Thank you to Goodreads Giveaways and to author C.P. Schaefer for providing me with a Kindle copy of this science fiction/environmental thriller novel that has a dual timeline taking place in the summer of 2028 and in the late 1980s. This is the second novel by Schaefer that I have read. Earlier this year, I read and reviewed his other novel “The Kuiper Rogue.”
Strange natural occurrences are happening throughout the United States in the summer of 2028. There are wildfires in the desolate Alaska tundra despite there not being trees or other kindling, methane gas is bubbling out of lakes in the northern United States, a hole in the ozone layer permits harmful UV radiation to penetrate the atmosphere causing severe sunburns, the magnetic north has shifted from the North Pole to California causing extreme aurora brightness, the Florida coasts are beginning to recede as water levels rise, and strange creatures of unknown origin are seen in Alaska, the ocean, and in California.
Julia Gathers, the director of NOAA (the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), seeks to determine the exact cause of these disturbing events. Julia asks her daughter, Sara Gathers, an employee of NOAA, to investigate these unusual events. Sara, aided by Mason Hahn, a fisherman with an interest in environmental causes, and Ethan Sites, another employee of NOAA, determine that Earth may be experiencing a core shift, which causes magnetic north to shift south and magnetic south to shift north. A core shift releases tremendous magnetic energy from the Earth’s core that causes magnetic lines to shift. Birds, whales, and other animals that follow magnetic lines during migration are spotted in locations never previously seen and are acting in unnatural ways. The combination of a shift of magnetic north to the south and intense solar activity are causing bright auroras normally spotted around the Arctic Circle to be visible as far south as California. The bright auroras have historically been called the Northern Lights but are renamed by California residents as the Western Lights, and thus the title of this novel. Is there a relationship between the Northern Lights or Western Lights and the strange creatures that are spotted shortly after the magnetic pole shifts south? Will Sara, Mason, and Ethan be able to work with Julia to address these issues and save humanity? Can actions taken forty years previously be reversed so that these natural disasters can be avoided?
Schaefer is a talented science fiction writer who does best when his story stays within that genre as he interweaves scientific theory to support the plausibility of his plotlines. However, like his other novel “The Kuiper Rogue,” Schaefer tends to veer off into other genres where he is not as strong. For example, the romance between Sara and Mason seems strained and undeveloped. There is too much reliance on the “love at first sight” trope for comfort, and the romance is tangential to the main plot. In addition, what are the odds that the two main female characters, Julia and Sara, are both stunningly beautiful that attract the attention of all the male characters? Though the beautiful woman trope is customary in science fiction, it would be nice if an author in that genre would forego that tired trope. Second, the pacing in this book is uneven. The novel is divided into six parts, The first four parts, which account for about 60% of the book, tend to be slow, repetitive, and a bit overlong reading more like a scientific journal than a science fiction thriller. The remaining 40% of the book is interesting, action packed, and a page turner. Readers who are patient are rewarded in the later parts of the book. This novel is difficult to summarize as there are multiple genres at play with plot elements comparable to those from the 1990 book “Jurassic Park” by Michael Crichton, the 1992 book “Beast” by Peter Benchley, the 1985 film “Back to the Future,” and the 2000 film “Final Destination.” Patient readers with an interest in environmental science and climate change may enjoy this book.
The world in Western Lights is being ravaged by runaway climate change. It is too late to stop it. At the same time, our Sun is in a period of heightened electromagnetic activity, and to make matters worse, the magnetic core of the Earth is flipping. Magnetic north is moving, and not in small increments, but in huge leaps from one place to another.
The result is complete and utter chaos.
This mix of circumstances results in some beautiful, and very dangerous, Super Aurora displays. There are also some very strange time portals opening up all over the planet. Those portal appearances result in some extraordinary events that baffle scientists.
NOAA researcher, Sara Gathers, is a concerned citizen who is seeking a way to stop climate change. She has the answers, but it is probably too late to make necessary changes to arrest the process threatening all life on the planet. When the magnetic pole moves to California, she and her two companions vanish without a trace.
Sarah winds up decades in the past and sees an opportunity to change the deadly course of runaway climate change.
But how?
And that barely scratches the surface of the amazing story in the pages of Western Lights.
The tale centers on Sara Gaithers, a researcher who cares about the planet. Everything on the planet, and she knows how to get things done, very much like her mother, who is the director of NOAA (the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration - a branch of the U.S. Department of Commerce). She is smart and driven even at a time when it seems there is little hope of reversing the damage that has been done to the planet dating back to the time of the Industrial Revolution. She also has an uncanny ability to move people to taking action on her behalf.
Sara comes by her abilities naturally when considering the abilities of her mother, Julia. Julia knows the right people in high places and helps Sara obtain the resources she needs to do her job investigating the chaotic events taking place.
Mason Hahn is a pilot and he and Sara meet up in Bristol Bay in Southwest Alaska, where an event, probably as a result of the shifting magnetic pole, could end in disaster. Sara knows what needs to be done, and Mason knows how to improvise and get things done, and these characters make a great team. They also have feelings for each other, adding another dimension to the story, making it feel real. Mason and Sara are joined by a young wiz-kid.
Ethan Sites, Assistant Manager of Operations for a NOAA outpost, finds himself in the wilderness until he is rescued by Sara and Mason. He is great with computers and other electronic devices and, while a bit obnoxious at times, Ethan is a valuable asset to the group, as well as others. He is a fun character in the tale and often provides a little comic relief to some otherwise grim situations.
All the characters in Western Lights are believable people, and characters I grew to like and care about.
My favorite point of plot in this story is how the author not only provides a great story, but he also includes some factual, scientific information. But that is not all. There is also the introduction of paranormal events included in the story, adding color and an interesting wrinkle to heighten interest. This story has it all!
My takeaway from Western Lights is to remember that an intelligent, resourceful person can affect change if they are willing to take great risks.
Sara could have just lived in the past safe from climate change, but instead, she chose to work in the past to make the world a better place going forward.
Western Lights is a great story about people who care about the world and the people in it. There are some bizarre situations, one might even think absurd in a way, but in this day and age, when nearly anything seems possible, maybe not so far-fetched. It is a fast-paced tale with some fine characters that will have the reader caring about them and their plight. But this story will also make one think about our own future and what is to be done to make corrections before we tip over the edge, if that isn't the case already.
I give my highest recommendations for Western Lights, an entertaining and informative story.
Western Lights by C.P. Schaefer is a gripping sci-fi adventure that explores themes of climate catastrophe, time travel, and the resilience of the human spirit. The author paints a vivid picture of a world on the brink of destruction, creating a sense of urgency and tension that drives the narrative forward. One of the most captivating aspects of the book is the concept of Super Auroras and their role in creating paranormal time portals. This unique twist on the time travel genre adds a fresh layer of intrigue and sets the stage for Sara Gathers' extraordinary journey. Her sudden displacement to a time decades earlier is both disorienting and fascinating, and watching her navigate this unfamiliar world is enthralling. The author skillfully develops Sara's character, highlighting her determination and resourcefulness. Stranded in the past, Sara's mission to alter Earth's future is a race against time. Her struggle to convince others of her incredible story is compelling and adds a layer of emotional depth to the plot. The relationship dynamics, especially with someone she loves but who hasn't met her yet, add a poignant touch to the narrative. I particularly enjoyed the detailed descriptions of the world's changes and the science behind the core flip and magnetic shifts. These elements are well-researched and lend credibility to the story, making the sci-fi elements feel grounded and plausible. The pacing of the reading is perfect, keeping readers engaged with a mix of action, suspense, and thoughtful moments. The stakes are high, and the sense of impending doom is palpable, yet the story is infused with hope and the possibility of redemption. Western Lights is a must-read for sci-fi fans. It offers a unique take on time travel and climate fiction, with a strong, relatable protagonist and a story that keeps you hooked from start to finish. The author's ability to blend scientific concepts with human emotion makes this book a standout in its genre.
The book presents a captivating blend of science fiction and time travel, offering a new vision of humanity's struggle for survival in the midst of an environmental catastrophe. The narrative introduces Sara Gathers, a determined researcher who finds herself plunged into a world of chaos and uncertainty as Earth faces imminent destruction. The text's premise of an unexpected core overturn that causes magnetic shifts and paranormal time portals makes the story imaginative and intriguing, and sets the stage for an exciting adventure. Sara's journey through time, landing decades in the past, adds layers of complexity to the plot as she faces the challenges of altering the course of history to save humanity. One of the things I enjoyed most about the story is the development of Sara's character. Her resilience, resourcefulness, and unwavering determination to make a difference despite overwhelming odds make her a compelling protagonist. The exploration of her relationships, especially with people who have yet to meet her in her timeline, adds depth and emotional resonance to the narrative. The pacing of the plot is dynamic, keeping readers engaged as Sara navigates through various obstacles and dilemmas. The concept of using connections and relationships to enact change underscores the importance of human connection and solidarity in the face of adversity. The premise and character development are standout features of the story, laying a strong foundation. Expanding on the mechanics of the time portals and the consequences of altering the past would further enrich the narrative, adding layers of complexity that could make the story even more compelling. Overall, Western Lights is a compelling hard sci-fi adventure that combines thought-provoking themes with exhilarating action.
Western Lights, by C.P. Schaefer, is a thrilling journey through a near-future world grappling with sudden and violent environmental upheavals. The story kicks off with Ethan Sites, a young NOAA scientist, witnessing bizarre and deadly changes in the Northern Lights. These disturbances set off a chain reaction of events, including strange magnetic anomalies and catastrophic flash fires in Alaska. As Ethan and his team scramble to understand the phenomena, their efforts intersect with various global forces, from government agencies to local Alaskans, all trying to survive and decode the terrifying environmental shifts.
Schaefer’s writing is vivid and fast-paced, pulling you into the chaotic world he envisions with little room to catch your breath. I found his descriptions of the Alaskan tundra particularly immersive. The author’s impressive skill in blending technical details with a compelling narrative makes complex scientific concepts accessible without slowing down the action.
The core idea of a shifting magnetic pole causing such dramatic effects is intriguing and terrifying. Schaefer successfully taps into current concerns about climate change and amplifies them into a plausible and gripping disaster scenario. I appreciated how the novel doesn’t just focus on the spectacle of the environmental catastrophe but also delves into the human responses to it. Characters like Ethan, struggling to make sense of the science, and Sara, a whale rescuer who’s thrown into the chaos, add depth and a personal touch to the narrative. One of my favorite parts is when Ethan and Sara debate the causes and implications of the phenomena while trying to save stranded whales. This scene exemplifies how Schaefer weaves scientific discourse into the plot naturally.
Western Lights is a must-read for fans of eco-thrillers and science fiction. Schaefer combines scientific intrigue with heart-pounding action, making it an engaging and thought-provoking read. The book’s exploration of humanity’s fragility in the face of nature’s unpredictability will resonate with anyone interested in climate change or disaster stories. While I feel the breakneck pace might overwhelm some, it’s perfect for readers who enjoy being thrown into the deep end from page one.
Western Lights by C.P. Schaefer is a thought-provoking sci-fi novel set in a near-future world on the brink of irreversible climate disasters. The story follows biologist Sara Gathers, pilot Mason, and NOAA associate Ethan as they investigate alarming polar anomalies. Their journey takes an unexpected turn when they are transported back in time, where they realize that the key to preventing future climate crises lies in altering past events.
One aspect of Schaefer's writing that I particularly enjoyed is how he makes complex scientific concepts accessible without oversimplifying them. The discussions around methane emissions and pole reversals are well-explained, allowing readers to grasp the gravity of the environmental threats without feeling overwhelmed. The use of various graphs and subheadings at the beginning of each chapter is helpful, though the consistency of these subheadings could be improved for better flow.
The character development is another strong point. Sara, Mason, and Ethan are well-rounded characters, each with distinct voices and perspectives that add depth to the narrative. The multiple points of view keep the story engaging as we see the unfolding events through different lenses. Some parts of the plot feel a bit convenient, and there are moments where the prose tends to repetitively state certain facts, which could have been streamlined for a more polished read. The narrative maintains a good pace, and the stakes are high enough to keep readers invested in the outcome. The time travel element is handled intriguingly, adding a layer of complexity to the plot without detracting from the main environmental theme.
Western Lights is a compelling read for sci-fi enthusiasts and those passionate about environmental issues. Schaefer successfully combines scientific intrigue with an engaging storyline, making it a book that not only entertains but also prompts reflection on real-world environmental challenges. I recommend this novel to readers who enjoy a blend of science fiction and environmental advocacy, as well as those who appreciate a well-crafted time travel narrative.
Western Lights by C.P. Schaefer is a thrilling, topical science fiction that deals with climate change and the very real possibility of a climate catastrophe in the future. In Schaefer’s hard sci-fi novel, inexplicable Super Auroras emerge as a result of a switch in the earth’s core, which causes chaos with the earth’s magnetic fields. Strange paranormal phenomena start occurring and scientist and researcher Sarah Gathers finds herself slipping into one of these mysterious Auroras. As a result, she time travels, finding herself in the same place, but at a much earlier time point. She realizes that she might be able to save humanity from impending doom, but with no-one around that she knows or who believes her, how will she, alone, be able to change the course of history? Schaefer’s choice of topic is captivating, especially given the looming threat of climate catastrophe we face today. This novel taps into our current anxieties about climate change, making it timely and thought-provoking. As a fan of post-apocalyptic fiction that explores extreme versions of current societal issues, it is nice to find a sci-fi that focuses on climate rather than artificial intelligence. The author's straightforward writing style makes the plot easy to follow and keeps the story moving at a brisk pace. Though the novel doesn’t delve deeply into character development or intricate world-building, it excels in delivering plenty of drama and action, making it a thrilling read for hard sci-fi fans. The novel prioritizes Sarah Gather's gripping journey back to the past and her mission to save the planet, which drives the plot forward. While I would have enjoyed more exploration of the envisioned future, the focus on Sarah's compelling quest keeps the story engaging and dynamic. All in all, I think this book is a good choice for readers who like their science fiction novels to be fast-moving page-turners rather than thought-provoking explorations of possible future societal structures and problems.
Western Lights by C.P. Schaefer is a fast-paced, riveting story that evolves around mysterious chaotic events leading to an interesting world of dangerous but exciting possibilities. Within a short time frame, the military, government, and research teams investigate the unexplained phenomena, only to discover much more than they expected. When Sara Gathers, a brilliant biologist, becomes lost in the strange phenomena with several others, they must find their way, saving their world and themselves from a scary, uncertain present and future.
I really enjoyed the book and how quickly the story developed. There are many key players and various perspectives on the occurrences as they unfold to reveal greater opportunities and scary implications all at once. While some readers may find the pace of the story challenging, it’s infused with so many plot twists and unexpected developments, which kept me intrigued.
The straightforward narration and attention to important details created a vivid visual in my mind. The story flowed in such a colorful, thrilling way throughout. There’s a humanization of the characters while focusing on their expertise and natural strengths, abilities to focus on their plight while taking the reader along for the ride. It’s a unique science fiction/time travel tale that will keep you turning one page after another, until the book is done.
Western Lights by C.P. Schaefer is an intriguing read that can easily be finished over a weekend! It’s the ideal book for anyone who’s a fan of science fiction or new to the genre. It’s a fantastic book for anyone who enjoys a good adventure, and it’s ideal for all ages. I highly recommend the story and look forward to more work from the author!

I found her intelligence, independence, and resilience deeply compelling. Her struggle to navigate an unfamiliar timeline, relying solely on her wits, and her mission to avert Earth’s dire future, resonated with me. Despite her strength, her moments of vulnerability and loneliness added layers to her personality, making her journey even more engaging. The world-building in Western Lights is outstanding. The story feels deeply real and mirrors our own world’s struggles. The novel’s relevance is undeniable, especially in the context of our ongoing climate crisis. It serves as a potent call to action, urging us to wake up and address these critical issues.
I was thoroughly impressed with this book. Set in a world teetering on the brink due to climate upheavals and the eerie emergence of strange auroras, it delves into fires erupting in multiple areas and magnetic fields that disrupt animal behaviors. Following the investigations of Sara, Ethan, and Mason, readers are taken on a captivating journey as they become entangled in these phenomena, ultimately finding themselves displaced in time and grappling with their predicament. The story is highly engaging, effortlessly transporting readers to vivid new scenes. While the characters are solid and develop rapidly, I felt they could benefit from a bit more background to make them even more compelling. This additional depth would enhance understanding of their motivations and origins. Despite this, the intricate details of the setting contribute to a fascinating plot. A standout aspect is the strong female lead. It's refreshing to see a sci-fi narrative centered around a woman, and it's inspiring to think of how this could encourage young girls to dream of becoming researchers. Though it might sound extreme, the themes of global warming in the book could very well reflect future challenges, time travel aside. Schaefer’s skill in crafting an imaginative and immersive tale shines through on every page. A wonderful read!

Western Lights is a fascinating take on the possible effects of climate change in the near future. The book is particularly relevant following the rare sightings of the Nothern Lights around the world this year. It is a real eye-opener to the damage we continue to inflict on our planet and how little we truly understand about the environment. C.P. Schaefer writes with a comfortable tone and pace. He has an exquisite way with words; from the breathtaking auroras to a glass of bourbon on the rocks, he pours beauty into every description. The book also explores some of the technical aspects of the magnetic poles, but these are well explained with the use of diagrams and maps. The characters in Western Lights are realistic and likeable. In particular, Mason's character is a calming presence throughout the book. The relationship between him and Sara blossoms naturally through time and feels unforced. As well as the relationships between the main characters, the story is an important reflection of humanity as a whole. It accentuates our greed and regret, but also our comradeship when disaster strikes. Western Lights is an outstanding piece of literature. It’s the kind of book that fully immerses the reader, making them wish it would never end.

Schaefer’s portrayal of environmental degradation and its societal impacts is both chilling and thought-provoking, influencing every aspect of Sara's mission and keeping me on edge throughout the plot. The mystery of the lights that trigger Sara’s time travel sets the story in motion and maintains a suspenseful, engaging pace. What stands out in Western Lights is not just its thrilling science fiction elements but also its powerful message about the current environmental crisis. Schaefer challenges readers to reflect on their role in the fight against climate change, making the book's conclusion both satisfying and profoundly thought-provoking. Western Lights is a remarkable addition to the science fiction genre, blending a compelling storyline with richly developed characters and a crucial environmental message. It’s a must-read for anyone interested in thought-provoking science fiction with real-world relevance.
I could not put this book down. It was fast paced and a very enjoyable story. The book opens with 2 men flying through the tundra up in northern Alaska/Canada. They witness some Super auroras, the likes of which no one has ever seen before. The Super auroras interact with the ground causing fires to erupt and burn in vast areas of the tundra. A little later in the book Sara, Ethan, and Mason are investigating in southern Alaska when a Super aurora erupts very close where they witness a radio tower that existed sometime in the past flash in and out of existence and then before them a pack of wooly mammoths appear out of nowhere. Yes, extinct wooly mammoths. When Sara wakes up in a different time, she is determined to change the past to make a better future. This book is a must read. All ages will enjoy this fast paced, exhilarating story through time and space. Thank you to #BookSirens and author #C P Schaefer for letting me read this amazing book!
I found this book to be deeply compelling. Climate change is a frequently discussed topic, but Western Lights brings fresh insight by combining fiction with well-researched scientific details. The author effectively explains Earth's fragile balance and the alarming environmental changes we’re witnessing today. This context made the narrative feel both relevant and urgent, reinforcing my belief that we are ignoring critical warning signs, such as increasingly severe hurricanes, floods, and record-breaking temperatures. The story captivates from the first page, maintaining a relentless pace that kept me engaged throughout. The concept of time travel, while fantastical, is used here for a noble purpose—saving the world. The author's vivid descriptions of the past bring ancient times to life, highlighting the stark contrasts in society’s technological advancements and moral values.
This book is a must-read for those seeking an engaging and thought-provoking story.
We are introduced to: an Alaskan drifter with determination and independence; a cetacean specialist environmental protection agent with powerful connections and a pilot working for the protection agency in remote Alaska. These are the core characters we follow through some dramatic and intriguing events in Alaska, the Pacific Ocean and California. There are different sections which gradually reveal the danger and significance of the North Pole shifting and creating the book's title.
Time travel is also involved and we hear how these core characters fare in their past more than fifty years from their present. Several backstories of other significant people are revealed, but I felt some were a bit too convenient and the anachronisms of their time travel were not addressed, which is why it is not the full five stars. Gripping, involving and interesting read.

Super Auroras are affecting the earth's core, causing the magnetic field to flip and making animals that use magnetism for navigation confused, leading to widespread chaos. Sent to check these auroras out, Sara and two others are trapped in the phenomenon and are lost from their time. Can they do anything about what will happen? What are they willing to do or lose to accomplish their agenda?
What an awesome story. Kept me clued to the pages from the beginning wondering what was going to happen next. The descriptions were so well done that it was easy to visualize. I kept thinking that this would make a great movie.
Action-packed, twisty page-turner with touches of romance and loads of science fiction. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
C.P. Schaefer has delivered a standout sci-fi epic with Western Lights. The premise is fascinating using a planetary 'core flip' and magnetic shifts to create paranormal time portals is a refreshingly original take on time travel.
What truly makes this story shine, however, is Sara Gathers. Watching a brilliant researcher navigate the 1970s while carrying the weight of the future on her shoulders is incredibly compelling. Schaefer balances the technical details of climate upheaval and solar flares with a touching, high-stakes mission to reconnect with someone she loves before it's too late. It’s intelligent, fast-paced, and ultimately a story about the power of human connection. Fans of Interstellar or The Martian who want a touch of the paranormal will devour this.
This is a work of science fiction that blew my mind! I was hooked from the turn of the first page. From the first moment, this book captured my attention and left me completely absorbed. The narrative of how Sara wakes up in a familiar but radically different world kept me on the edge of my seat. Author Schaefer achieves complete immersion through detailed descriptions of settings and characters. Each page is infused with visual details that allow you to clearly imagine each scene. Sara, is easy to connect with because of her determination and intelligence. The fusion of science fiction, suspense, and drama blends seamlessly, resulting in a captivating story for enthusiasts of this genre.
I found this book intriguing; it had a unique outlook on the climate without making it so "today" and boring. The characters are well defined, and I love how they connect into the day-to-day life of the elite. I will not go into the main storyline as sci-fi readers will want to read this book. Most of you will find yourself wanting to be on this excursion. Why did I give a 3 star if everything is so great?? The length of this book is over 600 pages and as a reader there were times it was easy to skip over fluff that could have been eliminated and still made a good read. More is not always better.
Ecologically Relevent, believable time-travel, great characterization and crisp writing!
C.P. Schaefer know not only how to conceive a great story, but how to dramatically write it! “Western Lights” is a totally enjoyable and meaningful read! It’s future cast and backward voyaged time-travel narrative also carries a dire ecological warning -that the slow, trodding way we’re currently dealing with climate change and ecological crises will bring us to a reckoning sooner than we know. The characters that Schaefer writes about are exciting and the trials they overcome spur us on to want to be the best versions of ourselves! A great read which I highly recommend!
