into the family home. She feels so uneasy there, and can’t stop the dark thoughts about back when her father was killed there. She's desperate for answers as to what happened to her father, the night he was killed, as the killer was never found.

Joe begins acting strangely and her brother, Dan seems very hostile too. Can Jane uncover the truth about what really happened on that fateful night?

A good thriller with a good plot. A bit of a slow burn and I would have liked a bit more pace in the story, but overall I enjoyed it.

As I found the story slow and plodding, I am not sure what the proper audience would be for this book as while the story was ok, it was not one of my favourites (it just did not have enough complexity to the story and I found the read to be a tad boring) from this publishing company. IAs such, I could only give this book three out five stars.

As with most of my literary ramblings, these are just my five cents worth.

*I did get this ARC from NetGalley*

This is the story of Jane. Her mother is sick and her and her husband, Joe, move into the house with her. This is the house where Jane found her father dead in the driveway - a murder that remains unsolved. She keeps reliving the day and remembering and finding clues that she did not have before. She must figure out how to balance taking care of her alcoholic mother, her lying brother, her lying husband, and the thoughts of her dead father.

Am I crazy or did nothing really happen during this book? Like I don't think I was spooked once. I think the killer was made super obvious and I actually thought that there would be some insane twist that would prove me wrong - and I guess there kind of was, but I was still underwhelmed. I also did not like the whole cheating vibe that was happening. I get that it got the story moving, but man oh man did I not like reading it.

Even though I'm giving this one star, I do think that there were some good things about this book. I liked that we kept switching point of views. Towards the end, I wish we got a Dan point of view or a Lara point of view. I also liked that we went back in time and we saw how little Jane found the clues and all the ways her childhood affected her adult self.

The Inheritance tells the story of Jane, a woman who returns to her family home to care for her mother. Her husband Joe moves in with her to help and they attempt to split the caregiving load. Soon after moving in, Joe becomes disenchanted with his new role as caretaker and delivery driver for his wife’s business. He begins a couple of new ventures and starts behaving strangely. Jane’s brother Dan lives nearby but he begins pressuring Jane to move their mother out to a care facility almost immediately.

Jane’s father was killed in the driveway when she was a teenager and the case was never solved. It happened in the middle of the night under mysterious circumstances and Jane has never been able to find satisfactory answers. Strange occurrences keep happening, Dan refuses to answer questions regarding that night, and her mother keeps hearing people or noises in the trees outside their house.

It took me a while to really get invested in the story. The book was more of a slow burn and I would call it more of a mystery than a thriller. The characters were mostly unlikeable, greedy, and shifty. The plot was good. I feel like there could have been more accomplished with this story, especially the backstory with the mother. I rated it three out of five stars.

A story very, very, close to home...
Many of us here of this all the time, parents start to get up in years, up in health issues, and then the children and their families need to step up to help out when and where needed.
Now, this story is kind of like that... and kind of not! Dad was killed years ago when the then kids, Jane and Dan, were still at home, and he was shot in the head, right outside their family home. When Jane gets to that mammoth of a home with her husband Joe, and settle in to see what is needed to be done for day to day life at that moment, Jane starts a mental run-down of all those years ago.... why was the killer never found? why was there no follow up later? It just happened, and then life without Dad started.
This was a good story that kept my interest, and was not exactly what I expected!
Thank you, Kevin Lynch for a good story!

Conflicted and still questioning the death of her father when she was young, Jane and her husband Joe move in with her mother to help with her declining health. Strange occurrences keep dredging up the past everyone is tense and on edge. In a desperate bid to discover the truth behind her dad’s murder and the unusual behavior of those around her, Jane finds out more than she bargained for.

This was an incredibly quick read and while the basic plot was intriguing, I found the style to be a little less mysterious than I was hoping for. The character development was brief and left me struggling to empathize with the main characters.

While this book was not for me, it had good elements of an old, creaky, mysterious house, family secrets, and the foundation for a suspenseful narrative!

Much thanks and appreciation to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for an advance copy to read! This was my genuine, honest review.

The Inheritance ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Jane and her husband, Joe, move in with Jane’s mom to help take care of her since her health is declining. While it is a big and beautiful house, it holds a lot of dark memories. Jane’s father was killed there and the murderer was never found. Now living back at home, Jane has lots of flashbacks to that night she found her dad. It also doesn’t help that Joe has started acting odd too. You can bury the dead, but you can’t bury the past and secrets don’t always keep.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. I didn’t really care for the characters, but I think that was the point. I did like how it was a dual point of view and the flashbacks from Jane to explain things in more detail. I also liked the writing style.

This book publishes on March 24, 2024. If you like a good family drama, whodunnit mystery then you’ll like this one. Thank you to NetGalley and Inkubator Books for my digital advanced readers copy. This is my honest and voluntary opinion.

⭐️⭐️⭐️
The Inheritance by Kevin Lynch is an interesting read about greedy people without morals. This was in the middle of I loved it and I didn't like it. It took me a while to get into this story. More or less it was evident who was the bad person but it was pinned around nicely with an "Oh wow" approach!

Jane and Dan's mother is ill and they must care about her. The house is amazing... and expensive! This house has secrets and bad memories...
Jane and her husband, Joe, move in with Jane’s mother but Dan is there to help from the outside. Jane never stops digging into what happened to their dad until she is dangerously close to the answer and her life now is in danger!

Janes father was murdered when Jane was a young girl, the events of that night still haunt her and she feels like not everything was as it was made out. Jane has done everything within her power to stay away from her family home where the awful memories of that night come flooding back, but when she gets a call from her mothers doctor to say she’s declining and needs assistance at home, Jane and her husband Joe step up to the task.

Upon returning, Jane’s unanswered questions surface and she starts to wonder what happened all those years ago, will she get to the truth? And if she does, at what risk?

I found this book quite a slow burn that didn’t have enough complexity to the story, meaning I was a little bored at times. This is my reason for the low star review

thanks for the ARC of this book, #NetGalley!

This book felt flat to me. I would not consider it a thriller and there was never a point where I felt on edge. The ending fell short and I would have preferred twists throughout the book since it fell flat.

The actual text on my kindle had spots where the spacing between the words were also off. There’s also some words that are for sure Irish based English that didn’t make sense to me, someone in the US reading it which was fine but I did want to call that out.

The concept wasn’t bad, I do love reading about a messy family with unhinged characters but I just felt like there was nothing making me turn the page. Just wished for more.

3.75 stars. The book started with a bang and piqued my interest right away, but I then found myself a bit bored throughout. None of the twists at the end surprised me (just how they’d end up there), and unfortunately I didn’t feel like the characters were well developed. They were messy and unhealthy, but the reasons for choices or even decisions made felt vague/not well explained. Because the characters felt underdeveloped, I also didn’t really care about what happened to them or engaging. I think the story and idea has a ton of potential, but I’d probably make it longer or at least more descriptive so I could root for or be mad at a character.

Thank you to Net Galley and Inkubator books for this ARC copy!

The book starts with the murder of Jane’s father when she was a teenager. It was never solved and this has bothered Jane ever since.
Jane is now running a successful forestry business and is married to Joe. Her mother has always suffered from anxiety and as this gets worse Joe and Jane rent out their house and move in with her. Jane’s brother Dan also starts popping in.
Joe has a fling with one of their customers. Now the stage is set for the unexpected turn of events.
This book could have been so good but the matter of fact, in fact boring style of writing lets it down.

The Inheritance revolves around the murder of a man in his own front yard and the subsequent unfolding of his family's secrets. His children return years later to care for their mother, forever changed by the tragedy. As secrets bubble to the surface, we're left to wonder just how far people will go for money.

This book is a slow burner. The timeline of can be confusing, especially due to inconsistencies between characters Jane and Joe. The ending is predictable, which may disappoint readers looking for a shocking twist.

Despite its shortcomings, The Inheritance offers psychological suspense without being overly dark or graphic. It's recommended for readers seeking a mild thriller.

Right from the opening pages when the crack of a gunshot rings out, Lynch holds you in suspense and adrenalin right until the very end, where the killer is finally uncovered.

It's a slow starter that soon picks up pace, descending into a fast paced thriller where you'll find yourself questioning your siblings, their motives and their love for their parents.

Lynch's books are quite short, making them the perfect size to devour in one sitting. I like his writing style, it's descriptive, immersive and exciting.

I've read several of Lynch's thrillers now via Zooloo's Book Tours and have thoroughly enjoyed them, and always look forward to his latest release with anticipation.

Jane and her husband, Joe, move in with Jane’s mom to care for her. Jane’s father was murdered on the front driveway when Jane was 14, and the murderer was never found. Now that Jane is back in the house, both her husband and brother are acting strangely, and Jane wants to know what happened to her father those many years ago. Will she uncover the truth before someone else dies?

I have to say there were no surprises in this book. From the start, the culprit seemed evident to me and it was who I thought it was. I strongly disliked all of the characters (except for maybe Tommy but he's a dog with a very minor part). Jane and Joe had to be the most annoying of all of them, because at least Dan had a slight air of mystery to him .... I was not overly impressed by the story, but it's getting 4 stars from me because I liked the writing style very much, and can't give half a star and it's definitely better than a 3 star read.

This read slowly pulls you in and keeps you guessing, that's for sure. There are twists and turns aplenty I did dislike quite a few of the characters but the writing is so skillfully done it just made the book even better and made me keep reading till the outcome which I definitely didn't see coming.
It's a great read, and I'm looking forward to reading more from this author in the future.

This is a well written book with strong characters and an interesting story filled with suspense, greed, memories and danger. He does a fantastic job painting his characters and bringing out my dislike for most of them. He moves the story fluidly with his descriptive scenes and delivers a terrific read.

3.5 to 4 start rating from me. This book had my mind reeling, who killed the father & why. I had my theories, and luckily I was on the right path. I didn’t “like” any of the characters, which was the point, they all had messy lives and alterier motives. The book kept me engaged, want ing to get to the bottom of the question, who killed dad? There were twists and turns, misleading information and distractions along the way (which made for a great story).

I received this book as an earc from Netgalley.

I liked this book. Jane and her husband Joe move in with Jane's mom to take care of her and see if she will need more care than just visiting often. I was not a fan of Joe even before I found out he was a cheater in the beginning. The twist wasn't really a twist for me, I pretty much figured it out pretty early on.

Overall, even though I rated it 3 stars, I still really liked the book. It was definitely a quick read!

I enjoyed this book a lot! It kind of snuck up on you the farther you got into the book. All of the characters were pretty unlikable and I personally didn't care what happened to any of them! The story was good. It had suspenseful moments and a bit of a surprise at the end.

A family, psychological and atmospheric thriller. Characters of dubious morality, in an inherited house and many secrets, set the tone for this story.
A quick read, somewhat predictable, well-developed characters.
